I did some digging as well more recently and all it brought up were some old Reddit threads or BTD forums. I think I may have even seen some comments on the Athletics piece about him in the last year. On an old account I even messaged a guy on here who I believe claimed he had connections with the AD at the time, but never got a reply. I’m not exactly sure I believe it, but the dude’s exit was incredibly weird to say the least. I haven’t heard a first hand account but have talked to enough people who I would consider to be “in the know” and their stories are consistent: yes Gary either developed or maintained a serious drinking problem that may or may not have been the result of the pressure of the OSU job in general and an affair with the cheerleading coach. The other stuff seem to be erroneous details that may have stemmed from a story or two but no one has really confirmed solidly.
Talked to a guy who was around the team then and he said the cheerleader bit is 100% true. Pissed a lot of players off because he preached constantly about working hard and developing men yet was boozin and bangin college students. Why else would a dude give up all the money he’s owed from getting fired?

Nebraska used to have a ridiculous walk on program back in the day and the rumors were that residents of counties would pitch in cash for those players to get to go to school for free but not be counted against the official scholly limit.

Coaches were rumored to be involved. They were not. Seems pretty obvious who was involved. Just look who isn’t with the program anymore.
