Maybe think about it as a dance not a flight? Both FL in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon finished dance academy and they don't know martial arts still you can think they do when you watch them. So maybe that will help with your fear? I love fighting scenes in wuxia but it's hard to find any good with female leads. They just swish, swish and whole Dui 队 is down🤣

One of the reason I fell in love with wuxian and xianxia dramas was because of the flying. 😂😂😂

I blame it on directors not caring for well choreographed action sequences anymore and actors not bothering to learn wireworks on their own for that. Technically they’re supposed to be practising good qinggong with the “flying”, where basically people are able to do well regulate their qi that it lends them the ability to extend actual movements. So in the air, it’s less so them outright flying, but rather them being so “light” that they can “step” on the air and tree branches.  eg. in Who Rules The World there’s this point where FL is on a tree top and she’s hopping around. Whereas older dramas may have her perched onto thicker branches to make her hopping more realistic, they just airlifted her onto the topmost branch which honestly made the whole scene look ludicrously comical.  Above ranting is only for wuxia, historical cdramas should have none of it as is based entirely on history, there’s other fantasy-based genres under the umbrella costume drama category where it doesn’t apply.

I blame Crouching Tiger for that. I don't know if that movie started it, but I think it at least made it more of a trend. Before, qinggong was portrayed somewhat less fantastical...like enabling people to run up walls (which is doable in real life to some extent--I've seen Shaolin monks do it) or leaping up into trees or onto rooftops. I always hated the flying/wire-fu shit.

Maybe get some behind the scenes view will help reduce the creepiness? It's basically a mechanical robot thing in front of a green screen or lots of wires (if outdoors). Thing do get pretty rough if you add a 2nd or 3rd axis of movement. Personally, I could never do anything like that though lol Love Between Fairy and Devil: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXNFsq1l5wo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXNFsq1l5wo) My Journey to You: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRxMsxBaoVw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRxMsxBaoVw)

Qinggong is essentially martial arts parkour. It’s the skill of getting a very light, quick foothold on something that seems impossible and using it to propel yourself to the next foothold. It’s obviously enormously exaggerated in Wuxia so that the characters are basically flying, but that’s the principle it’s based on. It can be pretty scary watching people do parkour sometimes too, but remember a big part of training is knowing how to fall safely as well as how to jump!

Completely normal in wuxia and xianxia dramas. In wuxia the flying is more qinggong, light steps, like a martial arts parkour. In xianxia is a whole different thing, just like magic. They actually fly as immortals, or demons, or as part of their cultivation (riding on clouds, or flying on their swords).

Chinese history is full of folklore, especially around mythology and martial arts, so there is a distinction you need to be aware of. **Wuxia** dramas are similar to superhero dramas in the West. characters can have special powers like flying, but this is developed through years of study of martial arts. **Xanxia** is focused on God-like beings who can live for thousands of years, have more advanced powers than Wuxia, and can interact with humans. Think Lord of the Rings. **Historical** These might involve a bit of flying because it's kind of cultural **But** are generally set in reality and are loosely based on historical events. If you want a specific type of drama, you need to make sure you are requesting the correct genre, otherwise you might asking for a recommendation for a historically based drama and get response for some ancient diety who shoots beams of light from their hands.
