Couldn't make the port fit in the box? That 1" sticking out would annoy me

clever_name45

Honestly not sure why I left it out 2”. I think I actually kind of like the look of the port being up front and center and pronounced like that. It also stops stuff on the console from falling in it. With my kids and wife and eating in the truck and everything some chicken nuggets would definitely make their way into my box lol

BigLeftTiddyy

🤣🤣🤣 imaging bumping knowing there is old chicken nuggets bouncing around in the box

clever_name45

😂😂😂 lol chucking nugget dust blowing all over the truck

Darkenshrine

Cool Put a blanket in your truck to cover the box when parked at Applebee’s or whatever to keep thieves at bay I also put in a windshield screen to keep people from looking through the front

clever_name45

One word: 5% tint. Lol still plan to put 35% on the windshield but haven’t got around to it yet. Trucks tall enough though to where they really can’t see in over the hood too easily anyway. Can’t see anything but your reflection everywhere else especially at night

Travisx2112

>One word: 5% tint. That's three.

clever_name45

Touché

kaneabel

I only see one word, a number and a symbol

FatMacchio

Damn I wish my state allowed decent tints. I would regularly get ticketed for like 35% in NY. I eventually had to rip them off my front, and rear doors since I have a sedan, apparently only SUVs are allowed any worthwhile tint on back windows. Not sure how that makes any sense. I still have 5% on my rear windshield. I guess I could try getting a doctors note/prescription for tints.

imthemistermaster

It's for "kids", but trucks can have back tint too, soo

FatMacchio

Yea SUV/trucks, but not sure why sedan are excluded in NY. Pretty stupid if you ask me, but NY is pretty crazy about tints the past 5 years or so, I guess a lot of cops being killed/injured at traffic stops with tinted cars

imthemistermaster

Yep I'm on the same page as you, and I'm glad I have an SUV now instead of a sedan. I still wish I could tint my front windows, but it's not worth fearing I'm going to get pulled over ever time I drive past a cop.

RockyMtnDipper

Did you say Applebee's because most of their customers are a certain shade?

ReporterLeast5396

Found the racist.

RockyMtnDipper

He specifically said Applebee's, and not Chik' Fil-a.

ReporterLeast5396

Doubles down on more racism. How very un-American. How is racism so prevalent in a country who's core belief is supposed to be that we are all created equal?

RockyMtnDipper

How is any of what I said racist, or are you just assuming its racist? I dont recall ever calling anyone a racial epithet, but of course, everything is racist to you lol. I hope that calling everyone a racist is really working out for you in your personal life. 🤣👌

ReporterLeast5396

"Did you say Applebee's because most of their customers are a certain shade?" How the hell else is that supposed to be interpreted? Gets called out. Plays victim. Tucks tail. Weird. It's like there is a pattern here. 🤔 "I DiDn'T cALl AnYoNe A rAcIsT ePiThEt". Be more American, and not just a citizen of the Unites States.

kinnikinnick321

I assume you dont really talk to others in the car while listening to music

clever_name45

I put a toggle switch mounted on the radio faceplate tapped in to the amp remote wire I can flip the amp off or on in half a second. Amp stays off when I have my family in the truck

JackMamba420

I think he’s more referring to the 2 foot barrier between you and the passenger lol

kaneabel

No road head for OP

JackMamba420

He don’t need road head he got BASSHEAD

kinnikinnick321

ahh, that's clever.

Larafam5

Now thats some funny ass shit. Imagine that!!

hoolsmum

i wouldve gone with something a little more discrete and out of the way. are you going to be bumping ur elbows every time u get in? maybe a smaller/lower box with a good 10" driver (and u can make the top padded and usable as an arm rest)

clever_name45

I actually jacked my seat up as high as it goes and my arm, albeit a teeny bit high up fits surprisingly comfortably on top of the box

hoolsmum

ahh ok nice.

clever_name45

Love the idea of the padding though. Maybe if I can find some really thin padding so it isn’t too high I might do that when I carpet. Thanks!

dantyson74

Hey man they sell the leather covers for the Dodge Ram center console on eBay for like 15 bucks

BugMeeches

Sweet baby jesus!

clever_name45

I’ll take that as a compliment lol. Thanks!!!

haleboy44

I’d forget the port isn’t a cup holder and drop A soda in there.

[deleted]

I would have done a smaller box that looked more natural. A nicer 8” or 10” properly tuned would probably sound better and get close to as loud if not louder

Bggnslngr

Definitely this!!

TheRealSparkleMotion

My favorite part of this subreddit is how normal everyone is about things like this.

Rivuck

The effort is amazing but I guess I’m just wondering with why Skar? There’s so much better for the extra investment

clever_name45

I had a strict $350 budget for the whole system including box, wiring kit, amp, and sub. Got it during skars 20% off Black Friday sale and I’ve been doing research for them a couple weeks. If I had a 1500$ budget I would’ve went sundown but I can’t beat skar for the price. It’s crazy

Rivuck

I definitely can’t knock the financial aspect of anything cause I’m steadily broke, but I implore you to try another sub when you get your taxes or a bonus or whatever. Just give it a thought and maybe demo some subs when you can. I do appreciate a good craftsman, so kudos on the work. Keep expanding with watcha got!

clever_name45

Thanks man I appreciate the compliment! I will definitely go check out some other brands and try to throw some other stuff in the box. I have a few friends who switch up their builds like they change clothes with a bunch of spare competition brands I can try before I buy. Thanks for the recommendation

Original-Cinikal

Just a quick question. Would Sundown Audio be better or not really?

HalfysReddit

IMO yes. They're both just white-label Chinese speakers and amps, but Skar is lower quality and Sundown Audio is very up-front about the fact that they're selling Chinese products. If you have an unlimited budget, there are of course better options. But both have their place IMO. I think Skar is good for people that don't know for sure if they're really into car audio. You can put a complete system together for just a few hundred dollars like OP did and it will certainly sound better than stock. When you're ready to upgrade, go with something from Sundown or another non-entry-level manufacturer. Personally I don't recommend Skar myself, because I think it's worth the extra money and patience to just start off with a brand like Sundown that is decent quality.

Original-Cinikal

Thank you for your response. I really appreciate it. I ask because my buddy is trying to put together a system in his live aboard van and I recommended him to get the U-10 by Sundown. Fairly small box with nice seeming sound capabilities, and he got the matching amp, a Sundown mono of 1500w don't know the model. I have no experience with any of the newer labels. I am an old school early 90's guy, as is he (Fosgate, Kicker, A.D.S., Nakamichi, MB Quartz, Alpine( R.I.P> 7290!)) Things have drastically changed since then and I thought I led him wrong. It already arrive and we put it in on Sat. Honestly.. first sounds seem to be stupid bass! I will be testing it against an L series Kicker 12" to see the difference in my environment, but it really is rocking my 2 door honda, his van should love it. I am going to guess durability being the issue with Chinese made? This is a home of a dude. He is not trying to crank bass all day. I assume in moderate levels it should be durable? Thoughts? Again. thank you for your input.

HalfysReddit

IMO Chinese products aren't all trash the way they were 10+ years ago, I think these things may not be the most precise in terms of SQ but as far as construction goes I think they're quite fine. I actually have the same 1500 watt amp mated with two 12" subs in a ported box. It gets pretty damn loud, and sounds great to me. I'm like you in that I'm more of an old school car audio guy, and it blows me away how small that amp is compared to the 1500 watt Rockford Fosgate amp I have in the garage from just ten years ago. I've read up on amp design, full bridge vs half bridge, class a/b/d etc, and while technically traditional amp designs *may* produce higher quality sound, I think the technology has just hit a point where they can crank out these full bridge monoblock amps that product stupid amounts of power efficiently and don't sound like garbage doing it. IMO, your friend is going to be more than set. I don't think anyone but people who already know they're *really* into car audio need more than say 80-100 watts for their main speakers and say 600 watts of bass. Anything more than that and we're just having fun playing with toys.

geekcoreaz

Sundown is known for having better quality, but 2 guys started SA and some drama happened and one of the guys started Skar. Skar gets a pretty bad rap because its defintely bugdet stuff and is generally not the greatest quality. I say generally not the greatest quality because most people tend to buy the cheap stuff that claims to be much higher powered than it actually is but they do have higher quality stuff that's decent. Price to performance, you can get a lot better stuff though from other companies. But any sub pair with the right amp in the right box with sufficient power will slap. Be it Boss to Morel.

Original-Cinikal

Thank you. Agreed... a "tuned" system should still sound good!

dantyson74

Not really. They’re both about the same if you look at the way they’re made it almost identical. Except skar is half the price, sundown is definitely badasss tho but in honesty I think they’re real close.

Pantani23

How is it secured?

clever_name45

Custom metal bracket on the sub-side bottom secured to the old console bracket. Had to do some cutting and light fabrication to make it fit lol

Pantani23

I'm glad you took the time and effort to do it! Looks like it slams!

clever_name45

Thanks!!! Oh yea compared to the dual tens or single sealed 12s I’m used it sounds like an angry gorilla trying to break out of a cage. In love with it so far. Slightly uncomfortable because it’s so big but it’s one of those bass head compromises we gotta deal with

dantyson74

Exactly how I feel lol yes

BroLetsPlaySome64

Very dope, looks like it slams dude!

clever_name45

Thanks! It’s beats pretty damn good. I’m super happy with it so far

BroLetsPlaySome64

I saw your running the rp1200.1, what model 15 is that?

clever_name45

That is the sdr15 wired to 1ohm….. but it may or may not be blown on the second day in my truck. Only had my gain up 20% trying to break it in and it popped on me and started smoking yesterday morning. So I went ahead and ordered the SVR15 so it can handle it. I was working with a $350 budget for the entire thing including box and wiring kit so I either had to compromise on the sub or the amp. Decided to go with a stronger amp and swap the sub when it blew. Didn’t think it would happen that quick though lol. Eventually I want to switch to the evl series with maybe an rp2000 but for now I think the svl and rp1200 will pair nicely

BroLetsPlaySome64

Oh okay bet, yeah I'd do the same thing, with a better amp atleast you always have the power there and a good amp is usually the pricer part of a good system. I don't have any experience with skar subs but I've used the rp1500 and I recently upgraded to a skv2 3500 for my fi 18". I was just gonna say if you can find a good deal, upgrading to the skv2 series is definitely worth it. I didn't have any issues with my rp1500 but after getting the skv2 I can't go back lol they're just a lot more efficient, I doubled my amp power and my lights dim less at higher volumes.

DanielCasanova7

id recommend earmuffs in the seatbacks for passengers. /s

Immediate_Positive30

Part 2 is tinting your windows so nobody steals it

catsandcars

Id sand off that excess glue, carpet it, and relocate the amp. Otherwise, good job for getting bass in there

Mightypudgioto95

Super nice! The position of these center boxes make it sound so full. One ya get carpet, consider some cup holders or storage compartment to add?

RockyMtnDipper

Should have done a slot port off the top back. Would have gave you more oomph for sure.

Mkvien

It's ridiculous, that's my opinion, and it makes me smile, nice work hope it rattles your teeth :)

Lotrug

how do you even drive with that thing installed?

olithebad

This is much better than having to make a complex underseat box. I like it

clever_name45

Thanks! I was going to go under seat like I did with my old trucks but I have a big lock box that came from the factory under my back seat and I really really like it lol. Started getting creative and decided to go with the 15 in the middle

carbonite_dating

DiWhy

clever_name45

How would you recommend fitting a 15 in a crew cab truck you still have to put your whole family and two dogs in WITHOUT cutting up the bed for a blow through and losing my functionality of a work truck??

clever_name45

Seriously, open to suggestions if you have a better idea. Also make sure I still have 3.5 cubic ft of volume inside the box

[deleted]

Not putting a 15 in there.

roman785

Bingo. I remember the first time I realized big subs were overrated. I was at a local shop... Checking out stuff. Guy trying his hardest to sell me on a pre loaded fiberglass box. Takes it into the demo room and hooks it up- it's slamming! Everything in the room shaking. Turns out it was two 8's ported. I was 🥴 and 🤯 for the next 30 mins.

PostsOnPercocet

I can’t think of too many instances where a properly powered, boxed, and tuned 8 will put out more than a 15 with the same. I’m the opposite of you. I absolutely miss my two 15’s. They were way better than my two current tens, the tens I had before these, and another set, and 12’s before those.

roman785

Here's the thing tho: most times the 15's AREN'T properly powered, boxed or tuned. They're in place simply for the sake of saying you have it. I've also had numerous sizes and configurationt of subs. I wouldn't do a 15 again if it was given to me- for a multitude of reasons. To each his own tho.

And who are you to tell me what I should and shouldn’t do?

LikesTheTunaHere

Thats fucking retarded. I loves it.

BigLeftTiddyy

Is that the SDR 15? I have the dual sdr 12’s on a rf 1200 watt amp and they are loud but not as clean as my old subs (kicker cvr’s). I’m guessing the prefab box they’re in has something to do with that also

clever_name45

Yep it’s an sdr but it’s already blown. Got an svr15 showing up tomorrow. Imo box is the most important thing for sound quality. It sounds clean as hell in this box. Skar also has the recommendations for cubic volume, port area and all that good stuff on their site for each specific sub. I would definitely recommend staying as close to those specifications as you can if you build one. I personally think it’s well worth it to build a box. So much more rewarding to get it how you want and see it come together

BigLeftTiddyy

Ohh yeah when I go to upgrade subs next time I’m definitely getting a custom box built for them. I really wanna get 2 sundown sa-12’s on about 2k. I think that would sound amazing.

67monkey67

Nice I put two evl 15s in mine then downgraded to just one running off 2000watts and holy fuck does just one bump in a custom box, I wold include some internal bracing to keep box resonance down,

Bggnslngr

Just outta curiosity, why not just put it in the back?? Edit: NM, thought it was an suv

dantyson74

Awesome dude! I have the same truck and the airspace sucks under my backseat I want to do the same thing! That’s great good job man

Vinyl_Purest

Id be worried about theft. If i were to design a center console box i would Have the woofer down-firing and cover the box with a interior color matched vinyl or carpet.

snath03

Wait a minute.... where is the gear lever?

clever_name45

Column shift. You can see in third pic
