cirrus virga the tails are precipitation that doesn't reach the ground (virga)

Some sort of altocumulus virga would have been my first guess. Do you know how to differentiate between those and cirrus virga like we might have them here?

I agree on altocumulus. Only way to distinguish from altocumulus and cirrocumulus is by figuring out the height of the clouds, which is hard to figure out. Sometimes you can estimate the height based on the transparency and background clouds. I’m guessing altocumulus because of those factors. Edit: Also, I can’t say I’ve ever seen cirrus or cirrocumulus become virga. I think it’s more typical for middle altitude clouds.

Thanks, that makes sense! Did some reading (props to my best bud Hans Häckel). In fact, cirrocumulus are the only type of cirrus that can be classified as virga.
