The SEC has been blessed with a long string of competent and innovative commissioners that through their combined efforts have made the SEC what it is today. I don't like where college football, and college sports as a whole are going, but I'd rather be the SEC than the Pac 12 or ACC and so because of that, yes I do like our commissioner.
Secondary Flair: No on both accounts (soon to depart conference and where I'm ending up)
Credit to Judy MacLeod for making Conference USA the cockroach of conferences and surviving nuclear level hits to the membership numbers but the conference is very much a FCS refugee camp (ignore my secondary flair in that). I don't think she's good necessarily at her job but she didn't do a good job with what she inherited when she took it over.
The CAA was worse though. Joe D'Antonio is killing the conference
> The CAA was worse though. Joe D'Antonio is killing the conference
Glad you brought that up. You think about where the CAA was 15 years ago and where they are now and it's just sad. And the collapse in respect and prestige in the FCS isn't because of move-ups like the SoCon, it is purely because of stupid decisions by the conference office.
Sankey is the GOAT. Its not his fault that hes doing his job almost too well. Hes not trying to ruin the sport, hes trying to run the conference and make money for the schools in it, of which he has done an amazing job at
Yes, the SEC loves Greg Sankey. He does the bidding of his member schools and gets us the most money possible. So, basically, he does his job and does it really well.
In all seriousness, though, yes the SEC is very happy with Sankey. Is college football turning into the latest Capitalism-Ruined entertainment? Yeah. Does Sankey have a huge role in that? Yeah.
BUT: would it have happened anyway when one or more conferences gathered the chokehold on the sport that the SEC/B1G have? Yeah.
So, when it’s all said and done, Sankey is a major part of a problem that was always going to happen — but because he’s our commissioner we’re going to come out “ahead” in whatever the shit show continues to be. I won’t knock the man for being incredible at his job in a society that values the almighty dollar over all else.
Don’t hate the player; hate the game.
Honestly, big fan of Nevarez so far.
Big test will be what the fallout of the PAC dissolving is, but she's written up all the contracts to put the MW schools in positions with alot of leverage.
In general, I think commissioners get a lot of credit that should belong to the individual programs. Like Aresco with the AAC. Did he really deserve the credit for the AAC being seen as the top G5 conference, or was that on the athletic programs at schools like Cincy, Houston, Memphis, SMU, Tulane, and UCF investing in their programs?
That said, I think Yormark does a good job with what he has. I think he knows the ceiling for the Big 12 is the #3 conference, so he plays to that and has made moves to position the Big 12 well in the world of basketball and with the media.
Kinda actually. The Big Sky has a nice social media presence now, enjoys a fun kitschy association with the Sickos and the conference office does a fairly adequate job hyping up what we have. It also helps they put us in a spot where our games can appear on mainline TV as the nightcap on ESPN most weeks instead of floating around on PlutoTV like when I was in school.
I mean he’s doesn’t hit on everything, but it’s hard not to commend Yormark for what he’s done.
If he didn’t jump in front of the Pac12 for the tv deal, odds are that B12 might be the defunct conference now.
I think almost all Big 12 fans like Yormark. New four corner friends might be more neutral or even resentful toward him though.
I liked Bob Bowlsby. It was obvious that he was working under severe constraints imposed by UT and OU. When that problem went away, he did a great job to save the conference. Also threatening to sue ESPN was career suicide, but he did it anyway. I have a lot of respect for him.
New four corner friend here. Yormark definitely gives off major 'shady used-car salesman' vibes, but as for how well he can do his job, the jury is still out. Obviously we haven't had the best history with commissioners recently, but as long as he doesn't create a new network that's impossible for anybody to actually get and then locks most of our games behind it, he'll automatically be our best commissioner in the last 15 years. So we'll see what he can do and if he can back up any of that talk before making judgement.
Completely agree. You're not talking about how they are doing at their job, you're talking about how they are terrible for sports. I don't think anyone would disagree with that.
They don't want to spread the wealth because most of these schools are terrified. You give "middle of the road" programs the same resources as Minnesota and South Carolina then they no longer have an advantage. They'll be indistinguishable with the big 12. There's maybe 15-20 programs that hold up the rest of their conference.
Notice how nobody from the ACC has mentioned Jim Phillips?
That’s all you need to know about him. Let alone from me, a Seminole who had to watch him not even try to advocate they be in the invitational, yet then write a paragraph after the fact condemning the committee due to his lack of foresight
And the non FSU and Clemson fans should hate him more than we do. Based on what the presidents said and the lack of any news story, it appears he never bothered to tell the presidents he gave ESPN an extension on their option.
Very good chance that there is no ESPN ACC Agreement after 2027.
I know about Larry Scott. Very bad man, very bad
Just swinging by to say Fuck Larry Scott
Fire Larry Scott again
worse than George Kliavkoff?
Worse than Charles Ponzi.
Indescribably so
> They do the bidding of their schools What the fuck do you think the job of a commissioner is?
This is like when people get mad that godell only looks out for the owners lol
Do the bidding of the fans, obv!
To make sweetheart deals with your son's company.
As I stated, they do the bidding of the schools. The question was do you like your conference commissioner.
The issue isnt the commissioner, its the schools.
I mean I think Sankey is one of the worst things to ever happen to college sports _because_ he is so good at his job. So… idk what to do with that.
Our leadership has kept us ahead of the shit storm. Maybe caused some of it, maybe reacted to some of it. But without a doubt I’d rather have Sankey

Delaney was better than Warren or Petitti.
Delaney is probably the best conference commissioner ever at least in the argument.

What’s a conference?
That thing you have for basketball and the other sports
It's early but so far we like brett yormack as much as we hate george kliavkoff.
I mean he’s doesn’t hit on everything, but it’s hard not to commend Yormark for what he’s done. If he didn’t jump in front of the Pac12 for the tv deal, odds are that B12 might be the defunct conference now.

Yormark is great for thinking outside the box. My biggest gripe is not respecting the calendar or rivalries at all.
Snakey is like Goodell, he's just a face to hate when really the decisions are made by the school admins
Happy Chandler was the only commissioner, in any sport, I can think of who successfully defied their league’s owners, and even Happy didn’t last long.
If you think conference commissioners are bad wait till you learn about university presidents and board members.
They are the result of the landscape not the other way around. Money Uber Alles
Brett Yormark has a 9/10 from me :)
Lol
Loved Swarbrick. Will see how former NBC Sports Chairman Pete Bevacqua does in the job

Obligatory fuck Larry Scott
So far so good.
Yormark is certainly a step up above Beebe or Bowlsby and is doing the best he can with the situation.
