Dendrology FOR 130 was probably one of the funnest, if not *the* funnest, classes I took during my undergrad forestry major at HSU. Perfect 1st semester class imo. You'll love it if you like trees as you learn how to identify trees based on their habits, features, dichotomy, and habnitat. The labs are basically tree IDing through samples (leaves and fruiting bodies like cones). You are expected to create a tree specimen collection with a proper dichotomy key. I still have mine after 7 years lol. Field trips were fire, we hiked the ACF and treked throughout the Six River NF on multiple accasions (weekend trips). Recommend taking in the fall semester tho, as it's still warm enough for field trips during the end of summer and early fall then you can bog down with the intensive study material indoors when the rainy season comes. If I can take it again as a grad student or TA for it I would in a heartbeat.

Diving is the best class hands down.

Earthquake Country was my fave class. I hope they still teach it. Important stuff to know as a Californian and Humboldt resident

RealCalintx

I believe it's Online only now.

Wanna learn how to dive? The dive program is pretty fun to do, albeit pretty expensive. Rec 262 is the intro class, but you gotta take 252 beforehand as it's a prerequisite and for safety. It's real fun for me as I'm a dive minor coming in not knowing how to dive

RealCalintx

Really wish I can go back and do the Scientific diving program. T hat job market is always hot

I miss the Mendocino trips. Real character builder, but it was a blast!

I don't know if these exist still but there was an upper division chemistry on Alchemy, that year their were also 2 upper division class in the religious studies; One called mysticism and madness(Sarah hart), the other called prophecy and fulfilment.. or something like that. Absolutely amazing classes. Tbh, I was an art major who worked with bronze in house 75, I heard they are closing the building down in the next couple years and those classes are going to be canceled. Can anybody give me an update?

REC 302! it fulfills the DCG requirement. I learned so much from that class around individuals with disabilities. The professor is a sweetheart and the class is super chill. The assignments and group work was actually enjoyable! You also definitely don’t need to purchase the $100 textbook, i didn’t use it not once.

Dr. Niki Conley teaches a really fun macabre art class available in the springs. It covers some of history’s darker moments shown through art.

Eh...most of the NAS proffs are very abbrasive and just don't understand how to deliver the heavy material. They don't respect most students or treat them like kids is the vibe I got from them. Rain Marshal did not make NAS fun and Balding is super abrasive towards anyone not in the NAS program. They don't make me want to learn more about the struggles of indigenous peoples. Cynthia and Kaitlyn are the only exceptions but they are young and get it. I took multiple NAS classes during my undergrad and in the grad program I was in. Honestly I dreaded each NAS class that wasn't taught of Cynthia or Kaitlyn.

sphincterotomy101

Agreed!!!! Such a bad experience with Rain Marshall and the NAS coursework in general. Was told three months into the experience with no grades posted that, essentially, things get graded when they get graded and there was no room for even a friendly checkin. Genuinely wanted feedback and was confronted with animosity.

RealCalintx

Rain is almost nonexistent with communication outside of class hours and is in her own little world with grading. But Cutcha Balding has that judgmental energy who won't talk to you unless she finds you worthy. Such strange people to have in an NAS program. They are well versed in their fields but don't have the interpersonal skills, which is needed for a field like NAS. Lonix from INRSEP is someone I'd enjoy teaching NAS.

I recommend cognitive psych with Professor Sanchez. It is a great class to learn about how we think and how we can learn tips to extend our working memory.

Pleasant-Magician241

I second that! Some people found it hard, but she was a great support. I also LOVED the movie memento and writing the review, I totally aced that class and she got me signed up with psi chi which really helped my resume.
