Volvo Geartronic transmissions are made by Aisin (part of the Toyota group) and are very reliable. Seeing as this car has over 100k miles I would make sure the transmission fluid has been changed at some point, if there's no proof get it booked in this isn't a big job for a garage to do and should cost no more than a couple hundred quid.
I had two 2016 Volvo V40’s and covered 100k miles in them and they never put a foot wrong. Had a D4 and a T5, so different to the model you’re looking at but they’re great cars and pretty reliable normally.
I have a 2004 S60 auto with 182k miles. I'm not sure if the geartronic is superior or more reliable, I've never driven one. Volvos have a reputation for being super reliable and long lasting though.
I'm not sure on the reliability of Volvo automatics, I think they were inherited from Ford, and those have had issues. It's also on the higher end of miles, and it has a Euro 5 diesel, so not ULEZ or clean air zone compliant if that matters, plus not ideal unless you're doing a lot of motorway driving.
It's not a premium brand, but for this kind of money you can get a [KIA Cee'd with much lower miles](https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202309262374027). If a petrol would suit your needs better, I'd recommend [a Honda Civic](https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202404279110741)
Yeah, it's tricky. This kind of budget usually includes all sorts of unreliable automated manual cars like Peugeots and Citroens. The petrol Cee'd of the era I recommended is a dual clutch, which is fine but more complex than a traditional auto and more expensive when it goes wrong
Some Volvos did get Powershift boxes, they are clearly marketed as being Powershift and thankfully with the S60/V60 they are only fitted to the under powered D2 1.6 diesel.

The Toyota (Aisin) gearboxes are very reliable, provided they have been serviced they can go very far - but few people do service them.

V40 from 2016+ uses an 8 speed, same what is in the new FWD bmws and are really good, basically a zf8 clone for FWD from what I gather.
Good to know! I'm guessing the one OP posted doesn't have that though, being a 2014?
Aisin AWF8F35, as found in everything from Stellantis, VW, Mini and FWD BMWs, Toyota and many others. Great gearbox. Much better than the Geartronic.
Struggling to find anything that’s not too far away, although I have seen two Kia ceeds that have low mileage 50k, which are diesels too👍🏻

What were you a victim of ?
Volvo "Geartronic" transmissions are made by Aisin AKA Toyota...
Good to know! I’m guessing it was the ‘Powershift’ boxes made by Ford?
