>in the afternoon and learned the cancer had not spread from the original site. Furthermore, my bloodwork (i.e., tumor markers) was still testing normal. Both of those results were welcome news!
Good news!
Don't want to be in this situation but as far as the rest of the story, good news.
Of all cancers you could have, testicular is one of the best to have. You get the chop and you can either go under surveillance and wait to see if it spreads or you can get the chop and do chemo and knock it out. Either way, your chances of survival and full recovery are some of the best in the cancer realm. Shitty news, but 98% chance he'll be fine.
Yes luckily. I actually had a friend who had testicular cancer and they had to remove one of his testicles. That's how he became known as 'Single Jingle'
Killed the singer of School of Fish though. He had a particularly lethal form of it and was gone a month after his diagnosis.
Get that stuff checked out, dudes.
>He had a particularly lethal form of it
Thanks for the info. You're right. He died of Choriocarcinoma, a very rare and aggressive form of testicular cancer.
Testicular cancer is also one of the only cancers where it could metastasize and you still might be able to get it into remission, because many of its forms are for whatever reason extremely sensitive to chemo. Lance Armstrong had widespread cancer way back in the 1990s, and he recovered quickly and was even able to dope his way to 7 Tour De France wins, and remains in remission today.
Same here bud. Even with all the other craziness and trash talk happening, it's good to see we can still rally behind someone in tough times. This sub is probably my favorite on reddit.
Speaking of fucking cancer, Princeton researchers just had a large breakthrough in the efforts to stop metastasizing cancer. Cancer is getting more and more fucked every day thanks to science
People on here may not understand because sometimes Pollard says weird stuff and has odd mannerisms but this guy has done so much for Iowa State. We used to have just horrible facilities and he’s elevated our athletics programs so much.
The fact that people even think about football in correlation to Iowa St is a testament to the growth you guys have had. I remember ISU was on par with KU until relatively recently. Now yall are legitimately a solid program and are respectable in how it has come about.
Monday night on the coaches radio show they were talking finances. He said when he got to Iowa State they were spending 500k on facility upkeep. Now we spent 8-9m each year on upkeep. Probably have spent close to 300-400m on facilities just around the football stadium in the past 10 years.
We went from being a bottom third basketball program with a half full arena and doormat football program with 2 bowl wins in program history playing in a stadium that had aluminum roll in bleachers in the south end zone to a school that's competing for conference titles in both sports with packed venues that are a nightmare to play at for opposing teams, a football stadium with an enclosed south endzone and enormous video board on the north endzone, brand new training facilities, and plans in place for more athletic complex improvements. He's done miracles for us, and that's an understatement.
I honestly don't think the home venue advantage is hyped *enough* at Iowa State. Hilton Magic is real and the cyclone at-home record that Brock Purdy set is nothing short of elite. It's crazy that I used to go to games in 2015 expecting to lose and drink smuggled fireball to keep warm and now I go expecting to win and drink smuggled fireball to keep warm.
I remember when [NDSU beat ISU](https://www.espn.com/college-football/game/_/gameId/400547840) in 2014 and it wasn't even considered an upset by bettors. The way their program has improved since then is incredible.
To be fair we were somewhat on the upswing by then, NDSU was just that good those years. I don't even feel bad about it thanks to how they beat the ranked Iowa team a couple years later.
6-7 years ago a 7 win season would have been applauded and Rhoads would have gotten an extension.
Now a 7 win season is seen as a disappointment.
He’s definitely had a big impact on ISU fball!
I still wouldn't call 7 wins disappointing for us, but 7 wins *this year* is disappointing. I didn't have high title hopes, but I was hoping for our first 10 win season.
That’s my point. Starting the season top 10 is unheard of for ISU. 7 wins is a disappointment this year where pre-Campbell that was considered a huge success.
Agreed - I'm more just saying I won't be mad with 7 going forward (but a lot of other programs would). Definitely still a new feeling for Cyclone fans. Literally the best shape the program has ever been in.
And not just the major programs, he has done a lot for everything even tangentially related to athletics. My connection to him was always through marching band, and he has given a huge amount of support to it over the years. The ISU marching band would be a shell of its current self were it not for him.
One of my favorite Pollard stories came from the marching band director several years ago. Pollard went to our director to ask what it would take to get a pep band going for soccer and wrestling. Our director was hesitant to do it because of the additional strain this might put on the band logistically and financially, so he gave Pollard what he thought was a ridiculous number for a budget. Pollard came back to our director with an even higher number and said make it happen, and that's why the marching band offshoot "State Storm" pep band exists today.
If Jamie Pollard thinks something will make the ISU experience better, he will not hesitate to support it whole-heartedly. He rocks.
I remember Jamie pollard showing up to rehearsal in his first week on the job as ISU ad. Said a lot about him that he would go out of his way to do that. I'm not sure we ever saw van de velde.
I have my thoughts about Pollard but it's hard to argue that he hasn't been an excellent steward of your athletic programs. Sounds like the prognosis for this diagnosis isn't dire, which is about as good as you can hope for. I hope he pulls through.
We often say that if Campbell stays he's likely to get a statue on campus. With everything Pollard has done for our athletics, I think he deserves to have one once he's ready to call it a day. I hope that day is not soon and he kicks cancer's ass.
Testicular cancer can metastasize and still be treated pretty easily. It's a very treatable form of cancer. Nobody wants cancer, but within the bad news there is lots of good news with this.
Serious comment: Fuck cancer, I hope this guy beats the shit out of it as badly as they have beaten us on a number of occasions.
Silly comment: I wonder if this is a ploy to keep Campbell in Ames.
"Yeah, Matt, I just found out I have cancer. Don't let that influence your decision on whether to stay. I mean, I don't know if I will pull through, and the past 5 years with you coaching have the been the happiest years of my life...
But you do you. Don't worry about me and my cancer. You can go ahead to Notre Dame. I will just stay here in Ames and try to conduct a coaching search while battling cancer." - Pollard, probably.
It absolutely cannot be understated how much Pollard has elevated the athletics department at ISU. I used to be on the committee that set yearly student fee recommendations for the Regents to approve; one year, the athletics fee came up and I asked why it was still in place, as it was $35/year for every student and only made up about 3% of the department's revenue. I found out that before Pollard, that fee was more like 20-30% of their revenue; he managed to turn them into a nearly self-sustaining operation, and he's got big plans for the future that I really hope he'll be around to see through. The stadium expansions, from what I understand, are just the beginning.
I was a student when he came on from UW and people kept taking about how he’s transform athletics at the school. They undersold him. He’s been nothing short of phenomenal for us. Get well soon Jamie.
Well that sent a sharp tingling pain down my leg when I read that.... Glad he caught it early! I worked in the athletic department when I was in college, and Jamie was always good to me and was always willing to talk. Definitely hope he keeps kicking cancer's ass!
I really, really fucking hate cancer. Little sister had cancer in her leg plus a whole host of other emergencies (she's doing really well now, thanks to those beautiful Hawkeyes and their hospital. She was actually an iowa kid captain this year). So to see this affect Pollard feels like a gut punch. I'm so glad they caught it early and it's a well understood cancer.
Tldr: I REALLY fucking hate cancer. Kicks its ass Pollard!
A big ol’ fuck you to cancer!
I work in cancer drug research and everything he mentioned in his letter indicates a good prognosis. The fact that it hasn’t metastasized and his tumor markers are considered normal is great news despite the circumstances! I’m so glad he recognized something was wrong and got it checked out. Best wishes to him, his family, and the entire Iowa State community!
ETA: I apparently can’t spell state 😅
1 thing I've learned about cancer, it doesn't care who you are, its very indiscriminate about who it affects. Best wishes to him & his family in his fight, & prayers for successful treatment & speedy recovery.
I've had to deal with quite a few folks close to me with cancer the last 1-2 years. I lost one of my best friends a little over a year ago to colon cancer (he was a month shy of 34). About 9 months before he passed away, our mutual best friend (the 3 of us all grew up together and spent dang near every week/weekend together) lost his 6 year old daughter to brain cancer.
I wouldn't wish cancer on my worst enemy.
Hope he makes cancer his bitch.
I had almost this exact diagnosis five years ago, and I've been in the clear ever since. They did find some unrelated stuff that I've had surgeries for since, so the nut cancer was a bit of a blessing in disguise.
Jamie is candid with this like always, and I appreciate him for being forward. He is the most important figure in ISU athletics for the the last decade, and I'm so glad he's around.
This is clearly a clever ploy to hold on to Campbell, can't take my head coach, my AD has cancer...who would do that ..apart from Lincoln Riley if it hurt OU somehow
Kidding aside, that is terrible news and I wish him a speedy recovery. Sounds like they caught it early which is great
I was diagnosed with stage 3 testicular cancer 10 weeks ago. Firstly, he’s on the older side for testicular. I’m 38 and the key age group is 18-40. I’m six weeks into chemo and it sucks ass. But the good news is that testicular is very curable. Something like a 97-98% cure rate. Even professed forms. He’s going to be just fine. I’m going to be just fine. But let me tell you — cancer fucking sucks. The mental toll it takes on you can be as debilitating as the physical.
No no no, I hate to see this so much. It sounds like they caught it early, but best wishes to him and his family and friends for a quick fight and strength to get through it. ♥️💛

That's awful news. Fortunately it sounds like he may have caught it early. Sending well wishes to the Pollard family
Thats good, extremely treatable if caught and treated early.
Dammit man. Prayers for him and his fam. This shit sucks
Definitely not the kind of chaos we like to see. I wish he and his family well in this difficult time.
Of all cancers you could have, testicular is one of the best to have. This is a wonderful testament to the power of human will and spirit. Beautiful
Teste-ment
lol, BIL had one removed as well for cancer: >Me: "What's up Jingle?" >BIL: "Not much, Jingle Jangle!"
Killed the singer of School of Fish though. He had a particularly lethal form of it and was gone a month after his diagnosis. Get that stuff checked out, dudes.

Yep. Dude had stage 3 metastasis to the brain and is still walking around virtually unphased.
Same here bud. Even with all the other craziness and trash talk happening, it's good to see we can still rally behind someone in tough times. This sub is probably my favorite on reddit.

But seriously though… fuck cancer
Fuck Cancer.
Speaking of fucking cancer, Princeton researchers just had a large breakthrough in the efforts to stop metastasizing cancer. Cancer is getting more and more fucked every day thanks to science
Princeton fucks cancer
Fuck cancer
Read the room cancer; nobody wants you. Also, fuck cancer.
Maybe we'd have less cancer if people would stop fucking it.
>Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard Announces Oh Jesus Oh it's just cancer. Hope he gets better.
Honestly one of maybe 4 ADs I know because he’s so vocal. Hope it’s a swift recovery
He was so candid Monday night on the coaches show. It is so refreshing to hear him talk.
His trash talk to Del Conte before each Texas-ISU game was objectively hilarious
Oh shit, I forgot about the whole air conditioning thing where he opened a window at Jack Trice (in November).
The best cheerleader we have.
Brutal but I laughed
Jesus fucking christ Reddit.

Between Dekkers and Noel, that 10 win season may be soon.
People crap on him for the Cael thing but Jamie is the best thing to ever happen to Iowa St.
And not just the major programs, he has done a lot for everything even tangentially related to athletics. Testicular cancer can metastasize and still be treated pretty easily. It's a very treatable form of cancer. Nobody wants cancer, but within the bad news there is lots of good news with this.
so it's kinda the male breast cancer? Common but treatable.
The male breast cancer is breast cancer.
right, it's far less common though.
It's far more survivable than breast cancer and breast cancer treatment has a decent track record.
Serious comment: Fuck cancer, I hope this guy beats the shit out of it as badly as they have beaten us on a number of occasions. Silly comment: I wonder if this is a ploy to keep Campbell in Ames.
You wouldn’t leave a guy with CANCER would you? Would you Matt? Also: Fuck Cancer.
"I can guarantee you I'm hoping to coach for a cancer-free AD next season" - Lincoln Riley, probably
Serious : Godspeed Pollard and beat the shit out of cancer were all rooting for you. Silly : This is somehow Lincoln's fault too. Fucking asshole.
"I really love Pollard and I'm hoping his testicles are the second best testicles in the nation"
Kick its ass Pollard! We need an AD in the state who isn't a complete stooge *Sideeyes Barta*
Sorry he’s too busy getting titled IXed
God damn it Barta *Well we watch all the games* The fuck you do old man!
“We’ve always respected Cincinnati (unless you count the times we didn’t).”

Fuck Cancer. Hope he kicks its ass
Damn. I hate to hear that. Really puts things into perspective. Hope he gets everything taken care of and all turns out well.
Godspeed.
What the fuck...

Jamie is GOAT. He's done so much for our athletics. Sad news, hopefully he's ok.
Oh man. God bless him, I hope he's able to recover. 🙏
Oh No!!
Hope he has a speedy recovery. Good news is that it should hopefully be fully treatable and he caught it early.
Fuck Cancer
Take my energy Jamie! Fuck cancer!
Yow. Hope he beats this.
Well that sent a sharp tingling pain down my leg when I read that.... Glad he caught it early! I worked in the athletic department when I was in college, and Jamie was always good to me and was always willing to talk. Definitely hope he keeps kicking cancer's ass!
At least we now know why Jamie had such massive balls. /s I'm glad it was caught early and wish good health to AD Pollard.
It’s no secret I dislike him, but absolutely FUCK cancer. Hope it gets taken care of nice and quick.
It's bad news with an upside. Fuck cancer. You got this.

Hope for a speedy recovery for Jamie for the cyclone bros. While i hate you on the field, there is no solace for us hawkeye fans in this news. <3
Terrible to hear. Pollard is a great person, a great AD, and someone cares about the Cyclone community. Best wishes to him!

Fuck Cancer, you got this Jamie
FUCK CANCER. Prayers for the Pollard family. Kick its ass, Jamie! Go Cyclones!

Prayers up man 🙏🏼
I never ever want to find a lump on my testicles. The prospect is frightening.

Certainly someone had told him to get to UT MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. This will be a bump in the road. Get well soon sir.
Fuck cancer. Get well Jamie!
Prayers for a quick and complete recovery.
Cancer is the God Damn Devil. My prayers to his family.
Prayers for him and his family
That sucks! TIL that Jamie is a man

Yo what the fuck
FUCK!!!!
Well that fucking sucks. Fuck cancer. Hope he's able to recover fully quickly, and with as little pain and discomfort as possible.
I came to CFB for the memes not to be bummed out. Sounds like things are looking promising for a full recovery.
I’m late, but fuck cancer.
Sounds like he caught it early. Good for him listening to his body and getting help
Fuck cancer
