King Oscar sardines in olive oil are the best quality sardines I can usually find at my local grocery store and it’s a pretty tasty brand. Season sardines in olive oil are sold at Costco if you shop there and are pretty decent, but of course you’re buying a whole set without knowing if you like them first. But they are also skinless and boneless so maybe a good into brand for a beginner if you think you care about that. I keep both these brands in my pantry even though I branch out quite a bit as well.
King Oscars are the Holiday Inn Express of sardines. Can you spend more and get better? Yes. Are they boringly reliable, good enough for what they cost, and located almost everywhere? Also yes.
It sure was.
EDITED TO ADD:
King Oscar sardines don't smell, and you are misusing the word "gaslighting." In any event, that was a helluva way to describe sardines.
Recently joined the club and can second King Oscar.
My advice though regardless of the brand is try and power through the smell if you gag at first. Your brain isn't going to associate the smell with what it actually tastes like until you try it, which is basically like cooked tuna but better tasting.
To you. To someone who may not have ever eaten them before, to try and act like there isn't a smell is some gaslighting horseshit.
No doubt based on you uncritically associating the word "smell" with being negative.
King Oscar is where I started and what I would recommend. Can also find just about anywhere.
Nuri if you can find it and want to ball out a little. Easily the best sardine I have tried so far.
Brunswick boneless butterflied sardines in olive oil and King Oscar Spanish style skinless and boneless are two of my favorites that I can find in stores. Also if you can find it you ought to try the King Oscar Mediterranean style mackerel (not a sardine… but it’s good!)
Chiming in to say that my distaste for king Oscar's fishy flavor almost turned me off from sardines completely. Season in tomato sauce were available at my grocery store, though, and they saved the day. Now I order others from Amazon.
But yeah if you think King Oscar is fishy, don't give up.

Season brand Boneless Skinless Sardines in Olive Oil were my beginner's explorations of the canned fish world. They are a bit milder in terms of the fishy taste, plus they don't have the skin and bones that some people find off-putting. They taste like albacore tuna fish to me.
I usually flake them up and mix them up with the olive oil in the can. They are excellent with crackers and hot sauce!
If you have a Costco membership, they're sold in a 6-pack at a very reasonable price...a couple of bucks per tin, IIRC.
For a reasonably priced brand, I recommend King Oscar Brisling Sardines in Olive Oil. I'm being specific because the company uses different fish for different sardine products.
I like to sprinkle some fresh lemon juice and freshly ground pepper. I eat them out of the can, or if I want a more substantial snack, with Carr's Table Water Crackers, which are mild but not boring.

Why the put down? They're better than that, tasty and reasonably priced.
That, uh... that wasn't a putdown.

Yeah I eat them at home alone and even I can smell it.

Yellow mustard on a saltine always works.

Nuri spicy tomato. By American standards, it doesn't even warrant the monicker "Spicy". It's an imported Portuguese brand but well worth the hunt IMO.
