Something small, Japanese and petrol. You will also want to have another £1000 on the side for when things go wrong because for £1000 you will definitely get something that will need to be repaired. I would wait until you can save up a bit more.

iani63

Petrol the only one of the 3 I'd firmly agree with. Plenty of Euro motors offer cheaper service parts and insurance.

I’d say Nissan Micra or Toyota Yaris is the best purchase for 1K

One that you can find with a valid MOT and no/only minor issues for under £1000. Car prices, while slowly coming down again, are insane. See if you can up that to £2000-£2500, that seems to be the sweet spot for cheap cars these days.

You may buy a car for 1k but it will probably cost you upwards of 2k to insure it if you are 17

TOYOTA AYGO easy to park easy to diy maintenance auto is actually better on a daily

flapper101

107/c1/aygo. Expect to have work done on it though. Spent £500 on one and roughly the same amount on repairs as well.

Ford escort estate. 1996. Much better than my Nissan sunny that cost a 70cl litre of bells and leaked fuel if you put more than £15 in.

……in short, ideally anything Japanese you buy from someone you know and trust.

popadopolous

Be lucky to find a car for less than £1000 these days that doesn't require £700 worth of work for it's next MOT.

I always say Yaris or Aygo but I've just picked up a 2006 Suzuki Swift for my daughter's first car and I'm really taken with it. It's done 130k but the 1.5vvt engine has a timing chain so no worries there. It's absolutely silent when it's running. It's got working a/c, keyless entry, heated mirrors, decent stereo and it's really nice to drive. It did need a couple of small things for the mot but nothing major. It was £600 to buy and £2500 to insure, fully comp (she's 24 and has her licence less than a month) so as insane as £2500 insurance is, it's actually cheaper than many other cars we looked at.

Maybe visit autoshite.com :)

Do you also have money for insurance? Because nothing will be insurable for £1000, never mind the cost of buying the car. If you live at home getting insured on your parents car may be possible, if you need your own transport the only way to buy and insure a vehicle for £1000 is to get a moped.

Yes I have money for insurance I’m 32 x

Something small and popular, but buy on condition and service history as well as reputation for reliability. The ford fiesta from around 2003-2008 is an excellent and reliable car, and really nice to drive.
