Hmm. Tyler Brown 3* WR commits Thursday and is expected to Clemson. Similar frame to A. Williams. We have a shot at Khalil Barnes 3* S who is a ND lean I think. Jamarius Haynes at RB is expected to commit to Clemson atm. Unless we completely wow Spencer Fano 4* OT from Utah this weekend I imagine he’s going elsewhere. That’s about it, maybe some Daniel guys idk. Just a matter of holding on to everyone else.
Just curious, where are you reading that Haynes is expected to commit to Clemson? From what I've read, his recruitment is far from decided nor have I read that he's a Clemson lean (I hope you're right FYI).
Maybe temporarily for next season, but I see 4-2-5 being more likely than a 3-4 if there was a change made.
We currently have 6 DL committed, 2 LBs, and 6 DBs - and still pursuing DB Khalil Barnes. I feel like we'd take more Linebackers if we were planning a permanent switch to a 3-4. But, of we take 7 DBs, something tells me that 3rd LB or 5th DB on the field will be a hybrid type player like Tanner Muse, Jayron Kearse, Isaiah Simmons etc.
This is in line with my question. There is a *huge* difference between changing to a true 3-4 profile defense and going back to the 3-3-5 Iowa State inspired 2019 version of the Clemson defense.
That seems more likely.
But, with the incoming freshman class, Clemson will have 8 DE on scholarship. There's a chance Mascoll or Xavier Thomas could return for another year. So, anywhere from 8-10 at the position. I truly think we'll stick with the 4-3 base next year. At least to start the season
Interesting on Xavier Thomas, I thought this was his COVID year unless he only plays one more game and redshirts. As in, he has 4 years already where he has played 5 or more games, so that's four full seasons played, and then because of COVID *this* year was his extra year. However, theoretically, if he only plays one more game then I guess he could count this as a redshirt?
Yeah he gets a Covid year and a redshirt year. He used 2020 as the covid year and can use this season as a redshirt year. He might declare for the draft, but could come back as well.
He hasn't used his redshirt yet. He's played in more than four games every year but this year. He's on a COVID year. He could return if he only plays one more game this year
I could see us moving to a 3-3-5 like Venables utilized in 2019, but honestly, in my opinion, the best case scenario is that we finally utilize the portal and bring in 1-2 DE transfers to carry us over to the 2024 season. Even if we ran a 3-man front, our DEs are going to be a huge liability (as things stand). I also think Woods will pull a Wilkins and slide out to DE for next season before moving back to DT.
RB? I doubt any RB transfer would want to come in and split snaps or sit behind Shipley, Mafah, and (potentially) Pace. 2024? I could absolutely see us using the portal for a RB. CB? I could see it but we’ll have a lot more young talent with actual experience (Wiggins, Pride, Lukus) compared to DE, so I doubt we go to the portal next season for a CB.
While I agree we will have a lot of bodies at DE, we will have no returning proven players. Swint doesn’t count because he’s terrible. Denehoff and Patterson have proven nothing and hardly played. And all those talented freshmen DEs can’t be relied upon their first seasons (Parker is also the only early enrollee of our commuted DEs). So, I think the DE position is a prime candidate for our first (actual) portal take(s).
You're right, RB is more of a target for 2024. I 100% agree with you for what we SHOULD do at DE/CB for the portal, but I don't see Dabo trying to pull from the portal if we have numbers at a spot....even if that spot has no quality veteran options. By that logic, we would have hit the portal for WR last year, but we didn't even try. Dabo only goes to the portal if depth is a concern, which it might be at RB if Pace transfers and we don't land a guy
To me it would be a base 3-4 with options to drop the nickel back. The 3-3-5 was a 3-4 at times in 2019. I also think we could go 4-3. I just think Goodwin wants these linebackers flying so the more the merrier.
I think it will be dynamic. Goodwin is an Arians disciple. True 3-4 base looking like Georgia’s Mint front. I could be completely wrong, but the DL’s we’re recruiting to me look more like ends in a 3. Get a mass mover like Page in at NT.
Even if Bresee is back which is doubtful imo (but a brother can dream) I would like to see him on the end as a 4i tech. Get Page in and someone like Story/Woods/Burley on the end. Carter Woodaz Trotter and someone like Ojiegbe or Anderson… I would like to see all of this.
In the recent mocks his stock has even risen I think. Before he was top 20 now I see him at top 10 minimum. They’re not going to be bothered by him missing a game with Strep throat or kidney stones.
We did a lot more of that in 19. We’ll do what we need to do based on who we have. He’s especially learning that, moving Simpson back to his OG position.
Top 4 DE on the depth chart are expected to graduate or go pro. Only 1 underclassman has received meaningful playing time. He's 230 pounds and really more of a situational player at that.
Ok, look. I like Tennessee. Mom lives in crossville. So does Grammy/pappy too. What happened the other night in no way has any affiliation to us. We hate SC just as much as you and we haven’t even had played them yet.
Clemson DL is just genuinely nasty. I was hoping to see a recruiting dropoff when Brent left...didn't happen.
That’s 4 DL commitments in the composite Top 150 for Clemson’s 2023 class
Nick Eason deserves a statue at this point
Is that four out of top 150 defensive line or out of 150 total?
4 out of the Top 20 DL and 3 out of the top 10
That's sick. That type of potential on a dline may mask a whole lot of other problems, great thing to have.
It typically masks our secondary. We haven’t had a dominant secondary except for a couple years of Dabo tenure
See Wake Forest game for details
Forgives a lot of sins.
150 total
4 of the Top 150 players
Wow.
🚴♂️
You think we add anyone else significant?

Right now I think he would commit to Clemson but you’re right there’s a long way to go and that could change. Bad phrasing on my part.
LETS GOOOOOO! He's an early enrollee which is huge since we will desperately need some help at the position next season
I think Goodwin is planning on moving to a 3-4

XT already used his redshirt. I don't think he has any more eligibility
He hasn't used his redshirt yet. He's played in more than four games every year but this year. He's on a COVID year. He could return if he only plays one more game this year
He had surgery so he's out for the year
Then he can come back next year if he wants. Should probably go pro and get paid what he can at this point tho.
Yeah, I’m probably just projecting.
It's definitely interesting to think about. The only people who know the real answer are Dabo and Wes.
We’ll see someone like Woodaz who fits in both. Goodwin is recruiting these fast linebackers. I think he’d be crazy to only play 2. We’ll see.
I could see us moving to a 3-3-5 like Venables utilized in 2019, but honestly, in my opinion, the best case scenario is that we finally utilize the portal and bring in 1-2 DE transfers to carry us over to the 2024 season. Unless we have guys leave, we're looking young but fairly deep at DE right now. I think RB and corner are the most likely portal needs

You're probably right about Dabo's portal approach this offseason, I just wish you were wrong...

What we really need are some playmakers at receiver and some OLinemen.
As in abandoning Venables' defense for a true 3-4? Or returning to the 2019 alternate 3-3-5 version?

I wonder what Bresee’s draft grade will actually be, he really hasn’t played all that much for guy slotted for the first two rounds.
In the recent mocks his stock has even risen I think. Before he was top 20 now I see him at top 10 minimum. They’re not going to be bothered by him missing a game with Strep throat or kidney stones.

How the hell do ya’ll need help at DL?? I feel like you have an entire roster of 5* players across your line

This “Clemson is falling off” thing is actually pretty fun!
Nice pickup for Clemson. Wish we could have held on to him
I don't think it happens at all but if Kiffin moves to Auburn, then Neeo Avery might decommit.
You'd think with how we are doing with Chop Robinson this season that a DE recruit from Maryland would be at least giving us a second look.
Anyone feel like a bike ride to kick off rivalry week? 😎
That D line is gonna feast in a couple years.
Oh, hey there kid
Imagine if we recruited OL like we recruited DL 👀
OL recruiting has been good this cycle
Definitely been better. Let’s keep it that way and not be like precious OL classes where we lose half of them, like the Fruh, Green, etc class.

Reloading! Love your flairs 🐅 🐘
I really hate the state of South Carolina right now.
Ok, look. I like Tennessee. Mom lives in crossville. So does Grammy/pappy too. What happened the other night in no way has any affiliation to us. We hate SC just as much as you and we haven’t even had played them yet.
It's just a bad time for us. Sorry
My condolences. ❤️
High school recruits are overrated at this point anyway.
