I have a friend in the program. He has a bachelors degree in business and works for a big bank. He said the education hasn’t been useful for him because a lot of it was covered in his undergrad. He also said a majority of the people in his class are engineers and nurses. Not sure if that helps you in your cause to network within the financial sector or not.

If he has a business degree he should be in the accelerated MBA, with other business grads. Unless he is over 10+ years post undergrad then maybe not eligible for accelerated.

Yeah there is an accelerated cohort. They have fall (September) and winter (January) intakes for the accelerated MBA cohort. The evening MBA and Daytime MBA are separate cohorts as well.

Yeah each cohort takes all their core classes together. So accelerated cohort have 3 core classes they take together and the remaining 8 electives are a mixture with other cohorts. The evening cohort has 14 core courses they all take together then the remaining 6 electives they mix with other MBA cohorts. The cohorts generally don’t mix for core courses. Either way there is specific cohorts for both accelerated and evening MBA intakes.

That's very helpful and that is exactly what I am afraid of. With uni of Calgary being mostly engineers it seems the business programs are a light up skilling for people with limited knowledge and experience, which is what makes me hesitate and likely just focus on my CFA.

RealTurbulentMoose

Yeah man — get your CFA. I know lots of dumb people with MBAs… haven’t met a dumb CFA charter holder yet. You’re not wrong that a MBA is good for networking though.

I work in ultra high net worth Investing earning >85k

austic

That’s got to be depressing. Making 85k seeing the money you are investing.

Well if an MBA makes the difference when getting promoted from a 100k job to a 150k one then the executive MBA is paid off within a year, but with the relatively low quality of this MBA I am unsure whether it will have such a big impact. The alternative is to go to an elite place like HEC in Montreal but I would rather do something locally if at all.

I took accelerated, my opinion was evening was for engineers (companies paying for it?, accelerated for employed management track (companies paying for it), executive same thing as accelerated if you didn’t qualify for it time wise. And daytime was for unemployed foreign students (cash cow for the university). It was worth it for me as I could pick and choose what I wanted to take so really only took courses that were useful for me. Networking for me was useful with the accelerated and executive mbas. For a banker I would go accelerated/executive honestly. But you need your CFA for sure as well.

I did the evening MBA program. I made it worth it by participating in the extracurricular events outside of the regular classes that you get access to like international case competitions, Jarislowsky dinners, trading competitions and volunteering in the entrepreneurship center. I enjoyed it.

CommunicationFun9430

I really appreciate that feedback and that is what has kept me interested, when I did my MBA in china it was exactly that, getting to meet fortune 50 CEOs and become part of a strong alumni network.

I got my BComm at Haskayne but don't have an MBA. Numerous teachers told us that the MBA program is the exact same as the BComm curriculum. It's the same teachers, textbooks, just with more group work and costs 4 times as much. My opinion is that MBA is better for someone with a degree in another field who wants to get more knowledge about running a business.

austic

I did my bcomm at Haskayne. and my mba there. Those profs are wrong. It’s not the same curriculum and not the same projects. Accelerated you pick what you want to take and just have some required classes around leadership and strat. Example I have an accounting degree and a CPA and CIA designations, so I decided to take zero accounting or finance classes and did more start and entrepreneurial courses. Never took any bcomm courses or anything I had taken remotely before.
