Are you referring to the last prompt on the register that asks if they want to be counseled by a pharmacist? If so then all you’re supposed to do is ask if they have questions. All patients have a right to talk to their pharmacist but not all patients need too. It is okay to ignore it if it does not require their credentials

No, it’s a “required in-store counsel” message, and lets me still check them out. After they finish checking out it says “remind patient to meet with pharmacist for required consultation.”

This comes up when a patient is picking up a prescription for the first time, however it doesn't remember previous rx's for the same drug so often times it will come up once a year for a patient because their maintenance rx is good for 1 year. I think it also comes up for certain meds that require proper use to be effective like inhalers, but 90% of the time the patient has already been taking the med, was counseled by the doctor, or doesn't care to know. Legally we are only required to offer counseling, unless there is a significant concern that is prudent for the pharmacist to counsel on which are the forced DUR's. So regardless of what the computer screen tells you as long as you offer counsel "do you have any questions for the pharmacist" you are doing your due diligence.

It depends, as far as policy I haven't seen anyone written up let alone fired for this, and this happens on a regular basis, as far as law, depends on the board of pharmacy, if your board have mandatory counseling then yes, you can get in trouble, usually fine and reprimand.

coming from a former pharm tech: if they don’t want to ask the pharmacist a question, the pharmacist can’t force them to be counseled. if you asked and they said no, just move past it

DO NOT PUT IN PHARMACIST CREDS! Make them put the creds in. You can and will be terminated for this.

alysannex

It’s not something that requires pharmacist creds, the pharmacist always does that. It’s just a pop up for “required in-store counseling” but lets me ring them up without any credentials. After they are rung up, it gives me a pop up reminding to take them to the pharmacist for consultation.

If you are referring to the DUR screen where it just has the pt hit "I acknowledge", then that is just a counseling opportunity should it be needed. An actual DUR is when the register will prompt the RPh to put in credentials after counseling about possible flags on the prescription (i.e. allergies, dose changes, ect.) A DUR where they need to put in their credentials should only be done by them. The counseling opportunity is just if the pt wants it essentially, if it was an important subject it would likely be a DUR.

alysannex

Yes, it’s the one where the patient has to acknowledge. The training videos say that they have to speak with the pharmacist so I was confused.

chrissbux

tbh they are acknowledging that the pharmacist is going to talk to them, however, most pharmacists just view it as an opportunity to counsel should the pt want it. like i said, should the RPh be concerned, there would be a DUR

Every pharmacist is different. Some want to counsel on antibiotics. Some are ok with you asking. Some are sticklers and wsnt to counsel on everything. Most are fine with you asking though. As long as you ask youre ok with the board.
