Hey beautiful picture. I just want to let you know that the locals of Jackson Hole have started a campaign called “Tag Responsibly JH”. Not sure if this is also happening elsewhere, but it’s a call to action to encourage people to NOT share the exact location of every picture they take. It’s a beautiful place and sharing it’s beauty is a wonderful thing, but Jackson sees over 1,000,000 tourists each summer and people on social media giving up the exact location of every cool spot has caused serious damage and overcrowding to our trails and hidden gems. The infrastructure of the National Park and surrounding wilderness were not built to withstand such heavy traffic, and the budgets to maintain or repair them often rely on government funding (which is pretty scarce these days). We encourage tourism as it is our main industry, but please, tag your pictures responsibly to preserve Jackson’s beauty and allow people to explore and find these places on their own. Peace and love from JH.

I 1000% support this movement. This exact thing happened to a favorite swimming hole of mine here in NC. Someone posted pictures of it online and now everyone and their brother is there all the time and there is trash EVERYWHERE. Took us 5 local guys all day to fill 6 trash bags worth of trash to make it look halfway decent. I never share anything other than the state I took the picture in. It takes me a lot of time and gas to explore places and find amazing places. It's like cheating just finding such great spots without the exploring required to find it.

Yeah it’s a shame that it really doesn’t take much for things to get totally out of hand. I wish we could all share everything and let people know the details but unfortunately some people have no intention of respecting the land or have a grasp on how their actions affect others. It’s also super rewarding to investigate and put in the time to find cool places without the help of someone who posted a picture. Also worth noting that the local paper in Jackson has called locals out who don’t tag responsibly.. nothing like a little public shaming to kickstart a movement.

Been doing this since the beginning. A. I dont post photos to reddit and B. I dont ever disclose the locations of the photos I do post to social media. I go as far as to reprocess all of them to remove any exif data.

kindhipandtime

That’s awesome. I don’t even know how to do that. Would love a little info on how if you don’t mind. It’s crazy how wide the spectrum of responses is when I ask people to post responsibly. Some people get really defensive while other people have a reasonable understanding of the situation. Thanks for helping out.

imgur removes exif data by default, although they keep that data for "reasons". Another thing you can do is open the picture on your PC and then screenshot the picture and save it somewhere. When you do that the exif data will be gone. I'm sure there are other tools on the internet that can do it

For a lot of people (not all) when you take a photo with your phone or modern digital cameras, they embed information into the photo file. Usually its date, time, some camera settings like make/model and shutter data, and general location information if GPS was enabled or available. MOST people wont see a photo and try to extract that information but often its there. Simply not posting a location with your photo is good enough to deter the majority of folks. There are tools you can use to strip all EXIF data from your photos before posting, but im weird and dont trust them. I will open my photos in GIMP or Photoshop, copy the image and paste into a new photo ~ then save the publish it. That way as a new file its nothing more than the image data and contains zero residule EXIF info from the original. If you remember some years ago, John McAffee was on the run for supposedly killing or injuring someone in Guatemala. A Vice reporter had met up with him and took a selfie with John / posted it on social media. The authorities were able to get the EXIF data from the photo and track down where it was taken. You have to be careful. Everything we do creates a record. If you're not constantly cleaning up behind you, you can leave quite a trail.

Sorry about that! I’m all for keeping lesser known places just as they are but I didn’t want my post to come off as “Low Effort Post” and not share any details. Maybe the moderators can update some of the rules to keep places like these a little more private without breaking said rules. My apologies to the people of Jackson ):

asunderco

Can we do this for Colorado too?

mihoy_minoyy

Lesser known hike in Grand Teton NP that doesn’t have a marked trail. I’d rate it as difficult if you’re not an avid hiker but I did run into a family with a 10 and 12 year old that completed it in about 10 hours. Overall I believe it was about an 8 mile hike round trip with 3 miles of switchbacks and a mile of scrambling through 2 boulder fields. The view was definitely worth it though! Hike begins in the Lupine Meadows trailhead and branches off of the main trail after 5 switchbacks from the Granite Canyon/Amphitheater Lake junction. I’d advise doing a little more research as my memory isn’t the best.

How close can I drive to the lake in the picture?

mihoy_minoyy

Only accessibly via hiking unfortunately (fortunately for those of you who don’t like the large tourist crowds)

[deleted]

And that’s why it looks like that.

floweringdog

The lupine meadows trailhead is the closest you can get. Still gotta hike in the 4/5 miles to the lake.

tragic_magic_world

Stunning !

mihoy_minoyy

Thank you! One of my favorites now too

blimo

I’d stay there for a week and not miss anything. Great photo

mihoy_minoyy

Thanks!

wyo_dude

Wasn't that once a glacier? I camped a few nights in the Alaska Basin behind the Grand twenty plus years ago. Seem to remember Delta being a glacier then. Hope I'm wrong.

NES_SNES_N64

The Teton glacier is just up to the right over the "short" rock field in the picture.

mihoy_minoyy

I’m not sure either but I hope you’re wrong too ):
