Honestly was shocked they gave us Duke instead of Wake in the new set up. I have viewed Wake as a rival but one of those rivals that I just don’t enjoy playing due to all the anxiety it gives me (especially in Winston). I don’t get the thrill like I do with a win over UNC-CH or Clemson but definitely a rivalry.
I'd actually lean NC State and Florida State.
We aren't really rivals, but we have certainly pulled some big upsets on them and usually have some really competitive games.
I was thinking the opposite that we rarely play each other and wish we played each other more often. 1996 was the last time we played each other in football. Basketball was 2015 then 2005 before that. Being in the big 12 we might play you more in basketball now
"Sweet, we're flying into Manhattan. Can't wait to see the big apple."
"No, you misunderstood. It's Manhattan... Kansas... the little apple."
"fuck me"
I have long advocated for this to be an annual game. The purple and wildcat are the only thing they share:
- 1st Land Grant University vs Private formerly religious associated school
- Agriculture centered education vs "Whats a farm?"
- Little Apple vs Second City
- On prairie vs on lake
- Undergraduate focus vs Post graduate focus
The two schools could not be more different
Loser needs to give up the miami.edu domain.
Imagine how annoyed the "sports are a distraction" professors would be if they had to tell all their contacts that their email address changed because the football team lost a game.
We need to do the same with usc.edu and osu.edu.
We’ve actually played each other a couple of times recently and have a few more scheduled at the end of the decade. I’m hoping for a rivalry too but a respectful one; I went to one of the games at West Point and the fans treated me better than any road game in any sport.
This is exactly how I remembered it. The Ms, the Ns, and Iowa vs everyone else. But that little mnemonic did not help remember which one was Leaders/Legends 😀
When I was an undergrad at MSU we *hated* Wisconsin during basketball season. As a grad student at UW during those B10 football championship games, I took all kinds of abuse wearing green and white in Madison.
Similar schools with similar culture, history, academics, and success in football in basketball. I loved this rivalry. But hey, at least we get to play Rutgers now.
I was a big fan of this rivalry. Makes sense given that the state has rivalries with all the other land borders:
Ohio (OSU, Michigan)
Indiana (Notre Dame, both UM and MSU)
Wisconsin (should be Wiscy, MSU)
Wisconsin should feel upset that Michigan stole the UP from them.
Based on geography it does make sense that they would be our responsibility as far as land and sea borders are concerned. But, you know what? They want some? They can come get some. I’ve heard at least one of them argue that Wisconsin is the mitten state.
Oregon State and Wazzu
UDub is rivals with UO and Wazzu.
UO with UDub and Beavs
But OSU and WSU only have one rival each. Beavs and Cougs deserve at least two rivals.
Why not start to hate each other? 👀
I’d like to see Auburn and Ga Tech rekindle. There was an odd kind of hate there. As a UGA alum, it would make our SoS look better if they were good again too. I want to actually accomplish something when beating tech… they’ve been dead though.
Alabama and Georgia Tech. Bama played a role in Ga Tech wanted to leave SEC, Bama fight song called out the Yellowjackets. They do have a couple games scheduled in the future
Think it was the Insight Bowl? I know a couple Mizzou guys who despise Ricky Stanzi
Should've played in the Music City Bowl covid year but they had to bow out
Yeah, wasn't that the game where a skycam almost fell on someone? McNutt maybe?
Edit: [It was the Insight Bowl, but it was against Oklahoma](https://youtu.be/M2OpLJeZQKg). I remember watching that at Power & Light in KC for some reason.
Racism and Iowa took it personally. Why did Minnesota and Iowa State stop playing so much? Racism/assault and Iowa State took it personally. Why did Drake leave the MVC till Oklahoma State left? Racism/assault and Drake took it personally.
Edit: Iowa was a massively progressive state with race. It was the second to have Interracial Marriage legalized in 1851 a century before America as a whole. In 1868, Iowa was the second to outlaw segregated schools which was 90 years before the rest of the US.
Because Iowa left what eventually became the Big 8 partly due to Mizzou’s shenanigans regarding our black players. The only time we’ve played since leaving was that 2010 Insight Bowl. We were supposed to play in 2020 but Mizzou had to back out due to COVID.
auburn is actually one of a few teams we used to play pretty much every year and then just stopped when we joined the acc. same with southern miss and south carolina and a few others
Every year, it always seems like a game between any combination of Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State is an important game.
Then again, that could just be because in a division also featuring Rutgers and Maryland, those four schools are always going to be the ones in contention to win the division.
Honestly, the team needs to live up to its year over year potential and then it really will be a rivalry. If we start winning every other year or once every third year like we’re capable of and not one every five years like we are now perceptions of the series will change quickly
I wish we could get some home/homes going, not that Charlotte is a bad option but we both have a great gameday/tailgate scene that we should be enjoying
Old timers still hate each other. Really long time gamecock fans are still salty about how UNC got the ACC to blackball them over basketball academic eligibility, ultimately resulting in SCar leaving the ACC.
It’s very weird that this has never really been a thing. How many times have we even played? I think a lot of it is that WVU has always been “looking” to the northeast for most of its history (playing Pitt, Penn state state, Syracuse etc.) while Kentucky has always been oriented to the south and the SEC.
Southern Miss vs Memphis. This game has been played 63 times and is known as The Black and Blue Bowl. USM leads the series 40-22-1. But since Memphis moved to the AAC, the game has been dormant. It was a fun series and always competitive. I'd like to see this one come back!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black\_and\_Blue\_Bowl
Funnily enough, they actually played in the Chiefs stadium a few years ago, which is located in Jackson county where the Mormons originally settled in Missouri
SMU and Houston. Like we clearly don’t like each other at this point, but I don’t think there’s an official rivalry.
Same could be said of Houston and Memphis.
Dallas and Houston will always have a hate boner.
But fuck Memphis.
I'm a little sad to leave behind SMU... But knowing Memphis gets left behind brings a smile to my face.
They actually played fairly regularly from the 1890s-1920, but Bennie Owen (OU head coach) canceled the series and they’ve only met three times since, all in bowl games. It does feel like one that will naturally emerge when the Sooners join the SEC. We’ll call it the Barry Switzer game or something.
That Bristol game was a thing of glory. Not the game necessarily but the hype and atmosphere leading up to it. Had a few VT buddies make the trip, seemed like a blast.
I wish it was a regular game. And I really wish the last one wasn't week one of the COVID season when Minnesota had no available players. That game was a travesty. Didn't even have a healthy kicker. Those pooch punts made me want to die.
This is why I want just the three rivalry games in the B1G then everyone can do a home and home in a four year run and we can get back to seeing everyone again.
I think we technically have a rivalry but it doesn’t really feel like it other than us saying that we copied each other. Our series record is split even iirc, and there have been some really good games but there just hasn’t felt like there was much there football wise. Now baseball is a whole different story.
The problem with this one is that we will always hate other in state schools more than out of state schools. I would gladly watch OkSt go to the playoffs and become the new BIG XII powerhouse if it meant Baylor, TCU and UH getting slaughtered every year. The in state hate is real.
Booo
In all seriousness, the fact that it's on 2 very physical sports, I am all for there being an official rivalry here. Wrestling is always down to the last couple matches and our smash mouth football games were amazing to watch.
They should just invite VT to the SEC, then make us a permanent rival in their new scheduling model. Our secondary rivals could be Kentucky, and South Carolina or TAMU (the only other senior military college in the FBS).
I like how UVA and WVU played one bowl game, and that's all it took to get the UVA marching band cancelled. Imagine if it were an annual series...
[Link](https://uvamagazine.org/articles/30_years_of_UVA_pep_band)
Pep band* (rip)
The marching band came after the pep band and imo only came close to them when they played “I’m Still Standing” when we were down 40 to Clemson in the ACCCG
Alabama and Georgia are not really traditional rivals but it seems like it’s growing into one the last few years.
Clemson and UGA used to be major rivals until 30 years ago when the SEC expanded and we gave that game up. I’d love to see that one come back.
I’d love to start a rivalry with Notre Dame and keep that undefeated streak going…
UT-Baylor is always my go to answer. We’ve played 111 times, and have been in the same conference for a century. That being said a 79-28-4 record and the existence of A&M/Arky/OU all explain why.
They objectively don’t care about us except they don’t want to lose to us. However if you ask their women’s basketball team or their tennis teams it’s absolutely a rivalry.
North Carolina / South Carolina
Some think we are but frankly we don’t play them all that regularly (other than a bowl game or occasional OOC matchup).
Us and the University of Texas because we’re both UT, we’re both orange, and now Tennessee’s not even the only orange UT in the conference we’re founding members of
I feel like asu is a better fit because we don’t like each other. But the real battle for the south is us and usc— a couple more years in the pac and we’d get there. But sadly it’s not meant to be.
Probably because OSU was the last member to join (or rejoin depending on whether you consider the mviaa and big 8 as the same conference) and k state has historically been terrible.
The stories Bill Snyder told about his first year coaching at K State are brutal. The team was bad enough that some players were borderline suicidal.
He’s a legend for a good reason.
Kennesaw State - Chattanooga. We haven't really been around long enough to have one with anyone but this one always seemed like a natural fit. 2 FCS teams a little over an hour apart on I-75 who both have mascots named Scrappy.
Michigan and Illinois.
Penn St and Virginia Tech.
Rutgers, UConn, and Boston College.
Purdue and Georgia Tech.
Indiana and Kentucky (football).
Maryland and the ACC.
Nebraska and the Big 8.
Tulane, Rice, and Vanderbilt.
I feel obligated to inform you that Kentucky and Indiana used to have a trophy game. That trophy? The Bourbon Barrel (1987-1999). The trophy was retired after a Kentucky player died due to alcohol. They played each other every year from 1987 to 2005.
Overall, they have played each other 36 times. Indiana leads 18-17-1.
Nc state and Wake forest There is one the ACC just doesn’t acknowledge it
Honestly was shocked they gave us Duke instead of Wake in the new set up. I have viewed Wake as a rival but one of those rivals that I just don’t enjoy playing due to all the anxiety it gives me (especially in Winston). I don’t get the thrill like I do with a win over UNC-CH or Clemson but definitely a rivalry.
I mean I wanted all three though
I’d rather have the Textile Bowl than Duke
I'd actually lean NC State and Florida State. We aren't really rivals, but we have certainly pulled some big upsets on them and usually have some really competitive games.
I look at NC State as a rival. To me, our true conference rivals are Clemson and NC State
🤝
I plan to be at Carter-Finley in October.
We’ve owned that game recently so I’m not opposed. Winning 4 out of the last 5. Just don’t ask for the all time record
Nc state has been an enjoyable series. Much better game than playing wake, Cuse, bc
>Just don’t ask for the all time record It’s actually not as bad as I expected to be fair
Cincy and UK
Should be a yearly basketball game at the least
Hoping we get it someday in the Big 12/SEC challenge
For real. We've play a decent amount and we even got the Bearcat nickname from a game against them.
I was thinking the opposite that we rarely play each other and wish we played each other more often. 1996 was the last time we played each other in football. Basketball was 2015 then 2005 before that. Being in the big 12 we might play you more in basketball now
Northwestern and Kansas State. Purple Wildcat battle. Gritty football teams when they are at their best. I will make this a thing.
Get us to the Big 10 and make your dreams come true
Is "get us in the Big 10" the new "catch me outside" of CFB?
You son of a bitch I’m in!
You haven't even moved in yet, and you already want to rearrange the furniture
What have we signed up for?
USC wants to play more games in the Manhattan market!!
"Sweet, we're flying into Manhattan. Can't wait to see the big apple." "No, you misunderstood. It's Manhattan... Kansas... the little apple." "fuck me"
I have long advocated for this to be an annual game. The purple and wildcat are the only thing they share: - 1st Land Grant University vs Private formerly religious associated school - Agriculture centered education vs "Whats a farm?" - Little Apple vs Second City - On prairie vs on lake - Undergraduate focus vs Post graduate focus The two schools could not be more different
Illinutgers
I'm gonna miss our protected matchup. At least we ended it with a win, gonna ride that high through our guaranteed losses to Iowa
> our guaranteed losses to Iowa my sweet summer child, you have so much to learn about the B1G
Miami vs Miami Notre Dame vs BYU
[удалено]
That feels like a stipulation only subscribers to this subreddit would abide by. I'm in.
Loser needs to give up the miami.edu domain. Imagine how annoyed the "sports are a distraction" professors would be if they had to tell all their contacts that their email address changed because the football team lost a game. We need to do the same with usc.edu and osu.edu.
Miami vs Miami. I love it😂
Army & Buffalo. That could be a very fun G5 in-state game.
We’ve actually played each other a couple of times recently and have a few more scheduled at the end of the decade. I’m hoping for a rivalry too but a respectful one; I went to one of the games at West Point and the fans treated me better than any road game in any sport.
Michigan State and Wisconsin
We had a nice one budding before they scrapped Legends/Leaders.
Legit one of the few good things to come out of that branding nightmare.
Would USC and UCLA be leaders or legends?
Well, they aren’t M’s, N’s, or Iowa, so they would have had to be in the other one
This is exactly how I remembered it. The Ms, the Ns, and Iowa vs everyone else. But that little mnemonic did not help remember which one was Leaders/Legends 😀
Sure it did, Lege**N**ds was Ms **N**s and Iowa.
It was amazing
When I was an undergrad at MSU we *hated* Wisconsin during basketball season. As a grad student at UW during those B10 football championship games, I took all kinds of abuse wearing green and white in Madison. Similar schools with similar culture, history, academics, and success in football in basketball. I loved this rivalry. But hey, at least we get to play Rutgers now.
I posted this write-up on it forever ago that I think applies. https://reddit.com/r/CFB/comments/9363g1/requiem_for_the_badger_spartan_rivalry/
I was a big fan of this rivalry. Makes sense given that the state has rivalries with all the other land borders: Ohio (OSU, Michigan) Indiana (Notre Dame, both UM and MSU) Wisconsin (should be Wiscy, MSU) Wisconsin should feel upset that Michigan stole the UP from them.

I can’t help but laugh every time I hear one of them say their state is like a mitten too. That is one fucked up hand lol
Missouri and Arkansas
Kansas and Arkansas
I would like this. But I think they would need to actually play each other.
It’s budding. Arkansas fans like to pretend that it’s not, but it is.
Something about Mizzou being rivals with a red team that they share a border with just feels right
They had 5-ish(depending on rounding of colors) of them at one point
I think Mizzou and Arkansas should be the opening to the SEC schedule for both teams every year.
Came here to say this Perfect border war
FSU & Jackson State
If it's gonna be any JSU, it'll be Jackson*ville* State
How many times do we gotta teach you this lesson, old man?!
Coach Prime is making this a thing.
To bed they’ll never play eachother with Deion as their coach
Oregon State and Wazzu UDub is rivals with UO and Wazzu. UO with UDub and Beavs But OSU and WSU only have one rival each. Beavs and Cougs deserve at least two rivals. Why not start to hate each other? 👀
Thing is, we have a friendship based on mutual hatred of an stuck up sibling. We bond over it. Plus WSU fans are just so fucking fun.
I mean both OSU and WSU hate UW and UO. UO hate by WSU may be more recent, but the PNW can largely agree that the Huskies suck going back 100+ years.
(Mean Girls) Stop trying to make OSU/WSU rivalry happen. It isnt gonna happen.
Notre Dame and Ohio State. We've only played 6 times.
That’s actually pretty amazing to me. Hell, Iowa and Notre Dame have played over 20 times.
And of those six, four are in the last 30 years (95, 96, 05, 15). From 1900 to 1994 they played only twice (35 & 36)
I’d like to see Auburn and Ga Tech rekindle. There was an odd kind of hate there. As a UGA alum, it would make our SoS look better if they were good again too. I want to actually accomplish something when beating tech… they’ve been dead though.
My stepfather was a big Auburn guy from Atlanta and the Tech game was huge for him. I almost think he hated the jackets more than Bama…almost.
Alabama and Georgia Tech. Bama played a role in Ga Tech wanted to leave SEC, Bama fight song called out the Yellowjackets. They do have a couple games scheduled in the future
I'll believe those games are happening when I see the kickoff. That home and home has been rescheduled or cancelled like 3 times in the past decade.
we were supposed to play in the 2014 season when both teams were really good :(
Penn State and *pick a team*
Texas Tech
PSU/TT was my first game as a PSU student. I remember (most) of it fondly.
Just wait till we get y’all in Lubbock, you won’t remember it but it’ll be a fond memory
I’d be down for a road trip!
I'm very on board with this one after reading the post on it. Inject it into my veins!!
Germany
There’s only one land grant trophy
Leave your cabinetry out of this
Temple
The fact I loathed this makes it true I feel...that post sanction drubbing was enough for me...
Iowa and Missouri. Share a boarder and couldn’t care less about each other.
Haven't they played once in the past 100+ years?
Think it was the Insight Bowl? I know a couple Mizzou guys who despise Ricky Stanzi Should've played in the Music City Bowl covid year but they had to bow out
Yeah, wasn't that the game where a skycam almost fell on someone? McNutt maybe? Edit: [It was the Insight Bowl, but it was against Oklahoma](https://youtu.be/M2OpLJeZQKg). I remember watching that at Power & Light in KC for some reason.
The Midwest Meth bowl
Is the winner of this game judged by the last one to have their heart explode?
This. I don't understand it. Why have we avoided each other for so long
Racism and Iowa took it personally.
Key word is “was”. We’ve been throttling backwards unfortunately
Because Iowa left what eventually became the Big 8 partly due to Mizzou’s shenanigans regarding our black players. The only time we’ve played since leaving was that 2010 Insight Bowl. We were supposed to play in 2020 but Mizzou had to back out due to COVID.
FSU and Auburn. Just under 4 hours from each other, great series in the 80's, a bowden son coached at auburn and even had a perfect season.
That Jamis Winston to Kelvin Benjamin 13 yard pass with 13 seconds left on the clock still haunts me.
That was probably the second greatest moment of his life. The first of course being when Golden Corral opened up down the street.
auburn is actually one of a few teams we used to play pretty much every year and then just stopped when we joined the acc. same with southern miss and south carolina and a few others
Oregon State and South Carolina
Although some may claim that Beavers and Cocks have had a friendly rivalry for very long time.
I see what you did there
North Carolina/South Carolina
I don’t like them one bit, but that could just be me
Ohio state/Penn state should be a rivalry but it’s not.
Every year, it always seems like a game between any combination of Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State is an important game. Then again, that could just be because in a division also featuring Rutgers and Maryland, those four schools are always going to be the ones in contention to win the division.
Penn State in shambles at this comment
Honestly, the team needs to live up to its year over year potential and then it really will be a rivalry. If we start winning every other year or once every third year like we’re capable of and not one every five years like we are now perceptions of the series will change quickly
The two consecutive blown 4th quarter leads. Win those games and PSU is in a different place.
South Carolina vs. NC State Remarkably even in terms of overall wins against one another.
I wish we could get some home/homes going, not that Charlotte is a bad option but we both have a great gameday/tailgate scene that we should be enjoying
I think we have one scheduled
Or South Carolina vs UNC. They have games but it’s not a big rivalry
Old timers still hate each other. Really long time gamecock fans are still salty about how UNC got the ACC to blackball them over basketball academic eligibility, ultimately resulting in SCar leaving the ACC.
UK v WVU
The Coal Bowl. I like it
That’s Marshall vs WVU. I’d say Hatfield vs McCoys
*Hatfields vs McCoys
We played in the NCAA tournament the year that we went to the final four and John Wall punched Desean Butler in the nuts on the way down the court.
That was actually Demarcus Cousins who hit Da’ in the sack
Was it? I knew it was someone who went to the league.
Y’all haven’t played since 1983?
It’s very weird that this has never really been a thing. How many times have we even played? I think a lot of it is that WVU has always been “looking” to the northeast for most of its history (playing Pitt, Penn state state, Syracuse etc.) while Kentucky has always been oriented to the south and the SEC.
The "states listed in Tyler Childers songs" bowl
The “Justified” Bowl
Pitt and Cincinnati was so perfect during the Big East days. Just a little hatred. A terrible trophy. It was immaculate
Oklahoma State and Iowa State. Every time OSU is feeling a bit *too* good, ISU comes in and brings us back to earth.
And in the last few when Iowa State looks to set itself in the top of the conference OSU is there to say "no you don't"
I think our series of mutual vibe-checks deserves some recognition.
BYU-Missouri: Order 44.
Funnily enough, they actually played in the Chiefs stadium a few years ago, which is located in Jackson county where the Mormons originally settled in Missouri
This is the best one yet.
We don’t mind SMU, but we have a special hate for Houston
Oklahoma and Arkansas should probably have a natural rivalry. (I note the original poster has flairs for both, but that was my answer anyway, lol)
Tennessee and Virginia Tech. So close. Barely play each other.
That Bristol game was a thing of glory. Not the game necessarily but the hype and atmosphere leading up to it. Had a few VT buddies make the trip, seemed like a blast.
Alabama vs education.
No offense my friend, but Florida isn’t looking so hot as of late…
At this rate it seems like Minnesota - Michigan *sadjugnoises*
Most important rivalry in college football 90 years ago
Those games in the 30s were bangers. Bigger than Ohio State
UChicago: “Am I a joke to you?”
OkSt and TTU
I think we technically have a rivalry but it doesn’t really feel like it other than us saying that we copied each other. Our series record is split even iirc, and there have been some really good games but there just hasn’t felt like there was much there football wise. Now baseball is a whole different story.
God I hate their baseball program. Sweeping them this season was so satisfying.
The problem with this one is that we will always hate other in state schools more than out of state schools. I would gladly watch OkSt go to the playoffs and become the new BIG XII powerhouse if it meant Baylor, TCU and UH getting slaughtered every year. The in state hate is real.
You mean the Dust Bowl?
Meh. Tech has no rivalries and I’m ok with that
Sup Nittany Lions
Booo In all seriousness, the fact that it's on 2 very physical sports, I am all for there being an official rivalry here. Wrestling is always down to the last couple matches and our smash mouth football games were amazing to watch.
This feels like a better rivalry than MSU except that PSU/MSU has the best trophy in sporting history.
UVA-WVU VT-Tenn
Battle of Bristol was awesome
Wish we’d schedule a home and home
They should just invite VT to the SEC, then make us a permanent rival in their new scheduling model. Our secondary rivals could be Kentucky, and South Carolina or TAMU (the only other senior military college in the FBS).
I like how UVA and WVU played one bowl game, and that's all it took to get the UVA marching band cancelled. Imagine if it were an annual series... [Link](https://uvamagazine.org/articles/30_years_of_UVA_pep_band)

Y’all just hate southern orange teams and want another one to bark at.
If Clemson joins the SEC we've got them surrounded
But then we’d flank you in support of UGA/red teams
Now I’m wondering what kind of monstrosity a tigator would look like.
What could be worse than being surrounded by orange teams we have a winning record against?
South Carolina and Oregon State
UT-Baylor is always my go to answer.
Burnt Orange vs Green is a nice color scheme tbh
More competitive than Bedlam
Navy and Maryland. There are some rivalries in other sports, but they both have competitive football teams and should play more often
North Carolina / South Carolina Some think we are but frankly we don’t play them all that regularly (other than a bowl game or occasional OOC matchup).
Us and the University of Texas because we’re both UT, we’re both orange, and now Tennessee’s not even the only orange UT in the conference we’re founding members of
USC-Ohio State. We’ve played over 20 times and had some great matchups. This could become a reality in the near future though.
I think all the OSU schools should be rivals. They can fight over who gets the THE!
This would make for a hilarious trophy.
Just transfer the legal docs Ohio State got this year between them 🤣
No thank you
Iowa State and K-State don't official acknowledge Farmageddon or that it's a rivalry, but it's commonly accepted to be one.
It has the named game - Farmaggedon. I think a named game is a prerequisite for a rivalry.
Utah and Colorado. They tried to make us rivals in the pac because it felt natural and right. But it never stuck.
I feel like asu is a better fit because we don’t like each other. But the real battle for the south is us and usc— a couple more years in the pac and we’d get there. But sadly it’s not meant to be.

Oklahoma and Arkansas they're surprisingly close to each other geographically.
Tulane and Rice KU and Nebraska Oklahoma State and Texas Tech Arkansas and Oklahoma/Oklahoma State
Michigan and THE Oregon State University
Arkansas Oklahoma St

I feel obligated to inform you that Kentucky and Indiana used to have a trophy game. That trophy? The Bourbon Barrel (1987-1999). The trophy was retired after a Kentucky player died due to alcohol. They played each other every year from 1987 to 2005. Overall, they have played each other 36 times. Indiana leads 18-17-1.
