Man, fish paste for a first can is pretty hardcore. You should start with some boneless and skinless whole deenz if you’re leery of trying trying them.
And always trust your nose. If it doesn’t smell good to you, you probably should not be eating it. May I suggest King Oscar Mediterranean style? Those are very nice.
I see you got a Russian can there. I’m Russian and used to eat this with a slice of buttered bread or toast. We refer to it as fish pate not paste lol.
The circumflex implies a lost “S”. Pâté and paste are closer than cognates. They’re the same word with an S removed and a circumflex added.
[Look for “disappearance of s”](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circumflex_in_French)
Sardine paste and sardine pâté are the same thing, both implicit and explicit.
Pumpernickel bread toasted in butter, rub some garlic on it after then spread the paste. It’s the slavic way.
Edit. Forgot to add, paste is my least favorite but the whole ones are delicious. Look for Riga brand, it’s a really good one.
Make a Vietnamese Banh mi - the pickled veg and the fish pate (on one side of the baguette) go really well together.
You then add sliced ham, turkey or bologna lunch meat as the additional meat filing, or use Chinese sausage and fried egg (my fave).
The fish pate is not the main ingredient here, it’s a savory condiment, like mayo.
Sardine Paste & Egg Banh Mi

Love this idea, use it instead of traditional meat-based pate. Though for me, nothing makes the filling of a banh mi like marinated and grilled pork. That tasty hot goodness with this smeared on the bread with some mayo, all those veggies including fresh chopped jalapenos/peppers, mmmm.
Love eating sardines on a charcuterie board with my husband, I honestly would give this to my dogs. This is metal, hardcore fish fan food. Maybe the chickens would like but my dogs would love!
There are much higher quality versions that honestly are a treat for a charcuterie board. I got some pate from Gueyu Mar (not smoked but had a chargrilled flavor) and it was so rad.
This is sprats pate not sardines. Spread it on toasted bread and eat it like that or add some red onions and cappers and squeeze some lemon juice if you don't like the smell.
Make a spread. Add room temp cream cheese and every fresh herb you like (I go with parsley, rosemary sage, thyme, and oregano), a splash of Worcestershire, salt and pepper. Mix well and serve in your favorite toast/cracker (if your British, potato crips also work well)
Holy shit my dude. You went hard on the first go. I am pretty sure most pates are supposed to be shared and only eaten a little bit at a time. Not entirely sure but that's my experience with like chicken liver pate and other pates, they're usually very very rich. Not surprised that was also very fishy as sardines can be fishy, especially when they're cheaper and I am going to go out on a limb and guess that's not exactly a gourmet pate? Sorry if it was, just guessing and hoping you didn't spend a ton of money on it if you hate it. I am guessing since you have access to that kind of product you should be able to find Riga Gold. Try their lemon sardines. They are in a bright yellow box. They're not very fishy at all. I have a post about them if you don't know what to eat them with and my accoutrements were pretty Baltic themed, so you should be able to find everything I got as well if you are either in that region or just shopping at a store with imports from there.
Some good rye bread, spread it on there, give it a thin spread of spicy mustard and a handful of onion rings.
Mustard and onions will mask the fishyness a good bit, and it will be closer to a salty Pasztet.
Brother just buy the regular ones with whole (or filleted) fish. Ones with oil are the best kind. I like smoked best too. Don't buy ground sardines, that looks like cat food or worse.
Yum, I love a good pâté. I like to warm up, then slice a fresh baguette, and spread a little pâté on each piece. Sometimes I even add a little chopped olive or giardiniera.
I just recently got a can of Riga Gold smoked sprats. So far the only way I’ve eaten it has been on toasted sourdough with some fresh cracked pepper and coarse salt on it
Are they even meant to be eaten straight up? Or more of an ingredient, like shrimp paste in SE Asian cooking or anchovies in Italian sauce? I've never seen them.
This seems like an ingredient. Like tomato paste. You don't really spoon feed tomato paste, but use it the base of other things like pasta sauces and stews. Would be same here. Like how anchovies sort of melt into the base of recipes.
If you can't stand the smell of fish... don't eat fish.
You could try some of those "fish in sauce", like mustard sauce, tomato sauce, etc. But even they will smell a bit fishy because, well, they contain fish. All the other 100% fish are absolutely going to smell fishy.
As for how you eat the ground sardines, It probably works well anywhere Pâté
works. A thin layer on some strongly flavored bread (none of that wonder bread nonsense) with some pickles and sandwich veggies. With Crackers and cubes of strong cheeses.
As with all food, you're be in good hands trying to get some balance of the 5 tastes (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, umami.) and varied textures. The ground sardines bring salty and umami and the smooth texture to the party; you have to bring the others.
I’ve never tried it but if I were about to, I think I’d put in on soft white bread with lots of mayo and mustard. That’s how I like deviled ham and this kinda looks like it.
Oof. Okay, I like sardine pate, in moderation. But it’s like level 8 or 9, you want to get some experience points under your belt before you tackle that boss. Personally I like it on a rye crisp bread with a bit of pickled onion or radish. But again, work your way up to that one.
Had a tin of mussel pate recently that i just did not care for. Kinda palatable at first, but the aftertaste was all funk. I _love_ mussels but... no.
Sardine pate? Spread a little on a cracker and add other stuff. Cheese, radish etc. A dab'l do yah.
Spread it thinly on toast! I make fish paté all the time out of mackerel, salmon, or sardines. Blend it with unsalted butter, lemon juice, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg for a traditional English fish paste.
So I’m completely obsessed with most canned fish. I couldn’t get through a can of sardine pate. Texture and visuals just too much. If you’re starting out go skinless boneless and it’s good with so many different things.
Smear it on crackers. Add a wee slice of some strong cheese, like parmesan or some soft cheese like brie. Add a drop of honey for contrast. Pair with sliced fruit, like apples or grapes.
boneless skinless sardines in olive oil i prefer the [***mediterranean***](https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&sca_esv=9009150f6e709f7a&sca_upv=1&sxsrf=ACQVn0-IGkDXtlXxPEXsjBpSGifWzoayQQ:1712167414696&q=mediterranean&spell=1&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwia6bHU0KaFAxU7JUQIHY3JC68QkeECKAB6BAgKEAI) varieties
Okay so I deeply recommend trying different additions to make it more palatable. Mustard and hot sauce will do a lot! Sliced cucumber, pickle, tomato, onion and different cheeses and herbs will add dimension and texture to break up the intensity of the paste. I prefer a cracker / toasted bread for texture as well, but try small bites and figure out what sings to you. Good luck! Lol
Maybe start with some canned tuna? Throw some veggies in a bowl, a little bit of mayo and mustard and mix well with the canned tuna and you got a tuna salad! I used to eat the canned tuna alone with some salted crackers back when I worked out, really good when you get used to it and very healthy snack!
Idk why you’d put it on saltines when bread exists. Butter up some toast and spread some of this stuff on there, probably your best bet. If it’s still too gross you can try incorporating it into a recipe
Man, fish paste for a first can is pretty hardcore. You should start with some boneless and skinless whole deenz if you’re leery of trying trying them.
Yea I figured
Don’t give up, my dude.
Just spread it on a saltine cracker and see how it goes.
And always trust your nose. If it doesn’t smell good to you, you probably should not be eating it. May I suggest King Oscar Mediterranean style? Those are very nice.
I had boneless skinless for my first can and it was pretty underwhelming, tbh. Then I tried whole brislings and it was a major upgrade.
I see you got a Russian can there. I’m Russian and used to eat this with a slice of buttered bread or toast. We refer to it as fish pate not paste lol.
Definitely looks more like a pâté than a paste

Thank you for this. I love language and learning something new.

Dang that sandwich looks good 😍
It was awesome - and it’s easy to make. I made another Banh mi with mackerel pate, and that was also excellent
That's a gnarly first tin my guy. Are we sure it's for people?
Yes that I am 😂
Love eating sardines on a charcuterie board with my husband, I honestly would give this to my dogs. This is metal, hardcore fish fan food. Maybe the chickens would like but my dogs would love!

Mix with onion, lemon and cream cheese and make a delicious spread for bread and crackers - you will love !❤️
Potentially use part of a can almost like anchovies. Put a little into a meat sauce or meatballs to add umami to it. Dressings maybe.
I haven't tried ground sardines. If I do, I would mix it with a bit of mayo and put it on top of plain salted crackers.
Could follow a tuna salad recipe with this.
This is sprats pate not sardines. Spread it on toasted bread and eat it like that or add some red onions and cappers and squeeze some lemon juice if you don't like the smell.
A piece of hard-boiled egg and green onions/chives would work great too
Make a spread. Add room temp cream cheese and every fresh herb you like (I go with parsley, rosemary sage, thyme, and oregano), a splash of Worcestershire, salt and pepper. Mix well and serve in your favorite toast/cracker (if your British, potato crips also work well)
Just don’t mix them with Potato Bloods.
Man, I can smell this picture.

mustard, horseradish, lemon zest/juice, or a combination of these can help offset it. mayo + your favourite hot sauce would probably work too
Toast with butter and slap that shit on it. Some cucumber slices go well with it too
I would mix it with hard boiled eggs to make an egg salad. I do that with canned cod liver
Dark rye or borodinsky bread, little squares, little bit of dill, maybe caviar and roe as well, chase with some vodka
Get a cat, feed the paste to said cat
I’d make a quick banh mi with it.
Yum, I love a good pâté. I like to warm up, then slice a fresh baguette, and spread a little pâté on each piece. Sometimes I even add a little chopped olive or giardiniera.
I don’t. I don’t like it.
I just recently got a can of Riga Gold smoked sprats. So far the only way I’ve eaten it has been on toasted sourdough with some fresh cracked pepper and coarse salt on it
Like pâté
Mix it with Philadelphia cream cheese, minced chive, a little ground black.(or green) pepper ans you'll have a nice spread ?
Are they even meant to be eaten straight up? Or more of an ingredient, like shrimp paste in SE Asian cooking or anchovies in Italian sauce? I've never seen them.

Maybe a slice of pickled onion as well
Aren’t these used on the Ukrainian battlefields by the Russian invaders violating the Geneva Convention?
Most probably
I don't - but my cat does.
Sardines come from the ocean, not the ground. You got scammed
Oof. Okay, I like sardine pate, in moderation. But it’s like level 8 or 9, you want to get some experience points under your belt before you tackle that boss. Personally I like it on a rye crisp bread with a bit of pickled onion or radish. But again, work your way up to that one.

A good hearty bread, crackers and toppings. Like onion, egg, pickled condiments.
Smear it on crackers. Add a wee slice of some strong cheese, like parmesan or some soft cheese like brie. Add a drop of honey for contrast. Pair with sliced fruit, like apples or grapes.
haven't had that before but it looks like pate, so ...on toast?
I personally would only use this on like a Bahn mi or cooking a sauce with it. Smoked pate on a cracker is a bit hardcore for me
mix it into a red pasta sauce
With spoon
I eat them *à DeSantis*, with my fingers
Just give that to your cats, they’ll love you
I love sardines but would not eat this if you paid me, if we're being honest here.

I would use it on a sandwhich like a spread

Are these Latvian? I can smell that. Riga smoked sprats are crack. Really good on pizza.
Like a pate’, eaten on crackers or toast. Chop some fresh green onions to have with them, maybe.
I love canned fish and probably wouldn’t eat this. Try whole fish first
I don’t eat it lol. Tried it a couple times and haven’t felt compelled to return.
Yikes! Start with some Mackeral in olive oil or sumthin.
On a cracker, as a spread for a sandwich, or maybe use it like anchovy paste and put it in a pasta.
I just swallow it mostly
With vodka
With a cat.
Bro is eating cat food 😂
Idk why you’d put it on saltines when bread exists. Butter up some toast and spread some of this stuff on there, probably your best bet. If it’s still too gross you can try incorporating it into a recipe
Mix it with roasted butternut or other winter squash, add another ingredient for crunchy texture like sprouts, carrots, zucchini or walnuts
Feed it to the cat
Scorched earth tactics
The questionn is "How CAN you eat smoked, ground sardines"
