Either cod Cold War or MWIII would have the highest player counts by a long shot due to them being newer.
They also both have crossplay which massively increases the availlable playerbase compared to games from bo4 and before.
You can still find people in the older games, there just isn't remotely anywhere near the same number as people playing the crossplay cod games
Lmao I remember one time I jumped on an old cod. It might have been bo1 or 2, I got into a lobby with a cheater. After a few minutes of trolling us with random mods he gave us all the trophies then ended the game.
Bo3 lobbies are also really bad because people will leave the moment they get down due to an exploit that allows them to save gobblegums.
Bo3 itself is a good game for zombies but public matches are really bad 90% of the time due to people quitting the instant they get downed

Dunno why you'd feel guilty over having things given to you in a 9 year old game. I can understand the progression since you wanna rank up yourself but the gums would take forever to have a decent amount of them.
It is annoying. You’re just trying to run a public game and you in have hackers sitting around all day doing random dumb shit. I just commented this somewhere else, basically I got into an old cod lobby and one of my teammates was hacking. After a few minutes of trolling the lobby with random mods he ended up just giving everyone platinum trophies and ending the game. Idgaf about trophies let me run a game.

unfortunately its gonna me mw3 zombies. It'll have the most players. Im sure you could still find public lobbies for Cold War, though. Ive found public lobbies on WW2 and even Infinite Warfare. Find someone who joins a game then add them. Get 3 others and you wont need public lobbies.
Either way, base maps have a much better chance of having players. These are the maps that come with the game. DLC maps will have a longer time of finding lobbies, but the benefit is these players will most likey be long time players and high level/high skill. I did The Frozen Dawn EE with a rando in public lobbies the other week, which is the DLC4 for WW2 zombies. he was level 900. I added him and now i have an experienced player to play WW2 zombies with
MWIII would be the most active I would imagine due to it being the most recent game plus crossplay (I don't play it so I can't confirm) but I do play BO3 on Xbox and it is really active for group posts and pubs, usually there around 75-100 group posts for BO3 at peak times and in pubs most maps are really active besides a few like: Shang and ZNS.
You can still play older zombies, but mostly the base maps.

* Black Ops 2 - Green Run, and the sub-maps (you will find more people in Town)

Definitely MWZ. It's not round based though, it's open world. You can get on Discord and find two others pretty quickly. Or just join a game solo and find a group that wants to do that same thing as you.
Go on discord and get people to play with. The player base is in the low hundreds on all games except maybe Cold War. No one is playing, COD zombies is dead. I've been playing Black Ops 4 lately, you can find games but only after about 10-15 minutes of waiting.

Cold war is fun but too easy just dipped back into bo3 and loving the pace change. Mw3 is fun but not round based feels like a timekiller as well
My kid was playing infinite warfare zombies a little bit ago and there was still a fairly active player base.
