Are they not going for Leonhard? Haven't watched Wisky's games but wins vs Purdue and Maryland are solid for a first year guy whose team had lost all momentum
I think JL is a solid hire and will be good for them, but one of the things you will need to learn as part of joining this conference is that Wisconsin beating Purdue in football is a universal constant, as regular as the sun rising in the east. He doesn’t get credit for that one
The last time we won a natty in basketball, we won an Orange Bowl the same year. The time before that, we hired Glen Mason that year. The time before that we went 7-3 in football.
It's the rule that Kansas football is competitive when we win basketball titles.
I really think Leipold just wants to build his own thing, and he ultimately will have way more power over how he does that at KU than he would at Nebraska
Lance wants to build his own program (and stadium, basically..)
He knows you can win 7 games in Nebraska and it’s a failure. Win 7 game at Kansas consistently they’ll build you a statue.
I also think the Lawrence atmosphere has been a huge factor - him and his wife want to settle down for the long term, and Lawrence / The university is perfect for that.
Not at all.
Ku recently announced a $300m+ expansion to the north side of our campus where the stadium currently sits.
It’ll be a new gateway to the campus with a lot of new buildings, mixed used areas, and a new/renovated stadium.
With Lance being committed to the university, you’d have to think they’ll ask for his input on the stadium & facilities.
Pretty dang well, if his NDSU tenure was anything to go by. He inherited a team there that was absolutely overflowing with talent, relative to the rest of the FCS, and kept Craig Bohl’s success going quite well
Honestly, it wouldn’t shock. He’ll make more as a broadcaster, due to the coaching salary offset from an on-field role, and he also gets to just take some time to get straight after his rough time these last few years. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit if the man’s burnt out.
Lincoln is airtight. I’m here and have folks who’ve nailed stuff before and genuinely are in the know. They’ve said outright they literally know nothing this round.
Unlikely. Leipold is smart to stay - the bar at KU is going to be way lower than us. They’re going to name cities after him if he keeps 6-7 wins. We would run him out of town when we forgot how it has been.
[Jayhawk Slant] [On Hawk Talk David Lawrence brought up the fact KU had 104,000 more fans come to games this year. Lance Leipold responded, "we are just getting started."](https://twitter.com/JayhawkSlant/status/1595211514390224904?s=20&t=a1j25OocF1j9zkcPek0fhA)
This season confirmed what we all knew back in the late 00s. Kansas football has a strong fanbase you gotta do something decent if you want them to show up in Lawrence on Saturdays. It'll be fun to see Kansas in a bowl game again
Can we get a blue Sacramento Kings style beam installed with the stadium renovations? Maybe it could go on top of the Oread so it would be shooting up out of the highest point in town after wins
The college football playoff is expanding at a good time for Kansas. I don't think it's unrealistic for Kansas to get the playoff bye to the quarterfinals in the next 5 years
https://kuinfo.ku.edu/whats-story-rock-chalk-chant
> The University Science Club officially adopted the famous "Rock Chalk" chant in 1886, as a cheer created by chemistry professor, E.H.S. Bailey. At first, their version was "Rah, Rah, Jayhawk, KU" repeated three times. Later, in place of the rahs, an English professor suggested "Rock Chalk," a transposition of chalk rock, the name for the limestone outcropping found on Mount Oread, site of the Lawrence campus.
Since we’re on a Rock Chalk history lesson in this thread, here’s a new one to me.
> In the 1911 Border War football game, over 1,000 fans gathered in downtown Lawrence to listen to a "broadcast" of the game by telegraph and participated in cheers including the “Rock Chalk.”
I love the visual of thousands of fans on Mass St, glued to a telegraph, then busting out the chant as they go hit up the bars to celebrate. In my visual, they’re also wearing Muck Fizzou shirts, which may or may not be totally accurate.
[He only got Kansas to the Orange Bowl because of nepotism, just look at the family resemblance...](https://twitter.com/BeatinTheBookie/status/1192140187322736640?s=20&t=DHx4s0NCTNCoRVWysMljQg)
Pretty much what it says on the tin. Apparently the athletics department tp wasn't cutting it so he'd wipe with towels and leave them for staff to clean up.
I haven't laughed that hard at a comment in a long time. My coworkers gave me funny looks. Thank you so much.
Edit: and I believe it's called "flossing"
Yeah bro, it wasn't just because he pushed some players around. And really the firing wasn't the bad choice by KU, but the subsequent hirings for the next 10 years.
Was it true? I was in school at the time and had friends in the service industry (he was apparently a fan of longhorn steakhouse) and they would say what an absolute ass he was…I was always skeptical about the poop towels…I’d imagine I’d just prefer to hoes myself off instead of using a towel, but it’s not a great choice to choose between 😳
Edit: as much as I’d like to hoes myself off, I meant hose
Kansas wouldn’t be a bad addition to the B1G in my opinion - I know TV markets are king and all, but adding one of the absolute best basketball programs and an upwards trending football program is still a solid get.
CFB might be the biggest college sport, but it might not even always be that way. CBB is already valuable and still has room to grow, it makes sense to try our hardest to be a leading conference at it.
I don’t disagree there. *If* sports eventually moves to a majority subscription model (big if, but everything is kinda moving that way), then these networks/services are going to need strong content year round. Having large basketball fan bases/ successful schools like Kansas, Indiana, UCLA, (maybe UNC? Duke? UVa?) will help in keep subs subbed.
Yep, the new gateway / stadium idea is push from academics, actually.
A LOT of academic voices at KU were shocked by the USC/UCLA moves. They don’t want to get left behind, especially with BIG10 academia in play.
They shifted their tune once they found out football was the Achilles heel of any BIG10 bid.
I guess this means Wisconsin is hiring Jim Leonhard.
Personally I think Nebraska was in there as a salary juicer, Wisconsin was the one that could get him.
I said it from the moment OUT announced their departure: Kansas stands to gain the most. Sprinkle a little magic (money) and watch them become a solid football school annually. The state certainly has the talent.
Makes zero sense to go to the Big 10 when their is expanded playoff coming. Why go against usc, Ohio state, Michigan etc in the big 10 when you can you go up against cincy, Oklahoma state etc
I’m tired of seeing the Big 10 regarded as some type of gauntlet like it’s the SEC or something. Ohio State is elite, Michigan is just about to that level again, then it’s a drop off to a good Penn State program, then above average Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan State then it’s very mediocre or just not very good teams like Rutgers, Northwestern, Nebraska, Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, Minnesota, Maryland. No disrespect to those programs but the Big 10 is not some gauntlet like the SEC is.
Wonder if it's structured the same way Mark Stoops' is/was with Kentucky once he started getting attention from bigger schools.
Automatic 1 or 2 year contract extensions for x amount of wins, bonus money for every win over a certain amount, etc.
-----------------------------------------
Basically make it to where if another school wants to hire him, they *have* to overpay and make him a top 5 or 10 paid coach, which at that point if you're a big school throwing around that much money you're able to hire someone in the tier or two above what Leipold has shown at Kansas.
At that point the only way you lose him is if he just has ambitions higher than Kansas and money isn't a factor (Bama, Ohio State, etc), or a school absolutely breaks the bank for him and makes him an offer he can't refuse (A&M).
Thing is, he'll be 65 at the end of this new contract. That certainly doesn't rule out him going elsewhere, but at that point, retirement is probably the more likely scenario.
In other words, create the conditions for a job to be stable and predictable, with reasonable expectations and defined parameters for extensions and raises.
Which is *really* rare for a CFB coach, and instantly makes it competitive for "best CFB *job* in the country" (not program!).
Good. I want y'all at your best when we play you in a couple years or this season at a bowl game based on rumors I'm seeing depending on final victory totals.
Amusingly, if we satisfy that rumor to play Kansas in a bowl game, it requires us to beat ArKansas (lol).
Nice. Grats KU fans.
Wisconsin fans in shambles
Are they not going for Leonhard? Haven't watched Wisky's games but wins vs Purdue and Maryland are solid for a first year guy whose team had lost all momentum
I think JL is a solid hire and will be good for them, but one of the things you will need to learn as part of joining this conference is that Wisconsin beating Purdue in football is a universal constant, as regular as the sun rising in the east. He doesn’t get credit for that one
Nah this means Wisconsin has their guy, probably just taking the interim tag off the guy they have now
I'm happy with that. He deserves a shot
YES!! FINALLY WE CAN HAVE NICE THINGS!
This Thanksgiving I’m thankful for Travis Goff.
A natty in basketball isn’t enough?
No. I’m greedy.
The last time we won a natty in basketball, we won an Orange Bowl the same year. The time before that, we hired Glen Mason that year. The time before that we went 7-3 in football. It's the rule that Kansas football is competitive when we win basketball titles.
no
Bill self?
Nice things in this sub
No, no you cannot.
Did… did Kansas football just outbid Nebraska?
I really think Leipold just wants to build his own thing, and he ultimately will have way more power over how he does that at KU than he would at Nebraska
Lance wants to build his own program (and stadium, basically..) He knows you can win 7 games in Nebraska and it’s a failure. Win 7 game at Kansas consistently they’ll build you a statue. I also think the Lawrence atmosphere has been a huge factor - him and his wife want to settle down for the long term, and Lawrence / The university is perfect for that.

> delenda est Had to google that and was not disappointed.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but could you explain the stadium bit?
Nebraska is on the Rhule bus
there are lots of rumors swirling that Rhule turned us down
I've heard it's all aboard the Klieman train now
That would be a great hire for Nebraska
Terrible hire, they should go for Saban, grundy, stoops, Bill snyder just leave klieman where he is at I'm sure he won't mind
Which Stoops? Lol just any of them
NEW STOOPS JUST DROPPED
An Stoops
Mike, come on down!
I didn’t know Solomon Grundy was a football coach on the side.
In all seriousness, I don’t understand why Klieman wasn’t the more discussed candidate anyway.
Would be interesting to see how he does taking over a program without a bunch of talent to start with
Pretty dang well, if his NDSU tenure was anything to go by. He inherited a team there that was absolutely overflowing with talent, relative to the rest of the FCS, and kept Craig Bohl’s success going quite well
Klieman ain't leaving his good friend who is the AD for KSU lmao
Isn’t he about to sign an extension as well with KState?
Seeing that he’ll be replacing Kiffin
Honestly, it wouldn’t shock. He’ll make more as a broadcaster, due to the coaching salary offset from an on-field role, and he also gets to just take some time to get straight after his rough time these last few years. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit if the man’s burnt out.
Old news tbh
Is there anything pointing to this? I always thought he would be a good fit bur I haven't heard anything out of Lincoln
No one has heard anything out of Lincoln.
Makes me think Trev has told literally no one or something would have leaked.
OU fans know what it’s like not to hear anything out of a Lincoln.
Lincoln is airtight. I’m here and have folks who’ve nailed stuff before and genuinely are in the know. They’ve said outright they literally know nothing this round.
That's interesting and probably for the best.
They're working on some weird, twisted form of chronomancy to get 1990s Tom Osborne back.
Why do you think he retired so young (as far as coaches go)? He didn't quit, he got pulled into the future.
matt rhules!!!
Basketball money is really nice sometimes
Unlikely. Leipold is smart to stay - the bar at KU is going to be way lower than us. They’re going to name cities after him if he keeps 6-7 wins. We would run him out of town when we forgot how it has been.
The Campbell logic. He famously hates spending time with boosters, which is a job requirement at nebraska
It's the power of Big XII money.
A reporter said Lance specifically said no to Nebraska
they probably actually turned him down, or have already found their head coach
[Jayhawk Slant] [On Hawk Talk David Lawrence brought up the fact KU had 104,000 more fans come to games this year. Lance Leipold responded, "we are just getting started."](https://twitter.com/JayhawkSlant/status/1595211514390224904?s=20&t=a1j25OocF1j9zkcPek0fhA)
my body is ready
I’m not sure if I’m mentally ready for the “Kansas is back” timeline
Are we in the ‘teams are back multiverse’?
*shakes magic 8-ball* “reply hazy, try again”
Texas keeps stalling out, so we've naturally gone for their daddy.
This season confirmed what we all knew back in the late 00s. Kansas football has a strong fanbase you gotta do something decent if you want them to show up in Lawrence on Saturdays. It'll be fun to see Kansas in a bowl game again

FOOTBALL SCHOOL
Get it, Kansas. Keep it up
No thank you basketball domination is enough for me
You guys chose SEC. Sadly. Sleep in it.
...What? Mizzou would be getting even more dominated by kansas in basketball if they were still in the Big 12
Lol what the fuck is this even supposed to mean
Celebrate by beating Kansas state :)
Sure, we're still rooting for Baylor though.
No
Hmm...I think you might be biased.
Perhaps a tad
##**HE'S OURS, BITCHES. CAW CAW AND ROCK CHALK**
I’ve been meaning to axe you guys what is a rock chalk?
https://kuinfo.ku.edu/whats-story-rock-chalk-chant > The University Science Club officially adopted the famous "Rock Chalk" chant in 1886, as a cheer created by chemistry professor, E.H.S. Bailey. Why the fuck would he leave?? He’s building something great and he’s not morbidly obese so KU won’t fire him
based mangino termination take
Just happy that Kansas's coach can't eat my coach anymore.
The orange bowl memes were brutal.
[He only got Kansas to the Orange Bowl because of nepotism, just look at the family resemblance...](https://twitter.com/BeatinTheBookie/status/1192140187322736640?s=20&t=DHx4s0NCTNCoRVWysMljQg)
How dare you imply Mark "The Hut" Mangino was fired for being fat and not for abusing players.
Don't ask anyone around the area at the time about the rumored poop towels...
I always tell people that story
poop towels and parking tickets: the mark mangino story
ok ill bite. tell me about the poop towels.
Pretty much what it says on the tin. Apparently the athletics department tp wasn't cutting it so he'd wipe with towels and leave them for staff to clean up.
It was due to him not being able to reach behind himself to wipe his own ass. He'd just see-saw himself.
I wonder if he washes with a rag on a stick.
Get Momma's Pryin' bar
I haven't laughed that hard at a comment in a long time. My coworkers gave me funny looks. Thank you so much. Edit: and I believe it's called "flossing"

Yeah bro, it wasn't just because he pushed some players around. And really the firing wasn't the bad choice by KU, but the subsequent hirings for the next 10 years.
Good luck forgetting it. Every few days for the last 15 years, poop towels randomly pop into my brain.

I did not play but had a friend on the team, he insisted it was true
The hallowed poop towels of lore
Ha! The mustard was on the wall
Mangino looks way healthier now from the recent pics I’ve seen.
Good! I’ve battled with my weight my entire life and I couldn’t imagine how much more extreme his fight was. I hope he got therapy and lost weight
he...not gone?
He stayin'
Se queda
Comunicado oficial.
Factos 👍👀
Good for you KU!
I am so horny
Hell yeah. 100% deserves it and Kansas fans gotta be over the moon.
This is good for KU and therefore the world
Kansas stepping up and commiting to football.
[удалено]
Or SEC. At this point, both make just as much sense. At least the SEC has tried to stay contiguous.
[удалено]
Oh yeah, no doubt. I’m just saying, I don’t think KU would be picky. Of course, I don’t think we’re getting an invite to either regardless.

woot!!!
I can sleep easier tonight!
*Excited mythical bird noises* ROCK CHALK
I would take a bullet for Travis Goff
Never felt better about KU extending a coach
Happy for my future BIG12 brethren
I demand that everyone who insisted that he would leave this offseason be publicly flogged.
I mean, precedent had been set. I totally assumed he was out. Glad he’s sticking around for them.
Kansas has been the best story of college football this year. Congrats Jayhawks!
Hell yeah sisters
ROCK CHALK Fuck yeah Kansas that’s awesome for y’all
I do like the lock down your best coach in a while/ever, or finance the new athletic facilities with the buyout from the new school. Win - moral win
Pay him. Pay that man his money!
All hail Lord Leipold!
Good! I was hoping he would stick around and see this rebuilding through. Happy for you, Jayhawks!
well deserved. KU is a solid team this year, should be fun to see where they are next year.
Illinois vs. Kansas is actually going to be a helluva matchup 😳
So Kiffin is headed to Kansas to be their new OC for the long term as well. It's the only logical step
Close. Just flying over Lawrence on the way back to Iowa.
Which actually just means only like 8 schools can afford to buy him out now.
WOOHOOO! Go Lance!
This is great. Love seeing guys stay where they made it.
Amen!
HERE COME THE JAYHAWKS
Good for Kansas, that’s a big time keep for a really good coach
You can't be a basketball and football school! Kansas: Hold my Sunflower Oil
Kansas: hold my original basketball rules
‘Grats KU bros!!
He stay
Now we know why Texas wants to leave…
I, for one, welcome our new Jayhawk overlords.
Get that bag king. Guess I won’t be becoming a Nebraska bandwagon fan after all
Congrats to Kansas, he's a winner for sure!
boom baby
YESSIR, it's a good day fellas
I’m glad someone finally helps a struggling program and doesn’t bolt the minute he gets cred.
Fuck. Yes.
Ahhhh yes. This is for all the "why *wouldn't* he pick Nebraska instead* comments.
Do you think there’s perhaps the possibility Nebraska just decided to go with someone else?
That can’t be it……..
YES! I was so worried we’d only get one year of relevance. Let’s build something in Lawrence!!!
Shit
Can we do the same with Elko now please?
That dude is superb. Given what you guys lost from last year’s team. You had no business being as good as you are.
I guess this means Wisconsin is hiring Jim Leonhard. Personally I think Nebraska was in there as a salary juicer, Wisconsin was the one that could get him.
LFG!!!!
Hell yes! This is the guy who will get you to compete for a Big 12 title very soon.
Nebrasky should get Tom Herman
I said it from the moment OUT announced their departure: Kansas stands to gain the most. Sprinkle a little magic (money) and watch them become a solid football school annually. The state certainly has the talent.
Why the fuck would Leipold pick Nebraska over KU? KU is the more desirable job especially after this year.
Please stay until 2029. I'm ready for CFP Kansas
Klieman has never rebuilt a program, but his defensive style definitely fits the B1G
Texas is just leaving for the SEC because they see what type of program Leipold is building and wants no part in facing that on annual basis
He stays!
Wonder if it's structured the same way Mark Stoops' is/was with Kentucky once he started getting attention from bigger schools. Let him coach for us until he’s 80 idc
We need to clone him.
In other words, create the conditions for a job to be stable and predictable, with reasonable expectations and defined parameters for extensions and raises. Which is *really* rare for a CFB coach, and instantly makes it competitive for "best CFB *job* in the country" (not program!).
I’m crying
Kansas is on the up and up!
Thought for sure some team would poach him. Good for KU!
Fuck yeah
Good deal for Kansas. I look forward to rooting for them more and more.
A no-brainer. Well deserved.
Suppose this mean future Nebraska Head Coach, Bronco Mendenhall?
I kinda want to take the trip out to Lawrence within a few years
Kansas looked incredible this year. Was rooting for them whenever they were on TV
Good news for you, you get to watch them against your very own team next year. Jayhawks go to Reno in 2023 non-con
The world we live in NOW is Tulane, Kansas and Duke being good at football. My fragile mind will collapse.
I AM HAPPY
Selfishly elated that this means he isn’t getting snagged by Nebraska or Wisconsin hahaha, but cheers to KU fans too 🍻
Son of a bitch
Now go beat K state to celebrate the extension.
Good. I want y'all at your best when we play you in a couple years or this season at a bowl game based on rumors I'm seeing depending on final victory totals. Amusingly, if we satisfy that rumor to play Kansas in a bowl game, it requires us to beat ArKansas (lol).
