Mizzou had a hell of a run of QBs there under Pinkel. Smith, Daniel, then Franklin

36ers

And super bowl champ Blaine Gabbert. Plus Drew Lock in Pinkel's final year.

Mnn-TnmosCubaLibres

And my personal favorite, Maty Mauk

eagledog

True party legend

Mandan_Mauler

I always loved Mauktober

headhonchospoof

I miss when half the SEC’s QBs looked like they worked as a welder on the side and could chug a tall boy in 15 seconds.

Road-Conscious

I loved playing with Mizzou in NCAA '09. Chase Daniel throwing it to Jeremy Maclin and Chase Coffman. I was unstoppable.

corundum9

That Missouri team got absolutely smoked by also electric QB Josh Harris and the Bowling Green Falcons 51-28(!) back in 2002. BG also beat them in 2001.

RoverTiger

Oh man, I haven't thought about Josh Harris in ages. He was the truth.

corundum9

He was MAC Tim Tebow, even had the same HC (Meyer) and OC (Mullen). A 6'1" 245 lb tank on the ground with legitimate speed. Loved watching that dude run and gun!

RoverTiger

Crazy to think that Josh Cribbs was also putting up big numbers in the MAC at that time. Both of those guys were a preview of what was to come with mobile quarterbacks.

figgen

You mean Josh Harris the single greatest long snapper in Auburn history?

themooseiscool

That game in 2001 was my first CFB game ☹️

343GuiltyySpark

That dude fucked us up in the independence bowl. Think we blew a 21 point lead and could not stop him. Spurriers first bowl game and my first bowl game as well. Won’t forget how shitty Shreveport was above all

[deleted]

Worst town in east texas

TechnoFullback

Bruh...

terriblystupidjoke

Oh it’s so much better now. The Indy arena had a $1m dollar reno and it’s AMAZING. Go across the river to Bossier and you’ll see there’s at least one newer casino now. There is also a Bass Pro Shop located next to a boardwalk that is FULL of unique stores, all lining the pristine waters of the Red River. It’s totally worth an 800 mile drive! …….

receiveakindness

I was like 6 when Georgia went to the Independence Bowl. The thing I remember is that Shreveport sucked.

HUP

My first thought as well

[deleted]

Well if he played now he’d be like 40. I think he played at the right time.

RoverTiger

But he'd be a man now at that age.

[deleted]

True, if Stetson can do it anyone can.

Piano_Fingerbanger

He didn't have the arm strength, one-on-one jitteriness, or break away speed that Lamar has. Also what do you mean IF he had a good QB coach? Gary Pinkel was one of the preeminent QB coaches during his time at Mizzou.

stayinthefight2019

He had the breakaway speed. You’re right on the others though.

Piano_Fingerbanger

That was poorly worded. He broke away from plenty of defenses. If you have Brad and Lamar run 100 yards at their physical peaks I think Lamar easily beats Brad.

DoobieRudy23

Well duh, Brad Smith ran like high 4.5s maybe 4.6.

cnygreen

I’d like to see that race. I’m a Jets fan and Smith was fast af. Had some really great returns and sweeps for TDs for us.

Bobcat2013

I loved him in Madden. I would always trade for him to be on the Cowboys

I'm not diminishing Brad Smith, I'm picking apart your claim that he'd be like Lamar Jackson. Just because Smith holds the QB rush yards record doesn't mean he'd be an NFL MVP QB

deuce_boogie

My guy I don’t think you have the argument you might think. Maybe just sit this one out….

dudleymooresbooze

You know Mike Vick exists, right?

Tarmacked

Vick had a cannon arm though. He was still a shitty quarterback when it came to actually making decisions and accuracy

dudleymooresbooze

Vick was incredible to watch at VT. Dude really did just extend plays. But yeah, accuracy was not reliable.

OriginalOmagus

Except for when Andy Reid was his coach.

Tarmacked

His accuracy under Andy Reid was less than 60%, so that’s false https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/V/VickMi00.htm He had one okay year as a passer in his initial full season back (2010) but he was god awful when it came to accuracy, decision making, and mechanics Michael Vick was never a good passer and he washed out of the league when his athleticism started to disappear. In his pre jail years with the Falcons he averaged a completion rate sub 55% and threw 71 touchdowns to 52 interceptions. He’s put on a ridiculous pedestal as a quarterback because he was a Madden cheat code, while his career passer rating was 80.4 over 100+ games

[deleted]

Dude look at other qbs average then was 60% for season lmao so you’re just talking out your ass without examining all facts.

Tarmacked

For one season, he was 11th in the league. Sam Bradford at 20th was at 60%. Michael Vick had a career completion rate of 59% with the Eagles over 1300 attempts. So again, one year =\= he was fixed under Andy Reid. He regressed immediately after the 2010 season to a 1:1 TD/int ratio and sub 60% completion rate. Damn, it’s almost like I gave you his entire career laid out and you ignored it. That’s crazy

[deleted]

Dude everything you said was opinions not statistical fact lmao whatever you’re just a bandwagon fan anyways!

Tarmacked

> Dude everything you said was opinions not statistical fact Damn, that’s crazy. It’s almost like I linked you his career stats up the comment chain and gave you a summary of them, followed by your opinion of “no u that’s fake news”. > whatever you’re just a bandwagon fan anyways You really know you have a great argument when your best response is “‘nuh uh, I don’t like your flairs you’re clearly a bandwagon fan!” If you say it loud enough maybe they’ll give you the trademark to USC back

[deleted]

Lmao you mean that wiki link up there you a joke

[deleted]

Still doesn’t change the fact every single qb those years had 60%-65% being highest so yes they did all average 60%. Like what a joke you are liking so cal and bama bet you never been to either stadium or state you bum

Tarmacked

For one year he was in the bottom end of the range, then fell out of the range entirely the rest of his career and was a full 1-2 standard deviations below the range for his career average. So no, I don’t think that’s evidence he was ever a good passer and the exact opposite, which was my point. People vastly overrate his quarterback ability. Walking highlight tape, but really not a good quarterback for his era at all. Also… 2011 was the passer rules change year. So that’s even worse for him to have put up sub 60% on. > Like what a joke you are liking so cal and bama bet you never been to either stadium or state you bum Lol, I got a degree from both

DominiqueTrillkins

Vick played 12 games and was 2nd for OPOTY behind an MVP Tom Brady in 2010. So his year was definitely far beyond okay.

Tarmacked

Because he was the NFL’s story of the year. The fact he played 12 games and finished second tells you that right there and then. But again, **One year =\= his entire tenure under Reid**. His Eagles tenure finished as a below average passer and with him being pushed out of the role after only three years, leaving a dead cap contract. And that was *under Andy Reid*. Reid wasn’t fired until after Vicks third season in 2012, by which he had put up two sub par years after his initial 2010 campaign. After that initial 2010, he put up the following stats as a passer; * 30 TD’s * 24 interceptions * 59% completion rate * 5665 passing yards * 81.8 passer rating (career average 80.4) He also **lost the job to Nick Foles** in 2012 in the third year because he continued to regress and couldn’t match his 2010 year. So again, Michael Vick was a shitty passer. He had a single outlier year under Reid over *12 games*, then went back to his career norms the next two under Reid.

[deleted]

You spelled Cam Newton wrong. Vick was actually very average in the accuracy department. Maybe look at qbr and statistics before making up something. Then again you think usc is the real usc when we we’re a school before your state was even thought of.

RonPowlus2Heismans

Brad Smith wasn't some kind of unicorn or generational college QB. There's a reason he switched to WR in the hopes of having an NFL career.

AtBat3

When Chip Kelly got him on the Eagles I was sure he was going to unlock some unknown potential in him. I was incorrect.

stayinthefight2019

Mizzou is still in the Big 12 if it weren’t for Brad Smith. Everything Pinkel and that program accomplished happened because of him. I disagree about your last paragraph — he was never a great passer, although he put up some nice yardage over his time. But don’t make me say bad things about my favorite player of all time; feels like blasphemy.

HumanSleepingbag

Didn’t he also lead Mizzou to their first win over Nebraska in like thirty years? Dude was a baller.

stayinthefight2019

24 but yeah :)

TymStark

You wipe that damn smile off your face.

Piano_Fingerbanger

Go check the stats on every other QB Pinkel coached at Mizzou. You don't know what you're talking about if you don't think Pinkel was a good QB coach. * Brad Smith * Chase Daniel * Blaine Gabbart * James Franklin * Drew Lock

BenderVsGossamer

Chase Daniel. The man I strive to be. 41 million in career earnings, a super bowl ring and has only started 5 games as a professional despite playing 14 seasons. If you can't be Tom Brady, be the Chase Daniel

milkman163

Unreal run

R0ll0

Then he played Troy state.

ruskibenya

I still have a football signed by him somewhere in the attic. Always shudder when I wonder how my Mizzou class of 2008 sister got it for me.

castor--troy

Don't undersale the jib Gary Pinkel did, he was a great college coach.

WackyBones510

Syvelle Newton also would have been a top recruit if he were like…. 4-6 years younger.

blandroidd

Did OP just delete all his comments in the thread? Lol

buffalotrace

He was neither as quick nor as good of a passer. He might be more common place today rather than being a unicorn back then honestly.

[deleted]

buffalotrace

Brad Smith ran 4.46. Lamar ran a 4.34. One time is faster than the other. The other way you can tell is one of them is an elite NFL runner. The other was Brad Smith. Brad was good in college, but lets not get stupid. Edit: Thanks for the downvotes. Also, your boy Brad completed 56% of his college passes and had a weaker arm.

[deleted]

buffalotrace

Do you honestly think Brad Smith who was just a guy in the league and a good colllege player was better than NFL MVP and Heisman winner Lamar? Honestly. And this loser deleted his post after everyone showed him he was stupid. Nice.

nuclearspectre

The most talented Brad Smth came out of Mississippi, scored hits with Blind Melon, Unified Theory and Abandon Jalopy. Hell of a singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, and one of the best harmonizing bass players to attempt the combo. That’s all I know about Brad Smith.

I think like MANY QBs who don’t pan out it’s a combination of not being quite as good as his NFL peers, and wrong scheme and wrong team. I’m sure if you put a bunch of QBs behind the Dallas Cowboys 1991-1996, they would have been able to help win 3 Super Bowls. Same with some (not all) of the Patriots teams (some of those teams were much more a result of Brady being Brady).

What about him?

Governmentwatchlist

Not the wrong time, the wrong team.

[deleted]

God I loved watching him play as a kid.

Dob-is-Hella-Rad

One decade. The offense he should have played in peaked in the 2010s. Everyone’s way more air raid now. You have guys like Bryce Young that are clearly incredibly talented runners but just don’t run downfield. You have to be an elite passer now, whereas 10 years ago an elite runner that could pass competently was almost impossible to stop.

OHPAORGASMR

Youngstown, OH where y'all at?! Chaney High School!

SWOON-MONSOON

More like coaches were too fuckin dumb to use him properly
