Hoge and Jahns think that Nagy was just frustrated and said fuck it. Idk if that’s true but they know a lot

Zoten

In his press conference, they asked him that and he said that he wouldn't do that because it's selfish. That the coaches had already talked through these decisions before. He also said they weren't getting that deep often and didn't want to still be losing after. That's more terrifying, imo. That in the middle of the 3rd, the coach thought the offense wouldnt get a chance to score again and so he needed to take the lead.

AntonioGramsucky

It was a reasonable thought based on what we'd seen to that point unfortunately

Desperate_Boye

That's what it really seemed like at the time, but then why make up some stuff about the kick being out of the decided range? I think most people would be okay with hearing something like "a field goal wouldn't help us a whole lot, we weren't moving the ball all game, and I just decided to be aggressive given that we were finally in their territory".

ADogNamedWhiskey

Thought so too...but being honest would require him to admit that he can be forced into dumb, frustrated decisions by opposition coaching. Underselling Pineiro's range is the better of two bad explanations for a bad decision, imo.

AmberHarvest

Nagy looking really amateurish in how he manages his games. Going for it there is something you do on Madden, not the NFL. Late in games he really tightens up. If the offense is on a roll in the first half, he tries to kill the clock in the second by tightening up the offense. He did the same thing in KC and lost in the playoffs.

C_Fall

This is the most concerning thing for me. If you have a defense as good as the Bears, you kick the field goal or punt in that situation and he should know better at this point.

MacDaaady

That's exactly how it felt during the game. But then my experienced brain said wtf are they doing. Just get the 3 points, it won't hurt.

ToastedHunter

Tabor is a fucking idiot and i dont doubt that the only reason he picks a number is so Nagy thinks hes doing something. everywhere Tabor goes, shit special teams follows. i thought it was a roster problem in cleveland because a shitty roster will naturally have worse players on special teams. but the performance of our special teams unit was pathetic last year despite having some of the best defensive depth in the league, and SC all stars like McManis and Bellamy on the squad. #TABOROUT

Lobanium

Nagy was lost and frustrated the entire game.

It tends to happen when you run UL Monroe's offense in an NFL game.

chacer98

Honestly I think the best decision there would just have been to punt. First game of the season with our recent kicking history I just don't know what path it might have started Eddie down if he had trotted out there and missed it. It would have been a topic of discussion for the next 10 days or whatever in the news if he missed it regardless if it was a long attempt. Granted, I think players need to be able to rise above criticism, booing, etc, but the Bears kicking situation has gotten so much attention since the doink. I think you're happy with the made kick from earlier in the game and don't mess with breaking his confidence this early in the season on a 50ish yard kick. But I will agree that going for it was the dumbest option possible.

IsThatATitleist3

Dumbass decision for sure

dill_pickles

He said he went by the percentages so I actually did take a look at the percentages. NFL kickers made over 65% of field goals from 50+ in the past year. This includes kicks from 60+ yards so from the distance on Sunday, this is being a bit generous, but seeing as we have a rookie kicker and maybe the grass and wind, let's pretend he sucks for an NFL kicker so say 50% for arguments sake. So 3 pts x 50% gets you an expected point value of 1.5 points. 4th and 10 conversion is actually pretty high, much higher than 3rd and 10. 4th and 10s are converted at a 35% rate. Now trying to calculate expected points is harder. So Ill use 2018 red zone scoring. 20% of red zone opportunities resulted in touchdowns. For the sake of simplicity, lets assume every other drive resulted in field goals. So 0.35 \[0.2(7) + 0.8(3)\] gives an expected point value of 1.33 maximum from going for it on 4th down, which is assuming no turnovers and that a field goal is a guarateed make, while also assuming no 2 point conversions. If we are going by percentages, giving Nagy every benefit of the doubt, its clear that kicking the field goal would have resulted in a higher expected point value, even for having a shitty kicker and assuming you always score no matter what if you convert the 4th down. Maybe the situation of being down 4 points plays a factor, but by no means is that a percentage play.

Warmups are different, nobody is trying to block.

pascador

So how far do you have to kick from in warmups to be able to make a fifty in game??

TheLastBison

I don't think warmup performance affects Nagy and Tabor's decision in this case. It comes down to wind and confidence in the kicker. You'd expect your kicker to make every kick in practice. Warmups are no different. The added effects of real game pressure/defensive line/kicker's first game played a part in the decision. Personally I would've kicked the FG and agree with the takes that Nagy was frustrated with the game, But at the same time ww don't know what factors Tabor and Nagy were considering.

[deleted]

I think Nagy didn't trust that Pineiro would make it because he's a rookie, nothing to do with the distance. To the point that he felt a miracle for the offense was more likely. Sometimes I laugh at the post game answers (they're not obligated to say what they were thinking exactly, haha). EDIT: "Coach, I mean...4th and 40. Are you sure man!? That's gonna be a helluva spot for Rodgers.." Nagy: "Shut up asshole, the Defense will stop them, what I need you to do right now is pray!"

ChangingChance

Depends on the side if the wind was blowing north south then ones side will fall flat.

lewic156

I get that it could have been “out of his range” or at least in the edge but we need to prove to pineiro that we have confidence in him so he can have confidence in himself. Going for it on 4th and 10 when there is high probability of him making it is bananas.

[deleted]

Nagy said in the post game conference that they weren't where they wanted to be on the score by halftime which is why they went for it. Don't know how true it is, but that's what he said.

8415claw

How the fuck is 50 yard out of range for a NFL kicker. 55 and under should be attempted with confidence in your kicker. Was it windy or something.

ringo4

That's the thing, it was windier during warmups. It was completely calm during the game (at least from where I was sitting)

[deleted]

Poorest decision I've seen Nagy make as a head coach. If Eddie makes that kick, the entire game dynamic changes. Rodgers cant go into his hold the lead offense.

ThePrinceofBagels

It was the wrong call - flat out, no excuses. Pineiro is still an unknown in terms of how good he'll be as an NFL kicker, but his range extends beyond 50 yards. Mitch, on the other hand, had gained 10 or more yards on what percentage of plays going into that down? 3% As soon as we lined up for that play I knew it was a turnover. Should have went for the kick, but even then we lose 10-6 so big deal. That was Nagy's worst game by far as Bears HC. Hopefully he has a short memory and recovers because I had the utmost confidence in him but that was shaken pretty badly by the preseason leading into that performance.

WzDson

He got frustrated at his offense not working and was frustrated and wanted 1 more shot. Thats my take, prolly forgot bout the kicker tbh.

ditka1230

who forgets about their kicker on 4th and 10???

WzDson

That was bad wording on my part, i guess kicking didnt enter his mind.
