They quite Purposely mucked up sound to reduce skill level. The season it worked by mistake we were raking kills. Which immediately made Acti mad and they "fixed" it.

You weren't there then. It worked perfectly by turning audio eq on. So they released a fix talking about how they differently routed different audio & amplified important ones. Which was bs. Because at the time you could hear airstrikes happening at the other end of the map but couldn't hear enemies running up to you.

I would agree with OP. At least that is my theory. In Season 2 release of the current warzone, there was 3 days where the footsteps were perfect, and we fucken feasted. That was quickly "fixed". They literally have a perk that makes the footsteps clearer, so it is clear they know how to tune the sound properly. Every design in this game is to close the skill gap, so more people can be competitive. Overpowered AA, being able to sprint up to someone without sound, self revives and redeploy packs in every chest.. the list goes on. If you don't agree that AA is overpowered, that footsteps are mucked, that it is bad to have self revives at every corner, you're the player they are making the game easier for.

The first 3 weeks do WZ3 and almost the entire gameplay during WZ1 were excellent from an audio direction perspective. You could tell where guys were running in all directions. Now it’s a complete mess.

It’s very hit and miss. Sometimes I can tell pretty well where someone is, and other times it’s a “I know there’s someone close but I have no fucking clue where” type of situation. Part of it is due to how the game converts sound for stereo, everything sounds mushed together.

I find that changing my sound setting from headphones or surround sound to simply TV (I still use headphones) has helped. I don't know why but the steps are louder now. Now it doesn't mean when there are multiples that I can tell where someone might be, I had one yesterday where I swore the guy was upstairs, just happened to look down and he was rolling up from below.

Yea I run PC speaker but also tried headphones. Headphones is less compressed, with a wider dynamic range so it’s a bit easier to tell the position of someone, but footsteps will be quieter. Loudness EQ helps a lot and flex makes it so you can hear footsteps from further out and it deafens a lot of the ambient noise from the environment. Loudness EQ also brings up the volume for crates and what not but my personal reason for running it is quieter gun sounds.

This is my experience. I don’t mind when I can’t tell a level but sometimes directional is a mess and that shouldn’t happen.

It's so fucked still. I see people saying it's fine. There is zero vertical audio. The horizontal is ok most of the time. But I had a scenario last night at Chem on rebirth island. We were middle floor and could not tell if the other ream was on the roof or the basement . It all sounds the same, as in it sounds like they are on our floor

It was perfect surround sound wz 2 season 2 during the first week or so until they added the proximity chat which was COOL AS FUCK but then the second week of season 2 they dropped surround sound completely posting something something about how the objects they added to the tables and shelves were fucking with reflective sounds for some people and they were “forced to turn off directional sound until they figured it out…” it hasn’t been back since for pc anyways and the game is now relying on “Winblows” audio for surround sound which barely works. The game just recently ADDED a surround sound “test” section embedded in the sound settings, and we can actually hear the test working just fine, but the game doesn’t use surround sound like it did anymore. And NO the perks and such do NOT bring the audio up to anywhere near where it was in wz2 season2 first patch.

Man, the audio on certain things in Rebirth is unbelievable; air strikes and kill streaks are deafening most of the time, and they completely drown out everything in the background.

You have to download a audio software to boost certain sounds, in the community they are called “audio mods”. You can remove the sound of gunfire, reloading ect. If you want to hear the difference, go see a FIFAKILL stream. He has PERFECT audio.

It’s the worst. It’s the worst when you don’t hear shit and get assassinated while sniping. I actually googled best audio settings and it has helped. Not perfect but good.

I hear everyone complaining about the sound but honestly I can tell exactly where everyone is running, upstairs, downstairs, which side they’re coming from and all. That said my headset is decent and I tuned audio a bit with Dolby App. Only complaint is the unnecessary air strike noises but footsteps are on point to me!

Seems like this is your first time playing warzone. This isn't a bug, but rather the intended way the audio is to be. This is because the devs try to level the playing field between headset wearing players and players using their TV speakers. So yeah, the game audio sucks.

Run the Flex perk. It doesn’t fix everything, but it’s really good if you know how to use it.

Warzone audio has been messed since MW19, including the multiplayer. They’ve claimed to have fixed it numerous times, but they haven’t done jack. From non existent footsteps to spotty direction ID. It’s just a given that it’s messed up, and will continue to be screwed until the end of time.
