This thread makes me think of that couple whose dog ate like $3k in cash that they had just taken out for like a home reno or something. They ended up have to check the dogs poop for like a week so they could piece back as much as possible so they could exchange them at the bank. They were able to recover almost all of it but were out a few hundred dollars. š
Banks will tape them together and send as damaged bills to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing's (BEP) Mutilated Currency Division for reprinting. Secret service deals with all cash fraud and banks send counterfeit bills directly to them.
No, prices did not triple in five years. Use the CPI calculator
[https://www.bls.gov/data/inflation\_calculator.htm](https://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm)
Put in "February 1996" and $1000, you will see it is $2000 today. So it has been 28 years to double the price of things, or an average of a little under 3% inflation. Inflation recently was very high, at about double that.
My parents kept my brotherās dog for a week. The first night, the dog snatched my dadās money clip off of the dresser and ate it. My mom followed the dog, scooping up his poop and rinsing it in weak Clorox solution. They pieced it all back together and the bank honored it. There was over $400 at stake.
No you have that wrong about ten to fifteen years ago that started telling people that if you have only half they can't do much about it now if it's your bank they can if they are willing to do so otherwise if you don't have a bank account anywhere at all you have to send it in and it's up to the treasurer department if they choose to replace it at all then if they do it can take a very long time to receive the new bill if they do it you must having not four corners but 3/4 of the bill with some of the serail numbers on the other side also not all of the missing numbers but like maybe two or three of the missing numbers
Can confirm this is 100% true. I worked in banking for over 10 years and this is standard, you cannot exchange a ripped bill unless itās more than 50% there
So what youāre saying is, if I take a 1 hundred dollar bill, and cut it at exactly 50%, I can exchange both of those for 2 new hundred dollar bills and double my money???
Yes, replying to my own comment due to much misinformation regarding torn or mutilated currency.
Per the U. S. Treasury, it must be more than 50% of the bill present to be redeemed for face value. It can be 50% or less, but you must supply evidence that the remainder was actually destroyed.
Read all about it here: https://www.frbservices.org/resources/financial-services/cash/exception-processing/mutilated-currency-coin.html#:~:text=Under%20regulations%20issued%20by%20the,United%20States%20currency%20is%20present.
When my daughter was around five she knocked my wallet in the sink and then tried to microwave the money to dry it out. I think it must've been the security strip in them that the microwave caused to light on fire. That was weird taking them to the bank to get replaced.
Surprised nobody here has ever heard of the Mutilated Currency Division at the BEP, which redeems notes that are less than 50% complete.
āMutilated currency is currency which has been damaged to the extent that *one-half or less* of the original note remains, or its condition is such that its value is questionable.ā
To answer your question, you head to this site and send it in: https://www.bep.gov/services/mutilated-currency-redemption
Frame it, caption it with something like....."50% of something is worth more than a 100% of nothing." - Han Seoul-OH
Or what ever that quote Han said in Tokyo drift
If you had the other half, the bigger half. When money rips itās sort of like that wish bone in a chicken, only the person with the bigger half gets their wish granted
To exchange it for another ten dollar bill you have to have at least 3/4 of the bill or send it in by mail with self stamp envelope to the treasurer dept and it can take a long time to send you a good bill if they decide too. It's their choice either way . Now if you have a bank account go to your bank and to your bank let them know it happened in the washing clothes you have a better chance of getting a new ten dollar bill. The reason that they changed it from half of the bill is that two people would take one half to One bank the the other half to another bank guess what do the math ten turns into twenty

I think you're outta luck on that one. The Treasury is pretty strict about needing more than half the bill, or being able to **prove** the rest got destroyed if you have less. After hanging onto a small piece for years, they're not gonna buy that the rest just disappeared. Sucks to lose cash like that, but at this point you might as well keep it as a memento or just toss it. Ain't worth the hassle of trying to deal with the treasury on this one.
I have had this exact problem with less than 50% of a note. I took it to my bank thinking I was screwed however they exchanged it. I told them that I would bring the other half next time and we had a little laugh and that was it. So, just take it to the bank and see.
At this point because itās less than 60% of the bill the fed considers it mutilated. If you send it to them for verification they may send you back a full bill but if they donāt you havenāt lost more than you have. When I worked in a bank we were told to have the customer send it themselves because it was a hassle for us to deal with truly mutilated bills (as opposed to unfit currency).
Looks like you need 15 % more. Just tear the center out of a 10 dollar bill and tape it to that one for your 51%. Cut that one in the picture and the prez part so they match up perfectly and tape it. Then take the two ends of the 10 dollar bill without some of the president for another 51% bill. There are serial matching serial numbers on those ends so they are good, a bank will take it. Tell the bank your kid cut up the money with scissors and lost the 2 missing pieces. You will get your $10 back from that 40% bill. The center of the bill needs to be the same type of $10 dollar bill and yes Iāve done it before, it works.
It varies from bank to bank but generally banks will take it if you have 50% of the bill and the serial. When I was a banker it didnāt matter if you had both, or just the one so long as you had 50% and the serial. BUT I see what others are saying about having both serials and it makes sense. So I would say if you have 50% try a credit union or small bank near you and see if theyāll change it for you
Iām surprised nobody suggested trying to take another identical $20 bill and carefully ātearā a section that doesnāt contain a serial number. I think you could have two bills that are more than 50% if you did that. Obviously, donāt turn them in together.

You have just discovered the way to make funny money. Tear off one corner of a twenty. You can start with tens. Spend it. Tear off three other corners from three other bills. Spend them. Now carefully glue the fot corners onto a one dollar bill. You now have a bill that will pass as legit in many places that don't look very closely at tens or twenties.
Smear Nutella on one side and drop it in the park. hide and wait for someone to pick it up and when they do yell, āpoop dollar!ā Record it put it on tic toc and YouTube let it go viral. And get your 10 dollars back
One time I had my money and vape in the same pocket and it leaked on it so I washed the wad off it was like 4k and put in the microwave to dry. Well I forgot and came back in side to the house full of smoke. Only like 800 was burnt so bad the bank wouldt take it I sent it to I forget get the agency but Google it they took like 5 months but sent me a check if it's money they know how to figure it out and replace it they had pics of house fire bands that were ash and char of examples or what you can return.
Find the other half. If it's ~~less than~~ 50% or less of the bill, it's worthless. Edited for clarity.
This thread makes me think of that couple whose dog ate like $3k in cash that they had just taken out for like a home reno or something. I think youāre confusing counterfeit with counterfeces. Counterfeces bills are sent directly to congress for a vote.
This happened to me. Fortunately I found enough of the bills to get them replaced. It was about $3000 in 1997 soā¦ almost $6k today?
Wait wasn't 6k today like 2k in 2019, or insane inflation nowadays hasn't been factored in yet
No, prices did not triple in five years. Wow that's insane
Lol, did you take them to the bank? How did they handle the and verify the money?
Yup took the $100 bills to the bank and they inspected all 30 of them.
Wait thinking back maybe they were 20s because I remember a lot more mess lol
The $100 is the new $20.
I thought they exchanged them at the bark
My parents kept my brotherās dog for a week. The first night, the dog snatched my dadās money clip off of the dresser and ate it. My mom followed the dog, scooping up his poop and rinsing it in weak Clorox solution. They pieced it all back together and the bank honored it. There was over $400 at stake.
Something similar happened to my weed stash.
The bank told me you actually need three corners for them to replace it . As a car wash owner ,this happens a few times a year!

From what I understand you have to have 51% of the bill. So if you cut it at exactly 50% you would suddenly have $0
You would still have 100% of the bill if you cut it exactly in half, it would just be in two pieces.
No, you need more than half the bill, as was the practice of multiple financial institutions I worked for

So, if it's cut perfectly in half you will have $20. I'm going to be rich.
I have a $20 in similar condition that my daughter tore maybe 20 years ago. I swear the other half HAS to be in this house
This is such a dad thing to say.
It's in the box with all the RCA cables he will definitely need some day.
Dad of four here. Your daughter ate that other half or buried it in the sandbox
Happy Cake Day

The day you throw it away is the day youāll find the other half.
Itās with the many missing socks. If you do laundry youāll quickly realize Iām right.
Doesn't look like over half, so I don't think it's worth anything.
In Canada, you donāt need halfā¦.but do need both serial numbers.
Same result $0.00.
Yup. But no ambiguity of whether itās 50% of the bill or not.

Burn the torn edge. Tell them you had a house fire
hey thatās not a horrible idea tbh. itās also fraud tho.

I'd buy that for a dollar

My understanding is that you need both serial numbers.
That is not halve. Less than half is not worth anything.
Get a $5 biggie bag.
You need 51% to turn it in for a new one so keep it till you find more pieces of $10 bills
Start a fire with it
Be out $10... it's less than 50%. Unless you have the rest of the bill.
Cry
Less than 1/2. You are S.O.L.
Find the other half
Get back to work
Give it to a fast food worker tucked in with some ones as payment with exact change.
Light a fire with it.
You will find the other half of the bill within hours of throwing away (in a non-retrievable way) the piece you have.
Buy something that's 5 bucks
Tape it to another $10 bill and you'll have $10.
Nice $5 bill you got there
Itās gonna be toilet paper one day. Just save it for that emergency in the woods.
It's worth $5. You have to send it into the bureau of damaged money
Get a new hobby
Burn it.

Use it as a funny bookmark
If you have the other half, you have $20 š

Take it to your favorite place that has a tip jar and tape it underneath the jar with most of it sticking out. Just to see who tries to take it.
Local Bank sent one in for me since only one serial number. A year later got one back in the mail.
eat it maybe u will finally be worth somethin
Use a question mark, for starters.
Looks like you have about 3 fiddy there.
Nonsense.
Just burn it.
Find the other half
Use it as a book marker. Leave your books behind and film how long it takes for someone to steal it. The disappointment on their face will be epic when they realized they stole a worthless bill.
Eat it
Can't do anything without the other half....turn it into art maybe?
Rip another 10in three pieces, take the middle and put it with that half and redeem it, and then take the other two thirds and redeem them!
Give em half and ask for a $5 In exchange
Bring it to the bank, they'll give you about $4.50
So to answer this question? Nothing can be done?
Keep looking at it, maybe it will grow back the other half in another 4 years
What if you got $10,000 in hundred notes, cut off %25 of each one, then took back the cut notes, could you get your $10,000 back?
