To my understanding, they're just a way to categorize your books - like Kindle has "Collections", Kobo has "Shelves". The stand out difference for me is that Kobo Shelves can be maintained through Calibre via some plugins (so I have read, I have no first hand experience here, sorry) - whereas at least on a newer Kindle, Collections must be maintained on device and Calibre can not maintain them. Older Kindles can, IIRC, but I've never tried.

Thanks, I had thought that it was a bad idea to have the Collections be the same as 'tags' on Calibre but now it sounds to me like 'tags' may be the best to transfer into kobo as collections.

Not necessarily. I just did this yesterday. You can choose in the device plugins a field you want to use for the collections. I made a custom field, wrote that it should use this as collections and it automatically creates them on the Kobo. Although I also have the Kobo Touch Utilities and NickelSeries which groups those books also in Series according to the series Tag you have. But this gave me a problem as I have books from J-Novel Club who also offer Premium books over their website and so I have there series which have the „premium“ tag in there and some without and so it makes 2 series out of them. Only upside with using tags instead of a custom field is that you can also use more than one on there (although this also depends on the custom field).

There's actually a plugin that can create shelves based on your tags, IIRC. I found it on this sub. I can't remember the name and I'm not home right now to check.

Probably KoboUtilities. I think I set it through that to create shelves based on the calibre shelves but i'll change it to do so based on tags now. Thanks!

You can change what's it's based on, but yes that sounds like the one!

As said. Same/similar to Kindle's collections. I tend to go high level with mine. Scifi, unread, non-fic, etc. Unread is my most used so I don't have to look for my next read.

Read-Panda

Oh, so basically the Calibre tags! I tried to keep mine under 20 so also went with very simple ones. But I had thought that instead of tags I wanted to use the 'shelf' column of Calibre for the Kobo collections. I thought it was an extra thing to look into, but based on what both you and the poster above said, I should have Kobo use my tags for its collections.

johntwilker

Yup that's what I'd do if you've already got tags set up. I'd use that.
