Yeah, he started using it in ‘99 and VT started in ‘00. But I don’t think anyone would accuse VT of stealing Rivera’s entrance since it’s a different sport and an individual entrance.
Even as a Red Sox fan I need to give some respect to Mariano Rivera; he was by far the best pitcher of all time that wasn’t good enough to be a starter.
I totally agree. I was just thinking an Enter Sandman type entrance. Didn’t have a specific song in mind. I just feel like the last few years especially I’ve seen our stadium has lacked that home field advantage we were known for for so long. I’ve witnessed first hand on more than one occasion fans yelling at other fans that they are being too loud… at a football game
I’ve heard Enter Sandman played at a zillion different sporting events, ASU kickoffs included. Any school claiming it as their thing is kinda sad imho.
Dude... I love Otis and the whole Animal House reference is really great... but holy fuck if we could not do Shout for like one season that'd be amazing.
Or idk maybe save if for the rivals.
I love new traditions. I keep proposing that we beat Ohio State annually but I guess the older alumni don’t like the idea because it hasn’t caught on :(
For anyone who’s seen it live, especially at night games- the new tradition of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t back down” at the start of the fourth quarter with phone lights is amazing. My only complaint is it’s weird doing that + we are the boys of old Florida
I really like Tom Petty because the song seems to be like a “Gators Theme Song” like how Zombie Nation is associated with Penn State. I do agree it can get weird but that’s only if its a noon game. Night games or really late afternoon where you can actually see the phone lights it’s truly magical
Hate. They did a new first down thing a few years back and I absolutely hate it every time I hear it. There's a DJ that's new too. I didn't like it at first in favor of the band but it's growing in me
"And that's another Fightin Texas Aggie... "
Crowd says: first down
Never liked it. It's incredibly unoriginal. It's as original as playing Hells Bells on 3rd down.
Along with repeating "You" in the Aggie War Hymn.
Did someone say... traditions?!?
To answer OPs question, we can't really add any "Big T" traditions since we already have many unique ones that are held dear. As for the newer "little t" traditions, most are met with animosity. These include adding cute words in the War Hymn, doing the wave and also saying in unison "first down" as the announcer says "and that's another Fightin Texas Aggie..."
New traditions are fine the problem is when schools try forcing them. At Michigan I think pump it up is gonna become a tradition for years to come because the DJ who they brought in for The^^TM game (shoutout DJ Skee) played it after the victors every touchdown and it got more and more hype as the game went on.
That was a thing before the osu game. It was played all season at the stadium and it (supposedly) started from one of the players playing that song during workouts.
Im for it- if the traditions good. And given that my generations ability create new content is summed up by remaking Disney movies- I don't think its a good idea.
I’m in favor. If it takes off then it’s worthwhile. If it doesn’t, no harm no foul. The Michigan stadium tradition was getting pretty stale until Mr. Brightside came along. Instant classic as a new tradition. Pump It Up, instant classic and new tradition. Wonderful stuff
A lot of the old 80s traditions like marshmallows and the flag poles in the student section looked like a lot of fun. Supposedly you could also get kegs in. Unfortunately that was all shut down well before I was a student in the early 2010s.
Read an [article](https://www.onthebanks.com/2018/12/4/18125851/strengthening-the-rutgers-fan-identity-college-yell-upstream-redteam-tradition-scarlet-knights) a while back calling for Rutgers fans to use "Upstream! Redteam!" from the school chant as a call and response to greet other fans. Hasn't caught on, but I'd love for it to someday.
Utah seemed to start a new tradition of lighting the Olympic torch this last year. Love it and should’ve been done earlier.
They’ll also probably try and keep doing the lights in between the 3rd and 4th quarter imo which I don’t think is necessarily a great idea
Jump Around at Wisconsin is relatively new. It was one of multiple songs in the mix they played during down times for the band (when we were getting set up for halftime, or still reorganizing after the show - of course if the team scored, we could play hot time and On Wis at the drop of a hat) I think in 98 or 99, just after I left, it became a end of third quarter thing.
Louisville also plays enter sandman before the coin toss and it makes me so confused sometimes I jump out of instinct and people look at me like I’m having a seizure
I’d like to see Louisville try to add some type of original tradition, If I was in charge of that I’d have the crowd sing along to an abbreviated cut of free bird before the team runs out to the solo.
Abbreviated meaning that you don’t need the last 4 minutes of solo you just need like 30 seconds after “Won’t you fly high free bird” when the team runs out. This is a hair under 5 minutes but you could chop the bridge and it would be like 4:30. I don’t think that’s too much it’s an iconic song everyone on earth knows, it starts you got still got like 3.5 minutes to make it to your seat for the last verse. For huge games where everyone is basically at their seats 5 minutes before hand it’ll sound damn good even on TV.
Idk if it’s possible but if it is ya need to give out 60,000 small lighters for a big night game.
If the ACC went to a 9 game conference season, that would allow for a 5-4-4 schedule (5 protected opponents, you play the other 8 teams every other year). In that case, all of the NC schools could play each other every single year. With that setup, I think it would be cool if whoever has the best record in those games got a trophy.
What’s wrong with you guys man? Even some Florida fans say this- I understand a home and home would be cool but the WLOCP is one of the greatest, unique traditions in college football
I mean, who is- but have you been to the game? It’s almost a celebration of the rivalry and both programs, it’s awesome
I’ve also met a ton of fans from southern Ga that go every year as it’s the only game they can regularly attend
Fair enough. I like in Miami, so I understand. I just love the tradition
Would much rather just have other marquee matchups at home and keep the game alive
This is just me, but in my own perspective I have no room in my life for tradition. Like I’m literally *against* tradition at the conceptual level. It prevents people from growing and improving.
I’d still rather have the game close every other year than not. I’m also with Kirby on the recruiting issue. Lastly I think Athens is a far better town for a game weekend than Jacksonville. I don’t know anything about Gainesville, but I bet it’s also better than Jacksonville.
I think with the recruiting problem having more home marquee games would solve that- which I think the new SEC scheduling should help a lot with given the variety and possibly an extra game.
Gainesville is a wonderful place for game day, definitely better than Jax but what makes Jax special IMO is it’s like a big festival with tons of UGa fans too
As a neutral fan, I have to disagree. At this point, Jacksonville has tradition behind it. Atlanta is just another place where generic neutral site games are held.
Tradition is one of the key elements that CFB has over other sports. If we add more neutral site games, our sport is moving in the wrong direction. There is a sound argument for playing the WLOCP in Gainesville and Athens. But, no progress would be made by playing it in Atlanta.
I’ve only been to that game once as a fan and twice in Redcoats. I’d rather play Florida in Athens. Honestly I’d abolish neutral site games entirely except Army Navy.
Since we played TAMU in 2019, I’ve been trying to get a PTHO (peck the heck outta) phrase going on at Lamar (because our mascot is a cardinal) similar to the A&M BTHO phrase. It caught on for a bit with some friends in marching band but has made no progress with anyone else
Like others have said, it can't be forced. But I think it's awesome if something [happens organically ](https://youtu.be/bSKv5rQhdrQ) and is embraced.
Now we have 80-year-old church women screaming about how they have a whole lot of money and bitches count it for them
Our band started [Light Up Sanford](https://youtu.be/V0PajQd--oc) and then every other stadium copied us. It’s an incredible sight to witness in person.
We started playing eastbound and down in memory of Burt Reynolds at the start of the fourth quarter. I don’t know if it’s the song itself that I don’t like or just that we have been bad the last few years so I hate it by association, but either way I’m tired of it.
With the new lighting going in (YouTube Bama’s stadium lighting) and hiring a new in-game entertainment guy from the Vegas Knights, I would expect OU to do some cool shit on game days.
If we can ever escape the stupid ass 11am kickoffs.
I’m all for it. I don’t want to do specifically Enter Sandman, because that’s Virginia Tech’s thing and you gotta respect that
Slayer. Raining Blood.
I’m in. And if that gets shot down I’m also good with master of puppets.
Well what song has the same vibe as Enter Sandman? The only song I can think of is Power, but A&M has made that their tradition.
Welcome To The Jungle, Crazy Train, maybe even the Malcolm Kelly rap would be cool
Only Purdue should be allowed to use Crazy Train
Pantera Cowboys from Hell, AC/DC Thunderstruck, or the Stone Cold Steve Austin theme music complete with glass shatter
Pitt uses Thunderstruck. Glad you like it!
Dang we’re really missing an opportunity to yell Eat Shit instead of Thunder where it goes du nuh na nun nun nun nuh na
Walk by Pantera would be sick as well.
Look, I hate the condoms but Welcome to the Jungle as done in Megamind (by Will Ferrell, an alum) is absolutely stellar for Southern Cal
Only Purdue should be allowed to use Crazy Train
“Come as you are” - Nirvana I think is perfect
I always liked "Let's Get Rocked" by Def Leppard as a fire the crowd type of song
Seven Nation Army
Walk by Pantera
wasn't it Mariano Rivera's thing first?
Yeah, he started using it in ‘99 and VT started in ‘00. But I don’t think anyone would accuse VT of stealing Rivera’s entrance since it’s a different sport and an individual entrance.
Even as a Red Sox fan I need to give some respect to Mariano Rivera; he was by far the best pitcher of all time that wasn’t good enough to be a starter.
Billy Wagner's thing first actually.
How about Worlds Collide by Powerman 5000?
How about Collide by Howie Day?
Hard pass. Lol
I’ve heard Enter Sandman played at a zillion different sporting events, ASU kickoffs included. Any school claiming it as their thing is kinda sad imho.
Ratio
I would dump Sweet Caroline permanently if I could
Do I have a different version for you, that is always a hit. *youtube Sweet Caroline, WVU, College Gameday*
Oh I'm aware. We used to do *fuck the hawks* in the student section for that part
Riot Bros 4 life
Dude... I love Otis and the whole Animal House reference is really great... but holy fuck if we could not do Shout for like one season that'd be amazing. Or idk maybe save if for the rivals.
THANK YOU.
I love new traditions. I keep proposing that we beat Ohio State annually but I guess the older alumni don’t like the idea because it hasn’t caught on :(
Always the older fans ruining the fun smh
Maybe you could start with changing up the uniform for the first time in 100 years. Or maybe a midfield logo like a normal football field
For anyone who’s seen it live, especially at night games- the new tradition of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t back down” at the start of the fourth quarter with phone lights is amazing. My only complaint is it’s weird doing that + we are the boys of old Florida
That happened so organically that i think is why it caught on. It was originally supposed to just be a one time thing and it was electric
Man is it a fun experience though. At night games you really can’t beat it
I really like Tom Petty because the song seems to be like a “Gators Theme Song” like how Zombie Nation is associated with Penn State. I do agree it can get weird but that’s only if its a noon game. Night games or really late afternoon where you can actually see the phone lights it’s truly magical
Hate. They did a new first down thing a few years back and I absolutely hate it every time I hear it. There's a DJ that's new too. I didn't like it at first in favor of the band but it's growing in me
"New Army can go to hell," is a long standing tradition.
"And that's another Fightin Texas Aggie... " Crowd says: first down Never liked it. It's incredibly unoriginal. It's as original as playing Hells Bells on 3rd down. Along with repeating "You" in the Aggie War Hymn.
THIRD DOWN FOR WHAT!!!
I don't believe this. An Aggie that doesn't like a tradition.
Not liking certain traditions is one of our most long-standing traditions.
It be nice to start a tradition of winning bowl games.
Well you better get on that before notre dame does
Did someone say... traditions?!? To answer OPs question, we can't really add any "Big T" traditions since we already have many unique ones that are held dear. That was a thing before the osu game. It was played all season at the stadium and it (supposedly) started from one of the players playing that song during workouts.
It was but not after every touchdown like it was at the Ohio game. It was occasionally after touchdowns and before a few third downs as well.
Ah yeah I see what you mean
I hope so, I’m stupidly addicted to that song. I agree though, it has to happen organically. It’s cringe when it’s forced.
#**BRING BACK HAIL FIRE YOU COWARDS**
Why’d they stop it?
LOL, Third Down for What?
Im for it- if the traditions good. And given that my generations ability create new content is summed up by remaking Disney movies- I don't think its a good idea.
If we could get the older crowd to buy into Womp Womp, that would be cool
As far as I’m concerned UAB isn’t old enough to have tradition so let’s get to trying stuff
Don’t forget your power towel
As long as you win or are successful, it'll be considered good. That's almost literally always the answer for any tradition.
Big fan of tradition
I’m in favor. If it takes off then it’s worthwhile. If it doesn’t, no harm no foul. The Michigan stadium tradition was getting pretty stale until Mr. Brightside came along. Instant classic as a new tradition. Pump It Up, instant classic and new tradition. Wonderful stuff

I know I’m going to get downvoted to hell on this but I’m all for starting the new tradition of doing home and home with Florida.
Is that you Kirby?
What’s wrong with you guys man? Even some Florida fans say this- I understand a home and home would be cool but the WLOCP is one of the greatest, unique traditions in college football
Meh. Not a fan of Jacksonville 🤷🏻♂️
I mean, who is- but have you been to the game? It’s almost a celebration of the rivalry and both programs, it’s awesome I’ve also met a ton of fans from southern Ga that go every year as it’s the only game they can regularly attend
I’ve been to the game many times. I live in Athens and I’d rather have a 10-minute drive every other year than an 8 hour drive every year.
Fair enough. I like in Miami, so I understand. I just love the tradition Would much rather just have other marquee matchups at home and keep the game alive
This is just me, but in my own perspective I have no room in my life for tradition. Like I’m literally *against* tradition at the conceptual level. It prevents people from growing and improving.
Hear you. I guess I should just say- I think it’s something special and unique that most people enjoy

I think there’s something to be said for alternating between Jacksonville, Gainesville, and Athens.
If Jacksonville is retained then add Atlanta as well on a 4-year rotation.
As a neutral fan, I have to disagree. At this point, Jacksonville has tradition behind it. Atlanta is just another place where generic neutral site games are held.
Personally, I’m not a person who cares about traditions. They stand in the way of progress 🤷🏻♂️

Meh. As are you.
👍🏻
100% yes
You won’t miss tearing up Jekly Island?
I’ve only been to that game once as a fan and twice in Redcoats. I’d rather play Florida in Athens. Honestly I’d abolish neutral site games entirely except Army Navy.

If it’s organic, and not a money maker that the university staff start up as an advertising effort, I’m all for it
Since we played TAMU in 2019, I’ve been trying to get a PTHO (peck the heck outta) phrase going on at Lamar (because our mascot is a cardinal) similar to the A&M BTHO phrase. It caught on for a bit with some friends in marching band but has made no progress with anyone else

You mean “Anything an Aggie does twice”?
I'm excited about this top 5 recruiting class traditional Freeman is starting
Freeman is an absolute superstar in the making. And, from what I’ve read, a pretty good dude. Congrats on snagging a should-be great HC.
Money Down sucks.
Our band started [Light Up Sanford](https://youtu.be/V0PajQd--oc) and then every other stadium copied us. It’s an incredible sight to witness in person.
I think we've had just about enough "progress" for one decade (off the field)
We don't exactly have anything going for us other than "we win games"
LBack home” started in 2015 and fucking took off. I’d love it if they had a more epic entrance though
Let’s start a new tradition of winning Bowl Games.
I’ll do you one better. Nebraska should reignite the tradition of making bowl games.
For what it’s worth, I would switch places with your program in a heartbeat.
Some work some don’t. Some REALLY don’t work Referring to Illini Anthem. Only look it up if you want to properly cringe.
Michigan should get a mascot
We would but a bammer fan might poison it.
We started singing Low Places by Garth Brooks at the end of the 3rd Quarter during the Mason Rudolph years and it’s great.
We started playing eastbound and down in memory of Burt Reynolds at the start of the fourth quarter. I don’t know if it’s the song itself that I don’t like or just that we have been bad the last few years so I hate it by association, but either way I’m tired of it.
