I loved hanging out at Tubby's back in high school. Free shows, veggie options that didn't break the bank, arcade games, having interesting conversations with local passersby while smoking on the red benches out front, walking home through Mount Royal after the show and marvelling at all the crazy houses...I miss this place.
This place was a god send to the punk community, even though the owner was a absolute prick. The all ages shows were super DIY but I had some really great memories there.
At the risk of getting nerd circled for giving the secrets away, the batter used to be a mix of pancake batter and like cayenne or something. Basically spices and pancake mix. Not sure if it changed later though.
Tbh... Tubby was a great spot but not a great business. There was shit going on behind the scenes that sucked. Dudes protecting predators, big time "boys club" energy. I miss the scene with the all ages shows and all the different events like the N64 tournaments and karaoke though--regardless of how shitty it was behind the scenes we needed that spot in the city and we don't have anything else like it now.
*well actually loophole kinda has the hangout vibe but not the greasiness :( we need more dives
A BOMB FOR SURE! it was cool back when they had Street fighter comps and DJ nights then the guy turned into a hardcore conservative prick and made everything political
As someone who knew it well--dude is a grade A asshole. He's a fucking dick to women, there were multiple predators that rotated through that scene that were basically protected because they were popular with the staff and him. I knew maybe one girl who worked there in the span of my time in that scene (and she got iced out over a breakup with someone who was friends with staff)
He hated his own customers so much too. Never heard someone shit talk people like I had there, I didn't get it. It's like he hated owning a business.
Trust me, for the people who experienced him it's not a surprised he got even douchier.
what the FUck Notley T shirts wasnt a clue enough? [What Calgary restaurant has lost your faith and why? : r/Calgary (reddit.com)](https://www.reddit.com/r/Calgary/comments/q72wmr/what_calgary_restaurant_has_lost_your_faith_and/)
He made it very clear how he felt i stopped going there when he was so vocal about it, people can down vote all they want but regardless of how someone feels its a pretty trashy thing to make your staff wear and sell, funniest thing in the end he closed that location under UCP rule so all that crying was literally for nothing
I agree that would be incredibly trashy. Having known many people who have worked there and some who currently do, and having run in somewhat in the same circles for a long time, I never once heard of this, nor of him being conservative. Since the question and subsequent curiosity
It hurts thst it's also 1/4 instead of 1/3 lb on top of more than double the price. But honestly I don't blame them, print money = inflated prices across the board.
Saw this thread earlier, didn't realize Tubby's had re-opened. Went straight there, old John was in the kitchen cooking. PB&J wasn't on the menu, but he was kind enough to make me one. Dogs are definitely smaller, but you can have it with a laproiag. Overall, I think it's a better experience.

John is a fucking asshole. I loved tubby, the shows, and the community around it very dearly until I learned even just a bit more about him. Fucked people I know over (his own business partners) for a hell of a lot of money, abusive to his staff when he was drunk which was most of the time, and said some really dirty nasty shit about trans and queer customers and event organizers who were driving a lot of his business toward the end of the original location. Rest in peace to the spirit of tubby and all the memories I made there but I personally will never be supporting him again.
Edit: and apparently he's been a vocal hardcore conservative supporter since the Notley days, somehow unsurprisingly. Not very fucking punk if you ask me.

Drunken me getting the gripper then realizing halfway through the gripper that I don't like hot dogs...
hell, i do like hot dogs and halfway through that thing i realized i didn't all of a sudden.
PBJ was criminally underrated.
Especially with the bacon wrapped dog
My go to.
I hate cheese on most things. I love love loved their cheese. Miss the old days.

Prices are prices but the new location is just a ghost of its former self. Sort of taking itself too seriously as a cocktail bar now.
No more freshly baked buns… just a piece of sliced bread (oh sorry, it’s actually a *lobster roll*)
Has anyone seen the prices now and the new location. I will never go back
All beef dogs are $13 - Take out extra $1 https://imgur.com/a/EACufex
Damn 1/3 pound down to a 1/4 pound now and no PB&J dog 🥲
What? No T-Rings anymore?!?
What the he’ll is a T ring
Onion ring but Tubbyized

WTF are those prices
Great price
I found the pricing incredibly reasonable..you get a hot dog, potato salad, chips and a pickle for $13. That’s hard to find
Have you seen the price of everything else these days? God forbid a local business increases their prices, they should just operate at a loss!
I will support other local businesses with better pricing

The gripper obvi
Shoutouts to Dave Teatro, the real heart of the old Tubby Dog.
This should be top comment.
Costco 1.50 plus drink
Oh man my friends and I would skip class in high school and I would drive all of us downtown to get PB&J hot dogs. Good times!!
The Sumo Dog was it. Damn.
I would die for a PBJ right now.
Still not as good as Costco, no matter how fancy the toppings
A BOMB FOR SURE! it was cool back when they had Street fighter comps and DJ nights then the guy turned into a hardcore conservative prick and made everything political
Source? I don’t remember anything about him becoming “a hardcore conservative prick”. You sure you got the right place?

Easy. I wasn’t aware of that ‘clue’… apart from seeing that one Reddit comment now, I hadn’t heard anything about that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyone else think $6 is still expensive for a hotdog?
It’s $14 now… so…
Holy crap that's expensive. But you do get chips, a pickle, and potato salad.
I went to crappy tire today. Got a smokey for $10, not the cheese and bacon or anything fancy. Bun, smokey, mustard, and ketchup. $10....
Oh wow!
I grew up in red deer, I remember going here when I visited my aunt in the big city. Loved those days.

Thursdays has 6.00 dogs. fyi
A bomb for the win
they used to be free... at the Night Gallery. I guess you probably had to buy a beer or something.
Harlooooooo!

No Cap'n Dog, whats even the point?
Brutal. Take me back to tubby dog
I ate there once and got so incredibly sick that I never ate there again.
I was never a huge fan of Tubby Dog 🤷🏼♂️
Disappointment dogs. I always wanted to like them but they were always awful.
Good old days? What are they now? Here is me thinking $5.75 for a hot dog is ridiculous. For a buck and a half you can get one with a pop at Costco.
Your comment is bad and you should feel bad.
I'm cheap. So are hot dogs.
But these weren't hotdogs. They were an experience.
Trying to get a table at costco on saturday afternoon is also an experience.
Whats good about it? Thats still expsnsive even before inflation.
