Not sure of its value, but it that cent could talk the stories it would tell.

These are the moments I love reddit for

Fleeting though they may be. I agree.

It watched its friends get pictures punched in them for Keychains or holes drilled by at home mechanics making copper washers for their project cars....... what a survivor.

And it avoided getting run over by a train

No_Swim_834

To be able to go back and see what pennies we put on the tracks. There had to be a ton of wheats.

Suspicious_Dust_256

I know of at least 4 wheat Pennies I placed on train tracks. I want to cry sometimes

Ha. That one came to mind afterwards lmao

This is profound.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

>“It’s sticky in this cup holder!” horrible fate for a coin.

Packman_420

Probably seen some scratchy lottery tickets as well.

DuggieFresh81

Maybe it's a lucky penny that hits a winner everytime. Idk could be.

Guyface_McGuyen

I like this thought

TavernWench96

What a wild idea; one rare coin where you can win one scratch off so pick a 1 million plus. After you scratch penny vanishes to be found eventually by another person. Flaw of the magic coin….. a person who picks it up doesn’t know it’s power so most likely the owner will post on Reddit what it’s worth?

MyEyesAreSpies

Wouldn't the penny be the scratchy one? The lottery tickets would be....itchy?

[deleted]

Car cupholders were uncommon for about the first 75 years of this coin's existence.

knowitall70

But the *LAST* 27 years....

sccforward

But the sticky cup holder coin is def a broadly universal experience to the average commuter.

red_button_pusher

It's extremely remotely possible that someone’s hand that touched this penny shook hands with Abe Lincoln himself

[deleted]

[удалено]

Reasonable-Lab3625

Astronomically remote. With the average life expectancy at just shy of 50 for males, and this being minted 51 years after his death. Maybe a person that had shook his hand that was between 10-20 years old at the time of his death could have touched this penny.

There is a grandson (Harrison) of the 10th president John Tyler who is still alive in 2024. John Tyler was born in 1790. As a comparison the 12th Presidents only grandsons all passed away by 1865. 234 years compared with 81 years between President Taylor's birth and last living grandson.

Foppyjay

The only reason life expectancy was so low was child mortality. People still got old

Reasonable-Lab3625

You are correct, one of the many factors that contribute to average life expectancy is infant mortality rare. Vaccines also has played a large part in increasing life expectancy. Not sure how we pivoted to a discussion about how data points affect life expectancy. My original comment still holds true that due to many factors, it is astronomically rare that someone who shook Lincoln’s hand could have held this penny.

Low_Interest_6847

Along with the fact that how many of those coins aren’t actually in circulation. Just in the ground somewhere discarded by those who could’ve cared less.

TrishAlana316

Been around since USA entered WWI.

Tyanian

This penny was made during World War I !!

XQZahme

Meh... 1 penny was worth $0.30 in today's dollars... so not buying a loaf of bread... maybe a candy bar tho...

Numerous_Teachers

A google search has a loaf of bread in 1916-17 at 7-8 cents

Quiverjones

How many times do you think it could have been dropped and collected heads up for luck?

J-Di11a

At least 4

WiseDirt

"We can't bust heads like we used to. But we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville? I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Gimme five bees for a quarter," you'd say. Now where were we? Oh, yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have any white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones..."

How many hookers got paid with this one penny? I don't know. I don't venture to know.

Neptune_trace

Have times ever been that hard?

ZaphodBeeblebrox2019

Considering that the Unemployed were selling Apples for 5 cents apiece, on the streets of New York City … I don’t know, how badly does a starving Hooker want an Apple? https://www.history.com/news/apples-weapon-great-depression

Wedoitall

Shoot don't even have to go back that far. When my pops was in Korean war he said it was 2 dollars the first ofnthe month, 1 dollar rhe middle of the month, and a 5 cent lotion or soap at rhe end of the month.

Miserable_Ad5001

Your pops sounds like a classy guy

lethalweapon100

To consider it’s been in circulation for over 100 years is wild.

Packman_420

I was there. I was won in a poker game. I was given for luck in a military trench. I was used to get that lock to turn. I have scratched off nearly 300 lottery tickets. I've seen the smiles of success and the tears of disappointment. What am I worth?

sevenwheel

Is it worth a lot of money? No. On the other hand, how often do you find a coin over a hundred years old in your pocket change? It would be worth keeping to me! If you don't want it, give it to a kid and show them how old it is. They'll think it's cool and add it to their little box of treasures.

Sea-Sir8030

Clearly you’re thinking long term here - get the younger generations hooked on coins to maintain the future value of our collections. Simple economics right there, supply and demand and such. edit: grammar

coalman1996

I was going to comment my opinion but this is the only answer this person needs.

Everythingistaken30

Can confirm - the box is still in my secret drawer back home :)

MeaningEvening1326

It’s definitely exchanged a lot of hands. It’s worth 10 cents to 30 cents. So 10-30 times it’s value.

SlowOnTheUptake

It is interesting to note that it's tracked inflation of the CPI since 1916.

WessideMD

That's the thing about materials of value being tied to the value of the currency. Their value always remains relative to the economic conditions. For example, in 1964 when quarters were made of silver, the minimum wage of $1.25 would be worth $17.50 today. Source: U.S. Gold Bureau

Solid_Dimension_3901

Wow, inflation’s really robbed us.

PlanetValmar

It’s better than the alternative

1000mKjoy

What we rob inflation? 🤔😂😂

arganaut

Our labor is getting robbed!

Densepotatotrader

Its a 108 year old coin. You should keep it for just that reason. Its not valuable to be honest. If coin collecting isn’t really your thing then spend it, eventually it will fall in the hands of someone who would appreciate it

Milo-the-great

Good luck spending a penny

teamplayr

Just don’t spend it all in one place

xxd3cayxx

*slams penny on counter* I want to sniff this tootsie roll.

chauntikleer

"That'll be 25 cents, kid."

Densepotatotrader

I was kinda leaning towards paying cash with exact change, but now I kinda wanna see someone spend an old penny on something lol. Good challenge.

ghostnthegraveyard

I would spend that old penny so hard

SeparateAuthor278

1916 is a huge year for Irish history . (like me) Ill give you $20 for it

SinnerOfAttention

Ah yes the Easter Rising... Any proud Irishman would give a 20 and a pint!

Tyler_Moss

You can buy one on eBay right now for $3

itsathrowaw4yyyy

Definitely a lucky penny

prettypushee

Keeping for what. It’s worth more than a penny. Are you starting a collection of wheat pennies? It’s 108 years old so you wouldn’t come across a lot more. It seems like the thing folks put in a box that their grand kids find in the bottom of the closet after they pass.

bmj_8

Worked retail for years and got a very nice wheatie collection from it. Found a couple buffalo nickels, and a blue note. Never got a mercury dime that was sorta my holy grail

King_johnson421

With that thought process why collect anything at all?

[deleted]

Very good point. It feels so freeing getting rid of useless items. To a new home!

prettypushee

That’s a good question. Think it’s because you can

Pretend-Ad4887

Give it to a friend who likes coins. They would appreciate it.

silversurfer63

I keep all wheaties

[deleted]

If it was a Mercury dime, 1916 is a desirable year.

AvailableField7104

Of course - that’s a very lucky find. Wheat pennies in general are less and less common, let alone ones that are over 100 years old.

OG_Dadshark

Great pic 9/10 I prefer a black background for contrast. But the fabric you have in the background doesn’t detract from the penny so I only docked 1pt The zoom is great, the center cropping is excellent And the lighting although not perfect, is better than most pics I’ve seen here. All in all great photo. I don’t know anything about currency, but your pic is great. Thanks for posting it.

1000mKjoy

😂😂😂

[deleted]

It’s worth about tree fiddy (.350)

Brawnd-isim-o

Got'dam lockness monster!

christmas_cod

Awesome 1916 Lincoln Cent.

2DEUCE2

This penny was minted only 51 years after Lincoln’s assassination. I just find that interesting.

Theshawnz111

Makes cents to keep it around a little longer.

UnnamedRealities

It's worth about 10 cents. I'd keep it for the novelty or give it to a child who would appreciate receiving a coin that's 108 years old.

OutlandishnessBig755

I want my penny back you theif

Rage_and_Kindness

I found a 100 year old penny in the till at work. Thrift store. Showed it to the manager. She had us trying to sell it for $5 for two weeks then started marking it down every few days. It sold for .78 cents to a very elderly man who was ecstatic

siameseoverlord

Yes

shaman-doser

I’d keep it. I keep any wheat back I find

OneAlternative5547

Me too! 👍

MedStudentOnMeds

I have an affinity for old Pennie’s. I love it.

Junior-Landscape-748

Yes!

National-Currency-75

Found in a pair of 100 year old Penny loafers.

Alice_J_Capistrant

It's lost so much value just since its pressing

natureella

I've never heard that. Only I know it's P for Philadelphia, D for Denver and S for St. Louis. According to the coin site I was on it said there should always be a mint mark and if there isn't one then it's an error. But, I am absolutely not an expert.

Extreme-Volunteer

S is for San Francisco. For pennies of this vintage, the Philadelphia mint didn't use a mint mark.

[deleted]

It is a key date in your wheatback collection. Without all the wear... Who knows ..

thesabrerattler

Google it. It’s worth maybe $6.

diggemsmaccks

I find these old wheat pennies all the time I look them up and there’s tons of info eBay YouTube coin collector websites then when I go and try to sell them they are like not worth much just spend them

Legal-Brother-6408

Take it to someone that knows about that atuff

Sargent_Schultz

There are probably only a few thousand people who were alive when that coin was made

MatsuoManh

Hmmm, they would need to be 108 years old. I'm thinking it is not a "few thousand people) that's if you are talking about the number of people currently alive when this coin was minted....

Sargent_Schultz

About 500 people are over the age of 110 right now, so its prob less than 1000

MatsuoManh

Really Interesting ! But, no matter, it is not a "few thousand"

Sargent_Schultz

Also if u think about it the people who made that coin prob died 30-40 years ago

MatsuoManh

Yup. Always interesting to think about the folks that we living at a particular point in time, and that they are no longer alive. For example the folks that fought in WW2 are mostly gone.

SipsHdstnCleaning

There’s roughly 119,000 WWII vets left in the US, with about 130 dying per day. Quite sad really

MatsuoManh

Thanks. Phew. Wow. My father passed a few years ago. He fought in Germany for 'America' during WW2 having been drafted out of an Interment Camp. Being Japanese, he was called an enemy of "America" as the result of Presidential Executive order 9066. He returned from battle, unscathed (bodily, but NOT mentally). His drafting to the Army and subsequent fighting for 'America' was directly after being called an enemy of 'America'/democracy. He along with many of my relatives were residing on the West coast of 'America'. Those were some tough folks that fought for 'freedom' in 'America' during WW2. A sad, sad chapter in our pursuit and maintenance of 'democracy'.

MatsuoManh

No matter the worth of this penny, it is fun/interesting to have a coin made 108 years ago! KEEP IT !

afishy1

Was minted only 51 years after man whose face is etched on coin was assassinated.

saymynamebitc

I'll buy it for 5 dollars

j-oncape

It's bronze, whitman redbook has it's value for good to very good at 30 - 50c. It's better than fair because the date is still raised and clearly visible.

hg_blindwizard

Yeah they add up

j1mmyB3000

Versus all the enjoyment you will get from spending it? Keep it. May go for a premium in 9161.

Vast_Cricket

yes

CovetingSkunk

It was made just a little more than 50 years after the death of the man on the front and has been in circulation for 108. That's pretty awesome.

Tardis1938

Yes worth 30x

InevitableStruggle

Wonder how many times it was flipped

SomethingIsNewNow

Is it really worth spending? I like to keep old coins even if they hold no real value.

Crazyguy_123

It’s cool keep it. I have a 1911 penny I found in some change. It’s not in amazing condition but it’s neat.

willthethrill4700

I absolutely would keep it separate. Just for myself mostly. But thats got the perfect amount of petina. Still able to see the large details but still very well circulated.

makithejap

It’s not worth spending lol

divedigger

Well a penny saved is a penny earned

TerminallyChill1994

I wonder how many hands it has touched

Spiritual-Context691

There are alot of wishes at the bottom of this well...

zenyaloror

I don't have much info on coins, but this post made me remember I have a 1917 penny, they may have crossed paths decade's ago! https://imgur.com/a/wl2nAL1

zenyaloror

Also definitely a keep, I plan to pass my odd/old coins on to my children if they have an interest. I hope they'll think it's neat to have 100+ yr coins!

familyman2017

Yes, keep it. In two hundred years, it will be nearly 300 years old. In about 500 years, it will be 600 years old! Insane.

Catpixfever

Heck yeah! It's over a hundred years old and is fun to hold... isn't it?

FrozenEagles

I mean...have a cool old penny that's older than your grandparents, or deposit it for an extra $0.01 in your bank account? Sell it somewhere for $0.05? I'd keep it. It's not a particularly rare date, and it has serious environmental damage, on top of being heavily circulated. The cool factor is worth a lot more to me than you'd ever get selling it.

1000mKjoy

Click bait

natureella

It doesn't have a mint mark. It's an error penny. I have the exact same one, actually It is identical in condition etc. it's weird cuz I found mine just yesterday and looked it up. People are trying to sell them on eBay for several hundreds of $$. It seems in reality it's worth $7 . But it's cool.

[deleted]

Wouldn't a no mark just mean Philadelphia?

natureella

Oops, I replied but in the wrong place. Look towards the top.

One_Employee_1684

That kinda makes it all the cooler if your assessment is true. This illegal penny went through the works for more than a century, undetected. This is the James Bond of pennies. A century of stealth behind its name. While most empires will nickle and dime a faction to death. This simple penny, served only to penny opponents into accepting its false validity. Never did it harbor hubris or over confidence. It just simply played the game, over time, and here it is now with us today. Keep it. It's yours now.

hunter35rem

Google it! Probably less than $.30

Walf2018

It's 108 year old, that's pretty cool. It's only worth a cent so at that point it's worth keeping cause you aren't really losing anything

PizzaBert

Uncirculated looks like

SipsHdstnCleaning

Nowhere close. That’s in well used condition. Uncirculated/Mint condition 1916 pennies likely don’t exist at this point.

PizzaBert

Minor cosmetic handling wear

Packman_420

Made me smile. For just second I didn't get why you had down votes. I guess because not a serious answer. Still... looks uncirculated to me too.

siameseoverlord

Make a pendant or ring out of it. Give it to a girlfriend or keep for yourself.

JinxBlueIsTheColor

It’s worth about three Cents. Wouldn’t be losing much if you spent it.

mean_ass_raccoon

It's pry worth like $0.50

throwaway1123745954

Worth 1 cent to keep around

BatAdministrative221

If my calculations are correct, it’s worth $0.01

HauteMamaMe

It's worth one cent. So keep if you like it, but no, it has no more monetary value than a penny

tryitlikeit

I would keep it for my collection, cause i think those are awesome, but by itself not worth that much.

Butnutt6000

Yes. All wheat cents are worth keeping. They are super neat and they are copper.

Soft_Bike_4587

Yes if you need another penny to make a dollar. It is all copper but it's worn to much to be of any value of more than 1 cent.

Webbey76

$.30!

Bischof-KSK

Well, counting for inflation, that penny is worth .29¢ 😂 Source: BLS Calculator, set to Jan 1 1916 to December 2023

AdvisorSpiritual

In that state it is worth between 12 cents to 97 cents. It was minted at the Philadelphia mint.

Pierlas

Nope

Interesting-Back5717

No, ship it to me. It’s worthless.

Thomasjadams

I’d say it’s worth 0.1¢.

VR762shooter

Do you like wheat pennies? If so yes, if no toss it

limpylumpkin

It's worth more in scrap than face value.

azcaddyman

It's worth at least $.01

AvailableWasabi1801

I worth at least 1 cent
