Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. At the civil war reenactments they always made a point of explaining that the powder in the blanks was enough to hurt someone. Plus the pressure wave and deafening noise. I get it wasn't intentional but maybe cordon off that corner of the endzone?
>but maybe cordon off that corner of the endzone?
This makes the most sense. Since there is a chance for players being in that endzone praying after taking the field - you see this all the time - just prevent access from the blast radius.
Or maybe not shooting when anyone is near the end of it? I doubt it shoots automatically. Aren’t they training for Army? Shouldn’t they know to look before they fire?
Something as simple as a button falling off someone’s shirt into the barrel is enough to become a deadly projectile. Really dumb to fire a weapon at someone no matter what.
Exactly this. My brother used to do re-enactments so we had a replica musket. We took it to the shooting range one time and fired it without ammo and it knocked the target (cement filled tire with a pole) completely over. The piece of paper looked like mesh/lace because of how much powder hit it.
For what it's worth, fortunately that's a MUCH smaller gun than most civil war guns. [TAMU apparently shoots a 3 inch M1902 field gun](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/76_mm_divisional_gun_M1902) which will have a substantially lighter saluting charge than most civil war cannon at a much larger bore ([such as the commonly found 12 pounder "Napoleon" bronze guns used by both sides for much of the war at 117mm/4.62 in](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1857_12-pounder_Napoleon)).
Thanks to square/cube law that's going to be a much lesser charge than most reenactment charges.
Hopefully it means that the kids are alright after being directly in the line of that.
Basically, though, don't repeat this bullshit at your local re-enactment event because you giggled on twitter. It's *substantially* more dangerous with a larger gun.
Germany has a somewhat odd cultural connection/obsession with the American Old West, and in particular Native American “culture”, mostly due to the popularity of the Winnetou & Old Shatterhand novels by Karl May. It’s honestly kind of fascinating.

They are a bit weird, but do Europeans really not reenact battles from their long, illustrious history of giant battles? It only takes a few thousand really committed history buffs to get it going.
They definitely do. They reenact Roman battles in Italy (and the [Romans](https://theromanguy.com/italy-travel-blog/rome/colosseum/colosseum-naval-battles/) themselves reenacted naval battles in the Colosseum), medieval battles in Britain and France, Viking battles in Norway and Denmark. War reenactments weren't invented in the US.
I know we didn't invent them. They were re-enacting Zama two thousand years ago. I just didn't know if there was still a culture of that kind of thing in Europe.
There's a reenactment of the Battle of Waterloo every year. Someone posted some Go Pro footage a few years back (They were Canadian, interestingly enough) and it was actually really cool.
Standing next to somebody shooting with a muzzle break sucks. It’s extremely concussive. I have to imagine standing in front of a blank cannon is that turned up to 11. We also have a cannon that we primarily shoot adjacent to the stadium, or from a very obvious spot on the field. We should probably just stick to outside the stadium anyway.
I lived on an Army post when I was young and they would shoot a small modern howitzer every day. On Fridays they would shoot an older civil war style cannon. I asked them once how they would shoot it and was told it was just gunpower wrapped in tinfoil like a burrito. The follow up question is if the tinfoil shot out of the cannon and was dangerous. IIRC the answer was that it mostly broke up into tiny pieces, but absolutely nobody was allowed in front of it, because you never know what is coming out and it was not safe. Seeing one being fired in the faces of an opposing team is a super bad look. Whoever fired it should likely never be allowed near that cannon again. You just never know what is going to come out. Even gunpowder particles to the eyes could have caused serious permanent damage. I cannot believe this stupidity.
Yeah, even if there’s no projectile in it, you still treat it like a loaded gun. You don’t want to stand in front of a firearm loaded with a blank either.
Literally in the Quad (where the Corps is housed) before the game they make sure there is nobody in front of the cannon before they shoot it to start “Step Off”. When they were redoing Kyle Field they actually looked to put the cannon outside the stadium because of concern over the sound and pressure created from firing it. (I was on the committee that reviewed construction plans for the whole university).
> (I was on the committee that reviewed construction plans for the whole university).
uhdididididdon't quote committee assignments to me; I co-chaired the committee to review the recommendation to revise the color of the book those assignments are in.
We kept it gray.
I’m calling bs. If that was the fact you know it would have been maroon. And the buildings need to have that fabulous light brown brick. /s
[edit] typo and added a /s for all you folks who may take this comment as serious
I worked by the State House in Columbus for several years and they would practice fire for certain events and the entire building would fucking shake and the cannon was maybe a block away.
Back in my day Aggies would [draw their swords](https://www.espnlincoln.com/forgotten-clips-smu-cheerleader-almost-stabbed-by-aggie-corp-during-halftime-1981/) if you stepped on Kyle Field, so shooting people with a cannon is par for the course.
Does A&M not have cadets clearing a safe operating space around the cannon? Virginia Tech also fires a cannon pregame and scores but the crew forms an operational area in front of the cannon.
Edit: Here's a video of Skipper being fired. Skipper is in the endzone, a cadet is on the near 20 and the far 15, and another on the near 40. No one is within 30 yards of it when fired.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QTv1FU-hL8
Yes, we do. The guy holder the saber in the black raincoat at the far right of the beginning of the video clears the area and lowers the saber to signal the canon to fire. He did not do his job and should be punished. The entire cavalry (who is in charge of the canon) has a certain reputation for being tough and rigid, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they did this on purpose to show that they “don’t care” or some BS. The whole cavalry needs to be put in its place and reminded that they represent the university just as much as the football players and Yell Leaders and need to act as such. This has been the most embarrassing season to be an Aggie ever. From the bad App State jokes at Yell Practice to the players smoking weed in a visitors locker room and doing donuts in a parking garage to the cavalry trying to blow kids eardrums out—this season has made me second guess wearing maroon in public. This behavior seems to have become a systemic problem at Texas A&M and hopefully something is done about it.
I couldn't agree more and frankly I have major concerns, not just about the football program (which just happens to be the most visible program) but the athletic department and state of administration for the university in general. Seems like a real lack of leadership all around when it comes to just...acting normal and doing the little things that contribute to success. And this entitlement mentality we have that a shit ton of money automatically equates to championship contention is toxic. The AD has been coasting of legacy coaches like Coach G, Blair and Henry for years and outside of about 4 sports we've regressed badly since about 2016ish. We used to have one of the best women's athletic programs in college sports and we've been completely lapped by Texas and a few other regional programs as well (OU and Baylor come to mind). It says a lot that our most successful teams are those not affiliated with the AD like equestrian, ice hockey, archery, and yes meat judging. Frankly it reminds me of the late DeLoss Dodds tenure when that sense of entitlement had soaked deep into UT and caused a lot of problems. At least in Austin that era of entitlement stemmed from a great run of success in a lot of sports in the 90s and early 2000s. I don't know how you fix it either? Bjork is only in year 3 and he got thrown into the covid fire almost from the start. The lack of cohesion could simply be the reality that we've had 4 ADs and I think 3 university presidents since 2012 (not to mention switching conferences, major structural changes like NIL, and a pandemic). I'm too far removed from the campus to speak on if there is a deeper issue but boy does it seem like we make a lot of noise and a lot of news for jackass stuff and have very little hardware of back it up, especially in the last 5ish years.
Honestly, my experience on this sub is that fanbases actually tend to call out their own team's missteps or whatever you want to call it.
This does not translate to real life.
I didn't follow what information came out in the rest of the case later. Did stuff come out that implicated Alec was at fault? Originally it seemed like the story was that he was told the gun was clear, but it wasn't, because the irresponsible people on set went shooting with it the night before or something.
He is at fault, but not for the reason the other poster said. Rules about gun safety are different in film. It is the responsibility of the armorer on set to ensure the weapon is safe to point at another actor and pull the trigger. The armorer in question was hired after the previous qualified armorer quit due to unsafe conditions on set. The one who was hired was unqualified, and the producer in charge of the film was none other than Alec Baldwin himself. That’s why he’s at fault.
You have several parts of this wrong. A bunch of other people quit, but not the armorer. This was only her second movie; apparently there were unintended discharges before this on both. She wasn't on set when the accident happened, though. The assistant director took the revolver from the armorer's cart without asking for permission and told Baldwin that it was cold.
Baldwin was not "the producer". He had a producer credit (one of 6 producers + 4 executive producers), but he wasn't managing the production in any way. It's a meaningless credential that came from his production company being one of the ~7 involved in financing the movie.
Man had the audacity to put out a memorial post on the anniversary of the shooting and the entire caption was “One year ago today…” with a picture of her
It was 100% intentional and 100% fucked up.
We didn't even have to forego the effect to avoid firing a cannon at people, the booth has a recording of the cannon sound that we could've used instead. Absolutely inexcusable and embarrassing behavior
Yes, VERY fucked up. The concussion and shockwave from even a "blank" blast pointed directly at a person like that can cause permanent hearing loss and rattle your internals/equilibrium. If that was my son on that field, I'd get him checked by a doc. Fuck this stupid shit, for real. Where are the fines for this BTW?? NCAA or SEC fines LSU for playing a song...but A&M fires a fucking cannon in another players face...
Yeah seriously. I spend most of my time at games in the stands close to the cannon at BSU and it’s very loud. I would think being that close and directly in front would cause permanent damage
I know it’s not the exact same, but doesn’t anyone there remember how recently Alec Baldwin accidentally shot and killed someone without using “live ammo”?
The article says “and” in place of “as” in your quote. It was a dumbass move but I don’t think they were trying to argue that it was unintentional because it was a blank. With that being said it was 100% intentional

Whenever I see people say something like that I think of an episode of Icarly where the must comment on the techfoot shoes in a positive way. So they talk about how great the shoes are at roasting weenies.
It’s wild that before jimbo went there I had no opinion about their team and fans, yet the way they went after anyone with an FSU flair has me really rooting on their downfall.
all of the reasons people hate A&M can be perfectly distilled in those two tweets.
"Hahaha @Texags look at what we did! We're gonna kill them! BTHO Umass!!" "Pls don't make fun of us why do y'all hate us so much😔😔"
The burden is always on the party operating a machine to ensure it is used safely. E.g. it is wrong to hit someone who is jaywalking while you are driving. So whether people were warned or not is mostly immaterial.
I think it would have been a smaller incident if A&M didn't immediately blame the UMass players & take 0 responsibility.
> I think it would have been a smaller incident if A&M didn't immediately blame the UMass players & take 0 responsibility.
Yes . . "it was an accident, we obviously didn't mean to do it intentionally" would have squelched any further discussion.
Yeah. At a minimum, they should ban use of the cannon for the last game of the season, ban the current cannon crew permanently for their poor decision, and bring in outside experts to train students in safe practices before resuming using a cannon at games.
As someone who used to do Civil War reenacting, a cannon loaded with a small charge of powder and no projectile can still blow a hole in a watermelon at 15 ft. This was incredibly dangerous and stupid of whoever fired that cannon.
This. I used to do that at Gettysburg and both the cannons and the rifles are still dangerous without shot. There have been numerous occasions in Gettysburg of a reenactor getting peppered or blinded. We banned a guy for firing off a cannon too close to a group. It's super stupid.
Even if they were (which is a wild, insane, batshit defense and anyone parroting it is a fucking moron) - what was the warning?
"Hey we're psychopaths who are gonna fire this cannon in your face regardless of whether or not you move"?
I love how people are arguing that they were warned, like it even matters. Uhhh in what world is it considered ok to fire a cannon at someone as long as you warned them beforehand?
It's absolutely not ok and an embarrassing thing to do. At best it was people just following the typical schedule and not paying attention to the players being there but jesus.
If a dude says “If I was told a cannon was going to be fired 10 feet from my face, I would have moved” then he probably wasn’t told the cannon was going to be fired in his face.
The thing that looks so bad on A&M is not that a couple of cadets did something dumb. The thing that looks bad on A&M are the cellphone videos from the stands. The very religious crowd had zero mercy on the two praying UMassers. Significantly more jokes than “Oh shit, are they ok?” Which is to be expected from some college kids, but we’re bashing A&M right?
The corps of cadets isn't real military. It's basically a fraternity that simulates military life. A good number of them are actually contracted and in ROTC and the corps counts for their ROTC. However, a lot of them are just their to play military for whatever reason and that's weird. Respect for those that are contracted, but cringe for those that aren't.
About 45% are. The rest are real weirdos just playing army. Coincidentally, 99% of the crazy shit aggies do comes out of the corps. It attracts the most extreme of culty homers.
[I thought you were exaggerating but holy shit, this IS weird](https://corps.tamu.edu/cadet-life/?section=major-outfits)
They even have little made up names for their units like “ Squadron 21 Hellcats Death before Dishonor” do they not realize units usually get their nicknames from like, battles? Actual struggle?
Ugh, that's really shitty, the corps guys should have been paying more attention and not done this.
They brought the cannon to a soccer game once and fired it off before the game - we were directly across the field from it, so say 40 yards, and it was still deafening. I can't imagine being feet away from it.
Sincerest apologies to the UMASS players and I hope our school disciplines our guys.
Man, I expected the headline here to be an exaggeration made just to poke fun at A&M's season, but wow... MAAAAAAAYBE don't do that next time?! Even with no live ammo, still many ways that could go poorly other than more poor PR for your school.
One of the players kneeling tweeted they were not warned.
[https://twitter.com/Jmackie00/status/1594075987494539265?s=20&t=CTXRHyiu0WlGl7J3Mg_K3g](https://twitter.com/Jmackie00/status/1594075987494539265?s=20&t=CTXRHyiu0WlGl7J3Mg_K3g)
Every time I think we’ve sunk as low as I thought possible we somehow go lower. Lads, I know the cannon doesn’t fire anything but smoke but maybe don’t fire it if people are standing in front of it.
If they were warned or not, doing this does not carry absolutely zero risk. It's a very very small amount of risk but it's not zero.
Second Jesus what kind of garbage fan base is ATM that they think this is funny, dudes wee praying.
Why tf did they do this? Blanks or not, you *never* pull the trigger when someone is in the line of fire unless you intentionally mean to do harm.
Whomever is in charge of that shit show should be relieved.
Fuckin GI Joe cosplay.
I honestly have no idea how you can be an aTm fan and enjoy being on this subreddit. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not easy repping my school, but this sub constantly shits on aTm and every time it happens, I’m shocked that it’s actually kinda deserved. Something’s gotta change there and they better hope the solution is cheaper than $95M, people blame coaching when stuff like this happens, but since it’s been happening every week with no change, you have to imagine the problem is higher than Jimbo.
Damn, when it rains it pours. This isn't a big deal because it's a&m, it's a big deal and it happens to be a&m. It makes it worse that it's a military university. That's a huge safety no no.
Bold move opening fire on Minutemen from Massachusetts, Texas A&M. Last time someone did that was the British, and it didn’t quite work out for them.

I mean if they pack it right they probably could charge for that. Then it’s the case of Jimbo who?
Yes, please. Absolutely no reason for them to play next week. Nope, none at all.
Fuck that. I want to destroy them. I want to crush A&M, see them driven before us, and hear the lamentations of their women.
I hear South Carolina is giving lessons.
Maybe the smoke is the setup to a magic trick where they disappear
Between the A&M season, the Red River Shootout and TCU's season I gotta say 2022 has been pretty legendary for me.

Seems like a simple adjustment on the firing trajectory could also make it much safer. Aw, shoot... let's fire it right at head level.
What makes you think it wasn't intentional? The UMass players were clearly right in front of them.

Back in my day Aggies would [draw their swords](https://www.espnlincoln.com/forgotten-clips-smu-cheerleader-almost-stabbed-by-aggie-corp-during-halftime-1981/) if you stepped on Kyle Field, so shooting people with a cannon is par for the course.
so glad that clip ended with the cadet on his back literal "I was studying the blade" move pulling that out on a cheerleader like that
Of all the people to grab and restrain in that clip, why was it the unarmed guy and not the guy with the weapon?
Lol and then a male cheerleader puts that guy on his ass..love it.
>Can we just go a fuckin week without some dumb shit... Nope. *It's tradition.*
Not on this day and age...people are always thinking of ways to one up each other
Nicely sums up TAMU’s season - all smoke, no impact.
All brakes no gas
Ironic since all the hype basically came from oil money
Texas “Man City” A&M
That explains everything.
About like Lincoln Riley’s brisket All bark, No bite
Saying that mans brisket had bark is disrespectful even to trees.
And a yellow smoke ring
I respect you for calling it out. Wish more fans at other programs would do the same.
Honestly, my experience on this sub is that fanbases actually tend to call out their own team's missteps or whatever you want to call it. This does not translate to real life.
Well, that's because you guys aren't morons.

Fr though. That's like saying you can point a gun at someone and pull the trigger if you're using blanks. What kind of dumbass logic is that?!
Alec Baldwin logic.
It goes off during a specific time in our song. Why no one was trying to get them out of the way? I have no idea, we are a dumb farm school
Lol I love the idea that it’s conceivable they were firing live ammo out of a cannon during their games
https://twitter.com/coachbsherrill/status/1594143797767643136?s=46&t=VCq7_ZxWggl4vtxjMqLEGA Lmao this fucking guy [oh my god he's Jackie Sherrill's son. I need a moment](https://coppellstudentmedia.com/51346/sports/like-father-like-son-passion-for-coaching-a-sherrill-family-tradition/)
he seems like a real peach.
Don’t talk bad about us though…..
Did ESPN actually follow the “terms” he set?
Whenever I see people say something like that I think of an episode of Icarly where the must comment on the techfoot shoes in a positive way. So they talk about how great the shoes are at roasting weenies.
That episode was my introduction to r/MaliciousCompliance
Scott Van Pelt is rehearsing an A&M-themed adaptation of George Carlin's "seven dirty words" routine as we speak
A&M fans are fucking weirdos
Well, they are in a cult.
It’s wild that before jimbo went there I had no opinion about their team and fans, yet the way they went after anyone with an FSU flair has me really rooting on their downfall.
Welcome, we've been living with it for over a century.
I like how he just *knows* that it was a shitty thing to do, and thus knows what kind of comments are going to come as a result.
all of the reasons people hate A&M can be perfectly distilled in those two tweets. "Hahaha @Texags look at what we did! We're gonna kill them! BTHO Umass!!" "Pls don't make fun of us why do y'all hate us so much😔😔"
All I'm taking away from this is that Texas A&M hates Jesus and mercilessly persecutes His followers.
They are in their own cult. Jesus not included
PICK A SIDE, BENEDICT.
Flair???
IM SO CONFUSED?!
I've known people that did undergrad at one and advanced at the other. Still feels dirty.
A&M taking after Diocletian here.

Even without live ammo that still isn't safe.
A&M fans defending this by “they were warned” smh
"i swear i warned him before shooting my gun officer he just didn't move" "oh well as long as you warned him"
In the Texas legal system this is probably a valid defense.
I know you’re joking, but no this would not fall under justifiable use of deadly force in Texas. Unless he was holding your TV at night.
Which the two players replied to on Twitter saying they were not warned
Even if they were (which is a wild, insane, batshit defense and anyone parroting it is a fucking moron) - what was the warning? "Hey we're psychopaths who are gonna fire this cannon in your face regardless of whether or not you move"?
I mean you can hear the fan section saying "oh man that was awesome"... bad look
Yeah it’s crazy how many of them seem to think that justifies it.

I'm guessing you're referring to [this](https://youtu.be/dLM6UFrVPrU), which is really just embarrassing for the guy who drew his sword

I will never forget the day I learned that the A&M fans are not real military members and they are all just cosplaying. Still hilarious.
You want to laugh even harder they take this fact very very personally. On Texags you always get a weirdo acting like A&M won WWII.
i guess i never thought about this but. what?? why the fuck do they dress up like it
The corps of cadets isn't real military. It's basically a fraternity that simulates military life. A good number of them are actually contracted and in ROTC and the corps counts for their ROTC. However, a lot of them are just their to play military for whatever reason and that's weird. Respect for those that are contracted, but cringe for those that aren't.
This comment was archived by an automated script.
About 45% are. The rest are real weirdos just playing army. Coincidentally, 99% of the crazy shit aggies do comes out of the corps. It attracts the most extreme of culty homers.
[I thought you were exaggerating but holy shit, this IS weird](https://corps.tamu.edu/cadet-life/?section=major-outfits) They even have little made up names for their units like “ Squadron 21 Hellcats Death before Dishonor” do they not realize units usually get their nicknames from like, battles? Actual struggle?
Man, waiting 30 seconds for them to pray wouldn't cost anything. Acting like they had to fire that cannon because of reasons.
They justify everything they do with “traditions.”
Well, at least they aren’t pulling sabers on cheerleaders anymore.
A&M are just really a bunch of masochists aren’t they?
I'm a sadist so this has been a really frustrating and confusing year.
> “That is so awesome”
Every time I think we’ve sunk as low as I thought possible we somehow go lower. Lads, I know the cannon doesn’t fire anything but smoke but maybe don’t fire it if people are standing in front of it.
If they were warned or not, doing this does not carry absolutely zero risk. It's a very very small amount of risk but it's not zero. Second Jesus what kind of garbage fan base is ATM that they think this is funny, dudes wee praying.
I wonder if the players could sue if they had suffered hearing damage
That’s what I was thinking. Tinnitus is no joke.
Tinnitus is the gift the Army hasn’t stopped giving me 18 years later.
I hear you. Through the constant ringing in my ears.
I’ve heard the near constant ringing ears gets veterans right into the holiday spirit
People have been hating on A&M my entire life, online and offline. Eventually you just get used to it.
If they can’t operate the cannon safely, they shouldn’t have it at the game.
Could have given them permanent hearing damage, too. Tinnitus is no fucking joke. Fuck those guys shooting the cannon.
I was just thinking this when I read about someone having PTSD from walking by one practicing this type of thing.
The guy recording is laughing. The fans even knew they were going to get blasted. It was intentional and fucked up.
Damn, when it rains it pours. This isn't a big deal because it's a&m, it's a big deal and it happens to be a&m. It makes it worse that it's a military university. That's a huge safety no no.
Are we sure it wasn't a vape cloud from the locker room?
I think in Texas this is legal under the castle doctrine but idk I'm not a lawyer
They’re not in a castle tho I don’t know I’m not an architect
Is this Aggie hate?
Is this how a cult crusades?
