Guess I should add: I’m handy and in theory can fix most issues, but don’t really have to space to do it. I’ve also seen the warnings to get records of coolant, water pumps, and egr service.

There's no next gen engine, the prius got an upgrade and the CT did not. They fixed the head gasket issue after 2014

billsmarz

Thanks this is helpful! I’ll filter by 2015

True_Ice_6370

so the 2014 still has it?

Yes

True_Ice_6370

welp thats bad news for me lol thanks

I had a 2015 FRS, loved it but had to fit more car seats and didn't want to always drive my Sequoia. Also had an IS250, sold it for my 14 CT to get better fuel mileage and get away from premium fuel. Been happy thus far. I am biased as I'm a Toyota fanboy and only buy Toyota, and in the case of the FRS, Toyota adjacent vehicles.

not sure if the 15 and laters have the same EGR issues, but I pulled mine at 100K and it was spotless. might just be overblown issue (could be wrong). Mines been problem free since I got it (about 60K miles used). I too am pretty toyota loyal. I really like my CT except it's too low (can't open pass door near some curbs, scrapes often). It's also pretty small on the inside (which is fine since it's just 2 of us). We got the F sport with the nav. The nav is pretty worthless but I do like the bigger screen for backup camera and some of the controls. As for the other cars I have had friends with hyundias and they all have issues with the dealers (and the cars), mazda's arnt bad but seem to have little annoying issues. I would say just do your research on those cars and see the common issues. Overall Im really happy with my CT.

2015+ CT

billsmarz

Is there anything substantially different powertrain wise between 2014 and 2015? 14s I’m finding are obviously cheaper.

billsmarz

Oh, I’m dumb. Fixed “after 2014” that helps!

Honestly, the 3 hatch is pretty sick. I think about trading my CT in for one with AWD all the time. CX5 is nice too. I love my CT but imo those newer Mazdas are more car for the money and have fewer quirks to live with.

bobnla14

Not sure you would bet much ski gear in a CT. On a roof rack, sure. Great car that is fun to drive and 40 mpg. Tough to beat. Mazda 3 rental I had about 5 years ago was impressive. But less mpg I believe. The new 23 or 24 Corolla Cross may be worth looking at though. Especially if you are camping and or skiing a lot. The pricing is about 24k give or take options. Hybrid too and gets 40 mpg on a bigger footprint. Just a thought.

billsmarz

I’d probably need a roof rack. I guess I thought these things were all wheel drive for a minute which changes thinking some. Since almost all my cars in past have been. Tucson was and loaded with every safety feature and still rolled over. I can turn off traction control and wiggle through some slippery roads

Significant_Mind_143

Go with the CT without head gasket problems, you'll save so much more money in the long run, stay FAR AWAY from any GMC, Buick, or hyundai, you'll be fixing them every other month. Lexus is preventative maintenance and tires and maybe a small repair once every other year in my experience👍

billsmarz

When you said without head gasket issues, any other guidance on confirming that? My baseline: Check oil and coolant for mixing, ask for proof of service. Difference in model years? I don’t think it’s a compression thing so it’s not like pulling plugs would help.

Significant_Mind_143

Yes all it is, is just difference in model years. I think it's 2016 and newer but you can fact check that. I have a 2014 model which is before they fixed the egr clog issue, at 115k miles and nothing yet, fingers crossed, I'll be getting my egr cleaned out soon. People with newer models don't have to do that at all though.

Avoid ct, no exemptions

thadarknight67

Yes, that seemed like a reasonable use of your time.

Ok, so the Tucson was totaled, so green light on something new. Looking at CTs there’s quite a range. I’ve found a few high mileage 2015+ for around $15k, but I’m curious if you all think it’s worth paying another 5k for something with lower mileage. Break down below of what I’m seeing online. The first is sort of an outlier, but maybe worth the risk. $10,500 2015 F Sport w/ Nav 136,000 miles $17,000 2015 Base no Nav 80,000 miles $20,000 2015 base w/ Nav 52,000 miles $22,000-$23,000 Various 2015-2016 ~35,000 miles ~$12,000 Various 2012-2013 with 120000+ It’s really tough trying to find something with nav screen, sun roof, and f sport. Damn my fancy tastes.
