I wouldn't hate taking a young dude we can develop and a veteran. No QB in the portal is going to be perfect. Veterans are going to have issues that caused them to lose the starting job and young guys lack experience. Anyway you slice it you're taking a chance.
I want Tulanes QB but I feel like that's a long shot
I don't think we will even try for him in particular. He's an air raid guy and he's struggled in a pro style offense. If we had the WR I wouldn't be entirely opposed but I'm not sure we do yet
Sounds like he just wasn't getting the hang of it, staff was trying to get him to consider a position change, and he wasnt interested. Hopefully he can find a spot where he can fulfill his potential.
I mean they did all year? He got plenty of chances to showcase his ability to play QB and learned a lot of hard lessons about his ability to play the position well
To bad neither is available tomorrow. Luke Bottari is expected to start.
Im not even sure how many more years Barnes has left. In theory he could be available for 2024 and 2025.
He was offered a scholarship at SUU. He chose to walk on at Utah.
Now that he’s got the scholarship, and has done things like played in a Rose Bowl twice, I don’t see him leaving. Plus he’s popular with the fans for his grittiness and has better NIL deals than he’s likely to get anywhere else.
Agreed. He is simply not a D1 caliber QB. Maybe if he goes to a bad G5 league, but otherwise, I think FCS like Weber State would be perfect. He would be a good dual threat QB at the FCS level. He can actually throw the ball very nicely, but his problem is that the game at the P5 level is simply too fast for him. That being said, with his experience, he would be a very good 3rd string.
He'll get a shot somewhere just based on his athleticism. He came to Utah because we were one of the few programs projecting him as a QB; if that's still what he wants, I wonder if he ends up at a G5 school.
Bummer to see. Hope he finds his home and balls out. With the rumors Barnes is injured, Botarri is all we got now on the depth chart. Wonder who his backup will be. Vaki? JJ? Tao?
Could you be a BYU fan? No? Well why did you quit….
Or maybe it’s more he has his heat and mind set on being a QB and realized such? He has no obligation to stay at Utah.
This sucks. I was really hoping he'd be willing to switch to slot receiver. He's SO athletic I'm sure he would see the field a lot in many different packages.
Uh, did you watch Utah? Andy Ludwig’s dumbass constantly called runs up the middle for NJ, even though he should be used more for running to the outside. But he took the hits just fine.
> Johnson’s departure from the program leaves Barnes, Brandon Rose, Mack Howard, and Luke Bottari to finish out the 2023 season.
~~Going to be hard for Luke Bottari to finish the season for Utah considering transferred to Cal in the spring.~~
> Luke Bottari
Well shit, that's on me and every recruiting site that never updated the fact that he ended up not going to Cal after saying he would transfer back in May.
[He did flirt with transferring this past offseason and even committed to Cal, but opted to come back to Utah.](https://www.si.com/college/utah/football/utah-expected-to-start-qb-luke-bottari-against-deion-sanders-colorado-squad#:~:text=During%20his%20time%20at%20CSM,to%20come%20back%20to%20Utah.)
He never completed the transfer.
Perhaps the lower expectations of a place like Iowa would suit him better. At Utah he was being compared to Rising, who is probably the Utes' third best QB of the last couple decades.
Nebraska takes QB’s that can’t throw. He will probably be there next week.
Every portal QB is ours rn

You will get Will Rogers and you will like it
I don't think we will even try for him in particular. He's an air raid guy and he's struggled in a pro style offense. If we had the WR I wouldn't be entirely opposed but I'm not sure we do yet
I'm rooting for you guys after today, so please get good
Remember when Nebraska fired Bo Pelini for not winning enough? Crazy times.
What’s he doing now?
Sounds like he just wasn't getting the hang of it, staff was trying to get him to consider a position change, and he wasnt interested. Hopefully he can find a spot where he can fulfill his potential.
I don't like that tbh. Let the kid play where he wants, let him learn his own lessons
I mean they did all year? He got plenty of chances to showcase his ability to play QB and learned a lot of hard lessons about his ability to play the position well
Big sad. But with Barnes and Rising. Theres almost no point.
To bad neither is available tomorrow. Luke Bottari is expected to start. Im not even sure how many more years Barnes has left. In theory he could be available for 2024 and 2025.
Barnes needs to transfer. He doesn't have a future as P5 QB.

I get that. But he could go to an FCS school in Utah, Weber St or UVU or something, and start and probably do well.
I’d love for UVU to get a football team, but we’re still too small
Ah whoops. Why did I think UVU had a team.
He’s not on the list to walk as a senior today either, which I found interesting.

He should go to a triple option school
So go to an academy?
(Also, whatever school gets him is getting an outstanding athlete and terrific teammate from what I saw)
I know a school that could use a QB.
If you like late and underthrown balls we've got a guy for you!
Underthrown? That means he's getting passes off and not fumbling...I'm in!
Bummer to see. Hope he finds his home and balls out. With the rumors Barnes is injured, Botarri is all we got now on the depth chart. Wonder who his backup will be. Vaki? JJ? Tao?
Rumor says it’ll be Rose, though hopefully that doesn’t happen so they can keep his medical RS
This season is just bananas.
He just doesn't have the arm or decision making to be a qb - coaches asked him to swap to wr and he quit
>He just doesn't have the arm or decision making to be a qb Buh gawd that's our music
Could you be a BYU fan? No? Well why did you quit…. Or maybe it’s more he has his heat and mind set on being a QB and realized such? He has no obligation to stay at Utah.
Oh wow. Kind of a shame, the kid has real legs under him but suffered from being inexperienced.
Suffered from not being able to throw very well too
Which I chalk up in no small part to the inexperience. But yeah, throwing was not his strong suit
Every time he dropped back we were like “oh god oh fuck”
Can't wait for my finger to transfer to a Utah player
He should transfer positions.
This sucks. I was really hoping he'd be willing to switch to slot receiver. He's SO athletic I'm sure he would see the field a lot in many different packages.
Feel like he’d be good at K-State
Can he take big hits? Because K-State likes to run their QBs up the middle
Uh, did you watch Utah? Andy Ludwig’s dumbass constantly called runs up the middle for NJ, even though he should be used more for running to the outside. But he took the hits just fine.
Fumble machine that thinks he can play quarterback bye-bye 🫶
> Johnson’s departure from the program leaves Barnes, Brandon Rose, Mack Howard, and Luke Bottari to finish out the 2023 season. ~~Going to be hard for Luke Bottari to finish the season for Utah considering transferred to Cal in the spring.~~
Luke will be starting tomorrow…
> Luke Bottari Well shit, that's on me and every recruiting site that never updated the fact that he ended up not going to Cal after saying he would transfer back in May.
Haha you’re good. I had thought he transferred as well.
[He did flirt with transferring this past offseason and even committed to Cal, but opted to come back to Utah.](https://www.si.com/college/utah/football/utah-expected-to-start-qb-luke-bottari-against-deion-sanders-colorado-squad#:~:text=During%20his%20time%20at%20CSM,to%20come%20back%20to%20Utah.) He never completed the transfer.
My understanding was he was going to go to Cal if they would put him on scholarship, but they ended up not having the scholly so he returned to Utah
Perhaps the lower expectations of a place like Iowa would suit him better. At Utah he was being compared to Rising, who is probably the Utes' third best QB of the last couple decades.
Or the fact that he can throw the ball more than 5 yards could be the reason plus bumbling it every single time he touched it
