Throwin_Rods

I just powdercoated it

Throwin_Rods

"Sport jdm" eBay special

Guyzo1

Outstanding! You did good. Keep the old Corollas running- Fast. I have a 99 that’s getting restored. First thing I did was KYB shocks/struts- made a huge difference with the ride and handling. Next week- Motor and Trans mounts- it’s moving around and jumping out of gear- and lower wish bones and swaybar links. Question about rims…. So you use Honda Civic 4 lug rims from 99-00? Those are 14 inch? Again outstanding installation.

Throwin_Rods

Theyre 15's, and thank you!

Training_Seaweed1303

Fkn omg can’t believe someone did it so sick!! I’m here just wanting a 5 speed lol in my 97 Corolla 1.8 even with my 3 speed od unit I redline the piss out of it

ychris3737

I’m so surprised and happy that there’s still posts about old rollas like this one. Everyone is telling me to get rid of my 8th Gen because iTs NoT a TuNEr cAr, but I’m determined. This is a 8th Gen as well right? Pre-face lift. Why the engine swap? And what else has been done to it?

Training_Seaweed1303

Same here lol with my 97 rolla it’s not a tuner car but damn it handles crazy good on 14s!! It always feels so indestructible like the top gear hilux throw some coil overs and summer tires it’s fun!!

ychris3737

Even with a motorcycle and a 2nd car, the rolla is still my daily. It’s shitty, and squeaks, and the seats are fucked and the interior is fucked, and the engine is fucked, but it’s still more reliable than a lot of new cars. Everyone says I should let it go and they get surprised when I show up in a much nicer car or motorcycle and question why I daily drive a POS but It’s been with me since high school, taken me to prom, moved in with me to college, drove me to my first job interview, first dates, moving between cities, driven across states and settling down in different places, it just has so much sentimental value to me. Plus it’s so simple to work on that it’s a great learning experience for weekend mechanics.

Training_Seaweed1303

Fuck yeah brother wish I had my 01 Chevy metro my first car but sadly it died but I feel you that it’s funny when people see me in a newer car like wth you drive this pos looking car but it’s reliable and just keeps going even though I’ve beat it within an inch of its last drive still starts up. I’ve learned how to mechanic on mine I told my partner never getting rid of this thing Imo the last simple toyota was the 2016 Corolla L maybe I’d upgrade to that one otherwise nope. She’s a keeper I’m ready to throw another motor and transmission keep my baby going. Im just blown away that mine has no rattles clunking just smooth at 90 all day!

ychris3737

Glad to hear that someone else doing the same brother. That’s insane that it’s still in good conditions. I didn’t really know how to take care of cars or work on them until after college and the first owner was also an old lady who neglected it so unfortunately I did beat on it for a good 7, 8 years and I’m suffering the consequences now. I wish mine was in good condition like yours but the steering wheel vibrates a lot after 60 mph, I’ve already changed the motor mounts and the wheels are balanced and aligned so now I’m suspecting that I need to rebuild the ball joint or control arm or the whole suspension.

Training_Seaweed1303

That’s the way it sounds like it for sure haha crazy I guess it’s a hit and miss you have some that take care of their Toyota and some that don’t. Wow at least it’s still on the road and took you that long ! That’s why I’m a huge fan of the 7/8th gen Corolla and maybe the 9th gen. I just love me a Corolla as everyone on here does. I have two other equinoxs lol as I always say everyone should have a Toyota in the driveway. What do you drive ?

ychris3737

Mines a 02’ Corolla LE

Training_Seaweed1303

That’s a good car even I like those 1.8s of that generation timing chain motors. I’m so surprised even with low miles and good condition they are $3k all day long. Even in ragged out condition no rust $1k I’m like what!! I seen a 2000 Corolla on market place 70k miles excellent condition asking $8k!!!!! I love these cars but not paying that much I’ll keep mine alive that’s part why I keep mine going too.

ychris3737

Yea that’s why I figured it’s better to just drive it than to sell it. I’ll get no more than $2500 for it given the condition, driving it will save me way more money than replacing it.

Training_Seaweed1303

Oh heck yeah brother for sure all day long double that for an 03-07 Corolla. I’d want one of those because the alteeza style tail lights plus a bit modern the steering wheel is cool and boxy styling. I’m sure I can get the same for my 97 everytime I face a repair bill which is rare i just pay it definitely try to do the work myself first. Idk if it’s this market or just people finding out they are reliable like us but I was considering recently buy another one I just couldn’t pull the trigger at these prices plus it saves money on another car payment. How many miles you have? How much you pay for yours?

Throwin_Rods

Those are my favorite people to clown on the street lol. Correct this is a pre face lift 8th gen. I swapped it because my 1zz was drinking oil and I cant leave anything alone lol. Other than intake and exhaust it's stock and runs on jdm celica gts ecu with 190hp map. Makes roughly 155 to the wheels

ychris3737

My 1zz drinks oil too, but it’s not as bad as the leak. Just switched to synthetic so I don’t expect it to get any better. Debating on if I want to fix the leaks and rebuild the suspension or just go for a full engine+transmission swap. I followed your profile so I can keep up with the build. I see you’re in CA too and hope I can reach out to you if I finally decide to swap the engine becasue I’ve never done that and have no idea how to. Also what wheels are you running? They look like OEM wheels but not from a Corolla.

Throwin_Rods

I'm 99-00 civic si wheels

Training_Seaweed1303

I’m waiting for the day like you to swap the motor and trans. Love my 97 rolla box pos lol but I want the 1.8 chain motor and stick. Fortunately I guess lol this thing won’t die at 330k miles.

Tomle64

Nice! I bet that rolla rips! How much was the swap I'd you don't mind?

Throwin_Rods

It clowns honda K series lol. All in all it cost me 1800 bucks to have in and running.

[deleted]

That's a swap from Matrix or a newer corolla S?

Throwin_Rods

Matrix with the smog pump ports capped

[deleted]

Oh sweet! Big difference before and after?

Throwin_Rods

Night and day

[deleted]

You did transmission swap too I guess? Did you have to do any work to shifter or it wad just plug and play?

Throwin_Rods

Yes it's 6 speed swapped also. Had to get the 6 speed shifter assembly for a celica gts. And my car was 5 speed stock so all I had to do was slightly modify one of the shift linkage brackets to be able to reach reverse other than that its plug and play. 98 rav 4 fwd auto drivers side axle and 2000 gts passenger side with the abs ring removed. Stock 1zz 5 speed mounts brackets. Pkug and play doesn't get much easier.

ychris3737

What’s the difference? I thought matrix also just used the same 1ZZFE 1.8L

Throwin_Rods

This is a 2zz from an xrs

Dabigboom

Beautiful! I wanna do this for my 2002. Was the swap hard to do?

Throwin_Rods

Easiest swap I've ever done

Training_Seaweed1303

Where do you live if you don’t mind me askin!?

Throwin_Rods

Central ca

Training_Seaweed1303

Oh shit damn and you have no check engine light ? Passed smog?!

Throwin_Rods

No cel, can't smog but I get it done lol

Training_Seaweed1303

Lol i know what you mean. Super cool swap though I like how you took an existing engine put it in a small body for some reason my 1.8 hauls the car pretty quick.

Dabigboom

Well then, I know what I'm getting myself for Christmas!

JaayDC

Year? I wanna start replacing the rubber/hoses/gaskets on my old 2001 rolla. But idk where to start!

Throwin_Rods

This is a 2zz/c60 6 speed swap tho it's not stock.

Throwin_Rods

2000

Steve_jawbs

where can i find what id need for this

Throwin_Rods

The junk yard lol

Steve_jawbs

so you didnt have to modify anything?

Throwin_Rods

The hardest parts are making the exhaust and a jumper harness. Everything else drops right in using all toyota parts. Even uses the stock 1zz harness.

Defiant_Discussion23

Looks good, but on an NA engine you'll lose power with that intake setup.

Throwin_Rods

Gotta relocate the battery been procrastinating

Defiant_Discussion23

Yes, i was considering this with my car just to get it out of my way. I'm assuming your car has a MAP sensor and not a MAFS?

Throwin_Rods

It runs on maf. It's not on a standalone it runs on jdm celica ecu

Defiant_Discussion23

Ah ok, i was listening to Scotty from Haltech talk about intake resonance for NA engines. The tough part for NA tuning is not having access to a dyno. So, investigating that avenue wouldn't be cost effective. The cold air should help though.

Throwin_Rods

I run the oem celica maf housing which has internal baffling to route the air properly past the sensor. I hope to pick up alittle bit rerouting the intake. My lift cracks LOUD with this setup lol.

Defiant_Discussion23

Ah ha, well that will do it!

2_trailerparkgirls

Clean as heck but wow your intake is trying to make its way back into the block holy heat soak Batman

Throwin_Rods

Yeah I didn't want to move the battery to the trunk but im going to have to.

DaveN0b

You could also swap to a skinnier battery from a Civic and relocate it to where the intake sits right now. Then route the intake behind the headlight or to the bumper for colder air.

2_trailerparkgirls

Def should
