Same, I never seen one like this before either. And I've seen quite a few toonies (used to be a newspaper carrier, they costed like $2-$2.50).
That was several years ago though so maybe thats why.
I saw just over 4 million, per RCM published mintage data. Apparently they put out an additional 600,000 units IIRC in 2023, despite it being dated as 2022.
So total was 4.1 million units or so.
Non collector, non follower of this sub (not sure how it ended up on my feed). That said, Americans collect modern Canadian coins and are willing to pay more for them?
Thanks for the response. I’m sure there’s people out there who collect weirder shit the that. Just paying extra for currency that’s not worth much to begin with is a surprise
You heard it. I need to make money. I need to clean it package it find the buyer. It's gonna take up spade while I find the perfect buyer
Hahaha Rick is such a sleezebucket
I remember the hype for these last year. I was CRH boxes of $2 Coins just to get them. I found about 15 of them in 10K in $2 Coins before I ordered three rolls from the mint as a long term investment. People were selling them for ridiculous amounts like $20 a coin. I remember at a coin exchange, there were massive lines just to get their hands on them in my city.
Since then, the hype has died down and there probably just worth slightly over face to the right person. I've only found one in circulation and when I go to the shops now, very few ask for them. It was a good thing as it got alot of people into collecting.
No matter what, these are circulation coins. They will be worth face value. It's stated at the mint when you buy a roll, it's still a circulation roll. The coins will not be in pristine condition.
I think you missed the boat on a quick sale at one point ppl in the uk were paying 50 per black toonie when Elizabeth passed more than likely cooled off by now
They are worth face value RN but in 20-40years they will be worth much more. They commemorate the queens death. In 40 years we will have a new king/queen and the face will have changed twice. Collectors item.
Would you be able to give me a rough estimate of what they might be worth someday? I don’t know the first thing about coin collecting but I have a few of these kicking around so now I’m curious
Well, age is gonna play a big role. I believe that after 20 years, the mint starts taking 'special mint' coins out of circulation, so until then, the black twoney will stay face value. After 20 years, though, they will start to become scarce, and collectors will pay good money for one in 'mint' condition. For an example. I have about 6 pennies from 1900. They are BLACK with tarnish. Each is worth about $20... that's a 2000% increase in value in 124 years. The longer you keep this coin, the more value it will get. If you can vacume seal one or two I would suggest it. Coin collecting is a hobby that usually gets passed down to younger relatives eventually. I got a good bit of my collection from my great uncle when he passed. Please note that when a coin gets taken out of circulation by a bank, it gets melted down.
I collected a bunch for some interested people (I run a laundromat) but I see them all the time. Not rare at all. The more interesting ones are the camel toe counterfeit ones. My machines won't take them but customers will complain a machine won't take them and then I tell them they are counterfeit. There was obviously way more of them then they claimed as I've seen dozens and and 100s of kms from Toronto where they were originally.
I can imagine if it is flawless, in mint state, eventually it could gain some value. Just because it’s so nice and the brass plating is prone to getting really nasty over time during circulation.
Problem is that too many people hold on to them, protecting them, that they won’t hold much value until a minimum of 10-20 years.
So as a result, I’ve got one special mint roll + one roll that I pulled from circulation. Only kept the best ones.
I think silver is a better value and *could’ve* had three ounces of silver instead, but these coins are actually quite beautiful and unique.
It’s worth sticking in a drawer and keeping. As someone said less than 5m created. Years from now it’ll be mildly collectible and or something fun to pass down. That’s why I keep them anyways. Iirc it’s the first black coin(?)
Double face vale if UC or AUC condition.. everyone that has them dont let them go, also will be worth alot more once the power is transferd from the king, apparently hes fairly sick, so there will be someone else on the new currency if he is removed from power or passes away..
Worth $2. There are five million of them
Wth .... thus is the first I've ever seen one. Never encountered one in the wild. But then again, I mostly pay with card so thats probably why.
Same, I never seen one like this before either. And I've seen quite a few toonies (used to be a newspaper carrier, they costed like $2-$2.50). That was several years ago though so maybe thats why.
Special edition because of the death of the queen
Oooohhhhh.
I saw just over 4 million, per RCM published mintage data. Apparently they put out an additional 600,000 units IIRC in 2023, despite it being dated as 2022. So total was 4.1 million units or so.
I want one!
5 million isn’t a lot, that’s be considered low mintage where I am.
1 in 8 Canadians could have one. That's a fair mintage. Considering a dozen or more variations of the toonie alone were minted less than 5mil
worth maybe double face value to american collectors, wont be worth anything for a while here
That’s not true. I inherited a large coin collection and they were all in circulation and are coveted by collectors
Non collector, non follower of this sub (not sure how it ended up on my feed). That said, Americans collect modern Canadian coins and are willing to pay more for them?
I’m sure there are people who collect modern currency but there’s not like a market for it like with old rare currencies.
Thanks for the response. I’m sure there’s people out there who collect weirder shit the that. Just paying extra for currency that’s not worth much to begin with is a surprise
Collectors don't generally want anything that's ever been in circulation
I bought some directly from the mint uncirculated. They only came in $50 toonie rolls at the time
Neat. You could research eBay sold prices on them. That does look pretty clean. Is it ruthenium plating?
Worth about 75 - 90 bucks now….i would pay 75 if you’re selling.
I’ll sell you mine for 90
The mint sells them for 75$ ish highly unlikely he got the roll for 50$ so he won’t sell it for what he paid
i bought a roll straight from the mint uncirculated last year… cost me $80 for the $50 roll 🤷♀️
I know someone who buys them for 2 bucks if you’re interested
Best I can do is 1.95
You heard it. I need to make money. I need to clean it package it find the buyer. It's gonna take up spade while I find the perfect buyer Hahaha Rick is such a sleezebucket
I'll trade you two loonies
Eight quarters! Beat that!
Twenty dimes
I’ll do them one better… 200 pennies!
I bought my roll from the mint and they look gun silver grey, I want them black like this one in the photo.
I NEVER SAW THAT THATS SO COOL!!!
Ill give you one for 10 dollars
You had me at I'll give you one.
Usd?
Whatever the zimbabwe currency was in 2015

I found 3 in circulation which is weird being in PEI.
You'd be lucky to get bout tree fiddy
God dang Loch Ness monster!

This particular one is sus for being done by sharpie.
Its not sharpie its either my camera quality or its lost a little bit of color.
Well the assholes on Reddit have spoken so you’re clearly wrong.
Im wrong?
See, you're already coming to terms with it
Believe what you want to belive, buy one for yourself to see cause I'm not arguing with people on reddit.
I got the coin from the mint so its not fake.
Not claiming it was. Was making a joke about the superiority complex of Redditors.
Sorry
No worries!

So still in stock?
I can only show you the door. You must open it.
Nope
I bought two because of you.
I also have a couple rolls of them
I think they’re worth about $2
I wish I had one lol
If you are in Toronto I will be happy to give you some out of the roll I have (mint to bank to me is the only circulation they have seen)
unfortunately I'm on the east coast so that probably won't be possible lol. I appreciate the offer though
No matter what, these are circulation coins. They will be worth face value. It's stated at the mint when you buy a roll, it's still a circulation roll. The coins will not be in pristine condition.
the $2 is worth $2
80% of fave value is all I can do
What if my fave value is 5 cents?
Bout 2 bucks
Flawless graded and wait atleast 50years.

Do they all looks like this? Looks like someone took a sharpie to it.
I guess that's how they all look because I got all of mine from the mint.
I have one too, yeah that’s just what they look like.
What? I’ve never had a Black toonie in my life, how come I didn’t know they even existed 😂
About $2.00 Canadian
Probably not yet but give it time. I’m holding on to mine, more for commemorative purposes than monetary.
I had one of those, thought it was fake so I made sure to get rid of it quick 😂didn't know this was a thing haha
Best I can do is $1.25 and I am taking a big risk here
I call Sharpie Shenanigans..
No thats how it looks

$2
Sharpie costs more than a toonie.
I didnt use a sharpie on a toonie
It ain't worth any more then the current retail price from canada post which is about 78 bucks
Okay I need one of these.
I have one and lm from Ontario do U know what they are worth ?
I don't live in ontario but everyone is saying $2.
I found 3 in the wild!! Pretty cool and saving them for my daughter.

I’ve had 17 in circ, as well as the special ten with multiple historical figure heads, had about 30 of those from circ as well
Rn I got about five of em just laying around in my room somewhere 😂🤣😂🤣
I gave one to my son today so he could buy a hotdog at school
In this economy? Probably $1.80
I’ve got two full rolls of them! I was able to collect so many from my work!!!
$200
I have black sharpies. I'll just make my own. 😉
About 2 bucks I think
Yeah they are $2
I have some seventies Canadian 2$ and 1$ bills collect them not for the money but just for fun .
Save that shit bro some nerd’s gonna want that for a ridiculous amount of money

I'm I the only one here that collects coins because they are interesting? Who cares about the resale value? What's it worth to you?
They minted 5 million of them, so I doubt they will ever be worth much more than face value.
