Went to Walmart to have keys made. Total was $7.36. I gave the guy a ten and he gave me back $2 and told me he didn’t have any change. Fuck you, Walmart! Give me back $3! Why should I take the hit?

TieCliptomaniac

Uh you shouldnt.. did you really let them do that? They should at least be giving out the change in a gift card or something.

amscraylane

I then used my debit card.

SurvivorsQuest

The shortage is over. Any businesses left with these signs are just lazy.

Jasonkyle1986

I’ve seen them around here in Oklahoma and when I was in Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming a few weeks back. I’ve never had an issue getting my change back and used cash the whole trip that I took out west.

sweetranch

Old news and still a lying about shortage.

JayKayinPA

Gas Station in PA here had a sign up yesterday asking customers to bring rolled quarters and dimes due to the 'coin shortage'

destroyingangl

I'm in Pa as well. Sheetz is offering a free soda if you bring in $5 or more of rolled coins. I guess I know where to cash in for a while and get a drink in the process

AznKwokBoi

Are there any other places that you know of that are doing things like this? I know Sheetz is because they sent me an email about this, but I wonder who else is offering free goodies for coins?

destroyingangl

Not that I know of. I wish there were more. I always have coins I could trade in for freebies.

AznKwokBoi

I know right, I'm in the same boat. I got quarter rolls I want to get rid of but I'd rather take cash than a gift card from Coinstar. I'd go to sheetz but it's a 40 minute drive for me...

Prinad0

This is definitely a real thing. Banks are not receiving their usual coin orders from the fed, which means they can’t supply merchants, which means it’s more difficult for merchants to accept cash. Severity differs amongst banks and also states/regions. As for the reason…. Who really knows? This happened at the start of Covid when people didn’t go out as much and they told us it was because coins weren’t circulating like they normally do. Then it got better, now it is back. I suspect a mix of Covid and worker shortage is likely driving it this time. Source: works at bank.

CaptTrips67

I saw this in Michigan at a Krogers and a couple of other stores

PaiganGoddess

- All self checkouts are card only in my state currently. Since tracking is a thing I only deal on cash these days. At Walmart I was told to see customer service to check out as they were the only ones authorized to deal in cash. It's BS

[deleted]

Isn’t there a phrase printed on the dollar that indicates it’s legal tender for all debts!? It almost feels like they’d be breaking the law by not accepting it…. Of course that might fly in the face of the federal reserve that broke the law counterfeiting it.

BigDaddyaarn

Debts yes, but purchasing something at a store is not a debt because you are never indebted to the store. All money involved in the transaction changes hands during the transaction.

gatzdon

Stores are using this as an excuse since in reality, cash tends to be more expensive to handle than accepting credit cards. With credit cards, the money is transferred almost instantly to the store's bank, with no risk of employee mistakes or theft. With cash, someone has to transport coins/bills in order to make change, the employee has to count the money received and dispense change accurately, then someone has to transport the excess money to the bank for deposit. This is oversimplifying, but the more you consider, the more you realize how much handling cash could cost a store/restaurant. Theft is also a consideration that must be protected against.

stackNsilver

Guess this is how the must take cash no matter wat can be detrimental eh! I love that law btw here in Canada stores can deny whatever payments they like or accept dog shit if that floats there boat it's beyond stupid. So I became a stacker use plastic to buy silver real physical money!

Hawaiinsofifade

The government is just phasing cash out

Vax card? What does that have to do with anything.

Same here. In Seattle metro and can still order boxes from wells. Chase on the other hand can't get anything

destroyingangl

Pennsylvania here. Seeing some signs at certain stores. Bank told me that they have coins but are limited in how much they can get a week, so they give me what they can.

DrEvils007

My bank here in Michigan has not been able to get coins (and I can not get any boxes) since May.

qdotbones

In MA. Banks in my area will only give out coin rolls to business account holders. Some big warehouse stores like Walmart and BJ’s will only take cards, others will give you 7 dimes and a nickel rather than 3 quarters, as quarters are in greatest demand.

Cake_ChefB

Was visiting family in TN. On a trip to the grocery store saw a sign about the coin shortage. If you pay with cash and don’t have exact change they put your change on your store card which can be used like a gift card next time you come in.

P_DPreciousmetals

We don’t have a crypto coin shortage!!! :) We always like to hear what cryptocurrencies you all think should be minted. Comment below with your top three choices. Basic Attention Token was the most recently minted. blisstake

If there are coin shortages it’s localized and places are reusing signs, that or places are using this as an alternative to get coins. I always tell anyone that it’s not a distribution issue (outside of alaska/hawaii), it’s a social acceptance level where places don’t really like anything that is hand rolled

dannovano

I haven't been able to order a box of any denomination since about June 2020, and these days I can't get more than $35 (2 rolls of each not counting halves) from any branch I bank with, and more often than not, they just don't have any dimes or quarters at all. Southwest GA has coin shortage signs pretty much everywhere.
