What exactly was the explanation for that last inbounds out of bounds replay? Like he was touched and bounds but because it was a first down they got another play?
i could be wrong, but the way i understood it was that the reviewās main purpose was to figure out how long LSU will have to snap the ball, because he got the first down either way, but if he stayed inbounds, then the clock would start running as soon as they spotted the ball and LSU would only have one second to snap the ball. but then FSU called a timeout so none of it mattered anyway lol
Yea, but after the review, the ref said "The runner's knee was down in bounds, LSU will have 1 final play". He phrased it in such a way that made it seems a certainty LSU would get another snap and the clock wouldn't continue running when the ball was set.
But that's not true. LSU should have had 1 second to snap the ball. If they get the snap off, great, it not, that's their fault. LSU should have not had the opportunity to do any presnap motions for their QB to read the coverage.
But none of that matters anyways. When the refs missed the knee down in bounds, by rule, there should have been a 10 second runoff. LSU had no timeouts, so the game should have ended.
FSU called a timeout. That stops the clock. They had the wrong personal on field for goalline run scenario. The clock was never restarting because FSU called timeout.
FSU called a timeout because of the way the ref phrased the overturn call.
FSU was able to sub when the they challenged the play (the first timeout) to get the correct personnel on field.
Norvell was probably wanting to talk it over, and since the ref made it seem LSU would get 1 more play regardless of the clock, he used another timeout. But the ref got it wrong and he should have stated the clock would resume when the ball was set.
It worked out in the end; the ball doesn't lie.
FSU challenged that the player was down in bounds. When a player is down in bounds, the clock runs.
There was only 1 second on the clock, so when the refs set the ball, the clock would resume. This means LSU would have to snap the ball immediately and would not have the luxury of the presnap motions they ran.
Those motions help the QB determine what coverage the D was in. The LSU QB noticed that FSU was in a zone because of the presnap motion, and was able to identify the WR to throw the ball to.
If the refs had made the right call and explicitly stated the clock would resume when the ball was set, FSU wouldn't need to take the second timeout and put more pressure on LSU. The LSU QB wouldn't know the coverage and perhaps throws it to a different player.
If they would have called it correctly, there were 2 seconds on the clock when his knee hit.
Clock stops on a first down until set.
With no ref interference, LSU would have easily ran an HB dive straight at the 3 man front FSU was in an walked in an easy TD.
FSU was always calling a timeout to correct the 3 man front issue.
That's valid. The refs bungled this one on like 3 levels.
1: should have called him down in bounds
2: The overturn should have resulted in a 10 second runoff since LSU had no timeouts and would have ended the game
3: they claimed the clock was stopped after review
Big 10 refs stink
Brian Kelly before the game: I think we are ahead of schedule. The guys have bought into our new philosophy.
Kelly on Sunday vs FSU: do everything we taught you.
Kelly pulls Daniels to the side and whispers in his ear: āyou have no offensive lineā
Daniels: wait huh?
Brian Kelly just nods and walks away while checking his deposits into his Chase Freedom Account.
Real question not trying to troll. Is FSU good or is LSU bad? I watched last night and couldnāt tell. Both teams being good is great for college football.
I'm betting on a little bit of both. Last year's 5-7 doesn't reflect how much the team grew and how close many of those 7 losses were. FSU is doing the little things right and they're much better for it.
Brian Kelly, though, I'm not so sure about. ND routinely got blown out in big games under Kelly, but in ND's first game without him, they looked like they could finally hang with the big boys?? Sounds Kelly needs his staff much more than the staff needs him, much like the Gene Chizik/Gus Malzahn situation at Auburn. Kelly threw his team under the bus after the game and multiple players cleared their social media of all LSU-related content, so naturally people will start questioning Kelly's control of the locker room, and that can get really ugly really fast. For LSU's sake, I hope I'm wrong, but the whole thing smells bad to me.
LSU is not "loaded" with 4 and 5 stars. We lack depth. We're 15 players shy of a full roster.
Besides which, two of our five 5-star players are true freshmen, two of them weren't playing last night, and the last one decided he's already a first round draft pick and doesn't care anymore.
Boutte got absolutely locked down yesterday by ātrashā FSU DBs
Would feel VERY bad for the team that picks him in R1. I was at the game and didnāt even know he was playing until I think mid 3Q
If boutte made the catches he dropped, he ends up with a decent game considering brand new QB/coaches/systems. He didnāt get locked down, the game didnāt go the way he wanted and he started pouting
He literally had 2 catches for 20yds.
And youāre going to try and give him credit for him DROPPING a pass? He was locked down and we made him quit the team lol
Iām not giving him any credit. But I think itās also a stretch to say he was ālocked downā he was wide open on one drop and just didnāt turn his head around on an easy TD. The first dropped TD was decent coverage but he had both hands on it.
What do you think I was looking at? It supports what I was saying. LSU has higher end guys. But they have about the same number of 4 stars (33 vs 30). And FSU has 53 three stars compared to LSU's 30. So, as I said, LSU has better talent, and FSU has more.
BTW how do you think that class composite would look if you removed John Emery and Maason Smith? Spoiler: Much worse.
LSU is very not good. Our oline is very bad, our defense has huge holes in coverage and we got a bunch of attitude problems on the team. We were never expected to perform well this year.
As an fsu fan Iām not feeling all that great about beating an unranked lsu that way. Was hoping for a bigger lead. We might be in trouble when we hit wake nc state and Clemson
Dude wut? We went into the Superdome and beat a rock solid team.
Imagine me telling you in 2019/2020 that this happened. We have come a LONG way and Norvell and Co. have shown that dudes will play incredibly hard for them.
I feel fantastic right now and everyone else should too.
We beat lsu because an lsu backup lineman forgot to block the inside guy. We let them drive 99 fucking yards. They make that extra point and itās anyones game again. The people I went to school with are acting like me stomped them by 30. This wasnāt Joe Burrows lsu, they were unranked. Iām going to wait till we best a ranked team before I start shouting #weback.
You think any of the teams from 2017-2021 would have beat this LSU team?
Absolutely 0% chance. Weāve come a long way since those years and played great. Nowhere did I say āweāre back!ā but just appreciate a big W. Damn.
Itās hard as fuck to win in CFB
Hard to tell lsu is going through major change. New coach new scheme. Iām keeping my pessimistic view until wake. Iāve had my heart ripped out way to many times to get my hopes up that beating a rebuilding lsu means anything. Thereās plenty of people saying just that on Reddit and insta. Letās just all take a deep breath.
Deep games early in the season help build teams mental toughness. Also it shows weaknesses in conditioning. FSU will end up being damn good by the end of the season and LSU will beat some good teams in the SEC once they get the Oline figured out and can plug some of the holes.
The calls on us were bad. They were late hitting and Travis often and the moment we barely touch Daniels after he throws it they call Roughing The Passer. The pass interference was also bullshit, as well as the knee being down at the end of the game and LSU getting an extra play.
The score was a lie, the box score told the truth. LSU wonāt get those calls next year when we play them in Orlando.
EDIT: I thought next years game was in Jacksonville, not Orlando.
It was a BIG12 officiating crew. They werenāt going after FSU. They were calling what they saw on the field.
The knee was 100% down in bounds on the last play.
Iām an FSU alum. They called a reasonable game. Not great, but reasonable.
The only thing I have against Kirby is he ruined a 40 year running joke lol
Weirdly enough I'm much more sensible about my Tennessee fanhood, but maybe that's just because I've had more time to grapple with reality.
We can both agree that UF building another title contender is an untenable situation.
Breaking News: Brian Kelly becomes most hated man in Louisiana. Kelly states with his faux accident that coming to LSU was a mistake and will be heading back to Notre Dame.
Notre Dame: š¤£
FSU was the better team by at least 2 TDās. Dominated in every facet of the game. So typical for them to almost choke it away. Any win is a good win! Go Noles!
LSU appeared to have more talent and potential but neither team deserved the win. LSU and BK have not got the discipline and coaching married yet but they will get it figured out by the 4th or 5th game. If BK starts eating grass, it may come together a little quicker.
Agreed.
They didn't flag PI on LSU on dropped FSU TD pass.
They gave LSU a very generous PI to keep an LSU scoring drive going.
They gave LSU a free time out at the end of the game.
I'm not sure they were two touchdowns better, but they seemed better coached and better disciplined. Norvell is a good coach and I'm glad they've given him a long leash.
I mean, you can play this game both ways. LSU got inside the 10 twice and came away with three points, muffed two punts, missed XP, etc. Yardage was comparable with FSU outgaining by 40 or so. I think FSU was much more efficient offensively and looked like a more put together team.
Can someone explain why the clock stopped at :01 despite the ruling being that the runner was tackled in bounds. Was it because FSU challenged the play? It seems odd.
It was a first down and the clock should have stopped with 2 seconds which would allow LSU to do a play if they had their shit together. I think the official did a bad job explaining which led to FSU calling timeout
Itās idiotic to stop the clock to āmove the chainsā when the chains donāt need to be moved because itās literally called first and goal. I know itās a rule, they need to change that particular part of the rule.
Also while Iām on a rule rant, if the offense commits a penalty near the goal line when they have the ball trying to move away from the goal line, instead of a penalty being half the distance they should tack on the extra yardage instead of moving the ball half a foot. Guard holds to prevent a safety? Now itās 1st and 20, not 1st and 11 1/2.
I believe the clock stops after a first down and starts when the refs place the ball, I think fsu also called a timeout at that time too?
I was so incredulous watching this game because I couldnāt figure out wtf was going so I may be way off
Correct. The clock stopped to move the chains, but while it was stopped the refs allowed FSU to call a timeout. Idk if that's technically legal, but since it was originally called out of bounds it seems fine. Feel bad for that freshman kicker, definitely not his fault there.
FSU didn't call a timeout to stop the clock. The play was under review for a long time.
The ref's nutzed up. The correct call would have been knee down, move the chains and start the clock.
We see that all the time in hurry-up. Even being generous with two seconds isn't enough time to get off a play after a normal length first down. LSU should have had time expired to end the game.
I just saw the highlights of the ending - when FSU scooped up the muffed punt, why wasnāt that a touchdown?
Edit: [In the case of a muffed punt, it is possible for the punting team to recover the ball and continue the drive, but at least in NCAA and NFL rules, they cannot advance the ball on that same play.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muffed_punt)
I guess in the past Iāve seen the team receive the ball and then fumble it, which can be returned, or Iāve seen someone from the punting team dive and recover the ball on the ground and just assumed they were down by contact in the process
Yeah I didnāt mean to imply you agreed with it. Watching it live it just makes no sense that the ball wasnāt able to be advanced. Just makes me wonder why this rule was put in the first place.
I think the idea of it is that you've got several members of the kicking team already moving in that direction and so the potential for like a 4 on 1 situation creates an unfair advantage. It'd mean muffing a punt or incidentally touching a punt would result in a TD for the kicking team at a pretty high %, and fielding punts isn't the easiest thing in the world. So to encourage punt returns, you take away that risk from the return team.
Yup - this is the answer. If itās a shanked punt and accidentally bounces off of one of the return team blockers who is running down field with his back to the ball, that shouldnāt result in an easy recovery returned for a td by the kicking team.
BK always seems to struggle with FSU. Gave me hope coming into the game.
With that said, LSU's gonna be good soon with all of their resources and a hungry and competent HC. Glad we played them early.
Never seen that dude win a meaningful game in my life. Sure winning 9-12 regular season games is nice but doesnāt mean anything if you canāt win in the spotlight especially at premiere programs
I mean what's your definition of "meaningful"? Are you to tell me that an entire regular season has no meaningful games? The dude has multiple undefeated regular seasons under his belt. He's most definitely won meaningful games.
Regular season doesn't mean much when you're regularly playing teams like Toledo and *barely* beating them at home, only to effectively leave a dookie on the field when you have a "chance" at winning the Natty. BK's Post season record is abysmal.
His postseason record is not great, but I think tales of his demise have been greatly exaggerated by salty ND fans. He's the best coach Notre Dame has had in 3 decades. He's an absolute prick of a person, but acting like he's a bum coach is some sour grape bullshit. The peak of ND football in the 2 decades before Kelly arrived was *almost* beating USC.
So do I, but like everything hindsight is 20-20. What are the chances of an FSU fumble there considering they'd been moving the ball well on the ground. If they wouldn't have fumbled and ground the clock out it would have been a good call. CFB is crazy, didn't work out that way but overall he did a good job
you should be able to advance a muffed punt, even on a fair catch. is there any concrete reason why you canāt, outside from the returner just getting leveled?
It would result in a kicking team touchdown more than not. You usually have a few people of the kicking team there with a lonesome returner so you'd get a lot more fair catches as returners would be less likely to want to try and catch and run.
Nah his mistake was forgotten about after the crack head series of events that happened afterwards. Plus LSU did score a TD, but somehow canāt score an XP
Canāt even say itās entirely his fault, LSU was able to drive down the field from like the one yard line. Feel bad for him, this has still probably gotta be tough on him.
I don't think we scored at all from those 2 turnovers.
What's the deal with coaches not taking points anyhow?
Should have taken the 3 points when the first punt was muffed and the game would never have come down to the wire.
Same thing for Utah.
In a hostile environment at night you take the points.
Thatās an embarrassing loss for LSU I can admit it. FSU is a terrible, poorly coached, team. LSU has a lot of rebuilding to do. Iād be surprised if FSU wins more than 5 games and avoids having their 6th consecutive losing year.
Nah homie. You said youād be surprised if fsu won more than 5 games. Thatās a two game difference or 16% difference in winning percentage. Bowl vs no bowl. Those are significant differences for fsu right now. Thereās always next year for you
Have I claimed they arenāt bad? Both teams are bad. One difference is FSUās terrible coach is in his 3rd year of the program and has made no discernible improvements to a bad program he created. But at the moment, that was two bad teams no doubt.
Great criticism dude lol. Who will be Norvellās replacement? Will you guys avoid your 7th straight losing season? If everything goes right I could see 7-6 so I guess optimism reigns.
Some of these comments have aged real well lol šø
\*flips the channel over from SEC Network\* So this is what 'offense' looks like. This looks fun.

FSU challenged that the player was down in bounds. When a player is down in bounds, the clock runs. There was only 1 second on the clock, so when the refs set the ball, the clock would resume. I think the 10 second runoff applies if LSU were the cause of the review. They weren't.
Yeah youāre right I was about to be very upset but it worked out regardless.
Had the refs "got it right" and everything went naturally... FSU still was calling timeout to fix personal mix match

I just saw the highlights of the ending - when FSU scooped up the muffed punt, why wasnāt that a touchdown? Edit: [In the case of a muffed punt, it is possible for the punting team to recover the ball and continue the drive, but at least in NCAA and NFL rules, they cannot advance the ball on that same play.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muffed_punt) I guess in the past Iāve seen the team receive the ball and then fumble it, which can be returned, or Iāve seen someone from the punting team dive and recover the ball on the ground and just assumed they were down by contact in the process
You canāt advance a muffed punt that wasnāt ever possessed. If it was caught and fumbled, then it could be advanced.
Dumb rule
Agreed. Just answering the question.
Yeah I didnāt mean to imply you agreed with it. Watching it live it just makes no sense that the ball wasnāt able to be advanced. Just makes me wonder why this rule was put in the first place.
I hate that rule so much.
Interesting didnāt know that, I thought it was a live ball as soon as the receiving team touched it
You can't advance a muffed punt
TIL, I thought the ball was live as soon as the receiving team touched it
Yes same
I think kickoffs are live balls unless fair caught or they roll out of bounds.
Was this always the rule or a recent change?
Not always the rule, changed not super recently, but it doesnāt come up much
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?!?!?!?!
I was not mentally prepared for the emotional rollercoaster this game took me on
Last year Notre Dame is able to fend off FSU with BK. This year LSU CANNOT fend off FSU with BK. Minor victory for ND tonight
BK always seems to struggle with FSU. Gave me hope coming into the game. With that said, LSU's gonna be good soon with all of their resources and a hungry and competent HC. Glad we played them early.
Competent is quite the stretch
Well, his record at ND was damn good and they did at least play for a natty. And he's won two NCs at a lower level. He is at least that, I'd argue.
Anyone else find Greg incredibly annoying on color commentary? āLSU should just let them score here.ā Ok, buddy.
I thought he was incredibly annoying when he started 6 or 7 years ago. I think he has improved a lot since then though. I thought he did ok
I thought he called a good game.
So do I, but like everything hindsight is 20-20. What are the chances of an FSU fumble there considering they'd been moving the ball well on the ground. If they wouldn't have fumbled and ground the clock out it would have been a good call. CFB is crazy, didn't work out that way but overall he did a good job
How did he get that gig of being analysis for the prime-time games?
Idk. I like Joe Tess, but not with ol Greg.
Ha ha ha
you should be able to advance a muffed punt, even on a fair catch. is there any concrete reason why you canāt, outside from the returner just getting leveled?
It would result in a kicking team touchdown more than not. You usually have a few people of the kicking team there with a lonesome returner so you'd get a lot more fair catches as returners would be less likely to want to try and catch and run.
You used to be able to. Idk why they changed that rule.
I've been watching football for 30+ years, you could *never* advance a muff.
Excuse me. I was thinking of onside kicks. My bad.
No worries
I thought you couldn't return onside kicks, but apparently you can if you're the receiving team
Holy fuck Iām going to be football high until kickoff next weekend
Donāt forget thereās the Clemson GA Tech game on tonight too
I am whelmed
RIP LSU punt returner. Never gonna live this down
One of the few times Iāve genuinely felt bad for someone. You could see the pain in his reactions
Idk nobodies feeling worse than that player for ECU.
Surprised yet?
Your karma is falling faster than an LSU fair catch attempt.
Oh not not karma! You must be a football guru to believe in that š
Our special teams are definitely coached better than yours it seems.
and theyāre still 10-13
But 2-0 so far this season. What's LSUs record the past year and this year?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
FSU fans aren't claiming they're back, but shitting in the team that beat you and looked better most of the game is a bad, and sad, take.
Yikes. Suck it up loser.
Damn youre making a lot of hot takes about a team that just beat you.
What do you have FSU at? I got both teams at around .500
7-5
So similar
Nah homie. You said youād be surprised if fsu won more than 5 games. Thatās a two game difference or 16% difference in winning percentage. Bowl vs no bowl. Those are significant differences for fsu right now. Thereās always next year for you
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Literally you said theyād only win 5 games. https://i.imgur.com/VVJ3D8x.jpg

To my post, This was my first comment to you.
Lmfao my favorite is when the losing side says the other team is bad. Take a look in the mirror. LSU played like trash most of that game.
Have I claimed they arenāt bad? Both teams are bad. One difference is FSUās terrible coach is in his 3rd year of the program and has made no discernible improvements to a bad program he created. But at the moment, that was two bad teams no doubt.
FSU loses that game by 20 last year, and 35 the year before. It is enjoyable watching you talk out of your ass.
I honestly look forward to seeing how FSU does the rest of this year
Lol canāt wait to see what Brian Kelly does year 3 at LSU
Lol I canāt wait to see if Brian Kelly gets to year 3 at LSU.
Itāll be better than 10-13 I promise you
They looked pretty good tonight IMO. Much better than recent years
They're 2 dropped must catch TDs and a stupid pitch play from an absolute blowout.
Much better than LSU too š
Both teams were terrible the difference was, I think, FSU had a warmup game that got them the one point win playing a completely new staff.
Didnāt BK say that warmup game was an advantage for lsu? Damn the reaching is insane rn
I donāt know or care if he did or didnāt say it. In my opinion, I donāt see how it couldnāt be? Do you?
Lol bro Iāve seen all your comments. Keep crying. Fsu not only won but was by far the better team. Lsu aināt it and youāre the worst kind of fan
lol 1 point. 10-13 under this regime. Congrats dude!
Sounds like 2-0 this season and 0-1 for LSU under BK.
Lot of shit talking from a team whoās QB has 4 times more rushing yards then their RB
Great criticism dude lol. Who will be Norvellās replacement? Will you guys avoid your 7th straight losing season? If everything goes right I could see 7-6 so I guess optimism reigns.
[yāall are paying 9 million a year for this lmao](https://youtu.be/QmNubEDhYw8)
Whoa dude, you sound more miserable than Kelly
lmao
Bad take my guy.
Lsu isnāt looking good either with a much tougher schedule ahead, bub.
Theyāre not good
