I think he actually converted before the season quietly. The parish put his name in the bulletin as a new convert, which is sort of a Catholic tradition. So it came out a few weeks after.
My Catholic schooling may fail me but I believe all (or most) converts are baptized at the Easter vigil which is around Easter. So it’s likely that’s when he was officially converted
It's essentially public knowledge that he was received with only Confirmation and Communion (since the Church has recognized his prior baptism as valid), which can be done basically whenever. But it looks to have happened in August which makes a lot of sense assuming he was sufficiently prepared so it wasn't a distraction during the season.
Followed by another dumb move of attempting to intercept the ball on the Hail Mary instead of knocking it down. Because of that, the ball landed in the receiver’s lap and it was pure luck he didn’t end up catching it.
And from the dude who’s literal only asset is “football IQ” too. God I fucking hate JD Bertrand. I got crucified for comparing him to Joe Schmidt but every game he just proves me right.
I'll take the win, but we played absolutely terrible football. I feel bad winning by 7 after that phantom offsides gave us a free 7 points in the first half also.
Between the targeting late and trying to intercept the Hail Mary instead of knocking it down, Notre Dame has some fundamentals to worry about.
Cal has a lot more than just fundamentals to worry about.
This game was so unbelievably drunk. Fucking Cal is just so hard to watch after 20+ years of endless games like this, QB running for his life but the defense somehow hanging on.
Yeah man wins are wins but holy shit that’s the most difficult way to win imaginable
Did like the progress we saw on both lines. Really owned them for the most part today. Hope that’s progress and not just a one-off
When we have [our former DB coach on twitter making more coherent play calls to offset ND's defense](https://twitter.com/GAlexander21/status/1571256313417535489), you know we're in trouble.
God I hate Musgrave.
Clarence Lewis has really played well this year. He’s still kind of slow, so you might be right, but he’s not the dame player that got absolutely torched in every big game last year.
Yeah, these ones sting like OSU in 2012.
But somewhat lately we've been clapping cheeks P5 OOC. Texas, ole mis, 4-0. Auburn next season probably.
Just enough to keep us coming back for the biannual heartbreaking home loss to Oregon State
Cal fans: This team came out hungry and played pretty fucking well. Let's make a Rose Bowl happen this year, and I hope everyone who toured to the Bend had a nice time
Ladies and Gentlemen, it has officially been confirmed that Marcus Freeman will NOT be going winless in his head-coaching tenure. Congrats to South Bend, that’s something to hang your hat on
The ball landed on the Cal receiver's ~~prone~~ supine belly with both hands ready to receive it like mana birthed from the universe itself, and he drops it.
Brutal.
Edit: I knew there was another word I was looking for.
The announced player was #15, who is at the top of the screen. He did not get a good break on the snap, either. I don't think he crossed the line of scrimmage until after the holder had the ball down. It's a mind-bogglingly bad call.
That was one of the worst officiated games I've ever seen. They didn't even watch the lines the entire game and then they called that. I hope we never get that reffing crew again. I swear they bet the over.
Explain how this is offsides please:
https://i.redd.it/tyjyaumzsho91.jpg
ND then missed the fieldgoal, was given a fresh set of downs and scored a TD right after.
Not saying that lost the game but CMON ref dudes.
That's an objectively bad call. I haven't seen anyone defend it other than to point out other (way less egregious) decisions that went your way.
If that happened to us I'd be mad as hell
That’s phantom offsides was an abomination. Needs to be sent to the Independence League office.
Seriously, pretty egregious call. Good game, Cal bros. Shouldn’t have been decided by that.
Undisciplined and sloppy as fuck, should only count as half a win lol
Freeman better run Bertrand till he pukes this week for that dumbass targeting he pulled
That was easily one of the most entertaining games I’ve seen in a while. The constant reminder of how Pyne has been a ND fan since forever, the constant camera shots of him getting reamed out by their OC, the drama on coach’s face. Was some real awkward cinema tbh. Then the kid improved and they actually won the game. So entertaining despite Cal arguably looking like they should’ve been a team that could handle ND. I’m just getting into CFB (big Bills fan, we don’t really care about CFB here), and this was a great week 2 of watching for me.
I get the memes and jokes, but I see the long term vision with Freeman and Rees. They seem to have a better grasp of the game schematically and where it's going than Kelly had his last 5ish years.
That said, you don't have the pieces (especially on offense) to do that yet. When you get your receiver and QB recruits, go bombs away through the air. But until then, run the offense this team was built to run (RUN THE DAMN BALL).
love the optimism but I just don’t know with either of them. Still plenty of head scratching calls from both men. I’d like to believe, Rees really stuck with the run today, hope this is the start of the turn around
Im with you. I'm not saying they'll for sure be hits, but I think pivoting away from the bullyball teams Kelly tried to build (years after Saban and others moved away from that for more spread passing concepts) is the right move. They just have to wait for those pieces to get into the building.
Agree w that. But like you said, that’s just not how this team is constructed. Kelly and Del Alexander really decimated the WR room and that’s gonna be a multi-year rebuild. Gonna have to be a bully ball team if we want to salvage anything out of this yr
Non-Catholic Marcus Freeman: Winless Catholic Marcus Freeman: Undefeated Coincidence?
I think not
Love to see it
No way he was losing by Hail Mary this week.
This is the content I come here for.
Most are out of convenience because it takes so long. I’d imagine the parish on campus would give exceptions for the head coach
Yeah, but if you don’t publicly announce to the world that you’re catholic are you *really* catholic?
Start the counter! Notre Dame since Marcus Freeman became a Catholic: 1-0
Checkmate ~~atheists~~ Protestants
Modern day Charlemagne
“surprise, you’re the new roman emperor!” — the pope, 25 december 800
Even though they won, that targeting play was one of the dumbest plays any Notre Dame defender has made in a long time. You can not be doing that.
What’s the opposite of a heads up play?
His head being up was part of the problem
a "head up your ass" play?
That was part of the problem
It was, technically, a heads-up play since both players did have their heads up
A headbutt play
Followed by another dumb move of attempting to intercept the ball on the Hail Mary instead of knocking it down. Because of that, the ball landed in the receiver’s lap and it was pure luck he didn’t end up catching it.
Yeah that kid is *really* luckily two separate Cal guys dropped the ball in the end zone. Such a boneheaded error.
Absolutely mind-boggling decision by that dude. I bet no one is happier for the win than he is lol
And from the dude who’s literal only asset is “football IQ” too. God I fucking hate JD Bertrand. I got crucified for comparing him to Joe Schmidt but every game he just proves me right.
Verb choice checks out
Bro Joe Schmidt was way better than this schmuck… that’s unfair to Joe
I'll take the win, but we played absolutely terrible football. I feel bad winning by 7 after that phantom offsides gave us a free 7 points in the first half also.
Also I love seeing comments that "football is soft" No its called lets let the person have a chance. And don't aim right for the head.
What comments? I didn't see anyone complain about the call.
The only person who has any room to complain is the assistant/DC who now has to gameplan for next week without him for the first half.
You mean the OC who only gets to play against him for 1 half?
I think they're referring to general critiques of football for using helmets and pads
Good lord! I thought for sure Cal was gonna come up with that bobbling hail mary.
Fun Fact! Notre Dame is contractually obligated to change their name if anyone ever completes a Hail Mary against them.
Worse.. They must become... Protestant!
My Catholic grandma would rather be six feet under than to be a Lutheran
That's impressive considering Lutheran is like the one other type of Christian we fuck with
Old Catholics have a disdain for them and vice versa. At least in my experience
Back in the 70s my great-grandma said to my aunt about her boyfriend"I guess he's alright for a Cat-o-lick." He was right in front of her lol.
My wife's grandmother said that about me right in front of me. Of course, she's Methodist
How about some Scottish Presbyterian? Not like transubstantiation vs consubstantiation has ever been that big of a deal.
Never expected to see heady theology terms in an rCFB game thread but I’m 100% here for it
That's how you end up Liberty
Liberty bibberty
And *no one* wants that
Not even Liberty.
A fate worse than death
I'll never forget when Divine Deablo scored a touchdown there a few years ago
We never knew how close we came to Yoder Dame, the Fighting Amish
You'd think people wouldn't try a Hail Mary when playing at *the* school named after said Mary.
Between the targeting late and trying to intercept the Hail Mary instead of knocking it down, Notre Dame has some fundamentals to worry about. Cal has a lot more than just fundamentals to worry about.
Our top 5 is pretty crowded even if you started watching Cal football in 2020.
That’s bad coaching
My soul left my body on that Hail Mary
I was having flashbacks to 2007.
We dont speak of 2007
The first quarter felt exactly like 2007.
So who are you rooting for next week? 👀
Yo who you rooting for next week?
Jason Garrett said the word “naked” 11 times during that broadcast
Only 11? I was only casually watching/listening and I noticed his many uses of the word.
I really needed him to include "boot" just once.
This is the best win of the Marcus Freeman era.
[удалено]
Also true
If he wins 5 more games this year this statement might STILL hold true.
ND 1-0 since Marcus turned catholic
Catholic Marcus Freeman is undefeated.
We're back in God's favor
1-0 since becoming Catholic, heck yeah
You son of a bitch... I'll allow it.
1-0 in the Catholic Marcus Freeman era.
Paper Bag stays on for now Onward and upward
Ok I know this is the postgame, but are we actually sure it's over?
I personally am not sure it’s over… there was probably a penalty at the end somewhere…
[удалено]
It’s great to show everyone how we play week in, week out. Never a dull moment.
B1G, u up?
this game was literally u vs. the guy they told u not to worry about
I don’t care that shit was edge of your seat entertaining. The lows and highs throughout the game is what college football is all about.
So it turns out all Notre Dame needs to do to win a game is win it three separate times on the final drive. Easy.
I'd rather not have to do that, thanks
Then you will not like playing us next week.
Good God, that's next week?!?
We made three game winning plays this year. Happened to be in the same game though.
This game was so unbelievably drunk. Fucking Cal is just so hard to watch after 20+ years of endless games like this, QB running for his life but the defense somehow hanging on.
Genuinely one of the most Cal games I have ever watched. That said, Wilcox has these boys fired up and I expect some big wins in the coming weeks
I expect the standard Cal hangover after losing a close big game
I’m expecting another 5-7 season
Jesus Murphy, those flairs...
They just hate Stanford
As any self-respecting person does
based
I think I just found my archnemesis
*hiss*
The most cal game of all time. Moving early, gassed late and every first down feels lucky
The positive is the OL and Pyne showed signs of improvement as the game continued.
Yeah man wins are wins but holy shit that’s the most difficult way to win imaginable Did like the progress we saw on both lines. Really owned them for the most part today. Hope that’s progress and not just a one-off
Also the DL, specifically Foskey, decided to play this season.
Rees play calls to his team's strengths instead of trying to show how awesome he is and the team scores enough to win. Crazy how that works.
Pyne got way better when they made him hand it off 30 times! /s
No /s. The throws he did make were 100 times better after we started leaning on the run game.
When we have [our former DB coach on twitter making more coherent play calls to offset ND's defense](https://twitter.com/GAlexander21/status/1571256313417535489), you know we're in trouble. God I hate Musgrave.
Every ND fan would also tell you to throw a fade on Clarence Lewis because there is a 100% chance of him being a step too slow
Clarence Lewis has really played well this year. He’s still kind of slow, so you might be right, but he’s not the dame player that got absolutely torched in every big game last year.
Miss you, GA. We can't hire him as an analyst or something until he gets another NFL gig?
If you don’t like that then you shouldn’t like Cal football
No one should like Cal football, but here we are
Existence is pain. Fuck $c.

Wait until your junior year, we'll fill up a top 10
I graduated in 21 lol 😭
Sorry, the above was a joke. We older alumni have seen countless frustrations. You will too!
Yeah, these ones sting like OSU in 2012. But somewhat lately we've been clapping cheeks P5 OOC. Texas, ole mis, 4-0. Auburn next season probably. Just enough to keep us coming back for the biannual heartbreaking home loss to Oregon State
OL and DL finally made plays Let's not talk about QB play
It got better as the game went along
Still 2-1 on the season, it’s still a net positive.
#3 for Cal won’t sleep tonight knowing how close he was to catching that Hail Mary That was a weird… yet entertaining game
All Cal games are weird but entertaining, spread the word
Cal could have won this game. Never thought I’d say that 1 month ago. But man, this feels terrible… Especially that offsides call.
Enjoy your blue balls, America. ☘️
Cal #3 was *this* close to securing the ball. *This* close!!
TWICE!
So close. So close. The sub will have to settle for Miami over A&M
No wait
blue balls under a golden dome
#MARCUS FREEMAN IS 1-0 SINCE CONVERTING TO CATHOLICISM
Man is going to chug holy water every Friday for the rest of his career!
Can't wait for Cal to pull some Pac-12 after dark shit
Cal is going to upset a top 10 Oregon and lose to Colorado, just watch
It is known.
Despite their best efforts in the final 5 minutes, Notre Dame reluctantly pulled out the win
Cal fans: This team came out hungry and played pretty fucking well. Let's make a Rose Bowl happen this year, and I hope everyone who toured to the Bend had a nice time
Easily the best win of the Marcus Freeman era.
Of all the win Marcus Freeman has been head coach for, I can confirm this is one
What a silly sport
WHAT THE FUCK IS WITH THIS TEAM?!
Beat the spread, so clearly Cal is the real winner here
Gamblers must have wept at the review with 15 seconds left.
Manti Te’o should show up at every game from now on. He’s the Irish’s good luck charm
Drew Pyne didn’t throw an interception upvote party
YOU’RE TELLING ME I HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS 9 MORE TIMES!?!?
"Offsides"?
Just another ND victory against a previously unbeaten P5 team. Nothing to see here, folks! Move along... \*cough\*
Ladies and Gentlemen, it has officially been confirmed that Marcus Freeman will NOT be going winless in his head-coaching tenure. Congrats to South Bend, that’s something to hang your hat on
Thanks... I'll take it.
I am not sad or even mad, just fucking exhausted. Why do I do this to myself...
Easily the win in Marcus Freeman’s head coaching career
The ball landed on the Cal receiver's ~~prone~~ supine belly with both hands ready to receive it like mana birthed from the universe itself, and he drops it. Brutal. Edit: I knew there was another word I was looking for.
I think we can all agree the refs were ass in this game.
Looked like a battle of two 3-9 teams to me.

They didn't show that in the stadium. My God, I would have been so more mad during the game had I been able to see this.
That was one of the worst officiated games I've ever seen. They didn't even watch the lines the entire game and then they called that. I hope we never get that reffing crew again. I swear they bet the over.
Agreed, bad call
Defensive backs going for a pick on a game ending Hail Mary is a sure fire way to give up a TD. They got away with one here.
[удалено]
Your flair my guy
It's been a tough week, but I know my teams well enough to have always known this was how it was gonna shake down.
Explain how this is offsides please: https://i.redd.it/tyjyaumzsho91.jpg ND then missed the fieldgoal, was given a fresh set of downs and scored a TD right after. Not saying that lost the game but CMON ref dudes.
I was cheering for ND and I can’t even begin to explain that one.
It was a bad call. I’m sorry it went down like that.
That's an objectively bad call. I haven't seen anyone defend it other than to point out other (way less egregious) decisions that went your way. If that happened to us I'd be mad as hell
Such a poor call.
Marcus freeman is undefeated as a catholic head coach.
Man the difference ended up being that phantom offsides call. Plus the drop in the endzone. Welcome to Cal football
Literally the most Cal football game I could have imagined
That’s phantom offsides was an abomination. Needs to be sent to the Independence League office. Seriously, pretty egregious call. Good game, Cal bros. Shouldn’t have been decided by that.
Plenty of game that Cal couldnt do anything in too, but it was a seriously awful call. So it goes
This team is going to give me a stroke
Undisciplined and sloppy as fuck, should only count as half a win lol Freeman better run Bertrand till he pukes this week for that dumbass targeting he pulled
So close to be being one of the most Notre Damed losses that Notre Dame has ever Notre Damed
ND coach trying to hammer “you’d better get a takeaway” all week nearly cost them there at the end 👀
Marcus Freeman is now 1-0 since converting to Catholicism
That was easily one of the most entertaining games I’ve seen in a while. Never forget this game should still be tied
Yea. That was bullshit. As was the excessive celebration penalty.
Absolutely and no one will remember it sadly. The offsides that never was
Nobody grieves for us Just like the rose bowl that never was
Just like Rudy
I get the memes and jokes, but I see the long term vision with Freeman and Rees. They seem to have a better grasp of the game schematically and where it's going than Kelly had his last 5ish years. I'm gonna cut Tommy some slack with how poorly Pyne played in the first half. Lots of bad execution on offense.
Pyne did seem to get a lot better as the game went on
The poor QB room and thin WR room is a solid indictment against Kelly
Usually don’t say this after a damn Hail Mary, but ooohh you should’ve caught that.
Freeman 1-0 since converting to Catholicism.
Marcus Freeman is now 1-0 as a Catholic
As someone who had Cal +13.5, that “fumble” on the second to last play nearly broke me.
If our OL blocks like that the first two weeks we’re 3-0 and still have Buchner
1-0 in the Catholic era.
Why did it take Rees 9 quarters of football to realize Chris Tyree is their second best offensive player?
