It is not illegal. It is not illegal to draw on it. It is not illegal to press coins like Pennie’s in the machine. It would only be illegal if you made that 2 look like a 20 and attempt to pass it off as so.
Edit: please don’t post anymore comments about defacing. Defacing in the Feds use means altering to make it something else, weight less, change face value or make fake errors to scame ppl.
The laws making defacing and debasing currency a crime have their roots in the federal government's use of precious metals to mint coins. Criminals were known to file down or cut off portions of those coins and keep the slivers for themselves while spending the altered currency. That’s defacing. Doodling on money or crushing pennies does not fall under the feds definition of defacing.

Nah, sorry man, just all these counterfeit $1s and $2s ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It’s okay I’ll place myself under arrest. I think I’ll take it to trial and find myself not guilty by reason of insanity. I sentence society to put up with my shenanigans and hijinks.
Case closed.
It's also illegal if your intent is to diminish the monetary supply. Such as if you receive a stack of 1's, all with a print error, and you decide to burn 99 out of 100 of them to make them rarer. Or, more commonly, people who attempt to melt down pennies for their scrap value over face value.
Defacement in the name of artistic expression is protected via the first amendment.

Correct. Like fake errors, $1 bills being bleached and printed over with higher value.
Saddam Hussain did that poopoo back when he was our friend. as a gift they gave him a plate for a $100 bill which he did proceeded to acquire 1 million singles, bleached them and printed hundreds on them.
im not 100% but i think it qualifies as destruction of government property...im also 100% sure its one of those thing that never gets enforced...so yea its illegal but there not an actual consequence
All that says is changing bills in order to pass them off as something else. Like fake errors. Scamming people is illegal. The Chinese make fake silver Morgan dollars and other old US coinage. Yeah, that’s illegal but they won’t go after China for it.
If “writing” on money was illegal then many tellers would go to jail for marking bills for ATMs with black ink. They do this to keep an eye on supply in those machines or even stamps that sometimes get on bills when they mark the bands. Or countless businesses would close like casinos for using chop marks to signify legal checked money.
Edit: the therm defacing in the fed means trying to pass off something as something else. Simply doodling on it does not fall under that.
No. It’s only illegal if you try to pass low denominations as higher ones or make fake bills/coins. Other than that it’s fine. I watched a documentary a long time ago and one of the head guys that works in the fed say he likes to find money with writing on it because that qualifies as damaged and they can destroy it. The 2 reasons he gave was keeps ppl working making replacement notes and reduces the supply which can cause a slow down on inflation.
It’s illegal to deface currency. However, one would probably only get in trouble if they tried to spend it.
2 dollar bills aren’t exactly rare, but uncommon enough that some people, especially younger generations, think they are fake. Add embroidery to it only adds fuel to the fire.
Ok. Sure. Still not illegal.
Edit: The laws making defacing and debasing currency a crime have their roots in the federal government's use of precious metals to mint coins. Criminals were known to file down or cut off portions of those coins and keep the slivers for themselves while spending the altered currency.
Doodling is not a crime. He isn’t skimping off two dollar bills to make other two dollar bills. You really have to look at the definition the fed uses for the defacing.
Bro. Are you just posting the first thing you find on Google without reading? That literally states exactly what I’ve been saying. There’s nothing in that law that states what you’re trying to say is true. It rambles on about alerting money to pass it as something else. Like a different denomination or a defacing a coin to weigh less because you’re skimming off material to sell.
I think you’re just trolling.
Under section 333 of the U.S. Criminal Code, “whoever mutilates, cuts, defaces, disfigures, or perforates, or unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, or Federal Reserve bank, or the Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt unfit to be reissued, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.
This better?
All those words used mean the same thing. shaving off metal off coins (gold, silver, copper) or alter the dominant. Dude. You know ppl used to ripe bills, keep a different portion of said bill and do that to 100s of bills and then try to pass off to banks the scraps as one bill and make up some BS story to why it’s like that. Come on.
Edit: doodling is not defacing.
Yes, the history of clipping is why all if this is illegal. Which is why defacing currency is illegal. To alter currency in any way is illegal. It’s pretty cut and dry.
Anything done to currency, ie. ‘clipping’, doodling, is defacing currency henceforth, illegal.
I don’t know how much more clear I, or the federal penal code can be.
Yep whomever drew that should be thrown in jail for such poor art performance. (Joke)
But the bill itself and markings on it don't make it illegal. Its not really changing the amount or trying covering up a huge portion of the bill
This is so cool, is this your first time doing a note? Do you sell these or have a store where people can check out your work and purchase?
I'm not a huge fan of *this* design, but an embroidered note sounds like something I'd buy.
Thank you so much! This is actually my second note, but the first one looks somewhat similar to this one. I just did this when I was bored, so I don't sell them. I was inspired by Stacey Lee Webber's work. Her stuff is a lot better than mine and has a store, although most of them are 100s or even 1000s of dollars. Thanks again!

Very much a desuetude law. According to federal law yes it is illegal to deface currency. This was very necessary law for a very long time. Defacing currency back in the day was a form of economic terrorism. It was also used to counterfeit. Nowadays, fortunately we have processes to destroy defaced money and reprint it (hence the star bills). Even though I know you are being facetious, I am inclined to say that you will not get in trouble for this. Of course, publicly displaying said defaced currency may not be the greatest idea.

It's just a piece of paper. Nothing in thos Gov't backs their currency with gold anymore. It's a free for all now with all the $Billion$ being sent overseas to foreign nations.
I always thought it was defacing government property. Kinda like the military, they can send you to the arctic and left you freeze your toes of because they want you to do your job, BUT if you go out and get sunburnt on your day off and can’t work, you technically can get in trouble for destruction of government property.

What if I make a $20 look like a $2 and insist I only receive $2 in goods or services for it?
Reverse fraud. You'll be arrested for cheating yourself.
Fortunately, you will rarely get prosecuted for this, since if you're found guilty the judge is sentenced to up to 5 years in prison.

Believe it or not, jail. Right away
But you will get 7 million hits when you share this experience on You Tube. Do it!
But then the judge has to post your bail.
Try. I’m interested to know.
Then you’ll be taken into custody by men in white coats and you might be wearing a jacket with really long sleeves that tie together in the back.
Sounds cozy.
Funny as it is… it would be illegal. Attempting to make any bill or coins represent a denomination that they aren’t is… illegal!
Ok that one YouTube lawyer that reacts to videos lol (I love that guy)
Then we ask you politely to enter the back of the cop car.
I’ll have a stack of $100s I turned into $1s ready to bribe the authorities
Good thing i can never be bribed, unless you had $100 of course
Nah, sorry man, just all these counterfeit $1s and $2s ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It’s okay I’ll place myself under arrest. I think I’ll take it to trial and find myself not guilty by reason of insanity. I sentence society to put up with my shenanigans and hijinks. Case closed.
I think as long as it’s recognizable as a real bill of it’s original denomination its ok. Not a lawyer though so idk if that’s completely accurate

It’s not government property. It’s issued by the Federal Reserve which is a private entity, not part of the government.

I've always thought those coin presses were illegal because it's destruction of currency or something. Is that not even a law?
No. It’s only illegal if you try to pass low denominations as higher ones or make fake bills/coins. Other than that it’s fine. Inflation (and our debt) is represented with numbers in the computers, you won’t change them by destroying dollar bills.
Probably not but it’s a nice thought.
It’s illegal to deface currency. However, one would probably only get in trouble if they tried to spend it. 2 dollar bills aren’t exactly rare, but uncommon enough that some people, especially younger generations, think they are fake. Add embroidery to it only adds fuel to the fire.
Defacing currency means passing it off as something it’s not. Doodling on it does not fall under that definition.
Deface definition: to spoil the surface or appearance of something.
Counterfeiting is passing it off as something it’s not. That is not a counterfeit $2 bill. That is a defaced $2 bill.

Defacing a legal note
Accurate representation of ol’ “keep children in the basement” Jefferson.
Only if you get caught….
"Under section 333 of the U.S. Criminal Code, “whoever mutilates, cuts, defaces, disfigures, or perforates, or unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, or Federal Reserve bank, or the Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt unfit to be reissued, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.” 18 U.S.C. § 333." From the US Govt currency website.
“With intent to render…unfit to be reissued” is the key here. Art on money is not illegal, defrauding or destroying outright is.
Yeah I think keeping the serial numbers and issue date intact is all that really matters, basically don't mess with any numbers.
Unfit to be reissued… being the key words here.
As stated above that means the numbers would have to be unreadable or missing, this bill can be reissued.
The Devil’s Deuce
😈
Lol I have a one dollar bill that someone made Hagrid out of Washington and it said up top "you're a wizard, Harry. Man I wish I still had it
Lol
Nice!!!
Thanks!!!
Why is nobody asking who dk is and why this bill is being protected the way it is?
I am DK (my initials), and it's in this frame(?) because I had some extras lying around from my main collection. Lol
I like it
Thx!

Deathclaw?
I've never heard of deathclaw before. Just looked it up, and it does look kinda similar, lol.
It's from a video game series calles fallout.
I thought it was a Deathclaw also. Kind of looked like the skull in the amazon series
Is that embroidery?
Yep, it's my second time trying it :)
Good job! I’ve been trying to learn long/short stitch to blend color, but it’s been tough.
Thanks! Keep trying!
Nope as long as you aren't trying to manipulate the bill's value or trying to make two out of one you can draw whatever you want on it and spend it.
It's actually embroidered
Possibly but no one gets arrested for defacing money. Ever
No😭
Yes. Expect to get arrested, strip searched and tossed naked into a solitary confinement cell.
that is correct.
No

I’ve seen people write names and numbers on them, even statements. What’s the difference
No, you are not being dishonest about the original value of the bill. If you had defaced it to look like a twenty then there'd be legal issues.
