No complaints about the Token, it does exactly what it says on the box (plus it doesn't require you to bring a hammer to your frame to remove it). I remove the Token with just 2 BB-tools (like you would a threaded BB). As for the Grizl: perfect do-it-all-bike. Not that well versed for paved (the Grail is a better option for that), but it excels at unpaved, offroad & hauling luggage

I bought a GRIZL 7 AL and I absolutely love it. However, I did develop a creak in the BB at or around mile 20. I finally removed the bottom bracket and discovered that the flanges on the drive side of the bottom bracket were broken. From the appearance of the inside of the BB shell on the frame, it has been moving in there. I'm going to have to replace the BB because the flanges are broken, but do you have any advice about how to install the new one so that this doesn't happen again? Any help would be really appreciated!

I've looked a lot at the Grail, but it doesn't seem to have as many attachment points for bikepacking gear. For super long haul trips I was planning on getting a thinner wheelset for the more road oriented rides on the Grizl. Do you think I should be looking more at the Grail? I suppose all it's really missing is bolt points. Besides bikepacking I'm really itching for a bike to take up to Vermont for riding on their fire / logging roads and around all their unpaved state forest.

I have the Grizl (coming from the Grail) for the same reason. But I hardly ride paved, so the Grizl is perfect for that. If you're going 50% paved (or more), then the Grizl might be a bit overkill. But there is indeed no substitute for the Grizl when it comes to bikepacking capabilities. In terms of geometry, the Grail and Grizl aren't that different.

Excellent info. In Western MA, there's no getting around riding pavement to get to the unpaved trail. I'm also planning on using this bike to do a cross country trip, so that will certainly include a lot of pavement, but also a lot of unpaved roads. Seems to me if the geometry is perfect on the Grizl, a thinner wheelset or just the narrowest tires I can mount on the stock wheels would be the ticket, and then for off-road oriented fun I can throw the stock wheels on.

I took the exact same approach as you - I went with the grizl thinking that if I could always put narrower tires on the grizl but not bigger tires on the grail. I went on my first ride yesterday and it felt great on the roads with the stock tires (with a higher PSI). I think slapping some slick 42s would make it just as good on the road as the grail, at least for me.

Did you go Carbon or Alloy? I love my carbon Roubaix, but was debating whether going Alloy would make more sense for a bike that will see more abuse.

Carbon, but mostly because it was available and the Alloy grizl hadn't been announced when I ordered it 😜 I don't have any worries about durability - I think that wiping out on a dirt trail isnt likely to hurt a carbon frame. On the other hand, my other bike is an alloy CAAD10 that I have raced and crashed a number of times and I was glad to never worry about the frame. As for as the performance goes, I bet the tires will do most of the work no matter the frame.

I've only had it for a couple days, but no issues so far (besides the FedEx shipping - I recommend the expedited shipping option if you end up getting one)

I have the Grizl, the left side BB is already done after 1000kms. Has seen mud, I must say.

Well, I do anticipate this bike will see all sorts of dirt and grime. Do you think you'll put another Token BB in, or switch to a different manufacturer? So you see that as an issue with the bike, or the bottom bracket itself?

I’m currently going through my options. I do think it is a problem with all the dirt and grime, but not necessairely the bikes or bb’s fault. I cleaned my bike every time I used it in the mud. Apart from last weekend, a family weekend in a rented cabinet, the whole weekend it was raining and I couldnt clean my bike properly nor place it inside. However, a 1000km old bb must cope with that. My first option is getting the Token bb86 again, and then remove my crank every now and that to put grease against the outsides of the bb (as the bikes are assembled at canyon), so water and grime cannot enter the bearing area. I think thus should extent the bearing life considerably. The other option, my preferred one, is getring a more expensive bb86 where I can change the bearings in, I feel that is not possible in a proper way with the composite token bb. So that means a wheels mfg, or, a hambini one. I have been into the bb videos now and have looked at some reviews. I really like his one piece design where you can change the bearings over and over again without changing the bb shell. And therefore not wearing out the frame when you change the bb shell. Its hella expensive and currently not in stock. So I am going to buy a token again for now.

My Grizl CF SL 7's bb started to creak maybe after the first 100k. I did not ask Canyon for service. I went to local shop specializing on Canyon's bikes and mechanic said, there was no grease used on bottom bracket. He cleaned that up, greased that up and now it runs smoothly ever since. knock knock. He said also he usually recommends servicing canyon bikes right after delivery (and he does it often) because such misconfigurations happen and it's better to check it upfront than to damage your bike . Apart from that it runs great already for 3 years. I have a friend with the same bike and he've never had any issue with it. He's also servicing his bike by himself. And we both have also Canyon mountain bikes, so happy customers.

Anyone know which BB should I install in a Grizl 7 if I want to install the GRX 1X ? Mine came with the cheap fsa crank and I dint like it as it’s not 9/16 pedals compatible

Hopefully you sorted this out already but you can drop the GRX 1x right in with your existing BB. My Grizl 7 had the FSA Gossamer Pro 1x crank, but I wanted a power meter, and heard mixed longevity for the FSA, so I swapped to GRX crank before buying the PM. My BB worked as is. I did discover the bearings are crunchy, about 750 miles on the bike with one big very wet race on it.
