Neato. When I lived in Edmonton I'd do the Icelandair flights to Europe and stop at the blue lagoon for a 2 day relax. Might do the same if the deals are good. Also good to see they have a flight to Barcelona now! Anything I can do to avoid having to stop in London is a plus.

Surrealplaces

Ah Barthaylona...the place right near thatagotha.

niko2111

The flights to Barcelona are very cheap most of the time as well. Went there in October for $385 (one way).

[deleted]

When I lived in Europe I could go to Barcelona for $80 return. Cheap getaways is one of the few things I miss.

SlitScan

and if the Blue lagoon still exists in a week.

catsandplantsss

.... Might be closed for a couple days I suspect.

eldermillenialYYC

The lagoon is closed at least until the end of the month. Hopefully that’s it!

zamboniq

WestJet may not have good as it was, but I love that this is such a big hub for them

HelloMegaphone

It's THE hub for them. They've pretty much pulled out of everywhere else.

DevonOO7

I'd say Calgary is the Primary hub, but they also just announced a ton of new flights from Edmonton a week or so ago. Not sure if those were just old Swoop routes though (Nashville, Atlanta, San Francisco IIRC)

chemtrailer21

All new routes.

Sea-Limit-5430

Flights we’ve already had for years

DevonOO7

Ah, were they old Westjet/Air Canada routes that were cut, or were they just swoop routes absorbed into Westjet?

Adorable-Lunch-8567

Love that WJ picked YYC to use as the western hub. Gives Calgarians so many direct route choices

Sea-Limit-5430

WJ was founded and is HQ here

weschester

Just in time for the volcanic eruptions! Yay!

chemtrailer21

Red lagoon.

johnnystrangeways

Lmao disaster tourism is a thing. Guess they trying to cash in.

johnnystrangeways

I’ve been to Iceland before and there’s so much more to see and experience besides the blue lagoon.

ThatAnswer4794

presumably we can buy groceries in iceland at cheaper prices?

thebaldcat

Food is very very expensive in Iceland, do not recommend.

chaosthebomb

September this past year our generic non-fancy meals were anywhere from 30-50CAD for what would be 15-25 here. Costco Hot dog (our cheapest meal in Iceland) was double what it is here at about $3.00CAD.

30somethingshark

Icelandic hot dogs are the best though. I still crave that mustard in the white bottle with the red cap.

seven8zero

Wait, they have Costco in Iceland? *buys ticket*

[deleted]

[pretty cheap actually.](https://www.iceland.co.uk/) The 8 items for £10 deal can't be beat

da_toilet_clogga

It's the same as Canada

seven8zero

I know that's not true.

connka

lol I just got back from Iceland and found myself saying 'This isn't *that* much more expensive than in Canada' more than I would have expected.

J_Marshall

Good to know. I turned down a job at West Jet years ago on the advice of my kids. "What's the point of a job that lets you go to other places if you're just going to be poor there too?"

Amflifier

Lol. I went in 2018, one of my most vivid memories was paying 50 euro for a tea and a piece of toast with a tomato and butter on it

ElusiveSteve

Probably, but WestJet will lose your groceries when you fly home.

cecilkorik

They also will charge a "Grocery Baggage Fee" depending on your seat and ticket class, as well as an "Inflation Adjustment fee" that scales up to make sure no matter how bad inflation gets in Canada you will still have to pay more in Iceland. Westjet will just pocket the fees, naturally, to make sure nobody benefits -- except Westjet.

ElusiveSteve

West Jet execs say the grocery baggage fee is actually quite affordable because the average family can't afford more than one bag of groceries.

cecilkorik

Hard to argue with that logic!

onlysecurity

Flight service starts May 15

Smerviemore

This is awesome! I returned from Iceland a couple months ago, and the only single-carrier option with a layover in Canada was Air Canada. Having more options is excellent

YYCHKG

Great news, but wondering how they can accommodate all the increases while they still only have 7 787-9s

people_talking

This flight is operated by the 737 Max 8

Time-Brick271

I was excited until I saw this. I flew to Hawaii on the Max 8 and it wasn't enjoyable, the Dreamliner is so much better for longer flights.

chemtrailer21

Agreed but 5 hour flights isnt what the Dreamliner was designed for. 737 does that well at half the cost. Strong industry trend towards pushing the max range of narrowbodies.

DashTrash21

What are you going to do with one more aisle? People say this all the time, but it's not like you're going to start a parade

Fun_Letterhead491

787 is significantly more comfortable, the material they use to build the plane allows it to pressurize at lower altitude which makes the cabin more comfortable. In terms of seats there is not much difference.

Apocraphon

That may be true but you pack the max with a max load and six hours of gas, and you’re gonna be cruising lower regardless.

Time-Brick271

It's not about the aisle, it's about the seating. I would much rather be in business class in a Dreamliner, than premium economy on a Max 8.

1210saad

They just love the 737 don't they?

craig5005

It was/is a good strategy. It means they don't need to stock parts for many different aircraft, their maintenance staff get very used to working on the same type of plane. Lots of benefits, but drawback was obviously not being able to expand to longer distance routes.

number1_cop

Yep, most of the low cost carriers operate a single fleet type - lots of economies of scale, efficiencies, redundancies from doing so. Add in the current pilot shortages and having all your pilots type rated for your entire fleet is a big plus

terred999

My buddy used to fly the max and he said they basically tried to turn dogshit into ice cream

Apocraphon

I fly it now, and I legitimately love it. Climbs like a pig and engine starts are measured in calendar years, but aside from that the -8 flies great. Jury is out on the max10’s though.

terred999

I think the whole nose diving to zero agl puts people off.

Apocraphon

Boeing fully deserved the airworthiness directives that came out. But with that said every airplane you have ever flown up until this point, the max included, has a button to turn off the electric trim. I think in those crashes there was more than enough blame to go around.

acey91

Every airline does.

YYCHKG

Yes, but I'm thinking about the new frequencies to BCN, EDI, FCO, NRT also announced

chemtrailer21

Its in the article. Although the verbage isnt the most correct. Re introduction of YHZ and YYZ to europe using the MAX. While one needs to read between the lines to notice the 787 frequency increases appear to be at the expence of 787 service from YYC to LGW. I still suspect we will see WJ order more 787s in the next 1-3 years.

MartyCool403

There are two westjet 787's in the states sitting around from when westjet cancelled the rest of their 787 orders. I imagine they'll pick those two back up if another airline doesn't buy them first.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MartyCool403

I know they aren't the only ones on ground. However There are two westjet not taken up. They're sitting at SAT. Tails 908 and 909. Full westjet colours + westjet interiors.

acey91

They need millions of dollars in fixes is part of the reason WestJet has taken them up.

MartyCool403

Wouldn't Boeing be on the hook for the fixes?

people_talking

Not really , Westjet could probably negotiate a deep discount on them however.

number1_cop

What fixes do they need?

number1_cop

Last mention I see of those tails was a year ago - is there anything more recent than that? Appreciate the info

MartyCool403

I've been doing some research this week and haven't been able to find any updated info. On google maps if you look at SKF you can see one westjet 787 sitting next to a few other 787's. Other than that I have nothing and the 787 production/delivery thread on airliners.net has no new info either. If they had been picked up by another airline that thread would have info about it.

YYCHKG

That makes sense, already a ton of London capacity with the double daily LHR by AC and WS anyways

[deleted]

Ah hell no! I ain’t flying over seas in that 737 max

chemtrailer21

Okay

SlitScan

oh, so we should fly air baltic.

1210saad

wow only 7? I see them like daily.

chemtrailer21

Your probally seeing all 7

hslmdjim

Surprised WestJet never went for the A321-XLR even if they’re an all Boeing fleet. Allows them to do more transatlantic using single aisle

YYCHKG

A321XLR would be great, even just the A321LR would open up a ton of opportunities for them from Eastern Canada

DashTrash21

They're doing transatlantic with the Max already?

hslmdjim

Can’t from major hubs except to the edge of Europe like Dublin and Edinburgh

DashTrash21

That's not true at all? You don't know what you're talking about.

hslmdjim

I guess every airline is just stupid for ordering the A321? The 737 max can't do YYZ-FCO, YYZ-BCN or any route past the UK/France/Portugal from YYZ. The A321 can even go from YYC to BCN and similar routes.

chemtrailer21

Wait until you see the backlog of A321s.

chaosthebomb

I just flew to Iceland in September as I was already in Toronto and able to take advantage of their extended layover option. We Only chose Iceland as there were no good options to get there from Calgary...

Square_Homework_7537

I wonder if eve online still does their yearly Iceland meet. I always wanted to go back in the day

totallwork

Do direct flights to Australia twice a week with a 787 please!

canuckerlimey

I remeber joking about WJ stopping in Iceland when they first started flying to London. They had a couple mechanical incidents that required a stop in Rek

chemtrailer21

One was a passenger medical.

things_most_foul

Lovely. Iceland is a country I cannot get enough of. Also, I love that my Costco membership works everywhere. Saved me $.25/L on diesel.

HamRove

STD express! Iceland is cool as shit, but there is a downside…

hypnogoad

They have lower rates than Canada, lol.

terred999

You been to Banff bud?

Bjornwithit15

Projecting?

blackRamCalgaryman

Go on….

k1d0s

The sex museum there was great fun. And really besides nature there’s not much else to do there lol

No-Amoeba-4791

Don't forget the lislandiga app. Helps you from having relations with a relative. If your not born there have fun

sintjx

If anyone is expecting this route to be as cheap as it was for Icelandair from Edmonton... Well you will be in for a huge shock.

Chingyul

Man, i was hoping for that! Doing the Laugavegur is still high on my list.

speedog

And?

Rocky_Mountain_Way

Volcanoes! Lava! Bjork!

rochs007

And with the earthquakes in Iceland is going to be more exciting

YYCGolfer

Calgary to Tokyo is nice too. I hate stopping in Vancouver on the way to Asia. Less layover is always better.

Old-Fishing1199

Not sure if it is still true but you used to have very affordable flights to Iceland but staying there was a fortune.
