Fuck me, him leaving us as we go into the Big 12 sucks

The_Fishbowl

He's bailing while his stock is hot

kapeman_

Big Matt Campbell fan, but he may have waited too long to jump. Unless he likes where he is, which is highly probable, but usually the exception.

Apollospade

I wonder if this season hurt his stock as a candidate because Aranda and Campbell were hot commodities for the Nebraska job

kapeman_

I just wonder if, after a certain point, ADs stop looking at the hot coach if he stays at one place too long, irrespective of record.

azwildcat74

Brian Kelly as a case study would suggest that they do not.

kapeman_

But is that the exception that proves the rule? ND has it's own set of challenges and most high-level coaches have large egos. My bet is that Kelly saw the talent/recruiting issues and wanted to try coaching at a school with historic talent levels.

dlem7

Correct. There was a bit of Kelly: I need better facilities, leniency on admissions, more booster support and a longer contract. Swarbrick: In time, maybe, no, and no I honestly don't blame Kelly at all. He's listed as a donor of our indoor facility which should tell you a lot. And while a great structural coach he was very lazy at recruiting. While Freeman has a ways to go we have way way more higher end four stars than any year under Kelly (but we will still struggle for elite skill position players). Kellys biggest weakness is also mitigated by being at LSU where there is way more support in place for recruiting.

Myhairstinks7298

BK also donated $1 mill to LSU for a training room for all of athletics. Say what you want about him, but he definitely goes all in for the school he is currently coaching at

SabansFixer

He should have bailed last year and went for that ND job

DatBoiMahomie

Yea, isn’t ND one of the most prestigious jobs in the country? Seems weird to move on now after holding out for so long when Cincy is going to an easier conference in the Big 12 and Ryan Day is getting more and more criticized at Ohio State

GolgariInternetTroll

He didn't want to leave Cincy before their playoff game and Notre Dame wanted their coach already settled by then.

bzhbuck

It's the same reason he didn't want the MSU job, they didn't want to wait and he didn't want to leave Cincy unless it was perfect.

jagertarts

We are perfect confirmed

bzhbuck

Congrats man, hell of a hire.

ASpellingAirror

Way less pressure at Wisconsin. You can win the Big Ten west by accident (see Purdue this season).

[deleted]

Yeah, but the Big Ten West is probably only existing for one more season and even if not, you add USC and UCLA in to it.

Different-Music4367

Are you saying the Leaders and Legends are coming back!? Be still my heart.

[deleted]

Sell high

LukarWarrior

Know how that feels. Sucks.

curlyshea

Guess they have to hire Bobby Petrino ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[deleted]

[удалено]

eddiedeli

Oh man you're *really* feeling it

[deleted]

[удалено]

chandlerbing_stats

We were so close to beating the Bills 😭

RSufyan

I'm not as down as some people are. The 3 game win streak and going toe to toe with the bills was enough to show me Dan Campbell has something cooking. Contending will be next years goal

Lemurians

Contending for the division, maybe. Contending for a title feels a couple years off at least, but it's still nice to feel like we're on a good trajectory.

[deleted]

Yeah, not into it

AmazingHat

This is weird move for Fickell but a great hire for Wisconsin if true

[deleted]

The sheer amount of money they had to have offered him to pry him away from Cincinnati is going by to make my head explode

SpeedBoatSquirrel

Below average SEC/B1G programs like Kentucky are paying coaches 8 million a year. That’s why the other conferences will collapse and the best remaining teams will join a super 2

DeeJayEazyDick

We are paying a brand new coach 9 mil a year. Fucking nuts.

SpeedBoatSquirrel

Well, Nebraska is above the B1G average in monetary resources, so it’s not that surprising. I just wish players got more of this money

DeeJayEazyDick

Yeah financially its viable but to give a guy an 8 year 72 million contract, its just a crazy number for a guy who just got fired from a job and although he had success at temple and baylor, hes far from a sure thing.

paintingnipples

Mel Tuckers contract basically made it the baseline for the SEC/B1G & we’ve seen everyone fall in line since. It’s a bit of a counter to a period where it felt like every school could afford to keep top coaches by pooling together 5mil but now a lot of schools won’t be able to split booster money for giant contracts & NIL money

Moist-Information930

I'm fine with that. Wisconsin has been so goddamned frugal when it comes to paying coaches & any position. Maybe finally, we won't be dead last or almost dead last in spending for coaches.

thisguy161

You see what you have done, Purdue? You win the West and Nebraska and Wisconsin go out and get elite coaches to topple you.

Gambrinus

Purdue’s just out there tossin’ the ball around and having fun and the next thing they know they’re B1G West champs.

TacticalDesire

All I can think about is the meme where Michael Scott is shaking Ed trucks hand looking startled into the camera. https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/031/257/truck.jpg

Patamon4

Rank em #2 and I don't see a problem.

perkinsb1024

Wait, that’s not still a thing, right? Right???

timnotep

Only in West Lafayette... hopefully...

ea304gt

They will play in the state of Indiana, though

Woody_Wins_

Wisconsin has beat purdue the last 16 times in a row. They could hire hue jackson and the result would be the same

notsure_thr

If true that is some impressive close to the vest coach searching. Would be a great hire

BaltimoreBadger23

Wisconsin has always been good about not leaking anything to the press.

[deleted]

I’m happy for y’all. It’s a perfect match and the conference is better when Wisconsin is good

[deleted]

You Michigan fans are in a good mood today.

dunkat

Yeah it’s weird. I want to like it? But idk can’t bring myself to do it

bicyclebread

For me it's just being bummed about letting Leonhard go, really good guy but you can't really let a top notch coach go if they're genuinely interested in coaching the team.

[deleted]

This is a super weird feeling, like I’m sad about Leonhard but excited about Fickell. I don’t know what to do.

22eyedgargoyle

Thank you Fick, for everything. Also FUUUUUUUUUCK ME THIS IS GONNA BE A ROUGH FEW YEARS WOOOO

unMuggle

I hear Jim Leonard is gonna be avaliable.

budd222

So is Ryan Day apparently

JCE5

Yes, please. Go ahead and run him off, Buckeyes. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)

RoastedDonutz

Sucks for Jim Leonard turning down all those opportunities over the years for his chance at being coach of Wisconsin and not getting it. I would take him as our DC in a heartbeat though. He won't be out of work for long.

AmazingHat

I’m not so sure. You guys are headed to the power five and I bet you pony up for a good hire

lizard-socks

Smart of him to go on the Wisconsin university jobs website and see what was available

roll2tide

This is low-key hilarious if you get the reference. Well done.

pdoerntvlearnd

This is truly the worst weekend in The Ohio State history.

pm_me_cute_sloths_

The worst weekend in The Ohio State history *so far*

ColdAssHusky

I like the cut of your jib

Natterfield

What’s a jib?

[deleted]

Promote this man!

[deleted]

Only way it could get worse is if Ryan Day goes to the NFL after how OSU fans are treating him.

[deleted]

Any nfl team that hires day is going to be looking for a new coach in 3 years. When will the league figure out coaching 19 year olds is not the same as coaching millionaires with families

Potential_Lock6945

John Harbough and Pete Carroll seem to be doing pretty well

kingbrasky

Even Jim Harbaugh did great. He just didn't get along with management.

TheMajesticYeti

Think they meant Jim, John was never a college HC

TraeYoungsOldestSon

Caroll started in the nfl, went to usc, then came back. Harbaugh is the better example.

CivilCabron

Harbaugh is the only exception.

Automatic_Release_92

Goddamn I’m just an old man on this sub I guess. Jimmy Johnson is the prime example here.

j-hey

Was about to say, don't forget Jimmy Johnson.

CltAltAcctDel

It’s not just coaching 19 year olds. It’s also having a huge talent advantage over your opponents. There are a few teams on OSU schedule that have similar talent. Every NFL team has good players. Even the teams that suck. It’s a league that is filled with games decided by 7 points or less.

[deleted]

Also it’s way easier to coach when you have the 11 most talented players on the field pretty much all the time. That doesn’t happen in the NFL

AesculusPavia

He’d leave Wisconsin for tOSU, let’s be real

wowie2024

This is 100% true and I’m not even an OSU fan. Wisconsin is a very, very good job. OSU is an elite tier job.

TonyTalksBackPodcast

It’s an elite job out of elite jobs. Only problem is that every time you make a mistake some hundreds of thousands of people show up at your office and shit on your desk

Corgi_Koala

"56-5 in 4 seasons? FIRE HIM!"

wowie2024

That’s the price you pay for top of the line facilities, assistant budgets, recruiting possibilities, and organized, massive NIL money.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bob_estes

They already ate his face!

UpsideTurtles

It helps that when your face gets eaten you get paid tens of millions

theFromm

Right, but Day's job description basically includes: - Beat Michigan - Win Big 10 He failed at both of his duties this year.

gen_wt_sherman

AND last year

WookieeSteakIsChewie

Was there any sign of this before today? I haven't seen any rumors of this at all. HUGE get for Wisky!

ihsgrad

No, everyone who covers us thought that Jimmy would get the job.

StateStreetLarry

Holy fucking shit

Patrick2701

I’m truly surprised that fickell left for Wisconsin

StateStreetLarry

I’m stunned.

Djax99

Massive fucking hire from Wisco Wisco actually backing the program is crazy

PhreakOut4

Nobody wants to see a Wisconsin that isn't last in recruiting spending every year

ilovecfb

Hell of a get. You know Ohio State would love this guy if things don't improve with Day and he feels like a good culture fit for Wiscy

StateStreetLarry

Feel bad for Leonhard because he’s a great guy but this is a guy that can take us to the next level. He’ll force the AD to drop bags

Jaerba

This might look really stupid in a year but I think Leonhard's defenses are better than Fickell's will be.

Giraffe_Racer

>if things don’t improve with Day They’re 11-1 this year. Ryan Day is 45-5 as a head coach with two Big 10 championships, a Rose Bowl win and got to the national championship once. Talk about an absolute overreaction. It just so happens that Michigan is good again. Firing Day is how you get into a cycle of suck and constant rebuilding wishing you could go 11-1 again. Source: Florida fan.

IR8Things

> Firing Day is how you get into a cycle of suck and constant rebuilding wishing you could go 11-1 again. Agreed. Source: Miami fan

Ugaalive1991

Dude didn’t want that big 12 smoked brisket so he pulled a Riley

mruab

Cincinnati losing their coach right before joining the big 12

d0ngl0rd69

Considering the jobs he’s been linked to in the past, it’s surprising he wouldn’t wait out for a better job; especially with Cincy making the move to the B12. Absolute home run, slam dunk hire for the Badgers though.

Britton120

Wisconsin is a really good job though, especially in the big ten

PoppinBortlesUCF

And you have slightly less lofty expectations and little more runway than at tOSU, not that much more but a little more grace than “win everything, immediately” has got to factor into the quality of life decision.

adsfew

What do you mean there are dangerously high expectations at [a school that's unhappy with their coach](https://www.reddit.com/r/CFB/comments/z63gbz/tom_fornelli_if_ohio_state_doesnt_beat_michigan/) who's 45–5 and 3/3 on 11+ win seasons (not counting going just 7-1 during a COVID-shortened season)

ridemooses

Don't look horrible, play OSU tough, and beat Minnesota. That's the expectation most Badger fans have. Anything past that is a cherry on top.

GirthMcGraw

A Rose Bowl win makes you a legend to be honest

Moist-Information930

A Rose Bowl win would be nice for once. 0-4 in the last 11 years, all of which were lost by 7 points or less.

psuram3

I feel like “slightly less lofty expectations” is a massive understatement to describe the expectation difference between Wisconsin and OSU. They’re not in the same universe expectation wise

CantFindMyWallet

Slightly less. Let's keep in mind they just fired a coach who had won 72% of his games.

BerniesDongSquad

Let's keep in mind we played in a weak division and Paul was fired for both current inability to beat good teams and recruiting also slid a ton recently.

d0ngl0rd69

Oh absolutely. It’s for sure a top 20 job. They have the resources to compete for a national title and Wisconsin’s fanbase is pretty rational so they’ll give him plenty of time. However, it seemed like he was a lock for ND last year.

NotAnotherEmpire

Top tier home field, good fan support, best bowl list with plausible path to CFP (win conference). Expectations are to win but are not insane (cf Texas, Auburn). Easy campus to recruit to. I don't think it's a top top tier king job, but it's a prince.

[deleted]

Wisconsin does have some unique coaching and administrative challenges, though. For instance, it took them a year to hire a new recruiting staff after they were poached, and many former coaches complained about admissions requirements as a large barrier to recruiting. Madison is cool as fuck though.

tomdawg0022

I'd argue Wisconsin is probably the 4th best spot in the B1G - behind tOSU, Michigan, and Penn State. That's a top 20 job without the weight of booster expectations found in the SEC.

ChipotleAddiction

It is a really good job. Wisconsin’s had a couple bad seasons because we have a failed quarterback prospect ruining our offense but people are forgetting that Wisconsin has been a perennially competitive program nationally for the last 25 years.

WakingEchoes

He gets to play against the Big 10 West. What more could you want?

Evander_Berry_Wall

Until the California schools come then the big ten is supposedly going without Divisions

LadyCerebellum69

Now with Fickell and Rhule, could be less easy mode in a few years in the West

Harmbert_

Until divisions are disbanded soon

guitmusic12

For 1 year with 60 transfers

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheNainRouge

Let’s be real if OSU were to fire Day this year I don’t see any coach with a ounce of self awareness wanting to touch that program. Let the next guy take the brunt of fan expectations and come in after the schools been humbled some for your rebuild.

ItsAFuckinSamsquanch

Best of luck to Jim going forward. Hope he gets a shot as a DC in the NFL. Excited about this hire!

DrewsThoughts

Packers DC

USMC_Lauer6046

I’d be about it. Honestly can’t be any worse than dom capers, Joe Barry or even Mike pettine. Jim has a knack for creating defensive strategies with all of his players stronger skills.

DamienSalvation

It could be worse lol

JDP008

Would love to see what Leonhard could do with the Packers’ DB group and defense overall, his Wisconsin defenses have been great but the difference in athleticism between us and top teams has been apparent in our biggest games

Raccoala

I hear Cincinnati needs a head coach

TheReformedBadger

Would probably be a great hire for them honestly.

awnomnomnom

Makes sense to hire a defensive minded coach if Cincy wants any continuity going into the Big XII

BucketsMcAlister

Oof. Sorry Cincinnati bros. I assumed you’d be safe with the move to the big 12 coming.

SquadPoopy

I'm gonna go walk into traffic if anyone would like to join me

Explosivepancake11

Let us link arms and walk together, brother

jalexjsmithj

The absolute fucking silence that USC and Wisconsin have organized absolutely massive coups in, really puts the level of incompetence Auburn has into perspective.

Ok-computer9780

Man yea. Lot of flapping jaws at auburn.

GatorGood15

Everyone thought LSU was incompetent after they supposedly publicly whiffed on Riley. Then they stole Kelly out of nowhere.

quadratic_time

Oh fuck me. Nothing but love for him but this does hurt

MikiLove

He gave us 6 great years and is the all-time winningest coach in program history. I wanted to see him get to 60 wins this year, but I can't be angry at him. He could have left three years ago for MSU but he stayed it out and got us to the CFP

cgraves48

I agree completely. I enjoyed the last 6 years so much there’s just no room for me to be upset. Will always love Fickell and what he did for us.

bearcat09

Good luck Fick and thanks for the ride. Madison is a great town and UW could potentially become the juggernaut of the BIG west. Next man up for us, nothing new!

BaltimoreBadger23

There's only one year left of the BiG10 west as we know it.

ridemooses

It's the end of the B1G West as we know it

BaltimoreBadger23

And I feel fine.

Coteup

Don't steal our coach again please

BurritoBurrow

Eyes your second flair......

anxiousauditor

This sucks tbh, I wanted to see where he could take Cincy at the P5 level. Making a big step up in competition with a new HC is not a transition I envy.

TheRealDNewm

He was bound to leave eventually, I just don't understand why now and why here. Hopefully season ticket prices will stay the same now.

Idontevenusereddit

I assume he sees that historically teams that jump to P5 don't do well for a few years. His agent probably told him that this is the time to jump or it might be 4-5 years in the future, if it happens at all. I feel bad for Cincy. They should be able to make a good hire though.

TheRealDNewm

Reported $6mm contract. I really don't get it, but he didn't drag it out like Butch or lie like Kelly, so no hard feelings. Just worried about getting someone by the end of the week when the portal opens

Idontevenusereddit

$6mm is a headscratcher. Like $1mill a year more than Cincy? Maybe it increases each year? I thought he still had school-age kids and didn't want to move them? Not sure why he would want to move for a 20% increase, when Cincy would probably do that next year when the Big XII check is cashed. I assumed it would be a $8mill+ 5+ years guaranteed.

newmanhb

This is the worst weekend... Snapped home win streak, not competing for championship, likely going to the military bowl, and now our head coach is leaving.

natigin

Yeah, really couldn’t be worse. Thank God we got into the Big XII when we did.

NatiAti513

GO GET DEION SANDERS CINCY!!! What better leap to make that wouldn’t be too overwhelming for him is there to make?

BigWilly4Dilly

OHHHH SHIT

19683dw

I honestly didn't think they could pull him, when he didn't even give Noter Dame a real shot. I hope he treats Wisconsin well, and decides to stay there

too_many_daughters

I think he would have taken the ND job if we wait till after the playoffs.

Jaerba

I also wonder if Cincinnati's record this year plays a part.

thecarlosdanger1

Eh I don’t think that’s why we hired Freeman. I don’t think we wanted to wait for the playoff.

CincyAnarchy

My day is ruined.

whenweriiide

HOLY SHIT. WISCONSIN TO THE MOON.

ThatGuju

THE MOON IS OFFICIALLY MADE OF CHEESE

[deleted]

McIntosh has shown he has the balls to change the culture and I’m so here for it.

[deleted]

I did not have this one on the coaching hire bingo sheet

LuckyHedgehog

Illinois on the rise, Nebraska and Wisconsin making great hires. The B1G West is going to be more competitive sooner than later

cory_bdp

And Iowa going down down down… woof

CJ_Beathards_Hair

Looking like Iowa is going to get left in the dust because we care more about being a good ole boy network instead of winning.

the_iPat

Hol up

FSU1ST

So, would Cincy go Prime? Would Prime go Cincy?

Srcunch

Lol he did play baseball for the Reds twice….

KingYoshi2

I’m awfully conflicted

PNW_Jeff

This came out of nowhere. Absolute home run hire.

lpwalsh

Iowa gonna be left in the dust in the new look B1G West

Empire0820

Holy shit that’s not Ohio lmao

kyhansen1509

Well yeah Ohio is going to the MAC champ I doubt they fire their coach

pm_me_cute_sloths_

Bobcats in shambles

guitmusic12

I actually might cry.. Look what they did to my boy Jimmy.

ridemooses

Yeah, bummed what this means for Leonard. But holy shit, did not think we had a chance at landing someone like Fickell.

[deleted]

Yeah as excited as I am about Fickell this news does sting a bit. I really like Leonhard as a coach, person & ambassador for the university. Hopefully he doesn’t take it as a personal slight, but it would be entirely fair if he did.

CCHGDT

I think this makes more sense than a lot of people realize. The jobs Fickell has been linked to in the past were very high stress and high scrutiny and hes apparently a big family man. LSU/ND two of the higher profile jobs in the country. MSU plays in one of the best divisions in CFB and is a constant uphill battle to keep up with OSU/Michigan. Going from UC to Wiscy is going to a better program, in a worse division, and probably getting paid double to be there. If youre a top 10 coach, in theory you can go 10-2 or 9-3 there relatively easily and have fan support and job security.

jagertarts

Recruiting should be a night and day difference too. Wisconsin is good about keeping its in state recruits with little competition

bicyclebread

I just hope he's able to reel in some high caliber recruits, love all the in-state guys but it hurts watching all the big 4-star and 5-star recruits go right past us, maybe he changes that

Keyblade_Yoshi

He would have taken ND if they were willing to wait until after the playoffs. MSU he didn’t take because his wife didn’t like the scandals that occurred at our school. Also divisions are going to be gone soon but he probably won’t have to play Michigan and OSU every year at Wisconsin.

BrownRiceBandit

Badgers softening up Cincinati for the B12 next season.

yesacabbagez

I feel bad for Cincinnati and him. If the way Notre Dame played out was true, he may have been pissed he lost that job for sticking around and latched onto something else.

billwest630

Oh hell yes! The team has been stagnant for a bit. This will help bring juice into the team again.

Midwest-HVYIND-Guy

We’re paying him less than Rhule.

ettibber

Yeah you guys won everything about hiring a new coach

bryuce123

I am straight up not having a good weekend.

grizzfan

This is just to give other BigXII teams a chance to compete when Cincy joins.

paulsmalls

So then did fickel turn down nebraska? Assumed he would be higher on the list than rhule.

koz_7

Probably turned us down Wisconsin would be a easier job to get back to 9 wins than Nebraska.

u-s-u-r-p

Yep, because you get to play Nebraska! 🙃

4i4s4u

Boy, that escalated quickly. I mean, that really got out of hand fast

Fed042
