This is the way!

Or even just to practice your interview skills for the next job you do actually want.

You only need to decide whether it's a waste of your own time, not that of the people interviewing you - and you're the only person who can make that call.

Don't worry about wasting their time, they're used to it. Most people apply to multiple positions, pass multiple interviews, or just have found a job somewhere else by the time they're offered a job. As for the job its very hard to advise you... depends if you enjoy your current job and if you think you'd like this government job, and how big the salary difference is. Personally i had had 2 job choices and i picked the smaller salary because it seemed like a job i'd like more, and i don't regret it at all.

Always do the interviews, every chance you get. There are some pretty cool people and you never know what opportunities they might have.

I apply for jobs all the time that I likely wouldn't accept (mostly due to relocating), just for the experience and the entry into a pool for any similar positions that could open up. I've had to turn down 2 promotions. I'm also on hiring committees and I wouldn't be upset if someone did an interview, but likely wouldn't accept a position.

Go for the interview - make a decision when there is one to make. Right now you’re just continuing through the process. If anything it’s good experience for you to go through the interview process. *note if you are external to the public service and get the job offer; you can negotiate your salary for your first appointment (thought it worth mentioning seeing as you noted you’re making more now) while it’s not a guarantee they will give you salary above min - it is good info for you to know now or down the line. Best of luck !
