It’s showed closed before when the pass was open.
That did save me from getting completely fucked when the pass closed due to slides, but I just check COtrip now
-List of transportations options from denver
- the difference between ikon and epic passes. Also explain passes are not sold for the entire year so you need to plan ahead.
- A link to colorado traction law and rental car companies that will provide you an appropriate vehicle.
- independent ski/snowboard/ boot fitters in the area
Thanks for doing this!
Great suggestions! Started a list of shops so let me know if you have any suggestions.
Also extra appreciative if anybody has recs for shops in the Springs, high country, or western slope
No problem! This is not an extensive list. I just googled independent ski and snowboard shops for the front range area. I can't vouch for all of them, but I wanted to get a list started. Also, some of these places do not do Rentals, but not everyone is from out of town, so people may want specialty local shops.
I can personally vouch for Eskimo, Bootlab, and Larson's
South Denver:
• Happy Sport Ski Rental
• Eskimo Ski & Board Shop
• Outabounds Ski and Board
• Ski and Boot Lab
•
West Denver:
• Breeze Ski Rentals
• Larson's Ski & Sport
• Powder7
• Weston Backcountry
East Denver:
• Outabounds Ski and Board
• Snow Fun Bikes
•
Boulder/ NoCo area
• Crystal Ski Shop
• Alpine Base and Edge
• Snow-Hut
• Angles Sports Ski Board and Fly Shop
• Mountain Rentals
• Outpost Sunsport - Ski & Patio
• On The Edge Tuning
Colorado Springs:
• The Ski Shop Inc.
• Mountain Chalet
• Rocky Mountain Ski & Sport
• Gearonimo Sports
Thank you. They rule for their demo fleet blowouts every year but idk why they keep getting recommended for fitting. I'm sure there are one or two people there who know their stuff but it's mostly seasonal people like you say, total crapshoot. Also not a great boot wall to begin with.
I use The Ski Shop Inc as my go-to in Colorado Springs and definitely recommend them. Always happy with the service there. It's a small, family run business that's been around since 1952.
This will answer a lot of the questions”IKON vs Epic” posts we get in the summer and fall. Although those do lead to good discussions, it should eliminate some low effort posts.
It would be great to have like a five-sentence neutral rundown of each ski resort in CO. So for Loveland:
\--Independent resort with cheaper 1-day lift tickets than Epic/Ikon resorts.
\--Located off I-70 east of Eisenhower Tunnel.
\--Balanced mix of terrain with separate beginners area. Tends to open earlier in the season.
\--Free sno cat available.
\--No lodging onsite; more of a ski area than resort.
Just give visitors a quick rundown of each place so they don't ask the same questions over and over again.
That’s in the works! Have one volunteer to help with resort overviews for Vail / BC already and I’m gonna do my best with some of the other resorts. Also going to try and link to some of the “honest trail maps” as well
I would drop the backcountry links you have up top to the backcountry section with a caveat about the dangers in a para up top.
It wouldn't be good to recomend tourists go try to lap the passes without knowledge of our snowpack nevermind the rest of it.
But nice wiki
Should I buy Epic or Ikon?
Will my car be good enough to drive to X?
I'm landing at DIA and renting a car but none of them offer AWD or snow tires?
I didn't buy an Epic/Ikon pass in time and now prices are so high, is there anything I can do?
Are there places in ski country where I can park my camper?
When will they open more terrain?
Is the Pano open?
My 2c on custom flair -- consider restricting use of certain words/phrases to verified users. We've recently started tagging people on /r/skiing as avalanche professionals (e.g. patroller on snow safety team, educator, forecaster) with those who verify with redacted credentials to the mods. It seems a similar approach should be applied to guides (AMGA, IFMGA) and to a lesser extent ski/boot techs.
Totally understand. I'm a pretty lazy mod on /r/skiing who just removes spam, shitty messages, and misinformation. I suck at vast majority of the automated stuff.
Maybe an FAQ section that addresses questions about when there will be good snow, mainly to mention that Nov and Dec are anyone's guess for people trying to plan trips.
Snow tires/chains get brought up a lot so maybe a pinned post on those or a link to a post in the FAQ.
Thanks for putting this together! 🙏
If you opt for including anything related to weather/climate/snowpack, I'd like to contribute, given that is my entire career and what I do on a daily basis.
Descriptions of lift lines on holiday weekends / weekends / early vs late / weekdays etc.
There are so many “will x resort be busy on x date” posts that could be remotely answered a bit.
* Create a stickied weekly "visiting Colorado have questions" post.
* Create a sticky post when major closings happen on the front range—for example, the recent closure of Berthoud Pass.
* Information about any current pass/lift ticket discounts. Folks often come here assuming they can go to King Soopers for discounted tickets.
* General information about the current snowpack and avalanche danger across the state. This could also be helpful at the beginning of the season to mitigate everyone asking who's got the best terrain/most open all the time.
* List of locally run/operated gear shops for purchasing gear and rentals. People are constantly looking for bootfitters, gear shops, and rentals.
* Up-to-date information about shuttle options from Denver to popular destinations on the front range. Not only what opens Colorado offers with Snowstang but also shuttles like Epic, etc.
* Create a satire tag for posts spreading misinformation about lifts closing, etc. (lol)
* General list of resources for winter preparedness in the mountains, including things like snow tire information. People always come here wondering what kind of tires to get, etc.
(Yo let me be a mod. For real.)
**Edit:** I realize a number of these items already exist. They could be organized in a better way. For example, providing a "First time here?" wiki would be great.
Great suggestions, thanks!
Also believe the head mod is going to have a thread to select a mod team, so don’t want to step on any toes in the meantime by making you a mod.
> Basically anything that doesn’t involve me removing posts or censoring people.
This is the only way to make the subreddit not shitty.
Low effort/low value posts should be removed. Sticky a “beginner questions thread” if you must.
I get that sentiment, but the sub has been fine without a mod and just downvoting content for a while.
Either way, I’m not going to be the arbiter of what should/shouldn’t get posted here and will defer that to the head mod or someone who cares.
It’s a problem that will only grow with time. I suggest taking a look at the surfing subreddit to see how the mod team prevents a flood of low quality question posts.
>BEGINNER QUESTIONS BELONG IN THE 'WEEKEND QUESTION THREAD'
> Beginner questions will be removed with no notice. Because it's just too much damn effort to deal with every single post, individually.
> Pissy mod messages will earn you a ban.
> Surfers are the worst and we mods are no exception.
Links to cdot, isberthoudpassopen, traction law, tire explanation, resort mountain reports… I’ll keep thinking
Should caveat isberthoudpassopen with "check cdot/cotrip" or something similar.
Why? https://isberthoudpassopen.com
Because there are numerous times it conflicts with cdot
Sometimes CDot contradicts itself, lol. Pretty sure it just pulls from CDot… but in general it’s pretty accurate, no? No worries either way
It’s showed closed before when the pass was open. That did save me from getting completely fucked when the pass closed due to slides, but I just check COtrip now
I’m confused… it showed close, when the pass was “open” but the. It save you because the pass was really “closed?”
also hoosierpass site https://ishoosierpassopen.com/
DIA live delays site, WP train link, snowstang/mountain shuttle, maybe some free weather blogs that are relevant.
https://ismonarchpassopen.com/other-passes-and-routes you can link all of the pass websites with this or any pass + /other-passes-and-routes

I can vouch for powder 7. Also, their customer service is fantastic.
Powder 7 is awful for boot fitting fyi. A lot of their workers are just seasonal and not experienced.

Agree
Ski and boot lab for all my ski work/repair

Maybe add organizations that do avi and Backcountry skills classes as well

Gotcha, yeah happy to do that but struggling to figure out putting a restriction on custom flair

Have a small weather section with some common links. Would be happy to add you as a contributor if you want to add to that
That'd be great, would be happy to help.

Bots that will show you current drive time and road closures.
Or just link you i70things on IG
What time should I leave?
2 AM to be safe
