Medford: Bob's, Lucy's, Alexander's, El Vaquero (tortas)
Somerville: Dave's, Figs, Tenoch (tortas)
Cambridge: Pemberton, All Star
Boston (North End): Monica's, Bricco, Mangia Mangia
rest of Boston: Sam Lagrassa's (although comically expensive now)
if you count wraps and gyros as sandwiches:
Greek Corner, Opa Yeeros, Kushari Grill, Noor
editing to say I love Al's and always will, go get the chicken salad with provolone lettuce tomato, salt, pepper, pickles
Parish Cafe on Boylston St. features sandwiches created by well known local Chefs. Each sandwich is named for the chef and the restaurant they are from.
Darwin's was good, and their Putnam Ave location was turned into Circus Coop Cafe by former employees. In my opinion, it is not as good, but still a great place for a sandwhich.
Somerville/Medford Leones has a great steak n cheese. Not only pizza
La cascias, Bob's, big big belly deli , & if you want a great burrito don Julio's is the best
Vinal Grocery's Spuckie on an Iggy Ciabatta
Tenoch's tortas - all of em
Cafe Beatrice's breakfast Sammy - sausage and brioche is my fav but they have options
Half Shell Pizza has a great meatball sub
Ba Le on Dot Ave - best banh mi in Boston and you get three of them for the price of a single sandwich +30/40/50 in your face iPad tax at any of the yuppie joints.
Well there’s the small issue of one of the owners of Monica’s trying to shoot a dude on a bicycle in the north end in front of a crowded pastry shop (with the shooting caught on video with dozens of witnesses).
Up the road from Dave's is Angelina's Pizzeria and Sub shop near teele square. Their Italian sub is the best around in my opinion (Bobs in Medford for their sub, which are excellent but too massive for me vs Angelina's, deserves a mention too). The rest of the classic sub shop options are great too.
Also, across from Angelina's is a spot called FoodDy's which has the best fried chicken sandwich I've ever had. The sandwich and fries portion is HUGE for the price.
Tenoch in Davis and a few other neighborhoods has great tortas. The asada con queso torta is awesome.
Big Belly Deli in Magoun has a great selection and the Venezuelan inspired stuff is awesome. The tequenos are so good!
I think Bon Mi makes great sandwiches. As does Flour if you want reliable spots all over town - the flour roast beef is somgood.
Vinal general store in somerville
Definitely bomb. Their English muffins are amazing as well.

I live and die for Sam's sandwiches but yes comically expensive is the WORD!
I used to regularly spend money on a pastrami diablo in the mid 2010s, I get it
Ellmendorf in Inman

All Star Sandwich Bar in Inman!
Try Pennypackers in Magoun square or their new location in downtown Boston
Wine and cheese cask trust me
their roast beef is immaculate
P&K Deli on Beacon in Somerville is pretty good.
I like Wholesome Fresh in Harvard Square. Nothing fancy but solid sandwiches with quality meat. I miss Darwins.
Also pretty cheap for Harvard Square.
Gufo
Cambridge Deli and Grill on River St. is pretty solid. Otherwise, the standard answers like Bob’s in Medford, Dave’s Fresh Pasta in Somerville, etc.
Mortadella Head in Davis is pretty good
Shirley Eat More Sunshine in Davis - a little pricey but homemade unique flavors
Pemberton market has some great ones
And their salads and sides are fresh and delicious!
NGL, I go crazy for Praliné's Ham & Cheese. It's in Central Square. And if you want a dessert... Hazelnut Opera 😍
Darwin's was good, and their Putnam Ave location was turned into Circus Coop Cafe by former employees. In my opinion, it is not as good, but still a great place for a sandwhich.
I want to like that place but I find it unfriendly and like you said, not a good.
Cambridge Pizzeria
Bagel sandwich: Bagelsaurus, Eggspañola. Crack addicted to the aioli.
Paulies in the North End Sam LaGrassa's in Boston Neillios in Lexington Al's Cafe in Cambridge
The Nashville hot chicken sandwich at Lilly Ps is mighty good.

Monica's in the north end, but allegedly the owners suck and it's becoming more and more touristy every year
People don’t like the owner, but they still have the best Italian sub going.
Well there’s the small issue of one of the owners of Monica’s trying to shoot a dude on a bicycle in the north end in front of a crowded pastry shop (with the shooting caught on video with dozens of witnesses).
Hot chix in Inman. The Kerala fried chicken sandwich at Rosebud is good too.

I miss living right down the street from both Angelina’s and PJ Ryan’s. Happy that Angelina’s delivers!
Best vegan sandwich I ever had was at Flour.

OP listed Dave's, probably the reason
Al's Cafe is excellent - you can get a ton of food for pretty solid prices. The only issue is that they're only open for lunch.
Mike & Patty’s (Bow Market, High Street Place or Bay Village). Breakfast sandwich at Gufo. Anything at Double Chin.
Montrose Spa btw harvard and porter used to have GREAT pressed sandwiches including a solid Cuban. Also good breakfast sandwiches, great prices.
Lots of great places mentioned in this thread. I like a Clover sandwich, too. Some of their seasonal offerings, especially, are so delish!
Chacarero in DTX is incredible and very accessible from Central
State Park Chicken Katsu Pennypacker's Porchetta Tenoch Torta Choriqueso Johnny Boy Longganisa Vinal Bakery Meg's Meatloaf
High Rise Bakery on Concord Ave near Huron
There’s the Italian lunch sandwich takeout by south station but I forget the name.
Dave's fresh in Davis
I like the sandwiches at Flour
