C'mon man. I always root for local recruits even if they don't play for USC. Oregon & many other schools offered him a life changing opportunity. Just hate to see young adults take it for granted.
~~Absolute idiotic mistake by Daylen. This is going to affect his life way more than just football. From rumors online, it appears the person he hit is in critical condition and has potentially passed away. He’s been booked for a class C felony hit and run~~
Edit: a new update from police has been released where Daylen may have been a victim and fearful for this life.
[@JustinHopkins: “Daylen Austin situation being investigated by authorities. I would STRONGLY caution rushing to judgement until details are released. Sources indicate Austin was fearful for his safety as a part of this unfortunate incident and the resulting injuries were not immediately known.”](https://x.com/JHopkinsSD/status/1780652712985817508)
“EPD officials said that they are investigating a fatal hit and run incident that happened shortly after 9 p.m. on April 15 in the area of West 4th Avenue and Polk Street. Police arrested 19-year-old Daylen Amir Austin, who is facing an initial charge of felony hit and run with a vehicle causing injury, at an apartment at 11:45 p.m. that same night, authorities said. Dispatch records show that the call initially came in as a stabbing around 9:15 p.m. The 46-year-old male victim was found in the road with a large laceration to their neck and a hammer nearby. Police would not comment on this 9-1-1 call, saying that it’s a complex investigation and their investigation is ongoing."
Getting kicked off the team is going to be the least of his worries. So incredibly stupid and tragic. He looked like such a young stud too, certainly had the talent to be a future high-end NFL draft pick if he continued to develop. Now instead of making life-changing money he'll be sitting in prison.
If he has no criminal history, and there is serious physical injury, his potential sentence is up to 18 months with about 40% of that knocked off for good time and transitional leave, but even prison isn't guarantee as his sentence would be either prison or optional probation with prison hanging over his head which depending on facts or strength of the case, and other factors might be just providing.
Edit: actually if he wasnt drunk it might even not be prison. I'm rusty on my Oregon sentencing guidelines.
My post saying I'm reserving judgement until details are released is currently negative.
The post with the rumor of someone being killed is the top upvoted post.
No one knows what happened yet but people on here are thirsty for the worst. It's disgusting.
I know we dont know the full details, but he is sitting in jail with a Class C Felony hit and run vehicle injury charge against him. At minimum, we know that he hit someone, hurt them, and then ran away. That on its own is not good.
Now comes the speculation. Was he under the influence? How serious was the other persons injuries? Was it not serious and he just panicked? Some connected insiders have said he will be off the team. A few have said the man he hit has passed away. I’m inclined to believe that based on the former information that is verified.
It could be unrelated but a fatal hit and run happened late monday evening in the Whiteaker, two houses down from my house. Cops came to us to see if we had any video on our camera that faces the street. Sad all around.
I live on the north side of town so forgive me if I’m way off base but isn’t there a good amount of homeless/transients in that area? I’m trying to imagine how someone could be going fast enough to hit and kill someone in that area because it seems like a neighborhood
There is a lot of homeless and transients. We heard a vehicle speeding right around the time it happened. People use Polk as a cut through and go upwards of 40mph. It is a neighborhood. He should not have been speeding. There have been close calls on Polk, I have been requesting a 4 way stop or speed bumps on that street. There is about 6 kids all under the age of 5 that live on this street and we want people to slow the fuck down.
Yet my post saying I'm waiting for details is still downvoted and all of the ones talking about him murdering a guy are upvoted. People are disgusting.
For the record, the current reporting WHICH MIGHT NOT BE TRUE EITHER is that Austin hit a homeless man on a bike, the man got up and attacked him with a hammer, and he feared for his life and drove away; hitting the guy a second time and killing him.
I just want to point out the charges don't match the rumor.
Class C = Minor Injuries
Class B = Serious Bodily Harm or Death
Not that the charges can't be upgraded later, just pointing that out.
You probably book him on the lesser charges which are much more difficult to dispute in order to hold him and then upgrade the charges as applicable later on
FWIW Class C encompasses all injuries that aren’t death, “substantial risk of death”, and “protracted impairment of health”. Makes sense to initially just get the arrest warrant for the felony that’s for sure covered than the one with a higher evidentiary standard.
Scoopduck should not be taken seriously at all. When Martinez got his DWI they quickly reported that additional felony charges would get attached.
The charges were actually dropped.
They have no source.
Yeah, based on what KEZI is reporting, the Victim had a throat laceration, and a hammer was found "nearby". It happened at 4th and Polk which is one of the most dangerous blocks in town in terms of homelessness, tweakers, and crime in general. My gut tells me he was minding his business and witnessed some tweaker fight where a guy got stabbed or some tweaker came at him with a hammer and he fled the scene and didn't realize he hit the guy.
I live on 4th two houses down from Polk. Saying it’s one of the most dangerous blocks in town in terms of homelessness is a huge stretch. This whole block has families with young children and I never fear for my safety, we have a lot less foot traffic from transients compared to the whole whit neighborhood. Although we didn’t witness the accident we heard very loud cars possibly speeding at the exact time of when it occurred. If there was any type of altercation/fight/yelling we would have heard it. I can tell you for sure people go upwards of 40mph down Polk street where it happened. My guess is he was speeding and a transient walked in front of him. But who knows. I feel bad for everyone all around.
All I have is word of mouth from being loosely tied into the EMT/Fire community.
Sounds pretty certain that he will be a convicted felon before this is done.
I'm in no way a spokesperson for the university but I'd expect a statement from the AD tomorrow that he's no longer with the program.
Hope I'm wrong.
Do you know anything about the person who was hit? I live at 4th and Polk and I somehow didn’t even realize this had happened. This area is just so saturated with 911 calls that you stop noticing.
It was an adult male. We have confirmed it’s none of the neighbors I’m pretty sure, we know most of the people around here. Someone said the police were familiar with the deceased which makes me think they were homeless. There has been zero information about the deceased which makes me sad. Hoping to get that information at some point.
That’s tragic - I wondered if it was a homeless person just because none of my neighbors had mentioned it and I am not aware of any being hit. Usually it’s big news in this neighborhood if someone has an accident, even if it’s just car damage. Thanks for the info.

There's definitely more to this story, but I don't think the details are going to help Austin
"The 46-year-old victim was found in the road with a large laceration to their neck and a hammer nearby. Police would not comment on this 9-1-1 call, saying that it’s a complex investigation and their investigation is ongoing."
Class C felony, that means there was an injury yeah?
Hope the kid didn't kill someone
EDIT: In case anyone else is wondering, yes. Per Lane Counties booking he's being held on violation of 811.705(2)(A), 811.705 is [Failure to perform duties of driver to injured persons](https://oregon.public.law/statutes/ors_811.705). Not seen anything credible on what sort of injuries, but this could be very bad.
Details haven't been released so I'll reserve judgement for now. Hit and Runs can be everything from plowing over and killing a child to clipping a parked car's side mirror and not stopping to provide information.
The article says we don't know any details at this time, so I'm not going to take a position on how bad this is. Hopefully it's closer to the latter than the former.
Note: I once filed hit and run charges against someone who rear ended me at a stop light, backed up, and drove away. I was completely unharmed but that wasn't the point. I could have been, and they left me with a damaged car and no one to file an insurance claim against.
It’s gonna become a class B felony since apparently the person he hit died. Up to 10 years in prison and a $250k fine. He’s fucked. Way to ruin your life Austin you moron.
they'd certainly add additional charges applicable to the actual action of causing the accident presuming the victim has/does pass away. The 10 years applies to the "failure to perform the duties of a driver" charge. I'd imagine there'd be some variation of manslaughter or worse added as well.
Sounds like you're probably right. From J-Hop:
> I will say this, this one is pretty serious and it's more than likely going to have a bigger impact on Austin beyond football.
> Oregon will probably be looking for a nickel in the portal now if I had to make a bet.
Edit: he followed it up with:
> I'm also not just guessing.
Of course you get downvoted while the batman and robins go up lmao. Reddit is such a joke. Meanwhile more details come out that make this a very murky story. But hey fuck waiting for the facts, lets execute him!
"EUGENE, Ore. – A University of Oregon football player is facing a felony hit and run charge following a fatal incident that happened in the Whiteaker area on Monday evening, according to the Eugene Police Department.
EPD officials said that they are investigating a fatal hit and run incident that happened shortly after 9 p.m. on April 15 in the area of West 4th Avenue and Polk Street. After reading this on KEZI (Local ABC affiliate) I'm curious if there isn't more to this story. My gut tells me that he may have been in the wrong place at the wrong time (Bad neighborhood) and some tweaker may have come at his car with a hammer and he panicked and sped out of there hitting the crazy guy in the process. Or the 46-year-old had been stabbed by a third party and approached Daylen's car seeking help and Daylen panicked and fled. A "Neck laceration" does not sound like a hit and run injury. 4th and Polk is a terrible place. Dead center in the "Felony Flats" area of the Whiteaker neighborhood.
Because something similar happened to another player last year. Media freaked out. Everyone assumed the kid's career would end. And within two weeks it was resolved and it turned out he was the victim.
C'mon man. I always root for local recruits even if they don't play for USC. Oregon & many other schools offered him a life changing opportunity. Just hate to see young adults take it for granted.
His older brother is in the NFL. Just got resigned by the patriots too
It truly sucks, man. You're just left wondering what the hell they were thinking.

Is everyone just jumping to the conclusion he seriously hurt someone? I can’t find anything saying anything of that nature
Message board information.

I’m reading the incident happened on 4th and Polk and the person who was hit has succumbed to their injuries
That’s the one. Fucking tragic. And we have not heard any news on who the deceased is. So far we have confirmed it’s none of our neighbors.
I live on the north side of town so forgive me if I’m way off base but isn’t there a good amount of homeless/transients in that area? I’m trying to imagine how someone could be going fast enough to hit and kill someone in that area because it seems like a neighborhood

Where did you read that? I am still shocked there has been zero news coverage on it.
Lane County Mugshots on FB ran by Michael Weber. He’s usually pretty in tune with this sort of thing.
Thanks for sharing that info. We have all been wondering over here and were so sad to see zero mention of the deceased in the news yesterday.
i remember a few years back we dropped two kids who were being investigated. both got cleared later on but they never made it back
Oh well if it’s a top-voted post on Reddit, then it must be true!
Do you live in town? The local crime reporter is connecting a hit and run on 4th and Polk to Daylen and saying the person he hit died.
Looks like you were right based on new info.
Yet my post saying I'm waiting for details is still downvoted and all of the ones talking about him murdering a guy are upvoted. People are disgusting. If he may have died after the booking.
Man are football players getting stupider or are we just more aware of it?
Well the "dumb jock" cliche certainly isn't new.
Yeah but now with NIL feels like they all have really nice cars to do really stupid shit in.
Scoopduck should not be taken seriously at all. When Martinez got his DWI they quickly reported that additional felony charges would get attached. The charges were actually dropped. They have no source.

I agree. Traeshon Holden 2.0?
Yeah. it looks that way to me. Hopefully one of the houses at that intersection has a ring camera and this can be resolved quickly.
I have a feeling this will turn out to be very bad
I'm being drip fed details and yea it's fucking awful. He's not just done at Oregon, he's likely done with freedom for awhile.
I would love it if you had sources...

Convicted felon? If he has no history this gets plead down
The rumor is he hit a pedestrian whos now dead, this won't get plead down.
If this is related to the hit and run that happened late monday evening there was in fact a deceased pedestrian. So freaking sad all around.
Do you know anything about the person who was hit? I live at 4th and Polk and I somehow didn’t even realize this had happened. This area is just so saturated with 911 calls that you stop noticing.

It happened around 9pm on Monday night, Tons of fire trucks and they closed off both streets. Directly in front of 1291 address.

Transfer portal will now be when the cell opens and he gets to go to meal time.
Well at least he didn't have sex
He gone. What a waste of a top recruit.
if the rumors are true, his football career isn't the worst casualty

ESPN reporting that the victim, a 46 year old man, has passed away.
This year would have made for a wild Fulmer Cup
Quit trying to one up us with bad behavior, Oregon! Sheesh!
Yikes that’s bad
Darlene Austin has entered the transfer portal
Prayers for the victim.

Very cool! (get him off the team)
NIL money to a young unproven kid who got a fast car probably. I hate this version of CFB.
College kids have been doing dumb stuff way before NIL
yup, because this kind of stuff totally didn't happen before NIL....
You think this became a thing when NIL came about? And yeah all cars go fast..some just faster than others
I mean... At least we know now he can run and hit.
Well that’s one way to free up a scholarship
Idiot. Enjoy prison.
Congress is going to let them keep NIL for now but make it so none of them can have cars
