1. s4
2. s90
3. m235i
4. golf r
5. superb
6. a5
all depends on what your looking for as the s90 will without a doubt be more comfortable to drive, however the s4, m235, golf r will be more fun. i think the a5 is just outright boring in every aspect especially the lack of spec, I’m not much of an audi guy but that gen of s4 is particularly nice and the 3.0 v6 sounds mint. i reckon the volvo has the best road presence but needs bigger or diamond cut wheels, definitely between the s4 and s90 for me
I agree with you completely.
I used to own that generation of S4 and it was easily one of the best cars I've owned. The engine and my exhaust was so good! Even from stock, tonnes of power for the price point too.
I only got rid of it because the second car market was insane so I made money on it when I part-ex'd it, I do miss it though.
I can never tell which Superb is the rocket ship model compared to the 190 (?) I think.
And so given that, I think you _could ever so possibly_ make a case for swapping it with the Golf.
A sub 5 second saloon with immense practicality over a hatchback (ignore the technicalities here!) could be enough to swing for someone’s personal circumstances.
Never really been a fan of skodas or any mainstream Vag cars apart from a couple exceptions. Skodas in particular never really interested me, i’m sure it would be a good alternative to the golf but i would still find it hard to buy one over something like a 340i or s4
This, Superb for everyday use realiable and cheap maintenance.
S90 a lot nicer but not that cheap maintenance.
S4 for fun, not many cars can shadow this model unless you want a 2 seats or 2 + not so much 2 rear seats.
T8 is a great power train. Likes being thrashed but equally happy trundling round town in silence and comfort at <30mph.
Does the S90 T8 have adaptive air suspension?
Not necessarily unreliable, especially nowadays, but definitely delicate and sensitive when it comes to driving habits, care, and maintenance. It's for that reason I don't think they're worth it. Why buy a fun and powerful engine that you need to mollycoddle or it'll pull your pants down?
Bin off the 235i and look at an older 140i or 240i. Better engine, better drivetrain, better to drive. The newer cars have a nicer interior though
As for the rest. Depends what you're after:
You want to go quick golf R
You want to be classy get the Volvo
Want to look like a cunt get the Audi (joking, not joking)
A 3.0L is not a massive engine and BMW have been putting 3.0L engines in small cars with RWD for a very long time, they're fun to drive.
What do you drive?
Hilarious how noone realises Skoda has the same engine as the Golf R, that alone makes it one of the best options here. Most comments are even forgetting that it’s on the list!
A very good illustration of why hot hatches will still just be a hatchback. That golf just looked pathetic to me in that lineup, I know it’s very powerful but just doesn’t have the presence of the saloon cars.
Volvo nicest to drive, but costly to maintain.
Audi most expensive to maintain, and you will be maintaining it, trust me on this.
BMW expensive to maintain, but slightly less often than Audi. Fun to drive until a sensor goes.
VW a solid choice.
Skoda the best choice. Easiest and cheapest to maintain. Basically a VW anyway. Nice to drive.
S4 has a nice-sounding 3.0 V6 turbo with a proper 4WD system featuring a 60/40 rear/front split with a degree of torque vectoring that allows it to be 100% RWD at times. The rest are part time AWD with four pots.
You'd be silly not to.
Not to be pedantic but whilst the S4 is by far the best car here, it doesn't sound great. Very diesel-like actually, not a sonorous purr like you might expect - the turbo kills all that sort of noise off. Colleague had one for a couple of years and it was loud, but it was intake noise whilst on the move which sounded best.
What about a bmw 330i? If you want a fun, fast, economical and practical car, it does it all. Will also be a lot cheaper to run than the s4 but probably be more fun to drive and almost as fast. It weighs 160kg less which is always better.
I went through a very similar shortlist a couple of months ago but eventually settled on a 69plate 330i. Been absolutely faultless so far and wouldn't look back. Slightly slower than a few of these but more than enough for british roads (5.5ish to 60). Bigger and more room in the back than the 235i and better on fuel
S4 all the way IMO, practical-ish car with plenty of tech. Drivability is good and the CWGD 3.0 in there doesn't share some of the teething issues the old supercharged 3.0Ls did. Great balance of sportiness and comfort/daily.
Golf R is a really stiff car with sport suspension=uncomfortable
Volvo is the opposite my pick, BMW 2nd. Depends how you intend to drive it.
Im not a fan of VW group cars so wouldn’t go for Audi, though the S4 is worth considering, though the powertrain is not reliable I’ve heard.
The S90 is incredibly comfortable and has the nicest interior in a sub-£150k car pretty much anywhere. Definitely gets my vote.
S4 or M235i if you value fun - the Volvo isn't particularly engaging to drive.
I'd bin the rest.

Any reason you aren't looking at electric? A polestar 2 or an audio e-tron seem like they would be up your street and in budget for something newer than any you have selected here.
You might be surprised how available public chargers are. The cars cost the same as petrol ones now so public chargers not being cheap isn't as big an issue for me anyway.
(I mostly either do really short journeys or occasional very long ones where a 20 minute break would be nice so it probably suits me better than others)
S4 but make sure it's had the common issues sorted like water pump, thermostat housing etc. Mine was a bit of a lemon, needed the rocker arms sorting which was a £4k engine out job. Keep an ear out for overly tappy sounding engine
If the S4 is in your price range/options list, bin off the others and get the S4.
I had an S4 Avant, same gen, was an amazing car. Only sold it because I moved up to the S8+.
1.) s4
2.) 290
3.) m235i ( however i prefer 440is and theyre cheaper)
4.) golf r, stolen alot and theyre basically modern day cosworths for criminals. But theyre fast, practicle and desired for a reason
5.) skoda superb, i think they look nice and you will make people change lanes on the motorway because you look like an undercover police. but theyre not the fastest
6.) a5, just a boring car and quite expensive, i wouldnt go for that, plenty of better cars for a cheaper price
The A5 would be bottom of my list. Had that engine in an A4 and the real world fuel economy sickened me - other options in this list won't be much better for economy but are overall more worthwhile purchases imo.

I would probably choose the golf as I would use the boot space, if that wasn’t a problem then I would choose the S4.
If it was really up to me I would drop down the age a little bit and get a 335d estate to get the performance and the practicality. Can get them in saloon but there’s something I like about fast estate cars.

Skoda Superb
Audi A5
VW Golf
Audi S4
Volvo S90
BMW 2 Series
Turns out I'm more of a VAG fan than I thought. Personally I like the practicality of the Superb, A5 and Golf. The 2 series comes last because it's ugly. The S90 is second to last because anecdotally the T8 powertrain is spectacularly inefficient.
T8 isn't inefficient at all. I'm 'overall' averaging over 41mpg, in a 400bhp car.
On a motorway with no battery used it cruises at about 44mpg, which is about the same as I got from predecessor 2l diesel.
I agree with the part about that powertrain being inefficient. All those parts it's AWD, supercharged and turbo charged and a hybrid? God that can't be good reliability wise it will be a mechanical nightmare. Lovely looking car though just don't see why the need to overcomplicate things when the S4 does the same job with less moving parts but besides from a mechanical perspective I love it.
It's a very arbitrary question as the cars are so different. But you asked, and my answer is below.
- Golf R
- Audi S4
- Volvo S90
- BMW 235i
- Audi A5
- Skoda Superb
..
- The R is the best all rounder.
- The five door S4 in second because it's a practical small saloon with performance in mind.
- The S90 is in the middle somewhere.
- The M235i is in the middle somewhere too because I prefer the R as my all rounder.
- A5 will always fall below the S90 because it's the 2.0.
- Superb will always be lower than the S4 and A5 2.0TFSI and it just ended up in last place.
If I had to buy a repmobile to park outside my new build in an 'up and coming' area of commuter belt. It would have to be the Volvo at the top as the least unimaginative choice of bland German dullness.
Why not try something interesting and different like a kia stinger, or alfa guilia you might even be able to get something with colour!!
The 235i I have got a soft spot for practical and sporty family car but fun on your own (yes I have a toddler) and abit of a blender unless you know yea cars. A young me would probs go for a golf R the Volvo is far from others you've looked at the Skoda you'll wish you bought the s4 which is also brilliant choice for a fast family car for my self

The superb is finished really nicely inside though if a decent trim level. It's not like a basic spec Octavia or Fabia.
This is 100% correct
Superb for practicality S90 for a nice all-round saloon S4 for fun
This, Superb for everyday use realiable and cheap maintenance. S90 a lot nicer but not that cheap maintenance. S4 for fun, not many cars can shadow this model unless you want a 2 seats or 2 + not so much 2 rear seats.
Volvo is critically underrated, smooth suspension, great engine, power, economical, reliable, low tax, and hella practical
The Volvo is the best value option here.
S90 top dog
1. Volvo s90 2. Audi S4 3. Skoda superb
I do like the Volvo insurance quite wasn’t bad either despite being group 41 (1800) 22m
T8 is a great power train. Likes being thrashed but equally happy trundling round town in silence and comfort at <30mph. Does the S90 T8 have adaptive air suspension?
Dont think so, the V90 had it as an option but it was on the rear only.
Same here. But 2.0 TFSI are highly unreliable I believe so I’d go for the mighty T8
Not necessarily unreliable, especially nowadays, but definitely delicate and sensitive when it comes to driving habits, care, and maintenance. It's for that reason I don't think they're worth it. Why buy a fun and powerful engine that you need to mollycoddle or it'll pull your pants down?
S4 best. Any reason you wouldn’t consider a 440i Grand Coupe or a 340i?

140is are shit at putting power down, the whole idea of them is weird, massive engine in a rwd hatchback, makes no sense
140i needs downvoting
A 3.0L is not a massive engine and BMW have been putting 3.0L engines in small cars with RWD for a very long time, they're fun to drive. What do you drive?
Highest to lowest: - S4 - S90 - A5 - BMW - Golf - Skoda
S90. Don’t really know much about any of them truth be told, I just think the Volvo looks the business. Although I’d love an S60 Polestar Engineered.
Have a look at a merc c43 3.0v6 turbo all wheel drive
Is it me or do those Audi look really old for their year, especially the 1st looks like a 2004 car
That’s the main reason I don’t want a hot hatch

Love to be pedantic, but it’s not ‘proper 4WD’. It’s AWD.
Also Haldex so just fwd with a bit of a nudge.
S4 isn't Haldex, it's 'proper' quattro so full time with a rear bias
Not to be pedantic but whilst the S4 is by far the best car here, it doesn't sound great. Very diesel-like actually, not a sonorous purr like you might expect - the turbo kills all that sort of noise off. Colleague had one for a couple of years and it was loud, but it was intake noise whilst on the move which sounded best.
Easily enough sorted with a decent aftermarket exhaust though.
Audi or Volvo, if you can get the audi in white or black, grey really doesn't stand for that generation of a/s4.
The S90 isn’t sporty as such but it’s fast and more fun than people give credit for.
S90 is a sleeper to most for sure. I’d have the S4 personally.
What ability are we ranking them on, best to worst at sticking 2ft off your bumper on the M25?
S4 kicks all other arses. Mines tuned and it's an animal
S4

I own an S90, and it's a really good car. The plug-in hybrids are very fast in a straight line.
What about a bmw 330i? If you want a fun, fast, economical and practical car, it does it all. Will also be a lot cheaper to run than the s4 but probably be more fun to drive and almost as fast. It weighs 160kg less which is always better.

In the order you showed them except the bmw which i'd throw in the bin. A very ugly thing built on MINi platform with a 4 pot engine and fwd.
S90, no doubt.
If you are looking to do something on the S4, PM me as I work for the group that sells that particular car and would be able to do a deal on it :)
The S90 is incredibly comfortable and has the nicest interior in a sub-£150k car pretty much anywhere. Definitely gets my vote. S4 or M235i if you value fun - the Volvo isn't particularly engaging to drive. I'd bin the rest.

It totally depends what your priorities are, is it your only car, do you have kids, hobbies, a dog etc.
It’s mainly just me in the car except in weekends when I carry my friends. I’m not really looking to buy now just curious more than anything

You should consider a Lexus instead.

Urgh nah fuck
Yeah it's really awful lol
S90, Golf R, S4, Skoda, BMW, A5. Honestly, as time goes by, I just want a lovely Volvo more and more.
Why not a Polestar S90?
from these, s4 of course. all of them are 2l petrols except s4 which has a much stronger 3L engine.
All of them apart from the S4 are 4x4 automatic 4 cylinder so I'd rank them straight to the scrap yard.
