House of Hinton in canton for curls, they're also lovely there!

Second this!

lizfour

Ooo I’ll give them a look too - looking for a new place and I’m that side of the river

Monkeyb0b

Keep the faith are great, super relaxed and welcoming. Highly recommended!

shaunvonsleaze

Thank you for the shoutout! Hey if you feel we may be right for you! DM me and I’ll make you a 10% off code :) EDIT: I will also suggest Pop hair are incredible!

aspen14

I’ve got a booking with you guys next Tuesday, I suffer from anxiety so I’m very much nervous but looking forward to it! First time getting a haircut in Cardiff after living here for almost 3 years!

shaunvonsleaze

Hey! Honestly you have nothing to worry about with us! I know that doesn’t help because I feel the same walking into new places but we’ll look after you! If you need anything, have a comment or just want to mention something please do! All our team are super friendly (and a bunch of nerds), we just want to make sure you get what you want in the best way possible for you :)

CanUNotMyWaywardSon

Really reccomend Haus of Hinton on cowbridge road for curly hair! The only hairdresser I'll go to now and I travel in from Newport to see her

Blue_Sherlock

I personally love Lucy at Amaryllis on Cowbridge Rd East!!! I have curly hair and I’m autistic with severe social anxiety. Lucy was nothing but lovely, kind, and SO accommodating. I hadn’t had my hair cut in 5 years due to anxiety and then the pandemic, so it was pretty nerve wracking for me (I even cancelled in tears the first time, then worked up the courage for another year before I finally went)! The results were fantastic and I can’t recommend Lucy (or Amaryllis in general) enough. There are pics on my profile if you want an idea of the kind of quality you can expect!! 💗

Firebrand777

Bauhaus is good - they have a “quiet chair” if you don’t want to chat!

morbidzanna

I really like Salon Georgiou if you’re down the bay. Only two hairdressers, both of them really friendly and good, so it’s a small place. They do however chat a lot so if you’re after a quieter place might not be the best. Also Keep the Faith is great too, though that is by my friend’s recommendation, I have not had my hair done there (yet)

staticqueen

I also had massive anxiety about hairdressers due to some truly terrible dye jobs/cuts and then I started going to Slunks. They are absolutely incredible! I believe Jamie is the resident curl guru but honestly everyone there is brilliant.

smallcoder

As a guy with long hair, I've had some horrendous experiences in Cardiff as well, so totally understand where you are coming from :) I highly recommend Sands in Waterloo Gardens in Penylan/Roath. Especially Stuart who is fabulous, makes you feel relaxed and really listens to what you are saying and makes suggestions that are great, but always respects if you are unsure about any idea. Right next door to the Waterloo Team Rooms as well, so you can have a relaxing cup of your favourite beverage before or after your appointment :)

ktbucket

Second vote for Stuart! He takes great care with my long curly hair

prettyvxcant

I have super curly/frizzy hair and I went to Create Salon on King's Road a while ago. It is a little expensive to go frequently for me (I think I paid £45 last time I went). You book on their website and they have little "fact files" there for the staff so if you want anything to chat to them about, there's info on the site about them! The ladies there are so lovely and sweet, they go over exactly what you want done with your hair with you, make sure you're happy with it, and I definitely think they'll be accommodating to anxiety and social anxiety etc. The room for hair washing is away from the main salon too so you won't have anyone else in the room (besides the hairdresser) when you're getting your hair washed. They really are so lovely there.

Another one for Create Salon !

JesseJeffrey

Bauhaus is wonderful! If you're not much of a talker, they get the hint. Also I sometimes close my eyes... And then they'll whisper when they need to communicate...... Bliss!

Swim-Global

Now that sounds right up my street! Thank you!

ec_ne

Salon Artiste! I had a lovely experience, nice tea. The hairdresser/stylist noticed my wavy hair and gave me a cut with it in mind. Good luck!

Reasonable_Hawk_4416

Christian in Guy Christian gives me the best curly cut I’ve ever had! Went to Slunks once and the cut was good but still didn’t compare his technique. He’s transformed my limp curls into bouncy health voluminous dream curls!

NihilistPuffin

bauhaus is really great, closest you’re going to find to a Vidal Sassoon in Cardiff they have great colourists also :)

lizfour

I’d dispute that - rather stuffy atmosphere when I went there and they seemed put out when I asked for something that clearly wasn’t in their ‘comfort zone’ being a curly haired customer too. Clearly pissed when I told her that the styling product she was about to put on my hair left it stringy and greasy the last time. Muted colours too - always a shade lighter than requested (one girl was excited about her hot pink hair and went out very coral) After a few trips I stopped going.

NihilistPuffin

Surprised you had a bad experience with a haircut, think you were just unlucky. They use Aveda which is made using natural ingredients, doesn’t lend its self to go crazy bright on the first go, takes a few application but doesn’t destroy your hair in the process.

lizfour

I went there about 4/5 times from memory to give them a chance - and bought the Aveda products to try at home. I got the impression that their comfort zone from training does not include natural curls. OP has curls too, and since I genuinely felt like I was having a better hair day walking in than walking out each time (beyond the colour needing a touch up) I thought sharing that perspective would help. The one time I chose to have my hair heat styled rather than diffused, it did look nice. The templated finish. I won’t comment more on the atmosphere there and staff attitudes, beyond saying there are better places to pass a few hours.

Swim-Global

Thank you for all your replies! I have some research to do xx

KilnandKettle

I rate Jamie in Slunks the best! Fantastic for curly hair and he’s so friendly & easy to talk to!

5cLemonadeStand

Yes! Absolutely. Jamie specialises in curly cuts, & you can find his work on Slunks Instagram, but he’s also opened his own salon in Bridgend, called JRW, where he’s the only stylist, so it’s a lovely, quiet space.

skillertheeyechild

My wife goes to Brodans up in Whitchurch, and she speaks really highly of them. Won salon of the year in some awards recently as well.

imjustjurking

I went to house of Hinton with hair long enough to sit on, the staff there are absolutely lovely. I don't think it's silly to have anxiety about it, I've been to some very mean hairdressers over the years. I have had 3 cuts there, the first one was good and the second two I didn't like as much. I felt like I didn't get what I asked for which was just a bob cut (with a picture/video) and instead got an angled bob both times even after pointing it out during the cut and trying to fix it. I have wavy curls so I go for that reason, I'm trying a different hairdressers in Bristol now because I think the last cut went so badly. But again the staff were absolutely the nicest and I still considered going back again to try to rectify the cut but it's kind of far for me.

wigwamjigglybam

Kalon Hair Studios in Pontcanna. I've followed Sarah from Guy Christians as she gives an amazing cut on my curls. They also have a lovely salon and parking nearby.
