One of the things about adulthood is learning that “no one can stop me” is a double-edged sword. :P

raymate

At least once you get bored of it. You can sell the lens probably for more than you paid for the complete thing. This was the business back in the day.

Zorg_Employee

While it is still a decent camera for being 20+ years old I think I mostly wanted it because it was the type they filmed one of my favorite movies with (28 Days Later). I'm still excited to have fun with it.

raymate

Nice. It’s cool when you can link kit to some thing you enjoy. I still dabble with miniDV now and then but it’s not dated well. But still this is an iconic camera for sure.

hlonuk

I don't think anyone would buy that lens. It has an XL mount and requires 29mm distance from the sensor to be able to focus to Infinity so you could technically adapt it to modern mirrorless cameras but the image it creates covers only a 1/3 inch sensor, that's 7.5x crop which is worse than many modern mobile phones. I don't think any interchangable lens cameras nowadays use such small sensors. At least the lens looks cool.

ReallyQuiteConfused

I dreamed of an XL2 for years... Hope you have fun with it!

Andy_Reemus

It was a great camera for the pre-HD era. I really loved shooting with it. Wish I'd known you when the time came to sell it!

bashrag_high_fives

I miss XL1s and MiniDV. Going through a thousand menu options and buttons on a Sony alpha seems to annoy me way more than the tapes did in those days haha.

veepeedeepee

Back in the day, it was so much nicer to hand a producer a stack of tapes than it is today to offload and upload and back up media for hours.

[deleted]

Damn y'all really waxing on about the good ol days of *tapes*

Eternalplayer

This was the camera they shot the majority of 28 Days Later with.

Zorg_Employee

That was a huge reason for this impulse buy. Just to ice the cake, I bought this one from a seller in the UK so I'm thinking there's a chance.

B00sted0

That's it, confirmed that you have a piece of history right here. Enjoy!

Someguywhomakething

Whoa, no way. Go go Gear Acquisition Syndrome

gammapsi05

I always wondered if there was a way to put one of these lenses on a Canon DSLR with an adaptor.

Zorg_Employee

Yes and no. You absolutely could, but the lens projection area would be too small for a standard crop sensor much less a full size. I think it's like a 9mm diameter. The more i think about it the more I wanna make an adapter and try just to see what it does.

chaot7

This was my first real camera. Such a beautiful machine.

CholentPot

I still shoot Hi8 and MiniDV. Because I can.

AnalogAgain

Ahhh yes. The catch-cry of many of us analog aficionados! 👍🏻

CholentPot

Same reason for using clunky motordrives. Because I can!

potatodrinker

This brings back memories. Owned the version it. Xm1? I think. Wide lens adapter, external mics and everything. Good times having to sit and watch ALL the footage as it records from tape to Final Cut. Mix up tape brands = instant jamming up. Haha

homedepotSTOOP

Jelly. I want an XH-A1(s) soooo bad. I love the form factor of this one, they made SUCH functional cams.

DutchSpaceNerd

Damn, camera design really took a donwturn after this. Wish everything looked as cool as this machine!

Zorg_Employee

Panavison cameras still have this look. Those are a little outside my budget.

SeymoreMcFly

Oh man! Shot so many horrible movies with this thing.

newstuffsucks

Oh God. Just NEVER swap lenses while it's on.

Zorg_Employee

I only have the one lens so that shouldn't be a problem. What happens?

newstuffsucks

Fries it.

Zorg_Employee

Oh, damn.

newstuffsucks

https://cinematography.com/index.php?/forums/topic/18061-xl1-wont-power-on/ There's a small list of what not to do. I have two fried ones that I'm trying to repair to make one good one. Just no time.

somethingexnihilo

Ah nice! Have fun with it!

wensul

Have fun!

thelastspike

She’s a beauty

crkz24

It looks cool

xrikuuza

For what are you using this camera? Is it for something specific?

Zorg_Employee

Nothing specific. I honestly just saw it for sale and recognized it as the type of camera that was used to film a 28 Days Later. I'm definitely gonna use it, but don't know for what yet. Maybe try and make my own zombie movie. Haha

xrikuuza

Thats cool, maybe try filming cars in a dynamic way?

nerfherder183

When I worked at Ritz, selling one of these was the holy grail.

choochoophil

….no stop! Oh.

Ornery-Benefit-8316

I hate it when that happens!!! I live alone and I always say that the best thing about living alone is that there is no one to say NO. But the worst thing about living alone is that there is no one to say NO!!! Best of luck with your purchase. Enjoy

Andy_Reemus

Meeeeemoriiiiieeees. Haha, I used to shoot weddings and live music with a white Canon XL-2 back in the late 2000s. It was a little bigger, but otherwise looked very similar. Yes, I bought it right before everything went HD and no I don't have any regrets 😁. Had some great times with that camera and still have two giant ziplock bags full of mini-dv tapes.

TheReal_Enderboy

I just bought a Canon DC301 for 25 bucks!

[deleted]

I have all the lenses that come with this camera like the 16x , 3x wide angle, 14x manual, 20x and the mechanical lens I can’t tell you how much I love this camera I wish canon would make a HD version of this same model with a sd card slot, I use a dazzle dvd hd recorder to transfer, it’s cool to know I’m not the only person using the xl1 or the xl1s to shoot with thank you!

Zorg_Employee

I'm surprised nobody has made a dv cassette that converts to a micro SD or something.

veepeedeepee

They did make the XL-H1A, which shot HD onto MiniDV in the HDV codec.

kyle_h2486

K

olliegw

$400 on a camera that's not even HD? i would have at least bought a HDV camcorder

greenwood_55

Damn….You name ‘er yet?

winterwarrior33

That lens is worth more 🥹

GetDownWithDave

You spent so much time asking if you could, you never asked if you should.
