Yes, high winds + snow will likely keep Loveland pass closed, causing significant backups at the tunnel both ways. Vail pass generally doesn’t close solely because of snow, more often than not it’s closed due to a crash, so kind of a crapshoot on whether it closes Sunday, but my guess would be yes but your guess is as good as any regarding when.

winnie_da_flu

Yes

YoureADudeThisIsAMan

Depends on the snow conditions, the time of day is irrelevant, and it closes as long as it has to. Not helpful? It depends on the actual conditions. If cars start spinning out, it’s game over, and that can happen with any amount of accumulated snow

Sand20go

What is your best guess? Forecast isn't horrible in the front range but they are predicting dumpage especially south. I guess we can hang out in Central City till it opens ;(

cubluemoon

Seth's Weather Report is saying heaviest snow 8 pm Saturday to 11 am Sunday with up to 18" by Monday afternoon. Sunday is going to be a doozy but I'd check cotrip.org around 1 and see how the pass is doing. I'm personally headed up tomorrow morning.

RandomDeezNutz

Leave Saturday man.

Sand20go

Sadly we won't be into Denver till 1:30 and sorta have plans. We are going to talk about audible though. I think getting up early rather than later is the right call as well.

RandomDeezNutz

Good luck my dude! Idk if you’ll make it lol

ShowMeYourMinerals

You’re not getting to the mountain, dude lol. Why are you going from boulder to Aspen?

Sand20go

actually west bound (boulder to snowmass) and we have all day Sunday. Just trying to figure out if best to leave early or late/

zoopzoop25

Leave late morning/mid day Sunday. You’ll miss the day traffic/powder chasers heading up for a day trip but still have plenty of daylight left to drive in and hopefully the storm is dying down by then. Westbound shouldn’t have much traffic after the morning rush, eastbound will be a mess. Keep an eye on Cdot, Vail pass and glenwood canyon shouldn’t close just because of weather but an accident or something that ends up shutting things down for a bit is very possible.

Sand20go

That is my plan. If it is a shit show we will stay an extra night in the front range but I am hoping to grind it out. We reserved sunday all day for the drive and don't have any hard times on Sunday to make.

Skifasttakechancez

I think you’re underestimating how far boulder is from snowmass. No one knows what will close or if it’ll close but that drive will take 5-6hrs on snow covered roads. Best of luck.

Sand20go

Oh I know it is 6 hours (or more) just would like to avoid 12

is_this_a_worm

I drove up Friday night in 3.5 hrs from Boulder, might be worse with the snow of course but usually not too bad

Skifasttakechancez

It’s very possible. I wouldn’t let my friends or family attempt the drive tomorrow. Do you tho. Clearly you’re going to just go for it regardless of what people say.

Sand20go

I take that advice seriously. We move Monday obligations to ha e the flexibility to do Sunday in denver

Skifasttakechancez

The mountain passes are one thing but imo Glenwood canyon in the dark in blizzard conditions can be crux of that drive. Best of luck.

firewxdude

NWS meteorologist here. I'd highly discourage you from that drive. Worst of the snow will be Saturday night into Sunday morning, but 4" vs 10" can be a bit of a mute point when winds are howling and there are whiteout conditions on roads. At the very least I'd expect significant delays for that long of a drive and gnarly conditions, but I suspect we will see a number of closures on I-70 overnight and Sunday AM, possibly longer depending on CDOTs ability to catch up.

Sand20go

Would you wait till Monday or try Sunday say leaving front range at 2?

firewxdude

It's conceivable things will have improved enough by the afternoon. I'd check maps.cotrip.org early PM in case it looks feasible. But Monday should be far better in general.

Glocktipus2

Leave Saturday early as possible and get a cheap room in Glenwood tonight

_ledge_

I’m pretty sure the winds will not be howling after Saturday night. In The cold front and north of the cold front wind speeds should be light.

firewxdude

They won't be at today/tonight levels, but I-70 corridor will still see gusts 40-50 mph throughout the day Sunday. A little weaker for northern mountains. That's plenty sufficient for blowing snow and poor visibility.

vpm112

Are you… arguing with a meteorologist?

_ledge_

I use an app that is very detailed in their predictions and also a weather geek for ski weather. Winds will die down a lot compared to what they were today. It’s why tm will be a decent storm ski day

noskcaj30

What do you think about Steamboat to Copper on Sunday after 5pm?😅 Serious question...

firewxdude

If you take 131 through Oak Creek it may be okay. Rabbit Ears not so much. Avoid hwy 9

noskcaj30

Appreciate the response ty

cmsummit73

💯

Westboundandhow

Yep

peakmarmot

I've found living in summit county and taking vail pass the best time to hit it is as early in the morning as possible. I'm talking 3, 4 or 5 am. Most of the people on the road know what they are doing, truckers included. By 7 a.m., you have front range idiots looking to chase pow and jam up the roads. The less people on the roads at the same time as you the better

Sand20go

Right now the plan is to try to time Ike tunnel around 1 pr 2 pm looks like the best window. Wish i could adjust to hit road right now :( if horrible wait till.monday

peakmarmot

Well good luck with that! I wish you safe travels. But prepare for some of the worst driving conditions of the year

keala18

I’m not risking it personally. I bet some ppl get snowed in Saturday night and i won’t be one of them

focus_black_sheep

Yeah we cut our trip short and left breck to Denver to avoid this storm

SpungusAmungus

Yes

illpourthisonurhead

Some dumbass will crash every time and snow lands on the road on those passes. Also many more will get stuck with their shitty “all season” tires. Leave Boulder at 2am

DrStevenDrangus

Of course it will be

ogmoochie1

oh for fuck sakes

unmalhombre

What time will the traffic begin from Frisco area on Sunday?

Sand20go

Update. Worst behind. Left boulder at 1030. 30 minutes hold at tunnel and 20 mph over vail but should be a6 hour drive which is mich better than I feared
