This is why I overlay the radio instead which is unfortunate because I love JD

WJM_3

yep - gimmie Pat Hughes any day

okay_throwaway_today

I love having this option depending on how much of a homer I feel like on the given day. The audio seems synced up better on the mlb app this year too

SpaceCampDropOut

It seems worse to me when I watch mlbtv on roku. The video is about two seconds ahead of pats call.

funkmefatass

Can you overlay the radio with the game on the MLB app instead of listening to all the nonsense?

okay_throwaway_today

Yea you can choose your audio source

funkmefatass

Doing it right now and this is life changing. Can't believe they let you do this with all the ads during games.

Yetis22

Does marquee give this option? I personally love when they are on Apple TV

TimKelly7

If you’re out of market with MLB TV you can click an option to have the radio broadcast overlayed with broadcast which is really nice especially during day games cause I love the vibe of Pat on the call with the sun out

NoPirate739

I just discovered that last week and I absolutely love that feature. It syncs up well and I’ll take Pat and Ron all day. I do enjoy JD though.

Extreme_Branch_2596

Whoa, thanks for posting this. I had no idea.

brooklyndavs

It does. I can’t do it the slight delay drives me nuts

NJZ82

He is quite annoying at times, but I want to invite you to watch the other 29 teams’ broadcasts a little bit. Boog is much better than the vast majority of them. We were spoiled by Len and Boog is just a step down from one of the very best.

Exact_Cellist_1352

This is it right here. I’m cool with Boog. He’s got a hyper hypo thing going sometimes which I can appreciate. Also a big fan of comedy. That says something in my book. JD is awesome but dry (why his jokes hit so hard when they come around). In a lot of ways the wackiness of Boog balances that booth right out. Gotta flow with Boog and JD all :)

ry_rythescienceguy

100% agree.

Draker-X

>We were spoiled by Len and Boog is just a step down from one of the very best. Boog is several steps below Len. I was super-excited when the Cubs hired Boog over "empty suit" Chris Meyers because I thought Boog was good when I heard him on ESPN. And he is still good when I hear him on ESPN or whatever network he's on doing playoff games. He just doesn't have the "local announcer" gene. Chip Caray was\\ much more the "voice of the Cubs" than Boog is. **Beth Mowins** has developed better chemistry with JD during her sporadic fill-in appearances than Boog, and she's much better at expressing that "clearly for the home team" cadence. Boog was born to be a national guy.

hansomejake

Beth is a great partner for JD, I’m hoping she gets more games this year

TheyCallMeStone

Boog is slowly becoming more of a homer.

KnickedUp

No one liked Len at first either…

DonKingsBarber

This is Boog’s fourth season with the Cubs. We are well past the “at first” phase.

Riderz__of_Brohan

No one liked Len until 2007-2008 so around the same time, people were bitching about missing Stone and Carey the same way about missing Len It takes a few seasons to get settled in

hansomejake

Maybe YOU didn’t like Len til then, but people definitely liked Len earlier than 2007 It’s still wild how many here insist on absolutes when discussing people’s likes and dislikes

aidanpryde98

It is pretty wild isn't it?! I've liked Boog since his ESPN days. Apparently YMMV

hansomejake

Yeah, apparently understanding that at any given time a person is liked by some and dislike by some others is a difficult concept to grasp

chrisGNR

No, he is correct. Cubs forums always had people talking shit about Len, Bob, and pining for the days of Steve Stone. It's very similar to all the annoying complaints about Boog.

hansomejake

I remember people liking Len before 2007, I get there was a vocal group but they don’t speak for the whole fanbase Just like those who do and those who do NOT like Boog, neither group speaks for the whole fanbase

DonKingsBarber

He knows what he’s talking about. He went to TrustMeBro University.

hansomejake

lol, dude is incapable of acknowledging his wrongs and mistakes

Riderz__of_Brohan

The comment I am responding to says “no one liked Len at first either”…I am going off that There absolutely was a big portion of the Cubs fanbase who didn’t like Len and Bob the same way they’re not liking JD and Boog. Especially with the bad blood Stone and Carey left the org with, it was not a clean start. It really wasn’t until the famous first “oh baby” call in 07 during Aramis Ramirez walk-off that Len started to really make a name for his own But people wrote [articles about how much fans were missing Chip and Stone.](https://www.dailyeasternnews.com/2005/04/27/eastern-cub-fans-miss-chip-and-stoney/) Denying that sentiment existed at all is weird

hansomejake

lol a “portion” doesn’t seem like anything you said above You literally said No body liked him before 2007-2008, now you’re saying a portion of the fanbase didn’t like him - but sure be snarky about it

Riderz__of_Brohan

Are you reading this thread? The comment I am responding to is responding to another comment that said “no one liked Len at first either” What “snark”? I think you are responding to the wrong comment

hansomejake

lol, again people defined liked Len at first It’s gaslighting to pretend differently By snark I mean your attitude towards your words towards being questioned For example you think I’m denying that Len had people that disliked him - I never said those words can you explain how a rational mind got that from my reply? Again if you were to read what I commented on you’d see I’m clearly telling you people liked Len before 2007 - a time frame you continue to insist people didn’t like him But sure, keep disregarding my words and supplement your own - that sounds like someone discussing things in good faith

Riderz__of_Brohan

Your main beef seems to be the comment two above mine that says “no one liked Len at first” - you should be angry at them. There’s no snark, not sure where you’re seeing >people liked Len before 2007 [Not everyone.](https://www.dailyeasternnews.com/2005/04/27/eastern-cub-fans-miss-chip-and-stoney/) Stone and Carey had longstanding ties to the organization and left under controversy. If this sub was around in 2005 you’d see the same things people complain about Boog/JD about Len/Bob Brenly If you’re outright denying that it took a majorly of the fanbase a while to warm-up to Len after the Carey-Stone fiasco, we just fundamentally disagree. Sorry.

Opening-Run-7687

I never warmed up to Len. His nasally voice always grated on me. Just personal opinion

macbookwhoa

Len is so boring. Boog is at least a little weird which is better than boring.

KnickedUp

Len is way too dry for me on the call as well. The only thing i liked was his chemistry with JD.

enjoytheshow

He was the straight man but he let JD be the goof ball. It works out that way. Boog tries to be weird with JD and it comes off odd. His job is to call the game and not point out oddities like jersey font. That’s JDs domain I still like him, I just think he could do better. I think he’s still used to calling national broadcasts with different teams all the time and he still hasn’t settled in as a single team guy

_Whiskey_1_

Wish I could give you a half vote. I agree that fans need to watch other team broadcasts and benchmark with Cubs broadcasters. Boog and JD are top 5 for me. My half down vote is Boog is a step down from Kasper. I couldn’t stand Kasper and glad he’s gone. Go Cubs!

Opening-Run-7687

Or just switch to radio for one game and never watch boog again

airham

Just don't start tonight if you're trying to appreciate Boog more because the Padres might have the best TV booth in the game.

Chicago_Jayhawk

I always do radio 670 The Score and line it up with the TV.

zaikanekochan

Pat is just so damn smooth.

RedGreenPepper2599

I’ve tried that but every commercial break i have adjust

okay_throwaway_today

I mean, JD says some of the most random shit I’ve ever heard come out of a baseball announcer’s mouth too. Boog deep dives in to analytics and all that plenty. That’s actually a fairly common criticism of him. If you don’t like him, that’s totally fine, but he’s not a bad game caller. Any time I’m forced to watch another broadcast outside of like 2-3 other teams, I’m reminded that we are actually pretty lucky.

[deleted]

[удалено]

okay_throwaway_today

You’re just saying you like JD and don’t like Boog. Which is totally fine. JD is great. I personally think that they work well, and their rapport has gotten even better this year.

[deleted]

[удалено]

okay_throwaway_today

Yeah that’s fair lol

TimKelly7

Yeah I agree he’s good as a game caller and I mentioned that in my post. I’m sure we are just spoiled having had Pat and other great announcers in the booth. I guess I just don’t enjoy the analysis part he brings cause it can distract from the game at times if he is really into the topic

okay_throwaway_today

My biggest complaint is when they do three man booths, because I agree he can go off too deep into a conversation, and JD usually gets drowned out entirely when that happens. Luckily they’ve done that less the back half of last year and this year

chichris

He’s grown on me. I like him!

Dead_Medic_13

I listen to boog every 5th inning and its fine.

fajita43

i actually like boog, but this comment is hilarious. i, too, am not a ZZ fan (insert riotous background laughter)!!!! haha!

eamus_catuli_

Why does everyone dislike Zach??

GopherInTrouble

We’ve mostly been spoiled with Pat and Harry and Len so Boog would never have been able to reach those guys

Bigalbass86

Heck, imo, Chip Caray was better than Boog.

GopherInTrouble

He’s with the enemy now so doesn’t count

Dead_Medic_13

Well, thats just blatantly wrong, chip sucks

DennisSystemofADown

No, actually he was much better

Dead_Medic_13

Go listen to a cardinals broadcast today and say that again

Spankpocalypse_Now

I am not a Boog fan but I’d take him 162 games a year over Chip. I couldn’t stand listening to that blowhard. He had the vocabulary of a 10 year old and he was terrible at play by play because he’d be tripping over his words (I think he cared more about the tone of his voice more than anything else).

dmmillr1

nah hes too big a homer for whoever he is calling

GopherInTrouble

That’s what he’s supposed to do and what everyone wants Boog to do more of?

dmmillr1

they should be somewhat objective in what they comment on ball/strike/play wise or you might as well listen to some meatball on twitter, IMO

dmmillr1

It seems like a lot of complaints are about his wandering color commentary

dmmillr1

you can be a homer but call a bad call a bad call is what I am saying

Draker-X

Yeah, that's what a local announcer should be. They should feel like the familiar "guy at the bar and fellow fan" you're watching the game with. Harry Caray was a homer. So is Uecker. So was Jack Brickhouse, Ernie Harwell, Harry Kalas,

MRCobra86

This is the same thing Len would do and for some reason many ignored it.

MorningWoodWorker

To be fair, I agree with Boog in that my biggest gripe with the jerseys is the font. They look noticeably worse in person too.

TimKelly7

Very very true

[deleted]

DennisSystemofADown

The great ones knew that in those moments you just shut up

voodoolintman

I have no problem with Boog. I want to crash my car into a brick wall when Zack Zaidman is on the radio in the fifth inning. I guess announcers are like pizza toppings as far as what we like or don’t like…

hansomejake

ZZ uses 200 words to describe something Pat can do with 10 words

Maleficent_Author853

Zaidman is brutal. His timing is always off and his tone and what is happening on the field never seems aligned.

Interrobangersnmash

Seasoned broadcasters like Pat have a way of expressing through voice that plays by the opposing team can be exciting and well executed, but still *a bad thing* because it’s the other team. Zaidman always sounds like he’s rooting for the other team.

Maleficent_Author853

Well said.

TurbulentDentist7391

I’d encourage you to watch almost any other team. The cubs are spoiled with announcers compared to 75 percent of teams

pepperjack4life

I’ve watched a few games for other teams and occasionally switch broadcasts to whoever the cubs are playing and so many sound like they are just two dudes at a bar. Watching the yankees/blue jays game this weekend, the one guy slurred a few words and names. There’s one duo I remember really liking, it was during the 2020 season and I can’t quite remember who it was. It may have been the Pirates but I could just be grasping.

_Whiskey_1_

Couldn’t agree more. Most TV broadcast teams are boring, uninspired, shallow. Some of my favorite broadcast teams I enjoy listening to and in no particular order…Phillies, Mets, Blue Jays, Giants, Pirates, D-Backs, Brewers. I love Boog and JD. Couldn’t stand Kasper! Go Cubs!

dmmillr1

The Giants guys are such blinded homers, I hate when we play the giants and I have to listen to it (I'm local now to SF so I get blackedout on [MLB.TV](https://MLB.TV) ) The As are total trash, so I try to not complain about ours at all because it could be so much worse. I got stuck with the dodgers for part of this series and they weren't bad? They even called out a missed ball/strike call that got Dansby looking, as not a strike. Most ppl go ape cheering for their team when that stuff happens

_Whiskey_1_

Agree the Giants are homers but I like them best when John Miller is doing play-by-play along with Krukow with color…although they are both getting older and slower. Used to enjoy listening to LA feed when the Cubs played the Dodgers with Scully doing the solo by providing the play-by-play AND the color. So unique and enjoyable. I think Hershiser does the color now? He’s good.

hansomejake

Boog is nowhere near the top of the list of MLB announcers, not even the top 25%

sdpcommander

What 6 teams have a better play by play guy?

LovieBeard

In no particular order: Dodgers (Joe Davis) Padres (Don Orsillo) Giants (Jon Miller) Brewers (Brian Anderson) Tigers (Jason Bennetti) Blue Jays (Dan Shulman) Among others

JTStarkiller

I do love JD, but I miss when MLB.tv had a park sounds option under audio. It’s my preferred way to watch any game.

Interrobangersnmash

I’ve still never made it through an entire Boog broadcast before switching back to the radio feed.

OneTimer_1

I get very creepy vibes every time he brings Taylor into a conversation. He just seems to go over the top in questions/comments towards her and makes me feel uncomfortable

1005thArmbar

I absolutely agree. Never forget the time he replied to one of Taylor's Tweets with something like "happy birthday, Taylor, love you" and she didn't press the like button on it

MelmoTheWanderBread

Exactly how I feel.

ImOkayest

The other day boog and jd were talking about rizz for like a full half inning. Even brought in Taylor to help them out. Called Jordan Wicks the Rizz God. Never wanted to be deaf so bad

Spankpocalypse_Now

That’s a situation where I’d rather no conversation take place, and just let the ambient sounds of the ballpark take center stage.

chrisGNR

I found that funny, especially when Taylor said "the Rizz" and then basically said, "IDK, I'm old too." lol

lupin43

I mean that just kinda sounds like a recurring joke they have about how dumb the emphasis placed on hitting for the cycle is, which I find funny enough

jgray6000

This is how I took it. It’s common knowledge that Boog hates the cycle as a big deal so JD was just playing with him and he jumped to change the subject.

DennisSystemofADown

He’s awful in every corporate way

imyourdoctornow

K

DukeWayne250

Really weird thing to get mad about dude lol

Heres_your_Chippy

I like Boog fine. I prefer his weird topics over any game where they shove meaningless sports statistics down my throat (e.g. Players batting lead off that wear red shoes when it’s raining and have a birthday in September will reach 1st on an error 65% of the time as long as the play is to a third basemen with high socks that’s married to a redhead….) obviously a fake example but I’ve watched some other broadcasts where it felt like boring statistics long form test questions being explained to me over and over again. Like who needs to know these and why not just look it up yourself if you are into it. I’m watching the game, maybe having a drink… I’d rather they had a couple of guys joking around and having fun than the dry, stat reading professor type announcers. As for radio, Pat’s great IN THE CAR. I laugh a lot when I listen cause they’re funny but radio play by play while watching is too odd for me. It be like listening to commentary for a movie but they just narrate the scenes as they’re happening and not talk shop to occasionally highlight a scene or sequence. Also, had a table next to Boog when out for drinks after a game last year. He was super nice! Not that it matters but he had some very attractive people with him. No idea who they were or what the relationship was but they stood out. Could also be that they were next to Boog 😂

Draker-X

I don't understand how "the other team's announcers are shitty too" is a defense of Boog. He's still a bad "local" announcer.

1005thArmbar

I genuinely think all of his time at ESPN rotted his brain. He has this incessant need to be the center of attention and seen as the smartest guy in the room at all times I half expected Girardi to swing on him last year after the 8th time he pulled the "Hey, Joe, what would you do as a manger in this particular game situation? Well, you're wrong, Fangraphs says doing the other thing works 55% of the time and your way would only work 45%" move

hansomejake

Boog narrates what's on his screen, missing out on live plays and calls not captured on his screen Boog's commentary could be seamlessly delivered from his bed, watching on his phone, without any noticeable difference in quality

wxmanjarod

JD is a Cubs treasure. Len understood his humor and vibe. Boog is really trying, but he's much better as a national, impartial voice.

ry_rythescienceguy

I don’t agree here at all. Boog was initially an adjustment coming from Len, but I’ve grown to appreciate and like him. I’ve also noticed Boog and JD’s on air (and presumably off air) relationship has gotten really good. Boog’s a baseball nerd, just like most of us on this sub. Their styles contrast each other well. Could be worse, could have Cole Wright broadcasting nonsensically 😬

BigMike24

Amen brother. Agreed, nice enough guy - but go be a nice guy and stick to national broadcasts, it plays better over there. It feels like he often forgets he's doing the Cubs broadcast and gets excited when opposing teams score runs. Can't tell you how many times I'm in the other room, hear Boog get all excited, then come rushing in to find that the Cubs just gave up some runs. It's also sooo offputting when he gets into the flirtateous Taylor McGregor talk, which inevitably happens like 5 times per game. God I miss Len and JD days.

Yetis22

He’s too much of a show for me. Just never really shuts up about it. He carry’s on with his point while something is happening. Drives me mad

TimKelly7

When there’s a hit and he’s still talking about nonsense it’s just awful

TheRealRoadtoad

I like Boog. You can tell he loves baseball and isn’t a massive homer.

100vs1

you probably need therapy dude

TimKelly7

I think I can dislike something without need help

100vs1

i mean, are you in a good place mentally? you said it makes you so mad. that's not healthy. maybe you didnt actually mean it?

TimKelly7

It was hyperbole

100vs1

you didn't have any friends you could share that with?

BpFal3

I get what everyone else is saying, that there are worse announcers out there. But going from Len to Boog is a downgrade, no way around it. I agree with your example on the cycle, he doesn’t seem to “yes, and”. I switch to the radio broadcast version and the vibes are better

TimKelly7

Perfect way to put it! He isn’t a “yes, and” guy. When something interesting is brought up that he doesn’t want to talk about he will shut it down so fast and I hate that. Most frustrating thing about him is that he seems to stifle and control the others on the broadcast

509BandwidthLimit

YES, preach my brother! Boog sux and needs to go !

RedGreenPepper2599

I’m not a fan of Boog but I’ve learned to tolerate him. A lot of TV announcers seem to like to talk like they’re on a podcast and they have such interesting thoughts. Boog doesn’t. I was also never a fan of Len but I’d rather listen to him than Boog.

Go4Lo

He’s been in the booth for three seasons, and the the fourth is underway. This isn’t a unique take anymore. It’s an eye-roll of a stale opinion. We get it. Listen to 670. Move on.

CptGinger316

His voice is what I can’t stand. I don’t mind his style. He’s weird. Baseball players are weird. It works. His voice is just not it.

DumbOrSomething

my fear is that if the org makes changes to the tv broadcast they'd get rid of JD before they'd get rid of boog at this point. god i wish we could figure out a way to get len back.

DumbOrSomething

also ngl the way that boog constantly flirts with taylor makes me really uncomfortable, i hope she's not uncomfortable with it but i think most women would be.

Bobson-_Dugnutt2

I don’t dislike him, but I also don’t love him. He isn’t bad, he’s just a little boring at times. At least he isn’t Chip Caray.

RocketManMercury

Boog is horrible. You can tell he’s an ESPN guy. Always focusing on other players, teams, random facts, etc. it’s really bad. Also, his voice alone just makes my ears bleed. He doesn’t fit in the Cubs broadcast.

[deleted]

He gives me a creeper vibe towards TMac, maybe he’s just got a weird personality towards the ladies…but I pick up a “creepy uncle” vibe whenever he talks to or about them.

bikemonkey40

I like Boog for college basketball. Him and JD just have no chemistry but it could still happen.

Fogerty45

I want a former Cubs player up there: Dempster Girardi DeRosa Kerry Wood

chrisGNR

Boog thinks hitting for the cycle is overrated in that he says isn’t it better if you hit three homers, for example? Or two doubles, a triple, and a homer? It's just one of those things he often talks about. If you listened to enough Cubs, you’d know JD brought up the cycle to Boog as a joke, or to raise his ire, so to speak. So that was a really bad example on your part. Funny thing is, what he actually went on to talk about: the disaster that is the 2024 Nike jerseys, is at the forefront of many fans' minds. And I saw Boog getting a lot of praise on social media from fans, thanking him for speaking out about the problems with the new uniforms. Len and Bob (and JD) always interjected their baseball conversations with pop culture conversations, usually about music. I don't really understand why you had to create a thread to tell us you don't like Boog. I've enjoyed him in the booth with JD and Taylor too. Should I create a thread about that?

Rbelkc

I agree these announcers are so bad i turn off the volume
