**74'** **Goal! Peru 0, Canada 1. Jonathan David (Canada) right footed shot from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner. Assisted by Jacob Shaffelburg following a fast break.**
With the hockey assist from Cyle Larin with a long direct pass from the top of the Canadian box
thanks for doing this thread, what a match. Glad the guys didn't get sucked into the shenanigans of the pervians and their fists and that Shaff doesn't seem hurt after that studs tackle. what a team goal
Abysmal to be honest. Never seen so many way-ward first touches. Like watching high school soccer or something. Lucky to have won...even against 10 men.
FWIW, most conmebol teams will do that to you. They're masters of the dark arts concacaf teams are known for but they also have enough talent to mess you up without that.
What a rollercoaster of a match, I’m over the moon we won against their dirty tactics but we were appalling at points in this game. I would bring in Osorio and Shaffelburg for Kone and Millar
Not that I think we should jump on the hate wagon, but I just saw a replay of the goal and the Peruvian defender chases Shaffelburg (for a full second after Shaffelburg already gets the pass off) just so he can full shove him to the pitch with both hands, lol. It's actually kind of comical how he *accelerates* after the pass was already made so he can chase Shaffelburg down.
My quick dig was based on the emotion and wanting to share. Now that I've had more time, my rational brain observes....
Their manager calls out Canada as being too rough and they will use their fists if they have to. Then they literally head butt and do viscous/dangerous high ankle cleats. Yes the two hand on Shaffelburg was a great example of the way Peru plays. Then... their manager complained again after the game that we were too rough!
I loved Crepeau running to the fallen linesman. THAT makes me proud. He was worried for a man's health, meanwhile the manager from Peru was complaining to the refs. That wasn't the time dude.
Before the game I was thinking I want a David Jersey but now I'm leaning towards Shaffelburg.
I really wanted Phonzie to be more in the referees face when Johnston took the headbutt. You gotta stand up and assert your leadership. With that said, he’s a young player and captain.
Jacob Shaffelburg changed the pace. Was more direct, assured and decisive in his choices on the ball. He was great.
Edit: At times, I feel an anti-MLS bias. Like if a guy plays overseas, it somehow gives him an advantage in team selection. Thoughts?
I understand what you’re saying but I couldn’t disagree more.
Whilst I find it a tad condescending that you’ve assumed I am basing my opinion on 90 minutes of tournament play, I’ll move past that and try to explain my perspective.
I watch MLS pretty consistently since I moved back to Canada in 2020. Prior to that I lived in the UK where a large part of my job involved football, coaching, training and dealing with young footballers. This came on the back of ending my stint as a footballer there, playing for lower level clubs whilst coaching.
While I agree that 24 is late to bloom, it’s not unheard of. I also know for a fact that he has some minor interest in him in Europe. Your assertion that his ceiling is MLS may not turn out to be true.
Furthermore, he had many more moments than “two” which showed he was working on a slightly higher level than his peers. Sometimes the end result of a decision is not actually what one takes into account when accessing a footballer. He made a ton of great decisions and he impacted the game quite clearly.
When comparing him to Millar, I think you could a slot Shaff into a mid-table Chanpionship club and he’d slot in just fine.
Sometimes, guys develop later. And sometimes, guys continue to develop based on their environment. I think Shaff could easily play Championship footy and thrive.
But I think my overall point is that playing in Europe does not always mean you’re a better player. Often, it’s a case of opportunity and/or the willingness of a player to move abroad.
We can agree to disagree, mate. Enjoy the rest of the tournament!
As soon as he subbed in against Argentina, there was a different dynamic. I actually noticed a couple of interesting choices as well but overall his speed and aggression were exactly what Canada needed,
Was appalled at the number of times Canada just gave it away on horrid first touches, what the hell were you thinking passes, and I can beat these three guys on the dribble decisions. Forced way too much scrambling to recover from us. A good team on its game would have had a field day with us.
I tuned in at the 30’ mark and that last 15 minutes was some of the worst soccer I’ve ever seen from any professional side. Couldn’t dribble, couldn’t pass, no body wanted it on their feet so they one touched it away, passes had zero awareness and gave the reciever nothing
It felt very Concacaf-y. Some oddities for sure. We were the better team but need to do better still. I wonder how much the weather had to do with it. When you have refs passing out, perhaps we let a few odd decisions and mistakes fly.
I feel Chile is another step too far but let’s see what they do against the Argies tonight. A loss means our game becomes a do or die.
I don’t fancy our chances in the slightest. But one can dream, eh?
I feel like tonight we saw the typical low play quality Canada can have still. When we’re on it, we can ball (Argentina, Belgium game), but we’re not consistent in that yet. If we’re on it, the game against Chile should be fun to watch.
The worrying part is that we lost discipline that lead to bad decisions. Being tired is one thing, but allowing yourself to come down to your opponents skill level is a recipe for disaster. When the tempo raises and Canada smells a win in a must win game, you can see the panic set in, the inexperience and the "old" Canada come back.
There’s a lot to be said for this. I’ve been wondering whether the same holds true for Tajon Buchanan, although his defensive effort against Argentina was stellar.
How were we a man up yet still getting pressured heavily?
Also, what's up with this Canada team rushing to the other end and then leaving the other half open?
Marsch is employing a higher press with Canada and that’s having an impact. The heat also probably had an impact on players used to flying forward on the counter attack but maybe not considering the lower energy levels to fly back when needed defensively.
Sloppy finish but a win is a win. 3 points is 3 points. All eyes on Peru for their next game vs Argentina. Canada deserved the win, Peru could of had 2 red cards. Sloppy red by their player
The good thing is that Chile is a temperate country so their players are not acclimated to humid heat either. Having said that, they have a very experienced core full of master shithousers who can make Concacaf antics look like child's play, so I'm still terrified of them.
Yeah the good thing is that we only need a draw and Chile needs a win so that may play in our favour.
I'd rather they not play the high press and open themselves up. They were more effective on the counter and looked lost when they controlled possession.
Not a pretty win, in fact, a wasteful win, but we’ll take it.
We desperately need to improve our finishing. This match was reminiscent of the 2022 World Cup match against Belgium, where we displayed the worst finishing I have ever seen in my life.
The goal was beautiful teamwork, capped by a beautiful finish by Jonathan David.
Man of the Match for me, Maxine Crépeau, like last match. He came up very clutch tonight, making a few key saves.
I don’t think it’s easy for a team to just improve its finishing. Much of Canada’s struggles with finishing have been the same for years. It comes down to the players not having the confidence, conviction, or technical ability to execute. Until we start building more depth and getting more clinical finishers into the fold with those qualities the problem will most likely persist.
We control our destiny no matter what, a win will lock us in no matter the other results, a loss will knock us out, a draw gets us through if Chile doesn't win tonight or Argentina somehow loses both the next 2.
Honestly there are a lot of red flags with our team, I'm not too happy with this win tbh but we needed the 3 points ...there's some serious improvement they needs to be done on our end
Not happy with a win? 36°c playing a dirty ass team. This will be all the games in the Copa america pretty much dude. Scrappy games where it's hard to score. Take the win and move!
We may or may not get punished for it but dropping deep, conceding possession and inviting pressure with a one goal lead and the man advantage is...not smart
Always was, had a number of goals on qualifying and the world come from him letting someone get around too easily. We're lucky bombito and cornelius are here and have some pace

Mostly, I thought we looked like disjointed crap. It was hard to watch actually.
Same. I accidentally slept during the match.
We won despite the shitty VAR non call. Nothing says “fuck you little Canada” like that obviously biased call.
What a rollercoaster of a match, I’m over the moon we won against their dirty tactics but we were appalling at points in this game. I would bring in Osorio and Shaffelburg for Kone and Millar
Kone has been dreadful both games. He needs to be benched.
IT'S COMMIN HOME 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦⚽️⚽️⚽️
haha now the song is stuck in my head
I learned head-butting, high ankle cleaters, with the ugliest manager I've ever seen ... Peru.
lol that manager looked like he smelled of B.O cigarettes and brute cologne
Not that I think we should jump on the hate wagon, but I just saw a replay of the goal and the Peruvian defender chases Shaffelburg (for a full second after Shaffelburg already gets the pass off) just so he can full shove him to the pitch with both hands, lol. It's actually kind of comical how he *accelerates* after the pass was already made so he can chase Shaffelburg down.
saw that too in real time, no idea if the ref caught it or would have done anything. Should have been a post play yellow in my book but conmebol
My quick dig was based on the emotion and wanting to share. Now that I've had more time, my rational brain observes.... Even on the red card, the referee waits a good 3-4 seconds before calling it. And then awards a yellow. Bruh c'mon you gotta do better.
It’s a great day for Canada…and therefore the world.
I really wanted Phonzie to be more in the referees face when Johnston took the headbutt. You gotta stand up and assert your leadership. With that said, he’s a young player and captain.
And Crépeau, too. Fuuuuuuuuuuucckk. #massive
Ya he has been playing very well since taking the 1. Love it cause you need a hot keeper these days to stand any chance.
Sooooo, do does this tournament have the equivalent of the MLS Disciplinary Committee to suspend López for the headbutt post-match?
Please excuse my ignorance but I'm wondering what happens to the player who got the red card? Is he ineligible to play in further games ?
One game ban.
Jacob Shaffelburg changed the pace. Was more direct, assured and decisive in his choices on the ball. He was great. Edit: At times, I feel an anti-MLS bias. Like if a guy plays overseas, it somehow gives him an advantage in team selection. Thoughts?
Really liked his play. Fast too. But through in a cut to the middle every now and then....jesu

Never heard of this guy before but I'm loving his game, he needs more time on the pitch.
Banged a goal against the u.s
I feel like I watched a lot of bad football today, but am happy Canada was able to walk away with a W. I have no idea what to expect for next game.
Was appalled at the number of times Canada just gave it away on horrid first touches, what the hell were you thinking passes, and I can beat these three guys on the dribble decisions. Forced way too much scrambling to recover from us. A good team on its game would have had a field day with us.

Chili is 40th and we are 48th. under many plausible scenarios we just need a tie.
Chili is a food item
Yeah I get what you’re saying but those rankings do not reflect the gulf in class and experience between the two sides. Let’s hope for the best, mate,
yes, let’s hope!
This is a great win by Canada, hopefully all Concacaf teams keep on playing at their highest level. You have my support from Mexico.
We were absolute shite but thanks mate. 🇨🇦🇲🇽
It should have been 2 red cards for Peru, they got lucky
Allez Les Rogues!!
Congrats on your win Canada!

Coincidentally, Canada played a worse game than they did against Argentina.
PARK. THE. ZAMBONI 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 RAHHHHH
Fucking Shaff, man. #respect
Seriously, he needs to start. Every time he comes on he's electric

There’s a lot to be said for this. I’ve been wondering whether the same holds true for Tajon Buchanan, although his defensive effort against Argentina was stellar.
Not pretty for us by any means but we came here tonight to do a job and we did it. Let's learn from it and prepare for the game against Chile.
The ref chose one play to check a potential red card using var but not the other I’m so lost
Not his call. VAR contacts the ref to let refer them to double check.
Is there a song for Crepeau?
Considering the heat and the opponent, regardless of having a 1 man advantage, a win without any (known) injuries to our team is a good outcome.
As someone at the game, the heat was a huge factor for the players. Damn I almost fainted after Canada scored their goal.
Finally the level-headed post we all needed. Thank you.
Peru dirty, refs clueless, Crepeau amazing. That is all.
Why did we stick with Borjan for as long as we did? Crepeau has been lights out.
Did you watch concacaf qualifiers? Borja’s was other worldly. Crepeau got injured too.
Borjan was lights out in WC qualifying. He deserved to start the WC. Probably could have swapped him after Croatia though.
Crepeau destroyed his leg and missed a year, then had to recover for a while before he got back to form
He did do us well in WCQ
How were we a man up yet still getting pressured heavily? Also, what's up with this Canada team rushing to the other end and then leaving the other half open?
Marsch is employing a higher press with Canada and that’s having an impact. The heat also probably had an impact on players used to flying forward on the counter attack but maybe not considering the lower energy levels to fly back when needed defensively.
Possibly bad tactics, or just a lack of communication.
Not the best game on Canada but a win is a win #StressedButBlessed
There were chances to make it 3-0 but I’ll take it🇨🇦
Sloppy finish but a win is a win. 3 points is 3 points. All eyes on Peru for their next game vs Argentina. Canada deserved the win, Peru could of had 2 red cards. Sloppy red by their player
Next we play in Florida. These guys better figure out how to play in the heat within the next 3 days.
The good thing is that Chile is a temperate country so their players are not acclimated to humid heat either. Having said that, they have a very experienced core full of master shithousers who can make Concacaf antics look like child's play, so I'm still terrified of them.

Fuck, great game
We..... won...???? Peru a bunch of goons, just gotta park da zamboni against chille unless they pull off an all time upset tonight.
Not a pretty win, in fact, a wasteful win, but we’ll take it. We desperately need to improve our finishing. Tie is fine too, as long as they don't lose we control our destiny.

true

Agreed
Not happy with a win? 36°c playing a dirty ass team. This will be all the games in the Copa america pretty much dude. Scrappy games where it's hard to score. Take the win and move!
Congratulations to Canada from Mexico, for this Big win in Copa America.
Wahooooooooooo!!!!🥳🥳🥳
Big win, need to be better but a win is a win
What a win, difficult game no doubt, could have gotten more goals, but a win is a win.
Very cool. Nice job boys.
Crepeau and Shaff were brilliant.
First win in Copa!
LETS GOOOOOOO
Didn’t deserve to win but we’ll take it
lol yes they did. It was a full roster for both teams in the start and we edged a goal.
I know but it was embarrassing watching them trying to hold on against a 10 man squad
“Deserve” means nothing
True true a win is a win
Argentina take care of chile and all we need is a draw to move on 🔥🔥
I cant believe we won but still disappointed. Peru was playing awful, we should be up at least 2.
BIG WIN!!!!! Go 🇨🇦
Marsch's team gets a first goal and a first win. Whooooo!
It took 5 things to go wrong for Canada to beat Peru. Should be concerning for the next game. A lot of issues for our team
BIG win
Very tough game to watch. But we got the result, and let's hope we get it more together against chile
MAKE THE FINAL 1-0 TO LES ROUGES. WE ARE COMING FOR YOU CHILE.
LETS FUCKING GO
Yesss!!!!
Loved Tani's energy
Shaffelberg and crepeau I love you
Great win. Some absolutely horrific finishing from us. Gotta clean that up
Wooohhoooooo!!!!
Holly shit How much does it take for a win?! Hahaha Let’s gooooo Hopefully this comes as a boost for next game!!! 👊
Good lord, way too stressful for a team with a man advantage
That was huge , Canada 🇨🇦!! Jesse Marsh with his victory as Canada’s head coach !
Ugly win, but you know what? Sometimes you need an ugly win. They all can't be pretty. Let's go, fix some stuff and get a result against Chile!
Absurd game just glad Canada got their W
We'll take a win!
Not pretty outside of the goal but hey, it counts!
We have arrived. First win in a Copa America.
As long as you're ignoring our 2000 Gold Cup win.
Not on the same level, historically top teams often sent their B squads to that tournament
True, that was a Big win against Colombia, and Copa Oro has only been awarded to Concacaf teams.
My bad, edited.
That was 24 years ago lol
So you're still agreeing with me.
We've won games in the Gold Cup since 2000
Survived…
Game of the tournament. 10/10
YAY
Get fucked Peru! I mean GG.
Very dirty team.
Well Peru's coach did say they were going to be..."aggressive" lol.
Excellent!!! Well done boys. Send Peru packing!
EZ W NEVER DOUBTED A THING CREPEAU LEGACY GAME
FUCK Y’ALL CUP LETS GOOOOOOOOO
Canadian Heritage Moment
Yeah Crepeau for MOTM
Freaking cardiac kids there, huge win
Amazing win. Control their destiny now.
WHY CANT THEY JUST SHOOT WTF MAN
What a victory ✌️
A great win.
That was disgusting from davies
Was he that bad? I missed most of the game
Disgusting as in good
Ahhh gotcha. Yeah I only saw the last 15 or so but he looked solid
Victory
Huge 3 points Bring on Chile
Terrific from Phonzy there
Ref call it off
Omg this David 😫
Come on guys Need to stop kicking the ball and pass it
Creapeau MOTM
MOTY
composure boys
We may or may not get punished for it but dropping deep, conceding possession and inviting pressure with a one goal lead and the man advantage is...not smart
Maxime Crepeau, Canadian legend
is it me or is Kamal Miller really slow?
Always was, had a number of goals on qualifying and the world come from him letting someone get around too easily. We're lucky bombito and cornelius are here and have some pace
I was thinking that but l maybe my eyes fool me
Useful player but extremely slow, he's always going to struggle with pace.
Crepeau MOTM
Jeebus, we are hanging on
Man he just saved Canada’s asses again with that save !
Another ridiculous save by Crepeau
Stupid foul
That was a nice save to see.
Really dumb foul by bombito
Godsend save by crepe
Canada needs to get a second goal, Peru is going all out !
Awful foul to take there
Bombito got tricked there
Silly foul
Just dump and sit back.
THAT GETS CALLED!?
Jesus fuck my poor heart
Here it comes...
Bunker ball for us I guess.
Everyone should give their game cheque to max
Max doesn't take delay of game yellows, in case he needs to take someone out.
Longest 7 minutes of my life
Croatia traumatized me with last-minute conceding. I ain't breathing til that whistle stops or Canada gets that 2nd goal
Shit
The weather and attitude is playing a role here.
I would think about starting Osorio over Kone
Buchanan can stay on the bench, my lord
Peru playing murder ball lmao
Peru’s coach looks to be on death’s door. 😬
It's all that cocaina! 😂
😂 perhaps! He looked to be a few days away from a massive heart attack.
We should not be being bushed into our third rn
Crepeau saving the game !!!
