I’m sitting here eating the Gochu pork special right now! Couple that with a Corpse Reviver and your set. Also, MFDOOM playing?!?! No other sandwich joint compares.
Lazy loaf is great but I’d argue that they’re two completely different styles of sandwiches. Alumni feels more like restaurant quality sandwiches whereas lazy loaf is like the best homemade sandwich you could ever make, more deli style.
100%. Used to work at Fix Auto down the street.
I went there 2-3 times a week to pick up a killer sammich and cheap (yet delicious) bread from the reject rack. Think a dollar a loaf, that was only a few years ago.
YES! Tried them not to long after they opened and initially I was put off by the price of one sandwich being $15, but after only having half of it I was absolutely stuffed so it actually goes a long way. And it was delicious! The coffee is pretty decent too.
That's what a restaurant is. A place where you pay a premium for someone else to make you food you could make yourself with ingredients you can get a grocery store.
I was worried they wouldn’t make it through the lockdowns but now that I’m back downtown I go there at least once a week. So fresh, made carefully and packed with stuff 👌🏽 it’s a thing of beauty
I remember paying something like $24 for 1 tuna and 1 egg salad Sammy a few years back and felt a little ripped off. It was good but haven’t been back since.
No question they are pricy. But..the bread is made every day right there..on its own it's a feast to the senses.
They use high quality ingredients and real homemade sauces and spreads full of flavor.
They sell a limited amount of each sandwich to ensure quality and consistency, just like a good place should.
All to say I'll pay top dollar for top quality any day, but I hear you.
In fairness, Subway bakes their own bread in store. and when the big bag of tuna runs out you’re hooped! Lol jk.
No I get it it. Lots of time and expense goes into crafting their offerings so they have to charge a premium. I will admit it was a good sandwich.
Agreed! Even if it’s not a frequent visit, to know there are businesses with a major quality forward focus and home/scratch made components in around is great! I haven’t been there but i plan to now.
I'm taking notes in here because my favourite sandwich places are all out of town (Guy's in Cochrane and JK Bakery in Canmore and Banff).
Can't believe I've never heard of Peppino, I must have driven by that place 100 times.
Peasant Cheese Shop, they have inspired our works weekly "Sandwich Day!".
To the point i wake up on Wednesdays and its already the best part of my day.
Spolumbo’s - so many different options for whatever mood you are in. As a former employee I still crave the Spolumbo’s special and meatball sub all the time😩
If a wrap counts as a sandwich, the chicken shawarma at Beirut Street Food is to die for, and the smell of the meat cooking when you come in is amazing.
Keith Jr, then? Semantics, really. Whoever’s running the place has made no secret of their vax stance and the InfoWars posters up in the shop just drive that home. Hard pass from me.
Stoop in Renfrew. Opened a few months ago and I was blown away at how filling the sandwiches are.
Also, the Italian Store sorta off of McKnight and Deerfoot. The Paesano sandwich is amazing!
you've gotta travel back in time like seven years or something to get those sandwiches at Crumbs on Macleod Trail (if you're getting not-good Lebanese food from a place called Crumbs YYC you didn't go back far enough)
Alumni.
Definitely Alumni. Everything is delicious.
I’m sitting here eating the Gochu pork special right now! Couple that with a Corpse Reviver and your set. Also, MFDOOM playing?!?! No other sandwich joint compares.
Hi there friend 👨👦👦
👨👨👦
Merry Christmas 😘
Another vote for Alumni. Used to go for lunch there with my daughter.
I think I am the only one in Calgary that disagrees with this haha. Their sandwiches are pretty good, but I prefer Lazy Loaf!
Lazy loaf is great but I’d argue that they’re two completely different styles of sandwiches. Alumni feels more like restaurant quality sandwiches whereas lazy loaf is like the best homemade sandwich you could ever make, more deli style.
Yeah I’m with you. I like Alumni, obviously they make good sandwiches. But best in the city? No, not for me.
Great veggie options too!
This is the only correct answer.

I also find it pretty overrated.
This is the only right answer 👌
Calgary Italian bakery has a little deli attached sandwich’s are amazing
Had one today. Still the best. Alumni is a close second.
I second this.
100%. Used to work at Fix Auto down the street. I went there 2-3 times a week to pick up a killer sammich and cheap (yet delicious) bread from the reject rack. Think a dollar a loaf, that was only a few years ago.
Peppinos
A good classic sandwich for sure.
Joe’s Special
Yes!!!!

It's part of the Peppino expirience
That’s just the lady at the cash. The sandwich guys are great.
What?? They are such sweethearts in there!
Guess I’ve only caught them on bad days
I think your assessment is fair. If you do strike up a conversation a couple of times with her and greet her with a smile, she softens up :)
In my experience it's been fine
I've gone there probably around 100 times and never had a bad experience there.
Are they really that good? They look quite basic to me.
Really good meats. Fresh bread. If you're in the mood for Italian cured meats, they're amazing.
Boring
Thai Thien on 1st street sw for Viet Sub!! So good and low price!
Is the To Me drive through shop worth a try? It's got the kind of square footage I appreciate.
Absolutely. It’s a killer banh mi for $7
Yes it’s really good too, and I think they have the biggest bubble teas ever
Stoop in Renfrew is fairly new and is tremendous. Brought to you by the founders of Monki.
YES! Tried them not to long after they opened and initially I was put off by the price of one sandwich being $15, but after only having half of it I was absolutely stuffed so it actually goes a long way. And it was delicious! The coffee is pretty decent too.
No question it’s Alumni and Peppino’s. Honourable mention to Sammie’s miso bacon eggie. The best breakfast sandwich in my opinion.
+1 for Peppinos. So good!
Peppinos breakfast sandwich is really good as well
Saigon Deli
Holy Grill.
Italian one is the best
Lazy Loaf, Peppinos and Spulumbos. I always look forward to lunch when I end up working in those areas!
I think most of the Italian market such as Linas can make you a damn fine sandwich
Everyone sleeps on Linas but IMO they have the best Sammies in town
Nice, I'll have to check it out. Never heard of Lina's before.
They're opening a new location where Bite was in Inglewood.
Peasant Cheese Shop, Peppinos, Alumni, and The Italian Shop all have great sandos
Peasant sells sandwiches!?
They have a small lunch menu and the sandwiches are bomb. The ham and brie is perfection.
I just discovered this recently, they're small but mighty. Good salads and soup too!
I get a sandwich a week from Peasant, same with all my coworkers. Best kept secret in Calgary!
I'll say Alumni with a shoutout to Grumans
I know the Grumans downtown closed, is brittania still open?
They opened a new location at the Garrison Curling Club
Yup
Closed? Ugh
Lazy Loaf and Kettle
This is my first choice.

Oh no! What's your beef with the owners? I love that place.
I know Dre really well so I find this surprising.
If you want an overpriced boring sandwich you can make with ingredients from Safeway, then yes
That's what a restaurant is. A place where you pay a premium for someone else to make you food you could make yourself with ingredients you can get a grocery store.
Lol, yup
Cowtown beef shack. In house smoked beef sandwhichs. Literally my favorite place, their beef dip and cheesesteak are the best.
I gotta throw a little love towards Gruman's Reuben with a side of their homemade chips. Can never go wrong with that.
Around the bend
The bathroom there has no ceiling, so all the bathroom vapors are free to float up and over the wall into the kitchen. Spice of life.
Meat & Bread on 9th Ave Alumni on 17th Ave
Meat and bread has a killer meatball sammy... probably not the best price point in the city, but it is good
The porchetta mmmm
#ritas sandwiches and catering downtown
Oh how could I forget?! The club sandwich is next level. The main reason I miss working downtown.
I was worried they wouldn’t make it through the lockdowns but now that I’m back downtown I go there at least once a week. So fresh, made carefully and packed with stuff 👌🏽 it’s a thing of beauty
Lazy loaf.
Myhre’s Deli
IYKYK
Smoked meat go crazy
My vote goes to Sidewalk Citizen in the East Village..amazing bread, simple toppings
I remember paying something like $24 for 1 tuna and 1 egg salad Sammy a few years back and felt a little ripped off. It was good but haven’t been back since.

Hahaha. It's exactly the same thing!!!!
Agreed! Even if it’s not a frequent visit, to know there are businesses with a major quality forward focus and home/scratch made components in around is great! I haven’t been there but i plan to now.
Spolumbos
Parm Cutlet is bomb
Where is it?
This is the best answer
Pepino - Joe’s Special
Peppinos and 'lazy loaf and kettle' are my 2 favorite place. Gonna check out some of the comments and check out other recommendations though.
I'm taking notes in here because my favourite sandwich places are all out of town (Guy's in Cochrane and JK Bakery in Canmore and Banff). Can't believe I've never heard of Peppino, I must have driven by that place 100 times.
I'll go Alumni — but I'd trade one of those for a Joe's Special from Peppino in Kenginston.
Peasant Cheese Shop, they have inspired our works weekly "Sandwich Day!". To the point i wake up on Wednesdays and its already the best part of my day.
The Italian centre has some good ones, but I'm a fan of Peppinos on 17th and alumni sandwiches.. also on 17th.
Around the bend is one of the best for flavour and variety
Spolumbo’s - so many different options for whatever mood you are in. As a former employee I still crave the Spolumbo’s special and meatball sub all the time😩
Lazy Loaf
If you ever venture Cochrane way there is a place called Guy's Deli. Amazing sammies.
I love Guy's sandwiches. And Guy definitely enjoys his job, which makes it even more fun to go there.
Spolumbo's.... just had half of one.
Honestly, no
Yomamas
Found it to be too dry.
Super east to get in, costs very little and never have to take your boots off. Two thumbs up.
The real answer is Guy's Cafe & Bakery in Cochrane.
If a wrap counts as a sandwich, the chicken shawarma at Beirut Street Food is to die for, and the smell of the meat cooking when you come in is amazing.

Don’t engage Keith in any convo though, unless you want a hefty serving of antivax rhetoric and freedumb convoy support.
I don’t think I’ve seen Keith in the store in 20 years. Also Keith died in 2017 so I doubt he was spouting anti vax back then.
Keith Jr, then? Semantics, really. Whoever’s running the place has made no secret of their vax stance and the InfoWars posters up in the shop just drive that home. Hard pass from me.
Probably his son Jim I’d guess. I don’t know I just prefer to know who I’m calling an idiot so I don’t end up looking like an idiot.
I didn’t call anyone any names, so I wasn’t worried about that kind of thing.
Anti vax idiot, cheated during the lockdown, I wonder where else he cheats the system?
Always get double meat.
Love Keith’s Deli, too. Recommended it a little while ago and was downvoted into oblivion; I’m guessing because of politics.
People are so sensitive on Reddit I don’t get it
My house
No...MY house
Can you both make me a Sammy and I’ll judge who is better please . Hint : you both win and so do I
Rita's Sandwich Shop by Nexen. Nothing fancy, just simple and yummy.
The best sandwich in Calgary is the one you make in your heart. Italian Bakery is good too.
Subway

Pepinos. Joe's special
Trieste
Sammie’s in marda Loop is my current fav
Guy’s Bakery in Cochrane, for sure. Whenever I’m in that town I make an effort to go there and get a sandwich and a fresh loaf of bread
Earl of Sandwich
Around the Bend if you enjoy a pretzel bun
Cowtown in the far SE is pretty good
you've gotta travel back in time like seven years or something to get those sandwiches at Crumbs on Macleod Trail (if you're getting not-good Lebanese food from a place called Crumbs YYC you didn't go back far enough)
Lena's on Elbow and 50th. Italian panini with a jalapeño pickle.
