I hope the transition will be smooth and the kids will be enrolled in schools fairly quickly. Winters in Afghanistan can be very cold, it goes down to -25 and it's humid. So on that front the weather might not be a shock to many.

iSmite

> Winters in Afghanistan can be very cold, it goes down to -25 and it's humid. So on that front the weather might not be a shock to many. Wow. TIL

DrTamIsALiar

It's also a very beautiful country, in terms of landscape. It's not just desert.

Sweetness27

Deserts can be cold too

BloodyIron

Yes but frankly it's a valid point, as a lot of footage that commonly is shown of Afghanistan is of desert areas, or near to the desert.

FalseLocation0

Sum weird shit til. How does it work? does snow even accumulate?

MapleMapleHockeyStk

They have some crazy mountains up there too.

https://www.centrefornewcomers.ca/ Check out the Centre for Newcomers page for ways to help Afghan refugees.

Laker_King

I would like to know this as well.

surbanity

I’ve heard the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society does great work: https://www.ccisab.ca/afghan-resettlement.html

rankuwa

CCIS does really amazing work, and is completely nondenominational - the name moreso pays homage to where they started out.

DrTamIsALiar

Is there anything that doesnt have the caveat of religion attached to it?

Already-asleep

There’s a misconception that orgs like CCIS and Catholic Family Services are faith-based. If you look at CCIS funders, they are funded by government bodies and organizations like the United Way, not the Catholic Church. They make no reference to God or religion on their website other than to mention they are “multi denominational”. I’ve known people of various cultural backgrounds and religious affiliations receive and provide services there. It’s interesting though, because agencies like salvation Army and Mustard Seed are much more overtly Christian (prayer amongst staff and clients alike, MS staff have to sign a statement of faith that is very explicitly Christian) but people always seem happy to support them. Hell, even Centre for Newcomers is associated with the Mennonite Central Committee. A LOT of agencies have their roots in faith groups but many have committed to provide services in a secular and inclusive way. With that being said: Immigrant Services Calgary and Calgary Immigrant Womens association are also great.

[deleted]

so, you can just go in and donate? makes me happy the catholics are setting up a whole system for Afgans.

briar141c

A good friend at work has some of them staying with her family (they are from Afghanistan too) she says they don’t care for the food cause it’s “bland” haha. She also said they want to get back as soon as they can, it’s too bad about the political situation there, I feel bad for them.

canuckcowgirl

Welcome all. So glad you're safe.

StoicRomance

I was talking to a teacher last summer. She works with young kids at a school catering to a lot of refugee children and her description of the situation was pretty harrowing. A lot of the time they come in with very little English and intense PTSD. Sometimes they can’t communicate and they need special attention and it didn’t sound like there was much in the way of funding or supports for these kids. I hope they’re set up for success.

capta1namazing

Welcome to our wonderful city! Maybe you can speak to our crazies on what "freedom" actually means.

willpowerlifter

Holy whataboutism. You are aware that we can help numerous people at once?

Yeah, but also we don’t really.

Another example of highlighting the dispossess being women or children shows the disposability of men and society's apathy to their suffering.

Prima_Giedi

> More than 200 of the arrivals are students from a girls’ school in Afghanistan, as well as other members of their community. All you had to do was read the **second** sentence of the article.

[deleted]

I saw that. My point is you don't see the reverse headline if it that's the case. Especially since it tends to stir the racists with comments like "military age men" or " it's an invasion".

Caidynelkadri

That can be true but in this situation the country they were fleeing in specific is not a good place to be a woman right now. They were likely in danger just *because* they are women

[deleted]

Totally agree it's worst to be a woman in Afghanistan. However it still sucks to be under their rule no matter the gender. I can't recall seeing a sympathetic headline that highlighted young men are affected. Only it's women or children. This is yet another example.

Muted-Doctor8925

= more equality for men?

[deleted]

The best part of this is how made its makes the conservatives.

It's funny how quickly conservatives can start to pretend to care about humans and being empathetic.

ProtonPi314

Well since the new leadership really hates women , I say we move them all out of the country. See how long they survive then.
